Doubt is the worst. Absolutely the worst. (Well, maybe pride is
tied.) Having been raised in the scientific spirit and trained to
doubt, and having learned some good doubt karate kicks and punches to
fend my way through graduate school, I can verify that it is a hard
habit to kick. It always seems safer to draw back and not accept
something (doubt it) than to jump in on it.

I must say that it is taking years and very rosey rewards of progress
under the faith-filled tutelage of Sri Chinmoy to kick the doubt
habit (tougher than stopping smoking, which I did stop years ago).

I find that the best antidote to doubt is the company of spiritual
people, who will always try to have faith in something and move
forward through intuition, hope, with some delightful risk-taking at
times. A doubter will always remain with his doubt and never enjoy
the worlds that his doubt destroys.

Priyadarshan, thank you for this reminder.

Yours,

Nayak

This is a good reminder about the benefit of being Sri Chinmoy's
student. Thank you Prachar. I must say that even the worst moments
I have these days are better than MOST of the moments I had before
joining this path. There has never been a time when I have stood up
after meditation and have not been a better person than before. Sri
Chinmoy is the pioneer who goes into the rough jungle of our
character and blazes a trail for us to follow. He civilizes the
wild. I can't imagine doing this "life" thing without high-level
help. It is too precious, this life, to waste the time. Thanks,
again, Prachar, for the reminder. And, to add to the power of your
messages, you may wish to do something about your apostrophes,
because the errant computers are giving them to us as "’". See
below.

Yours,

Nayak

Enslaved by words,
You immediately fall.
Emancipated by deeds,
You triumphantly rise.

Here is another joke by Sri Chinmoy. This one is from "I am not the
author", part 3, p.34:

A mother said to her son, "Never put anything off until tomorrow.
You have to do today everything that is supposed to be done."

The son listened to her philosophy and said, "In that case, give me a
dollar today. Don't wait until tomorrow!"

Enjoy yourself! Be sure to balance work and play.

Subject: God as Melody
prachar@...
Send Email Send Email

Of all the elements that commend music to our sensibility, that which pulls
strongest on the soul is melody.

Rhythm appeals to our vitality, the pulse of life, the heartbeat coursing
through our veins.

The mode or scale impacts directly our emotional response.

Harmony satisfies our moral sense, the urge to bring order into our universe
of potential chaos.

Form appeases our mental need for understanding and control, circumscribing
the boundaries within which emotion can range.

Style is a means through which composer, performer and listener can colour
the musical experience, embracing it to the degree it conforms to the
aesthetic sense of the individual.

But all these exist only to support melody. Melody is the essence of music.
It is melody that sets the strings of the soul in resonance, the more so
the closer the melody conforms to the qualities of the soul –
simplicity, purity, sweetness and light. (Light here can be understood as
truth, authenticity, clarity).

The purest and simplest melodies rise like beacons above and beyond the
mists of time, nationality, the cultures and composers that discovered them.
They are like the great scientific theories, eternal spiritual truths that
are shared by all humanity forever.

They exist deep within us, and call us to that state. They are wordless
mantras, witnesses to the immortality of both music and the soul. Each of
us is, at last, a melody.

Throughout Sri Chinmoy’s Magnum Opus of 17,000 songs, melody reigns
supreme. Here the most sublime poetry itself defers to melody. While the
poetry dips its hat to demands of style and form, melody flies beyond,
eschewing the constraints of harmony and the seduction of rhythm.

Thus Sri Chinmoy’s songs sing directly to the soul, in the soul and
for the soul, appealing to the vital, mind and heart insomuch as these parts
of our being are also tuned to the soul’s divine resonance.

Returning and immersing us in our satisfaction-source, Sri Chinmoy’s
songs are the highest gift bestowed on mankind.

I think for a person of science,it is alright to start with
doubt; then when the proof has been obtained, the doubt will be
dispelled automatically.

THE GOLDEN SHORE IS WAITING

Although you are experiencing
   Repeated defeats and failures,
Do not give up!
   Always remember
The Golden Shore is waiting
   For nobody else but you.

Last during our group meditation I felt the lift that I have felt
many times before. Meditation is essential for me. Each day, I
enter the ignorance world and forget what a great boon it is to
meditate. Then meditation brings me back out.

I am eternally grateful to Sri Chinmoy for teaching me to meditate.

Yours,

Nayak

Thanks for submitting this inspirational poem, Ahuta. So often I feel
that words enslave us - keep us connected to the limited mind as
opposed to the illumnined mind or the heart or the soul. I believe Sri
Chinmoy's message in this poem is that it is only by our deeds that we
can truly be freed of our spiritual bondage. Talk is cheap; soulful,
dedicated action is difficult, yet extremely powerful. Sri Chinmoy is
great example of this in his own life. He may at times speak very
little, but his actions are so plentiful, so varied, so significant, so
meaningful. His activities in so many fields from art to music to
literature to athletics speak volumes and volumes of spiritual
philosophy by means of their uniqueness, their selflessness, their
inspirational effect, and their enlightening force. Even though Sri
Chinmoy has written hundreds of books himself, it would take hundreds
of thousands of books to begin to express the breadth and depth of his
divinely inspired activities. May we all follow Sri Chinmoy's example
and employ our deeds - not our words - as our means for spiritual
progress and lasting happiness!

OK, everyone, loosen up and laugh. Here is another joke from Sri
Chinmoy's book, "I am not the author". This one is from part 10, #66.

Yours,

Nayak

Joke:

A child did not want to go to school. Her parents asked her, "Why do
you not want to go?"

She said, "I do not want to go because my teacher is stupid. One day
she will say two plus two is four, and another day she will say three
plus one is four. She cannot make up her mind!"

We had a most wonderful programme yesterday at our Aspiration-Ground
in New York. Sri Chinmoy met with several very special and
celebrated individuals and honoured them. So many inspiring
experiences I had personally and lessons I learned in seeing Sri
Chinmoy encourage these luminaries.

Sri Chinmoy lifted each one of the guests and presented them with
the "Lifting Up the World With a Oneness-Heart Award". He honoured
each person in their own unique way. Each person was profoundly
moved and deeply touched. Sri Chinmoy can touch the hearts of so
many, many totally different people.

First was a very, very famous actor who has starred in many popular
movies. He meditates and was extremely eager to meet Sri Chinmoy. He
is in his early 50's and yet he was like a child! After he was
lifted, Sri Chinmoy sat directly across from him and meditated with
him for what felt was a long, long time.

If I only came to earth for those minutes and only saw that, this
life would still be the most fulfilling and most inspiring life I
have ever lived! As well, if Sri Chinmoy only offered that one
meditation to Mother Earth and nothing else, his contributions to
humanity would be unimaginably good and great!

I mean all this from the very depths of my heart. Watching and
entering into the meditation carried me to a world of such beauty,
purity, goodness, hope and love. Sri Chinmoy's face was filled with
such radiant goodness.

Afterwards, the actor said over and over and over that this time
with Sri Chinmoy and all of us was the happiest day of his life! He
is very, very eager to be with us again!

Soon after that, a renowned pianist and also a renowned composer
came and were lifted. Then Sri Chinmoy lifted an open-hearted
chiropractor who had been very kind to Sri Chinmoy and gave him one
treatment two days earlier.

An extremely innovative and pioneering conductor of a major Untied
State symphony orchestra came next. The conductor's parents were
also lifted. The way in which Sri Chinmoy touched these three was so
extraordinary. The smiles on all of their faces, the satisfaction in
their hearts was magnificent.

Then a very famous ballerina came to be lifted and honoured. She had
worked very, very hard to succeed...and against countless odds! Such
sweetness in her face and eyes.

Finally, one of the most renowned artists in the world came and was
lifted by Sri Chinmoy. He also meditates and has a spiritual
teacher, whom Sri Chinmoy had met and honoured. He was profoundly
moved. We also showed the video of when Sri Chinmoy honoured his
spiritual teacher! This is the open-hearted and all-embracing
oneness which Sri Chinmoy teaches us and which he puts into practice
most vividly. The artist spoke to that very point and signed our
guest book with a magnificent drawing!

What a wonderful programme! After a very short break, Sri Chinmoy
then had a wonderful meditation. He and our best singers practised
many songs he has written in honour of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother.

I offer my gratitude for these sacred moments.

     Yours sincerely,

       Agraha

Dear Upasito,

Thank you for your posting. I feel quite the opposite to what you
have said, and I feel your point is very, very important. I have
been trained quite rigorously in science for many, many years...in
an MD-PhD research programme.

Every single one of the greatest discoveries and contributions which
I made--and they are actually quite miniscule in the larger scheme,
but were quite large for me personally at the time--each
contribution has come from the intuitive heart.

I was fascinated to learn about how the greatest creative
discoveries in the sciences and arts have been made...they have all
been made through intuition, heartfelt and often desperate eagerness
to discover the truth. Archimedes was the greatest mathematician of
ancient times, and he discovered the Law of Buoyancy. He made his
discovery when he got into his bathtub. He was so thrilled, that he
ran out into the streets shouting "Eureka!" --I have found it!!!

Albert Einstein discovered his Laws of Relativity not by doubting or
even by thinking in the way we imagine it. He discovered these laws
through a kinesthetic motion of his hands through space!

I must say that my day-to-day maintenance activities are well-served
by my mind--but not the doubting mind. For me, the doubting mind
only hurts and divides.

Even in day to day life, we all know that most things are decided
within seconds of our meeting and speaking with people from people's
inner feelings. Then we use the mind to rationalise what we have
done.

Truth to tell, even with a rigorous study of the greatest scientific
creators, it is the intuitive heart that is the channel for their
greatest discoveries.

One other important point is that the discoverers and pioneers most
all report that they are in a wonderful flow that somehow unites
them with the entire world when these magnificent creative moments
come. Many say that they must work very, very hard and then simply
listen to the universe to get the answers. This, in my heart, is
clearly the Supreme who is offering new Wisdom-Light to humanity in
and through his choice instruments!

With best regards,

    Agraha

I wonder if it is not really opposits but just a manner of viewing
different parts of the same process.

aaaa Earlier in this thread, it was mentioned that "we are all
philosophers, for there is nobody on earth who has not doubted at
least once. So, in that respect, we are all philosophers---"
bbbb The examples of great thinkers you noted discovered something
important --- must have sensed the limitiations of the then current
explanations as insufficent to explain or embody something.
[ This could be like saying the world is maya [which I understood to
be implying unreality] doesn't mean the world is "unreal" but that a
maya view does not extend far enough to encompass all of reality.

cccc It seems doubt can be usefull if it leads to [or is the result
of] an awaraness of the insufficency of the current knowledge. The
danger is that one stops at that stage of the process and gets caught
in the doubt or despairs of ever being able to understand. In that
sense one would not be open to "seeing" and miss the "eureka
experience".

So the response to doubt would seem to be the key - does one who
first doubts, then choose to nurish the "eagerness to discover the
truth" as you experssed it...

On a second step of the creative - intutitive process: after these
wonderfull intutiive leaders have had their "eurika" they have often
gone about showing the rest of us sloooooooow learners many different
ways to see this same rality. Sometimes using the tools of their
trade [science, sport, art] to explain what is is that they saw in
their initial intuitive flash....So they come back to earth and show
us other proofs and that may be what "upasito" > <THELl0NHEART@" was
observing. The lone seer poet or intuitive thinker, brings back the
vision and demonstrates it enough different ways that the road sign
slowly becomes a highway of proofs until most say this expanded
vision is "intuitively" obvious.

In some ways that is what it appears that Sri Chinmoy is constantly
doing after his continuous inner experience which is so all
encompassing. His many differnt activities [art - music - sports -
dedicated service] are there to help us "extend" our ability to see
ways to go beyond our initial doubts and to discover the "proof..

If one must go against the status quo and suspend belief in a limited
and unfulfilling explantation to get closer to the truth, it seems
one must also then suspend "doubt" to be open to a more fulfilling
truth entering.

But thinking about all that might give someone a headache :-) --- so
thank God for the simplicity of the heart, grace and the poise of
meditation to keep it all in balance.

Lord, We need to Talk by Kalatit
In response to Nayak's encourgement to also share some lighter
moments, I came accross a short pamphlet put together by our brother -
Friend Kalatit for his 50th birthday in 2002. 50 short sayings in a
humorus vein. Here are four:

#3
Lord, before you punish me and my good name therby curse
Let me provide the names of others, Lord, who have done much worse

#10
You surround Yourself only, Lord, with the seekers of perfection
Let me aspire, Lord, to prove, each rule admits of exception

#15
I know that You will call me, Lord, so available I will stay
Here at home, Lord, doing nothing, day after day

#28
Sleeplessly I will serve Thee, Lord, and pass every test
But first, Lord, You must appreciate my necessity for rest.

Hope you enjoyed - Adhiratha

It was recently said by a renown Indian academic that Sri Chinmoy's "Commentary
on the Bhagavad Gita" is the best commentary available on the subject. In that
respect, I dedicate my next postings to that commentary.

The Bhagavad Gita is perhaps the most famous, and widely-read scripture of
ancient India. It was born in 600 B.C. The Bhagavad Gita, the Upanishads and the
Brahma Sutras form the three principal texts that define and capture the essence
of Hinduism. In the Gita the Supreme is the pure Self, unaffected by any action
or experience, detached, and unconcerned. He is the transcendental, the cosmic,
and the individual reality that not only supports but also governs the whole
cosmic action. He is responsible for the creation, preservation, and destruction
of the universe. The Gita is a comprehensive treatise on yoga which includes
various phases of the self's development and its final union with the Divine.

Sri Chinmoy states:

?The Gita is the epitome of the Vedas. It is spontaneous. It is in a form at
once divinised and humanized. It is also the purest milk drawn from the udders
of the most illumining Upanishads to feed and nourish the human soul. The Gita
demands man's acceptance of life and reveals the way to achieve the victory of
the higher Self over the lower self by the spiritual art of transformation:
physical, vital, mental, psychic and spiritual. The Gita embodies the
soul-wisdom, the heart-love, the mind-knowledge, the vital-dynamism and the
body-action. The Gita is unique. It is the Scripture of scriptures. Why?
Because it has taught the world that the emotion pure, the devotion genuine can
easily run abreast with the philosophy solid, the detachment dynamic.?

A STRONGER HEART
by Sri Chinmoy

Mine is the wisdom-light
That tells me to ask
not for a lighter burden,
but a stronger heart.

Today two or three hundred people stood in snow and bitter cold to
see Sri Chinmoy. The weather was so horrible in New York that the
great spiritual teacher could easily have stayed home. But, he came
out in the bad weather and meditated with his students, because
surely he knew that these visitors from around the world wanted to
see him.

As I walked past him, my mood soared as I caught his very beautiful
smile. I came away one happy guy. What really counts is the inner
weather and not the outer snow.

Yours,

Nayak

Thank you very much for your very heart-felt description of this very
significant meeting. For those of us who are currently on the other
side of the world and unable to be there it was very inspiring to be
able to read your words - perhaps almost as inspiring as being there!

Today's Unwilling Obedience

If you find it difficult
To offer God your unreserved
	 And unconditional obedience,
Try to offer Him
	 Your cheerful obedience.
If that too is impossible,
Then try at least to offer Him
	 Your unwilling, reluctant obedience.
Today's unwilling, reluctant obedience
Will eventually be transformed
	 Into tomorrow's unreserved
		 And unconditional obedience.

Sattva
Sattva is the chief of the qualities of nature. It embodies harmony .
Let us know the existence of harmony in relation to the universe. To
quote Dryden:
From harmony , from heavenly harmony
This universal Frame began:
  From harmony to harmony
Through all the compass of the notes it ran,
The diapason closing full in Man.
The possessor of the Sattvic quality has undoubtedly a heart of gold.
He knows that his life has a significance of its own. His breath is
pure. His patience is luminous. Unparalleled is his fortitude.
Infallible is his certainty.

Must sing and dance

nayak_ltp

A very unique form of meditation we do on our path from time to
time. As Sri Chinmoy drives a small electric three-wheeled scooter
or a mini-golf cart, we meditate. Tonight, as Sri Chinmoy drove
around the perimeter of a large auditorium, several hundred of his
students meditated. What is so beautiful about this meditation is
that it is very dynamic, yet it is meditation indeed. It enormously
helps my mind to have some motion to focus on, and yet that focus
draws in tremendous stillness and a feeling of inner peace. Plus, we
love seeing our teacher up close, and every two or three minutes he
cruises by, looking very high. Motion outside and stillness inside.

If you have never seen it, the only comparison I can think of is
meditating on a bird coasting on an updraft, or meditating on the
ocean with its surface wavy turmoil and its hidden, quiet vastness.
