Description

Red River Modelers is a group dedicated to the building of scale models. Although styrene plastic is and has been the primary material used, many other products are on the scene. The modeler has access to kits made of, or enhanced by resin, vinyl, brass (and other metals), wood, thermoplastics, and more. At any given time, one or more club members are working in or learning about “other” materials, teaching us all.

Painting models used to mean tiny jars of enamel paint put on with paint- brushes. Today, the modeler may use acrylics, oils, pastels, water color, wax pencils, lacquer, lithographic inks, and more! Supplies may come from stores dealing with models, trains, dollhouses, home repair, plastics, art supplies, architectural supplies, sewing supplies, electronics, drug stores, beauty supplies, makeup counters, woodworking and machine shops, the woods and the side of the road!

Today, brushes are augmented with airbrushes, foam applicators, cotton swabs, toothpicks, toothbrushes, spatulas, rags, and fingers. Tools ......, well, you name it, somebody’s got it!

The modelling hobby really took off after World War II, with the introduction of stryene, and thousands of veterans and their kids being interested in the tools of war; planes, tanks, and ships, as well as automobiles. But, even in the 1950’s there was a smattering of figure models, animals, full scale pistols, and historical scenes, and comedy. Today, the gamut is even wider.

We meet the second Saturday of each month at the Braodmoor Library in Shreveport Louisiana from 10:30 to 12:30. Bring your project to show or maybe you would like someone to assist you with your model. No matter what, we would like to see you there. Young people are welcome also.
