Bill Would Extend Daylight-Savings

WASHINGTON — Daylight-saving time would start three weeks earlier and run through Halloween under a change included in an energy bill approved Thursday by the House.

The energy legislation was expected to be passed by the Senate, probably Friday, and sent to President Bush (search).

The time change is supposed to save energy because people have more daylight in the evening and do not have to turn on lights.

The House had approved a two-month extension — one in the spring and the other in the fall. But that was scaled back after airline officials complained that the extension would cause problems with intentional flight schedules.

Farmers said the change would adversely affect livestock.

Some senators also questioned how much actual energy savings would be achieved.

"We ought to take a hard look at this before we jump into it," said Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho.

The bill calls for a study into energy savings from daylight-saving time.

Reps. Edward Markey (search), D-Mass., and Fred Upton, R-Mich., agreed to scale back their original proposal.

The revised plan would begin daylight-saving time three weeks earlier, on the second Sunday in March and extend it by one week to the first Sunday in November. The extension would begin in March 2007.

Upton noted that the extension means daylight-saving time will continue through Halloween, adding to safety.

"Kids across the nation will soon rejoice," he said, as they get another hour of daylight trick-or-treating.

"The beauty of daylight-saving time is that it just makes everyone feel sunnier," Markey said.

I.R.A. to Renounce Violence in Favor of Political Struggle

The Irish Republican Army has given up its armed struggle for a united Ireland, agreeing to turn solely to political methods, an American businessman said yesterday after being briefed on a statement expected from the guerrilla group later this week.

The agreement, if borne out, would be a historic turning point in the violent history of Ireland and Northern Ireland. But there is still widespread official skepticism about I.R.A. promises, particularly when it comes to the issue of disarmament.

Indeed, it was not immediately clear whether the I.R.A. would address how several tons of arms, hidden in bunkers across Ireland, would be disposed of, according to the businessman, Niall O'Dowd, who brokered talks between the I.R.A. and American officials that helped lead to a cease-fire in 1994. The continued existence of those weapons, which were to have been destroyed under an agreement reached after the cease-fire, contributed to the collapse of the Northern Ireland government in 2003.

Last night, an Irish government spokesman said an I.R.A. commitment to nonviolence had to be backed by an unambiguous process for disposing of all its weapons. "The ultimate test is the delivery on that," said the spokesman, who as a matter of routine practice spoke only on the condition that he not be identified. A spokesman for the British government declined comment.

A number of recent signs have pointed to major developments occurring within the I.R.A.

Prime Minister Bertie Ahern of Ireland was cutting short a vacation to return to Dublin later this week. John DeChastelain, a Canadian general who is the chairman of a commission set up to oversee the destruction of paramilitary weapons, is in Ireland this week, the Irish government spokesman said. And Martin McGuinness, one of the leaders of the I.R.A.'s political wing, Sinn Fein, is to go to Washington tomorrow to brief American officials on the peace process, according to Rita O'Hare, Sinn Fein's representative in the United States.

Yesterday, Ireland's justice minister, Michael McDowell, said the top leaders of Sinn Fein, including Gerry Adams and Mr. McGuinness, had stepped down from positions on the I.R.A.'s secretive governing council.

The developments follow a public appeal by Mr. Adams in April, in which he urged the republican movement to turn away from violent struggle and to devote all its energies to politics. Mr. Adams said he had justified the I.R.A.'s activities in the past because no alternative existed for people who did not wish to submit to British authority.

"That struggle can now be taken forward by other means," Mr. Adams said in a speech in Belfast. He asked, "Can you take courageous initiatives which will achieve your aims by purely political and democratic activity?"

Mr. O'Dowd, the publisher of a magazine, Irish America, and a newspaper, Irish Voice, said Mr. Adams and other senior republicans had persuaded the I.R.A. membership that it could succeed politically. Sinn Fein is now the second-largest party in Northern Ireland, and it has made significant gains among voters in the Republic of Ireland since 1994.

"This is a truly historic moment in Irish history," Mr. O'Dowd said. "It is the first time since the founding of the Irish state that the I.R.A. has agreed that there should be no armed struggle. Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness have taken an armed revolutionary movement and succeeded in placing it on a political path. Irish history is littered with people such as Michael Collins, who tried to do the same and failed."

However, the I.R.A.'s failure to disarm since 1994 has created much official skepticism about its motives and statements.

"There is no position whatsoever between being armed and being unarmed for the I.R.A.," said Mr. McDowell, the justice minister. "If the I.R.A. are decommissioning, they must decommission all their weapons in their entirety, every single pistol, every single bullet, the lot."

No one from any other country will want to visit America for fear of getting the disease. The media will be our unsuspecting ally. Russian Intelligence Reports also state the United States media organs have been ordered to ‘blackout’ the news of these Anthrax Attacks due to what their Military Leaders say is a “National Security Assure”.  The effect of these Western media ‘blackouts’ of information to their peoples is most effective, and as evidenced by the suppression from the citizens in Britain the correct news of the biological bombs that exploded in their transportation systems this past week.

Russian Scientists further report that these continued attacks against all modes of transportation in these Western Nations presently at war have served to indoctrinate into their peoples a mass fear of travel by any means.  Once these fears have been firmly established, say Russian Scientists, these peoples will happily give up their freedoms, including their freedoms to travel.

Most sadly this is now true in the United States, and as we can read as reported by the Washington Post News Service in their article titled "New York's Subway Riders Face Bag Checks With Somber Tolerance" and which says, "Few of the subway passengers objected to the idea that an officer might buttonhole them and ask to peer into their bags. The congenitally contentious New Yorker of legend was a muted presence. Police said few riders refused the searches, and some even voluntarily gave their bags over for scrutiny. "I'd rather be watched and alive than dead with my privacy intact," Frank Majowicz, a businessman from Toms River, N.J., said as he hauled a shoulder bag off the Times Square shuttle."

To the knowing of  these Westerners that these actions are not meant for their protection, but rather for their control they do not even see, even when it is directly pointed out to them, and as we can read as evidenced from another passage in that news report which says;

"Police officials took pains Friday to describe the searches as entirely random, hoping to allay fears of racial profiling. "We are looking at backpack size or containers large enough to house explosives that we know have been used in these mass transit attacks," said Paul J. Browne, chief spokesman for the city police. "The protocol would be to pick the fifth backpack in each group of 10. If a Middle Eastern man is number four, he would not get checked."

It is appalling to think of the tragic consequences that could have occurred in London yesterday should the London Police had adopted a similar like method of security used by the New York Police and the bomber who now lies dead in a London morgue would have been ‘number four’. 

But to the absurdities of these Western peoples lives turned into a comic farce they do not even see, or more importantly they do not even care.  But to the perils they currently face in this Global War there is no comics, nor farce, only death and destruction.  If only these Western peoples could see this.

BUENOS AIRES, July 22 (RIA Novosti, Yuri Nikolayev) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez warned the U.S. that his country would take "appropriate measures" if the White House interfered with the broadcast of the Latin American news channel TELESUR.

"The Venezuelan government will have to take appropriate measures if the U.S. interferes with the work of the TELESUR TV news channel by jamming its broadcast," Chavez said during a live broadcast on VTV, a Venezuelan TV channel.

"Our countries might get involved in an electronic war," the president added.

Chavez said Venezuela might copy Cuba in jamming the broadcast of U.S. radio stations and TV channels.

This new round of deterioration of relations between Venezuela and the U.S. began after the U.S. House of Representatives passed an amendment Wednesday allowing the U.S. government to counter the TELESUR broadcast with clear and objective information.

Earlier, TELESUR Director General and well-known Uruguayan journalist Aram Aronyan told RIA Novosti TELESUR was scheduled to start broadcasting on July 24 to become a "counterweight" to CNN and the BBC in Latin America.

TELESUR's signal is transmitted through a satellite and can be received in South, Central, and North America, Western Europe, and northern Africa.

Venezuela, Argentina, Uruguay, and Cuba jointly founded the new TV network.

TELESUR already has representation in Columbia, Bolivia, Brazil, and Venezuela and plans to open offices in Argentina, Cuba, Washington, and Mexico.

Dear Friends,

I have been trying to find an article that tells about a blackout yesterday in Chicago.

A co-worker was retelling her conversation with her sister who works downtown and having hysterics because of all the inconvenience. The buses and trains were shut down, traffic at a standstill. She had to walk 3 hours to get home, ( in high heels no less).

Funny there was no mention of it in any of the main news links that I have.
Anyone else hear about it?

I had heard about the one in Rome, but it only lasted half an hour. Still, I'm sure major chaos for awhile.  Also several others across the world.
I'll bet it isn't the last we see of these because of all the crazy weather.

Chinese General Threatens Use of A-Bombs if U.S. Intrudes

BEIJING, Friday, July 15 - China should use nuclear weapons against the United States if the American military intervenes in any conflict over Taiwan, a senior Chinese military official said Thursday.

"If the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition on to the target zone on China's territory, I think we will have to respond with nuclear weapons," the official, Maj. Gen. Zhu Chenghu, said at an official briefing.

General Zhu, considered a hawk, stressed that his comments reflected his personal views and not official policy. Beijing has long insisted that it will not initiate the use of nuclear weapons in any conflict.

But in extensive comments to a visiting delegation of correspondents based in Hong Kong, General Zhu said he believed that the Chinese government was under internal pressure to change its "no first use" policy and to make clear that it would employ the most powerful weapons at its disposal to defend its claim over Taiwan.

"War logic" dictates that a weaker power needs to use maximum efforts to defeat a stronger rival, he said, speaking in fluent English. "We have no capability to fight a conventional war against the United States," General Zhu said. "We can't win this kind of war."

Whether or not the comments signal a shift in Chinese policy, they come at a sensitive time in relations between China and the United States.

The Pentagon is preparing the release of a long-delayed report on the Chinese military that some experts say will warn that China could emerge as a strategic rival to the United States. National security concerns have also been a major issue in the $18.5 billion bid by Cnooc Ltd., a major Chinese oil and gas company, to purchase the Unocal Corporation, the American energy concern.

China has had atomic bombs since 1964 and currently has a small arsenal of land- and sea-based nuclear-tipped missiles that can reach the United States, according to most Western intelligence estimates. Some Pentagon officials have argued that China has been expanding the size and sophistication of its nuclear bombs and delivery systems, while others argue that Beijing has done little more than maintain a minimal but credible deterrent against a nuclear attack.

Beijing has said repeatedly that it would use military force to prevent Taiwan from becoming a formally independent country. President Bush has made clear that the United States would defend Taiwan.

Many military analysts have assumed that any battle over Taiwan would be localized, with both China and the United States taking care to ensure that it would not expand into a general war between the two powers.

But the comments by General Zhu suggest that at least some elements of the military are prepared to widen the conflict, perhaps to persuade the United States that it could no more successfully fight a limited war against China than it could against the former Soviet Union.

"If the Americans are determined to interfere, then we will be determined to respond," he said. "We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all the cities east of Xian. Of course the Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds of cities will be destroyed by the Chinese."

General Zhu's threat is not the first of its kind from a senior Chinese military official. In 1995, Xiong Guangkai, who is now the deputy chief of the general staff of the People's Liberation Army, told Chas W. Freeman, a former Pentagon official, that China would consider using nuclear weapons in a Taiwan conflict. Mr. Freeman quoted Mr. Xiong as saying that Americans should worry more about Los Angeles than Taipei.

Foreign Ministry officials did not immediately respond to requests for comment about General Zhu's remarks.

General Zhu said he had recently expressed his views to former American officials, including Mr. Freeman and Adm. Dennis C. Blair, the former commander in chief of the United States Pacific Command.

Russia and China Activate Ten Combat Divisions to Counter United States as Caspian Oil War Appears Set to Begin

Russian Intelligence Analysts are reporting today that both President Putin (Russia) and President Hu (China) have ordered the immediate activation of 10 Combat Ready Divisions to counter the increasingly aggressive moves being made by the United States in the Caspian Oil Regions of Central Asia.  Special Forces Army Units of both Russian Spetsnaz and Chinese Immediate Action Units were also ordered to be immediately deployed to both Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan to surround the large American Military bases in those regions, and that the governments of both of these countries have ordered the Americans to leave.

The government of Uzbekistan had called first for these actions, and as we can read as reported by the Indian National Newspaper Hindu News Service in their article titled "Uzbekistan steps up pressure on U.S. to close base" and which says, "Uzbekistan is stepping up pressure on the United States to withdraw its air base set up in the Central Asian country for operations in neighbouring Afghanistan. Uzbekistan also said that the United States had not paid takeoff and landing fees, as well as compensation for security services, new infrastructure, ecological damage and inconvenience to the local population.

The statement was issued two days after the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation called for the United States and its coalition allies in Afghanistan to set a date for withdrawing their military bases from Central Asia. Last month Uzbekistan introduced severe restrictions on American flights from the Khanabad base forcing the U.S. command to redeploy some aircraft to Afghanistan. Kyrgyzstan has joined Uzbekistan in calling on Washington to shut down its air base near the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek."

The government of Kyrgyzstan has also called for the Americans to leave their country, and as we can read as reported by the RIA Novosti News Service in their article titled "Kyrgyz ambassador: U.S. base must go, Russia's should stay" and which says, "The United States' military base near the Manas Airport, in the Central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan, must go and Russia's, at Kant, should stay, the Kyrgyz Ambassador to Russia said Monday at a press conference here. Apas Jumagulov recalled the recent Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit explaining the need for the Manas base's withdrawal by the fact that the situation in the neighboring Afghanistan was returning to normal."

The actions of the United States Military Leaders though to these demands to leave have been met instead with their increasing their combat capabilities in both Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, and in total disregard to both Russian and Chinese warnings issued to them, and of which can read as reported by the USA Today News Service in their article titled "China, Russia-led alliance wants date for U.S pullout" and which says;

"A regional alliance led by China and Russia called Tuesday for the U.S. and its coalition allies in Afghanistan to set a date for withdrawing from several states in Central Asia, reflecting growing unease at America's military presence in the region. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization, which groups Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, urged a deadline be set for withdrawal of the foreign forces from its member states in light of what it said was a decline in active fighting in Afghanistan. The alliance's move appeared to be an attempt to push the United States out of a region that Moscow regards as historically part of its sphere of influence and in which China seeks a dominant role because of its extensive energy resources."

Angering President Putin also has been the United States pressuring the European Union to attempt to take away Russia’s vast oil resources, and as we can read as reported by the Moscow Times News Service in their article titled "Putin’s Aide Warns of Finno-Ugric Conspiracy to Seize Russia’s Oil Assets" and which says, "The deputy head of Russia’s presidential administration, Vladislav Surkov, has said that foreigners are accusing Russia of oppressing provinces that are home to Finno-Ugric nations and “strategic resources” of oil..Speaking at a meeting with Russian businessmen, Vladislav Surkov said, “Today, Finland, Estonia and the European Union have become markedly more intense on the topic of Finno-Ugric nations. It turns out that we oppress them somehow. They allegedly have no rights in our country. Regions where those nations are dominant have strategic resources of our oil. I am not a follower of a conspiracy theory. But this is evidently a planned action.”

Moscow Officials further report that upon hearing of these latest moves by the United States against Russia President Putin remarked, “Then let’s see how well they are prepared when the UN orders them (the Americans) to return California to Mexico.”

To the Western peoples it still appears that they believe this American War upon the World is based on ‘terrorism’, but to the rest of the World it has long been known what the Military Leaders of the United States were planning, and even to as far back as 1998 were the warnings of these wars being reported, and as exampled by one such warning issued by the World Socialist Web Site News Service in their article titled "New Caspian oil interests fuel US war drive against Iraq" and which had said;

"Powerful geo-political interests are fueling the American war drive. In many respects US policy in the Persian Gulf is driven today by the same considerations that led it to invade Iraq nearly eight years ago. As a "senior American official"--most likely Secretary of State James Baker--told the New York Times within days of the Iraqi occupation of Kuwait in August of 1990: "We are talking about oil. Got it? Oil, vital American interests."

This struggle recalls the protracted conflict between Britain and Russia at the end of the nineteenth century for hegemony in the Middle East and Central Asia that became known as the Great Game. Germany made its own thrust into the region with its decision to build the Berlin to Baghdad railroad. The resulting tensions played a major role in the growth of European militarism that erupted in World War I. This time American imperialism is the major protagonist. Over the past several years, the battle for dominance in the region has come to center on one question: where to build a pipeline to move oil from the Azeri capital of Baku to the West.

"The Caspian region has emerged as the world's newest stage for big power politics. It not only offers oil companies the prospect of great wealth, but provides a stage for high-stakes competition among world powers.... Much depends on the outcome, because these pipelines will not simply carry oil but will also define new corridors of trade and power. The nation or alliance that controls pipeline routes could hold sway over the Caspian region for decades to come."

What is perhaps most insane about these Western peoples reactions to these true things is their not caring to know that both Russia and China are not going to lose Central Asia, or the Middle East, by anything other than Military defeat.  The suddenness of this Wars escalation will surprise these Westerners, even as their Military Forces had been the ones who started it, and as we can read as reported by the Washington Post News Service in their article titled "The Undeclared Oil War" and which says;

"Asia's undeclared oil war is but the latest reminder that in a global economy dependent largely on a single fuel -- oil -- "energy security" means far more than hardening refineries and pipelines against terrorist attack. At its most basic level, energy security is the ability to keep the global machine humming -- that is, to produce enough fuels and electricity at affordable prices that every nation can keep its economy running, its people fed and its borders defended. A failure of energy security means that the momentum of industrialization and modernity grinds to a halt. And by that measure, we are failing.

In the United States and Europe, new demand for electricity is outpacing the new supply of power and natural gas and raising the specter of more rolling blackouts. In the "emerging" economies, such as Brazil, India and especially China, energy demand is rising so fast it may double by 2020. And this only hints at the energy crisis facing the developing world, where nearly 2 billion people -- a third of the world's population -- have almost no access to electricity or liquid fuels and are thus condemned to a medieval existence that breeds despair, resentment and, ultimately, conflict.

In other words, we are on the cusp of a new kind of war -- between those who have enough energy and those who do not but are increasingly willing to go out and get it. While nations have always competed for oil, it seems more and more likely that the race for a piece of the last big reserves of oil and natural gas will be the dominant geopolitical theme of the 21st century."

To this ‘New Kind Of War” the Washington Post speaks of we can already see by the actions of these Western Nations how it is to be waged, by the deliberate terrorizing of their own citizens through continued mass attacks designed to keep them in constant fear against enemies that do not exist for the purpose of creating a War Society built upon the model established by the Nazi Germany Regime of the 1930’s, and which led to the last Global War.

For their continued refusal to see the whole truths of the very World they live in, and instead believing only in the repeated lies of propaganda told to them, these Western peoples have now been labeled as the most insane in the world, and as we can read as reported by the Australian News Service in their article titled "People in West suffer more from mental illness" and which says, "People in the West suffer more from mental illness than those in poorer countries, with chances of recovery being higher in places like India than in say New York or London, says an Australian study. Their findings are expected to rewrite international textbooks on the devastating mental illness characterized by symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized communication, poor planning and reduced motivation, it reported."

To the shocking devastation of Total Global War these Westerners know only through their movies, soon they will know it by looking out their doorways.

Such is the conclusion not of some overzealous sky pilot, but a mathematics expert who sought to disprove the existence of any hidden messages concealed in Scripture.


Now, the book that uses science to help prove the Bible's divine authorship is back, in a new edition packed with even more material than the original version.

"Bible Code Bombshell: Compelling Scientific Evidence that God Authored the Bible," is written by Edwin Sherman, an internationally recognized mathematician and statistical expert who was a skeptic of Bible codes, and, in fact, set out to nullify theories connecting them to ancient verses.

But after studying the subject himself, Sherman, founder of the Isaac Newton Bible Code Research Society, is now convinced the Hebrew Bible contains coded messages that are evidence of God's authorship of the Bible.

As WorldNetDaily previously reported, reporter Michael Drosnin wrote 1997's "The Bible Code," a book based on the work of Israeli mathematician Eli Rips that attained popularity, in part, from Drosnin's claim that future events, such as the Holocaust, Yitzak Rabin's assassination and the Gulf War were encoded in the Bible.

Such claims invited attacks from skeptics like mathematician and physicist Dave Thomas, who wrote in 1997, "Hidden messages can be found anywhere provided you're willing to invest time and effort to harvest the vast field of probability. He, Drosnin, underestimates the power of chance combined with the brute force of computers. He says these messages are beyond the power of chance, and I've proven they are not."

Another skeptic who was convinced he could prove Drosnin's messages to be fakes or statistical artifacts was Sherman.

Sherman says he found most of Drosnin's examples trivial.

"They were the simple kinds of words and phrases you might find if you searched for encoded messages in the Jerusalem phone book," he told the Southern Oregon News.

But he was intrigued enough to use code software and begin analyzing the Masoretic text of the Old Testament.

"I was very skeptical about the whole thing," he says. "I started a project to try and show the whole thing was bogus."

Instead, he says he found many examples of messages that went beyond simple words and phrases – and they often were contextually similar to the Biblical passage in which they were found.

"Finding dozens of lengthy encoded messages on the same topic in one short section of text is about as likely as winning a one-in-a-million jackpot ten times in a row," he said. "Basically, it cannot happen by chance."

The process of searching for encoded messages involves analysis of the biblical Hebrew text in digital form. The Scriptures are encoded by removing all spaces between words and creating long strings of letters. According to Sherman, vowels are inserted in the strings of letters – the Hebrew alphabet lacks vowels – following standard rules based on the sequence of consonants. Software then analyzes the strings in search of patterns based on equidistant letter sequences.

"The shorter an expression, the easier it is to find," Sherman noted, "but when we find longer statements that have a connection to the actual biblical passage, and we find those longer statements with frequency, it leads us to believe that those statements were purposely implanted in the Bible by God."

Some of the most compelling evidence of a mathematical pattern in the Hebrew text comes from the 53rd chapter of Isaiah, a passage most Bible scholars see as messianic and which Christians have traditionally seen as prophecy about Jesus.

Sherman developed a baseline using non-encoded Hebrew texts as his standard of comparison for determining whether the number of messages he found in a Biblical passage were statistically significant. Isaiah 53 proved to be a rich cluster of hidden messages, containing 42 encoded statements relating to Jesus' death, resurrection and ascension, far more than his baseline predicted.

As evidence, Sherman points to statements such as "Gushing from above, my mighty name arose upon Jesus, and the clouds rejoiced," "Dreadful day for Mary," "In his name as he commanded, Jesus is the way," "Resurrection of Jesus, he is risen indeed," and others that echo Isaiah's prophecy.

It is the coherence between the hidden messages and the Hebrew text from which they are drawn that excites Sherman, who has no interest in predicting the future or looking for new "truths." The messages plucked from the text are more like divine fingerprints.

U.S. prices would rise if China floats its currency

China's policy of pegging its currency, the yuan, to the U.S. dollar has American politicians and corporations up in arms.

But ordinary Americans don't seem too concerned. Maybe that's because the Far East nation is subsidizing the spending addictions of the U.S. consumer.

The primary effect of the peg, which fixes the exchange rate at 8.28 yuan to the dollar, is twofold: Inexpensive Chinese imports allow Americans to keep shopping. And because they keep goods plentiful and cheap, they help control inflation.

If China decides to unpeg the yuan from the U.S. dollar and let it float on an open market, the effects could be considerable. As consumers, Americans could feel the pinch of higher retail prices and interest rates. As wage-earners, we might see a partial rebound in the decimated manufacturing sector.

The Chinese government has kept quiet about its plans for the yuan, leaving economists and policy wonks to interpret the tea leaves of the global economy.

Here's a primer on what to expect if China makes a move:

A currency revaluation will raise the price of Chinese goods; that will hurt most in categories where China dominates production, such as toys, sporting equipment, shoes and certain consumer electronics.

"If you shop at Wal-Mart, this matters a whole lot," said Mark Zandi, chief economist at Economy.com. "Wal-Mart and other retailers import hundreds of billions of dollars worth of goods from China. If they revalue, those goods are going to cost all of us more to purchase."

For instance, China has become a veritable Santa's workshop, accounting for more than 90 percent of global toy production. If the currency were to move up by 20 percent, as some economists expect it would, and retailers absorbed half of that, shoppers might pay $22 for a teddy bear that previously cost $20.

"With a really aggressive scenario, you would be talking about maybe a 10 percent price increase in that category," said Georgetown University economist Pietra Rivoli, author of The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy.

Even so, Rivoli warns against widespread panic.

"China represents 13 to 15 percent of U.S. imports. Even though it doesn't seem that way at the mall, the great majority of our imports don't come from China," Rivoli said.

Interest rates

Americans' thirst for Asian imports keeps plenty of money flowing into China. China then reinvests a significant portion of that revenue into U.S. Treasury notes.

That serves several purposes: It gives Chinese banks a low-risk investment, it helps prop up the dollar, and it keeps U.S. interest rates low so that Americans can keep borrowing and spending.

As of April, China held $230.4 billion in U.S. treasuries, a 41 percent increase from a year earlier, making China second only to Japan as a holder of U.S. government debt.

If China revalues the yuan, its banks will have less cash and less incentive to buy U.S. debt. Once that happens, demand for treasuries will fall, which lowers their prices and simultaneously pushes up long-term interest rates.

That effect could be compounded if other Asian nations follow China's lead, provoking a rate increase of 0.4 to 2 percentage points on 10-year Treasury notes, said Morris Goldstein, senior fellow at the Institute for International Economics, a Washington think tank.

Mortgage and other long-term interest rates, which follow treasuries, would probably go up by an equal amount.

"Clearly Asian purchases of dollars are keeping U.S. interest rates lower than they would be otherwise," Goldstein said. In addition, a revalued yuan will likely push up inflation. Eventually, that might spur the Federal Reserve to control inflation by raising short-term interest rates, which also could help push up long-term rates.

Higher interest rates are great for a nation of savers, but Americans are notoriously bad savers. So rate increases will hurt consumers in such areas as mortgages, college loans and credit-card debt.

Goldstein sees a bright lining to this, however. He says Americans currently carry unsustainable loads of debt. Higher interest rates might encourage consumers to curb their spending before our economy cracks under the weight of such irrepressible borrowing.

Jobs and manufacturing

U.S. politicians have seized on the undervalued yuan as a culprit in the hemorrhaging of American manufacturing jobs. They say the currency peg makes Chinese products cheaper, giving Chinese manufacturers an unfair advantage in the global marketplace.

"This is about preventing the exodus of jobs," Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., said recently.

Economists take a more measured stance.

"Job creation has more to do with the overall health of the economy, and not a lot to do with the trade deficit," said David Wyss, chief economist at Standard & Poor's.

In addition, lost jobs may simply migrate elsewhere rather than return to the United States.

"The main competition for [Chinese goods] is other low-cost producers. If [businesses] don't buy from China, they'll buy from Egypt or the Philippines or Thailand," Goldstein said.

GLENEAGLES, Scotland -- British Prime Minister Tony Blair passes the G-8 torch to Russian President Vladimir Putin next year, paradoxically cementing Russia's place among the world's economic powers while throwing a spotlight on all the reasons its place at the table has always been tenuous.

The Group of Seven richest industrial countries reached out to Russia in 1991, inviting then-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in a bid to encourage Moscow to keep its huge post-Soviet nuclear arsenal safe. In 1992, President Boris Yeltsin was invited to take part in summit meetings as a gesture of support for his country's fledgling democracy.

Ten years later, Russia was brought into the exclusive club _ excepting participation in some economic discussions _ confirming Moscow's insistence that in spite of the disintegration of the Soviet Union, its economic slide and military decline, its influence in the world was undiminished.

Yet Russia's status has always been different from that of the other members _ the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and Italy _ which teamed up three decades ago to shape joint strategies on the challenges of the day.

Only recently, it was a net recipient, rather than donor, of international aid; about one-fifth of the population lives under the officially recognized poverty line. Its economy is currently ranked 16th in the world, and it continues to suffer from substantial state economic intervention.

Then there is the persistent Western criticism of Russia's record on democracy under Putin.

Giving Moscow the G-8 presidency "is a profound gesture of hypocrisy because the G-8 is made up of countries which are major industrial countries and political democracies," U.S. Rep. Tom Lantos, a Californian Democrat who has co-sponsored legislation calling for Russia's suspension from the club, said in a telephone interview from Washington. "The notion that Russia should be a member of this organization is absurd."

Under Putin, Russia has seen media freedoms squeezed, voters' rights to elect regional leaders eliminated, and opposition parties shrunken in the face of the overwhelmingly dominant pro-Kremlin party. Weak observation of the rule of law and conflicting signals _ with appeals to business executives to sink their money into Russia even as the state carved up the Yukos oil company, the country's erstwhile No. 1 producer _ have kept many investors wary.

During its presidency, "to some extent ... they will be on probation," said Chris Weafer, chief strategist at Alfa Bank in Moscow.

Part of Russia's cachet is its access to problem nations such as North Korea, Iran and Syria, where other G-8 members have limited sway, analysts say, and his partners hold out hope that Putin could parlay that into a mediating role. Putin played up that role in 2000 by arriving at his first G-8 meeting, in Okinawa, Japan, fresh from a visit to Pyongyang.

Moscow's strongest trump card, however, is its role as a stable energy supplier. Ironically, that strength could bring Putin new problems as his G-8 partners intensify demands for Russia to make good on its pledges to deliver more energy.

"Japan is vying with China for the main eastern trunk pipe, the U.S. wants the Murmansk pipeline built, and the EU countries want increased gas supplies," Weafer said. "All the countries want greater access for their energy companies to help develop the extra oil and gas to fill these export pipes."

Russian officials have said Moscow's G-8 presidency will concentrate on strengthening the security of energy supplies and pushing clean energy technologies to reduce greenhouse emissions.

Floods caused by torrential rain have left nine people dead and six missing in the city of Dazhou in southwest China's Sichuan province.

The streets in the city have been submerged, with the water level up to the third floor of some buildings.

All roads leading to the city have been cut off following torrential downpours which have dumped 461 millimetres of rain on the city in three days.

The latest deaths bring the toll from this year's floods to around 800 people killed or missing, with the main July-August flood season just starting.

Counterterrorism expert Juval Aviv spoke with FOX Fan Central about
what Americans can do to protect themselves in case of a terror
attack.

Do you believe another terrorist attack is likely on American soil?

I predict, based primarily on information that is floating in Europe
and the Middle East, that an event is imminent and around the corner
here in the United States. It could happen as soon as tomorrow, or it
could happen in the next few months. Ninety days at the most.

What advice do you have for individuals that have the misfortune of
finding themselves in the middle of a terror attack?

Since mass transportation is the next attack, when you travel to work
have with you, a bottle of water, a small towel, and a flashlight.
What happened in London is exactly a point to look at. Those people
who were close to the bombs died, then others were injured or died
from inhaling the toxic fumes or getting trampled. The reason you
take a bottle of water and a towel is that if you wet the towel and
put it over your face, you can protect yourself against the fumes and
get yourself out of there.

Don't be bashful. If your gut feeling tells you when you walk on
to a bus there is something unusual or suspicious, get out and walk away.
You may do it 10 times for no reason, but there will be one time that
saves your life. Let your sixth sense direct you.

Try to break your routine. If you travel during rush hour everyday,
try to get up a little earlier and drive to work or take the train
when it's still not full. Don't find yourself every day in
the midst of rush hour. Terrorists are not going to waste a bomb on a
half empty train.

What portion of the American infrastructure do you believe is at the
greatest risk for a terror attack?

We have put all of our emphasis, right or wrong, on the aviation
area. What has happened, in the last two to three years, based on
information we have, the terrorists have realized that they cannot
hijack a plane in America soon because the passengers are going to
fight back. So they realize what they have been very successful with
over the last 50 years in Madrid, London, Iraq, Israel: demoralizing
the public when they go to work and when they come back from work.

What they're going to do is hit six, seven, or eight cities
simultaneously to show sophistication and really hit the public. This
time, which is the message of the day, it will not only be big
cities. They're going to try to hit rural America. They want to
send a message to rural America: `You're not protected. If you
figured out that if you just move out of New York and move to Montana
or to Pittsburgh, you're not immune. We're going get you wherever
we can and it's easier there than in New York.'

What more do you think the government can do to protect the public?

Number one, and this is the beef I've had with Homeland
Security for the last four years, is educating the public on how to
deal with those types of events. There's no education. We're raising
the color code alert and that means nothing to anyone. Whether it's
green, yellow, pink, no one ever educated the public how to identify
suspicious items or people. In Israel, so many of them [terrorists]
have been apprehended just because people have phoned in. We
don't have that training on campuses, schools, or kindergarten.

In Israel, it's very popular right now [amongst terrorists] to
put one device to explode and time another one for five minutes later
when it's all calm, people are getting up, and the rescue teams
have responded. You need to know all those things and think about
those things. The government must pursue that. Law enforcement will
never have enough people on the street to detect things. We don't have
that kind of manpower. That's why the government must enlist the public.

Explosions shut down subway, buses, paralyzing capital; 2 deaths confirmed

LONDON - Near simultaneous explosions rocked the London subway and tore open a double-decker bus during the morning rush hour Thursday, causing at least two deaths and dozens of injuries in what Prime Minister Tony Blair said was a "barbaric" terrorist attack timed to disrupt the Group of Eight summit.

The explosions came a day after London was awarded the 2012 Olympics and as the G-8 summit was getting under way in Scotland.

"We are concerned that this is a coordinated attack. We are aware that one of the sites does contain indications of explosives," London police chief Sir Ian Blair said on Sky News.

He said authorities had not received any warning. "We have been at a very high state of alert. Of course if there had been any kind of specific warnings we would have dealt with it," he said.

"There have been a number of dreadful incidents across London today," said Home Secretary Charles Clarke, Britain's top law enforcement officer. He said there were "terrible injuries."

Police confirmed two deaths and said there were at least six explosions.

Blair said he was leaving the G-8 summit in Scotland for the day to return to London, while the other leaders continued the meeting.

One witness, Darren Hall, said some passengers emerging from an evacuated subway station had soot and blood on their faces. He told BBC TV that he was evacuated along with others near the major King's Cross station and only afterward heard a blast.

Buses destroyed
Sky News showed a picture of a mangled red bus; police said they suspected a bomb caused the explosion.

Police confirmed an explosion destroyed a double-decker bus at Russell Square in central London, and Dow Jones Newswires reported police reporting explosions on at least two others buses.

A witness at the Russell Square blast said the entire top deck of that bus was destroyed.

"I was on the bus in front and heard an incredible bang, I turned round and half the double decker bus was in the air," Belinda Seabrook told Press Association, the British news agency.

She said the bus was packed with people.

"It was a massive explosion and there were papers and half a bus flying through the air," she said.

'Walking wounded'
Police said incidents were reported at the Aldgate station near the Liverpool Street railway terminal, Edgware Road and King's Cross in north London, Old Street in the financial district and Russell Square in central London, near the British Museum.

London Ambulance Service said several vehicles had been dispatched to the area near Liverpool Street station.

"We believe there was some sort of explosion. There are some walking wounded at Aldgate," said a spokesman for City of London police, speaking on condition of anonymity. "We are not sure of the scale of the incident. Reports are still coming in."

Bradley Anderson, a subway passenger, told Sky News that "there was some kind of explosion or something" as his train reached the Edgware Road station in northeast London. "Everything went black and we collided into some kind of oncoming train," Anderson said.

Simon Corvett, who was on an eastbound train from Edgware Road station, said: "All of sudden there was this massive huge bang."

"It was absolutely deafening and all the windows shattered," he said. "There were just loads of people screaming and the carriages filled with smoke.

"You could see the carriage opposite was completely gutted," he said. "There were some people in real trouble."

Terror warnings received before blasts

JERUSALEM -- British police told the Israeli Embassy in London minutes before today's explosions that they had received warnings of possible terror attacks in the city.

Israel was holding an economic conference near the scene of one of the explosions.

Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was supposed to attend, but the attacks occurred before he arrived.

A senior Israeli official says just before the blasts, Scotland Yard called the security officer at the Israeli Embassy and said warnings of possible attacks had been received.

He didn't say whether British police made any link to the economic conference.

Wildlife officials do not know what is killing birds along the coast
from Virginia to South Carolina.


Virginia Beach, VA -- Wildlife officials are trying to determine what
is killing hundreds of sea birds that have washed ashore in Virginia
Beach and other locations along the Atlantic coast in the past
several weeks.

Similar reports have come from the Outer Banks of North Carolina; as
well as Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head in South Carolina.

Most of the birds are greater shearwaters, which are now migrating
north from their breeding grounds in the South Atlantic.

Since June 12, more than 500 dead sea birds have been reported from
Maryland to Florida, said Emi Saito, a wildlife disease specialist
with the U.S. Geological Survey's National Wildlife Health Center in
Madison, Wis.

"It's unusual to see so many," Saito said.

Wildlife pathologists are examining the birds for exposure to toxins,
pollutants and infections, she said.

Staffers at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Virginia Beach
recently found about a dozen dead greater shearwaters on the beach,
said Dorie Stolley, a federal wildlife biologist at the refuge.

Almost 200 birds have washed up in South Carolina, said Diane Duncan,
an ecologist with the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Charleston,
SC "In 20 years here, I have never seen this kind of mortality
event," Duncan said. "It certainly is a concern to us, and we'd like
to know the cause."

Tests on two of the birds ruled out toxins found in red tide, a type
of algal bloom that biologists initially suspected as a culprit,
Duncan said.

Will Post, an ornithologist and curator at The Charleston Museum,
said he dissected six greater shearwaters that had washed up alive,
unable to fly, and later died.

The birds' stomachs were empty, but they had varying levels of fat
reserves, suggesting they did not die of starvation, he said.

The greater shearwaters are common birds that resemble gulls in
appearance and size, with brown to gray heads and white undersides,
webbed feet and dark, tube-like bills.

They typically stay far offshore, where they feed on small fish and
squid.

Shearwaters fly nearly 5,000 miles during their annual migrations to
and from nesting grounds on Tristan da Cunha, a chain of volcanic
islands in the South Atlantic, Post said.

The cold-water birds breed in April and May and then fly to their
summer grounds off New England and points north, he said.

Creation Museum Being Built in Kentucky

BOONE COUNTY, Ky. — A new museum being built in Kentucky will have some of the classic staples of natural history museums — dinosaurs, fossils and a mineral collection. But it will also have something most museums don't: a viewpoint based solely on the Bible.

"We wanted to present an alternative, a scientific alternative to the natural history museums, which present evolution as fact," explained Mark Looy, spokesman for Answers in Genesis (search), the Australia-based group building the Creation Museum (search).

Challenging a widely held belief of modern scientists, the museum founders aim to counter the notion that man evolved from apes.

"We believe that dinosaurs were created alongside of man on day six of creation," said Looy. "They did not die out 65 million years ago."

Critics such as the Rev. Mendle Adams, pastor of St. Peter's United Church of Christ (search) in nearby Cincinnati, say museum leaders are twisting Bible verses to support an agenda.

"It's silly. It's a silly, silly argument," said Adams. "They use what I consider to be a flawed analysis of Scripture."

But the Creation Museum is getting a great deal of support. Millions of dollars in donations have come in from around the world.

The money's been used to build a theater, a planetarium and a nature trail on 50 acres of land, all focused on teaching the Bible in some way.

Half a million visitors a year are expected. That worries many scientists, who say the museum will attempt to undo a person's scientific education.

"They're pretty much saying that scientists around the world have colluded to pretty much lie to people," said Dr. William Anyonge, a paleontologist and assistant professor of biology at Xavier University (search) in Cincinnati. "I think that is really a slander to science."

Looy counters that the museum's message is well supported.

"Yes, the content will be very different from what you'll hear presented from mainstream scientists," he said, "but it's still good science nonetheless."

The museum plans to open in the spring of 2007.

Footprints of 'first Americans'

Human settlers made it to the Americas 30,000 years earlier than previously thought, according to new evidence.

British scientists came to this controversial conclusion by dating human footprints preserved by volcanic ash in an abandoned quarry in Mexico.

They say the first Americans may have arrived by sea, rather than by foot.

The currently accepted theory is that the continent's early inhabitants arrived 12,500 years ago, by crossing a land bridge between Siberia and Alaska.

Details of the latest findings were unveiled at the UK Royal Society's Summer Science Exhibition.

Ancient lake

Scientist Silvia Gonzalez of Liverpool's John Moores University and her colleagues found the footprints in the quarry, some 130km (80 miles) south-east of Mexico City, in 2003. But they have only finished dating them this year.

"The footprints were preserved as trace fossils in volcanic ash along what was the shoreline of an ancient volcanic lake," Dr Gonzalez said.

Their footprints were soon covered in more ash and lake sediments and, when water levels rose, became as solid as concrete.

Dr Gonzalez was under no illusions that the finding would be controversial: "It's going to be an archaeological bomb," she told the BBC News website, "and we're up for a fight."

The team used several methods to date a variety of material from the site near Puebla, Mexico, in order to be sure they were right about the age.

"We have materials that have been dated below the footprint layer, the footprint layer itself and on top of the footprint layer. Everything is making sense," said Dr Gonzalez.

The researchers used radiocarbon dating on shells and animal bones in the sequences and dated mammoth teeth by a technique called electron spin resonance. The sediments themselves were dated by optically stimulated luminescence.

"Some lake sediments were incorporated into the ash and were baked. They look like small fragments of brick and these were the ones we dated in the footprint layer. They gave us a result of 38,000 years," Dr Gonzalez.

Land crossing

Under the traditional view of how the Americas were settled, humans trekked from Siberia to Alaska across a land bridge that linked these land masses at the end of the last ice age (between 10,000 and 12,500 years ago).

Central to this theory, called the Clovis First model, are Clovis points - the tools these settlers used to hunt large beasts, or megafauna, such as mammoths and mastodonts.

"The existence of 40,000-year-old human footprints in Mexico means that the Clovis First model of human occupation can no longer be accepted as the first evidence of human presence in the Americas," said co-investigator David Huddart, of Liverpool John Moores.

Dr Michael Faught, an expert in early American archaeology, said the findings sounded interesting: "It would be significant if it were demonstrated, but usually those (early) sites don't hold up well," he told the BBC News website.

But, he added: "There's more and more evidence that Alaska was not the only place people came into the continent."

Dr Gonzalez is a proponent of the Coastal Migration Theory. This proposes that people arrived in boats, hugging the coastline from North to South.

But where these settlers came from is still a mystery, she says. Some have proposed that the earliest humans to reach the continent could have come from south-east Asia or even Australia.

Genetic studies of present-day Native American populations support a recent arrival from north-east Asia, which agrees well with an entry through the Beringian land bridge at the end of the last Ice Age.

Dr Gonzalez suggests that the earliest settlers may have become extinct and therefore left no genetic legacy in modern populations. She thinks these hunters may have been highly mobile, living in small groups, perhaps explaining why they left scant trace of their presence.

Dr Gonzalez and ancient DNA expert Alan Cooper, of the University of Adelaide in Australia, have managed to extract genetic material from three molars belonging to Peñon Woman III, a 13,000-year-old partial skeleton from Mexico. The work and analysis is still underway.

On April 12, 1776, the legislature of North Carolina authorized its delegates to the Continental Congress to join with others in a declaration of separation from Great Britain; the first colony to instruct its delegates to take the actual initiative was Virginia on May 15. On June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee of Virginia offered a resolution to the Congress to the effect “that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States. . . .” A committee consisting of Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R. Livingston, and Roger Sherman was organized to “prepare a declaration to the effect of the said first resolution.” The Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776. Most delegates signed the Declaration August 2, but George Wythe (Va.) signed August 27; Richard Henry Lee (Va.), Elbridge Gerry (Mass.), and Oliver Wolcott (Conn.) in September; Matthew Thornton (N.H.), not a delegate until September, in November; and Thomas McKean (Del.), although present on July 4, not until 1781 by special permission, having served in the army in the interim.

Sunspots Everywhere - What’s Going On With the Sun?

Today’s sunspot count has jumped to 168. The Sun is peppered with spots covering most of the Earth facing surface. Sunspot region 783 poses the greatest threat of M-Class flares.

 

So what caused the Sun to suddenly act out? Well, we just don’t know. I am working feverously to find out. Everything I learn is being placed in the sequel book “Cosmic Rain”. This book picks up where “Solar Rain” stops. Now you can read all about how we have greatly enhanced our knowledge of what causes the extreme weather phenomena on Earth as it is directly connected to the Sun. ‘Solar Rain’ goes into great detail using 350 pages in sixteen chapters. Charts and color photos help make it an easier ready for those just learning about this incredible causal effect. By the time you finish reading ‘Solar Rain’, your very first question may be: “But what causes the “solar cycles”? In the sequel “Cosmic Rain”, we ex! plore GRB’s (gamma ray burst) Pulsars, Quasars, and assorted energy waves (plasma, magnetic, gravity) coming from the center of our galaxy (Milky Way) and near by Andromeda. Report: OPEC has lost control over oil prices

LONDON — OPEC members have lost control over the oil market.

A report by the Center for Global Energy Studies asserted that the price of crude oil was no longer under OPEC control, Middle East Newsline reported. The report said OPEC, with spare production capacity of 1.5 million barrels per day, does not have sufficient capacity to significantly reduce oil prices, which have exceeded $47 a barrel.

"This leaves only the thinnest margin to cope with the unexpected and the market is worried that it could quickly be used up in the event of an interruption to supply or a cold winter," the report said.

The center said OPEC production in the third quarter of 2004 reached 29.19 million barrels per day. The figure did not include Iraq.

China, Russia warn of world domination
MOSCOW — Russia and China warned other nations Friday against attempts to dominate global affairs and interfere in the domestic issues of sovereign nations in what appeared to be a veiled expression of their irritation with U.S. policy.

Presidents Vladimir Putin and Hu Jintao signed a joint declaration after two days of talks calling for a stronger United Nations role in global affairs and opposing attempts "to impose models of social and political development from outside."

The two leaders also urged other states to renounce "striving for monopoly and domination in international affairs and attempts to divide nations into leaders and those being led."

While the declaration did not identify any specific country, it echoed similar veiled hints by Moscow and Beijing about U.S. policy in global affairs.

After decades of rivalry, Moscow and Beijing have developed what they call a strategic partnership since the 1991 Soviet collapse, pledging their adherence to a "multipolar world," a term that refers to their opposition to U.S. domination.

China and Russia share a concern about increased U.S. influence in Central Asia since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, which led to American troop deployments in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan for operations in neighboring Afghanistan.

While Russia remains a U.S. ally in fighting terror, relations often have been strained by U.S. concerns about backtracking on democracy under Putin and Moscow's worries about what it sees as U.S. meddling in ex-Soviet republics. Russia also bristles at western calls for peace talks with rebels in Chechnya.

Beijing is unhappy about U.S. ties with Taiwan. Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory and says the island has no right to conduct foreign relations.

"We reinforced our mutual support on key issues like Taiwan and Chechnya which concern our vital interests," Hu said after the talks.

The two leaders gave an upbeat assessment on Russian-Chinese relations, which have flourished in recent years and were cemented in a border treaty ratified this year.

"We have set a solid foundation for friendship, trust and cooperation for Russia and China for a long time to come," Putin said Friday.

Moscow and Beijing dominate the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, a regional security grouping that also includes the ex-Soviet Central Asian nations of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Uzbekistan's President Islam Karimov, facing Western criticism for his government's bloody suppression of a May uprising, has found staunch support in Moscow and Beijing.

After their meetings in Moscow, Putin and Hu were due to meet again Tuesday at the SCO summit in Kazakhstan.

"We are increasing coordination and cooperation on important regional and international issues, such as guaranteeing stability in Central Asia, the SCO, reform of the United Nations and the nuclear problem of the Korean Peninsula," Hu said.

The Russian and Chinese militaries are due to hold their first joint maneuvers later this year — which some observers have seen as Russia's response to cooling relations with the U.S. and other Western nations.

China has purchased billions of dollars worth of fighters, missiles, submarines and destroyers after the Soviet collapse, becoming the main customer for struggling Russian defense industries.

Now it is eager to tap into Russian oil and gas to fuel its booming economy, and has lobbied hard for priority access over Japan to an oil pipeline carrying Siberian crude to Asian markets.

Russian-Chinese trade amounted to about $20 billion last year, and Hu told the ITAR-Tass news agency that it could reach between $60 billion and $80 billion by 2010.

REMINDER:  Far from Earth, NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft is about to
poke a hole through the crust of Comet Tempel 1.  When? July 3rd at
10:52
p.m. PDT  (July 4th at 0552 UT).  A plume of gas and dust emerging
from
the hole could cause the comet to brighten so much that sky watchers
on
Earth can see it through binoculars or even with the unaided eye from
dark-sky sites. Observers in the western United States, Hawaii,
Mexico
and  parts of Central and South America are favored.  From those
places
the comet hangs in the southwestern sky after sunset on July 3rd--at
the right place and time to view the impact.  If the comet does
brighten,
it will look like a faint fuzzy smudge not far from the bright star

Full text: Bush's Iraq speech


Following is the full text of the speech made by US President George W Bush on the first anniversary of the US handover of power to Iraqis.

Thank you and good evening. I am pleased to visit Fort Bragg - "Home of the Airborne and Special Operations Forces." It is an honour to speak before you tonight.

My greatest responsibility as president is to protect the American people, and that is your calling as well.

I thank you for your service, your courage and your sacrifice. I thank your families, who support you in your vital work.

The soldiers and families of Fort Bragg have contributed mightily to our efforts to secure our country and promote peace. America is grateful - and so is your commander-in-chief.

'Defending our freedom'

The troops here and across the world are fighting a global war on terror.

This war reached our shores on 11 September 2001.

The terrorists who attacked us - and the terrorists we face - murder in the name of a totalitarian ideology that hates freedom, rejects tolerance, and despises all dissent.

Their aim is to remake the Middle East in their own grim image of tyranny and oppression - by toppling governments, driving us out of the region, and exporting terror.

To achieve these aims, they have continued to kill - in Madrid, Istanbul, Jakarta, Casablanca, Riyadh, Bali, and elsewhere.

The terrorists believe that free societies are essentially corrupt and decadent, and with a few hard blows they can force us to retreat. They are mistaken.

After 11 September, I made a commitment to the American people: this nation will not wait to be attacked again. We will take the fight to the enemy. We will defend our freedom.

Iraq is the latest battlefield in this war.

'Mission clear

Many terrorists who kill innocent men, women, and children on the streets of Baghdad are followers of the same murderous ideology that took the lives of our citizens in New York, Washington, and Pennsylvania.

There is only one course of action against them: to defeat them abroad before they attack us at home.

The commander in charge of coalition operations in Iraq - who is also senior commander at this base - General John Vines, put it well the other day.

He said: "We either deal with terrorism and this extremism abroad, or we deal with it when it comes to us."

Our mission in Iraq is clear. We are hunting down the terrorists. We are helping Iraqis build a free nation that is an ally in the war on terror.

We are advancing freedom in the broader Middle East. We are removing a source of violence and instability - and laying the foundation of peace for our children and our grandchildren.

Sacrifice

The work in Iraq is difficult and dangerous. Like most Americans, I see the images of violence and bloodshed.

Every picture is horrifying - and the suffering is real. Amid all this violence, I know Americans ask the question: is the sacrifice worth it?

It is worth it, and it is vital to the future security of our country. And tonight I will explain the reasons why.

Some of the violence you see in Iraq is being carried out by ruthless killers who are converging on Iraq to fight the advance of peace and freedom.

Our military reports that we have killed or captured hundreds of foreign fighters in Iraq who have come from Saudi Arabia, Syria, Iran, Egypt, Sudan, Yemen, Libya and other nations.

'Hateful ideology'

They are making common cause with criminal elements, Iraqi insurgents, and remnants of Saddam Hussein's regime who want to restore the old order.

They fight because they know that the survival of their hateful ideology is at stake.

They know that as freedom takes root in Iraq, it will inspire millions across the Middle East to claim their liberty as well.

And when the Middle East grows in democracy, prosperity, and hope, the terrorists will lose their sponsors, lose their recruits, and lose their hopes for turning that region into a base for attacks on America and our allies around the world.

Some wonder whether Iraq is a central front in the war on terror.

Among the terrorists, there is no debate. Hear the words of Osama Bin Laden: "This Third World War ... is raging" in Iraq. "The whole world is watching this war." He says it will end in "victory and glory or misery and humiliation".

The terrorists know that the outcome will leave them emboldened, or defeated. So, they are waging a campaign of murder and destruction. And there is no limit to the innocent lives they are willing to take.

We see the nature of the enemy in terrorists who exploded car bombs along a busy shopping street in Baghdad - including one outside a mosque.

We see the nature of the enemy in terrorists who sent a suicide bomber to a teaching hospital in Mosul.

And we see the nature of the enemy in terrorists who behead civilian hostages and broadcast their atrocities for the world to see.

'Terrorists failing'

These are savage acts of violence - but they have not brought the terrorists any closer to achieving their strategic objectives.

The terrorists - both foreign and Iraqi - failed to stop the transfer of sovereignty.

They failed to break our coalition and force a mass withdrawal by our allies. They failed to incite an Iraqi civil war. They failed to prevent free elections. They failed to stop the formation of a democratic Iraqi government that represents all of Iraq's diverse population.

And they failed to stop Iraqis from signing up in large numbers with the police forces and the army to defend their new democracy.

The lesson of this experience is clear: the terrorists can kill the innocent - but they cannot stop the advance of freedom.

The only way our enemies can succeed is if we forget the lessons of 11 September 11 if we abandon the Iraqi people to men like Zarqawi and if we yield the future of the Middle East to men like Bin Laden.

For the sake of our nation's security, this will not happen on my watch.

'Significant progress'

A little over a year ago, I spoke to the nation and described our coalition's goal in Iraq.

I said that America's mission in Iraq is to defeat an enemy and give strength to a friend - a free, representative government that is an ally in the war on terror, and a beacon of hope in a part of the world that is desperate for reform.

I outlined the steps we would take to achieve this goal: we would hand authority over to a sovereign Iraqi government... we would help Iraqis hold free elections by January 2005 ... we would continue helping Iraqis rebuild their nation's infrastructure and economy ... we would encourage more international support for Iraq's democratic transition ... and we would enable Iraqis to take increasing responsibility for their own security and stability.

In the past year, we have made significant progress:

One year ago today, we restored sovereignty to the Iraqi people.

In January 2005, more than eight million Iraqi men and women voted in elections that were free and fair - and took place on time.

We continued our efforts to help them rebuild their country. Rebuilding a country after three decades of tyranny is hard - and rebuilding while at war is even harder.

Our progress has been uneven - but progress is being made.

We are improving roads, and schools, and health clinics ... and working to improve basic services like sanitation, electricity, and water.

And together with our allies, we will help the new Iraqi government deliver a better life for its citizens.

In the past year, the international community has stepped forward with vital assistance. Some 30 nations have troops in Iraq, and many others are contributing non-military assistance.

Building Iraqi forces

The United Nations is in Iraq to help Iraqis write a constitution and conduct their next elections.

Thus far, some 40 countries and three international organizations have pledged about $34bn in assistance for Iraqi reconstruction.

More than 80 countries and international organisations recently came together in Brussels to co-ordinate their efforts to help Iraqis provide for their security and rebuild their country.

And next month, donor countries will meet in Jordan to support Iraqi reconstruction.

Whatever our differences in the past, the world understands that success in Iraq is critical to the security of all our nations.

As German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder said at the White House yesterday: "There can be no question a stable and democratic Iraq is in the vested interest of not just Germany, but also Europe."

Finally, we have continued our efforts to equip and train Iraqi security forces.

We have made gains in both the number and quality of those forces.

Today Iraq has more than 160,000 security forces trained and equipped for a variety of missions.

Iraqi forces have fought bravely - helping to capture terrorists and insurgents in Najaf, Samarra, Falluja, and Mosul.

And in the past month, Iraqi forces have led a major anti-terrorist campaign in Baghdad called Operation Lightning - which has led to the capture of hundreds of suspected insurgents.

Like free people everywhere, Iraqis want to be defended by their own countrymen - and we are helping Iraqis assume those duties.

Coalition strategy

The progress in the past year has been significant - and we have a clear path forward.

To complete the mission, we will continue to hunt down the terrorists and insurgents.

To complete the mission, we will prevent al-Qaeda and other foreign terrorists from turning Iraq into what Afghanistan was under the Taleban - a safe haven from which they could launch attacks on America and our friends.

And the best way to complete the mission is to help Iraqis build a free nation that can govern itself, sustain itself, and defend itself.

So our strategy going forward has both a military track and a political track.

The principal task of our military is to find and defeat the terrorists - and that is why we are on the offence. And as we pursue the terrorists, our military is helping to train Iraqi security forces so that they can defend their people and fight the enemy on their own.

Our strategy can be summed up this way: as the Iraqis stand up, we will stand down.

We have made progress - but we have a lot more work to do.

Today, Iraqi security forces are at different levels of readiness. Some are capable of taking on the terrorists and insurgents by themselves.

A larger number can plan and execute anti-terrorist operations with coalition support. The rest are forming and not yet ready to participate fully in security operations.

Our task is to make the Iraqi units fully capable and independent. We are building up Iraqi security forces as quickly as possible, so they can assume the lead in defeating the terrorists and insurgents.

Our coalition is devoting considerable resources and manpower to this critical task.

Thousands of coalition troops are involved in the training and equipping of Iraqi security forces.

Nato is establishing a military academy near Baghdad to train the next generation of Iraqi military leaders - and 17 nations are contributing troops to the Nato training mission.

New steps

Iraqi Army and Police are being trained by personnel from Italy, Germany, Ukraine, Turkey, Poland, Romania, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

Today dozens of nations are working toward a common objective: an Iraq that can defend itself, defeat its enemies, and secure its freedom.

To further prepare Iraqi forces to fight the enemy on their own, we are taking three new steps:

First, we are partnering coalition units with Iraqi units. These coalition-Iraqi teams are conducting operations together in the field. These combined operations are giving Iraqis a chance to experience how the most professional armed forces in the world operate in combat.

Second, we are embedding coalition "Transition Teams" inside Iraqi units. These teams are made up of coalition officers and non-commissioned officers who live, work, and fight together with their Iraqi comrades. Under US command, they are providing battlefield advice and assistance to Iraqi forces during combat operations. Between battles, they are assisting the Iraqis with important skills - such as urban combat, and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance techniques.

Third, we are working with the Iraqi ministries of interior and defence to improve their capabilities to coordinate anti-terrorist operations. We are helping them develop command and control structures. We are also providing them with civilian and military leadership training, so Iraq's new leaders can more effectively manage their forces in the fight against terror.

The new Iraqi security forces are proving their courage every day. More than 2,000 members of the Iraqi security forces have given their lives in the line of duty.

Thousands more have stepped forward, and are now in training to serve their nation. With each engagement, Iraqi soldiers grow more battle-hardened, and their officers grow more experienced.

We have learned that Iraqis are courageous and that they need additional skills.

That is why a major part of our mission is to train them so they can do the fighting and our troops can come home.

No withdrawal deadline

I recognise that Americans want our troops to come home as quickly as possible.

So do I. Some contend that we should set a deadline for withdrawing US forces.

Let me explain why that would be a serious mistake.

Setting an artificial timetable would send the wrong message to the Iraqis - who need to know that America will not leave before the job is done.

It would send the wrong message to our troops - who need to know that we are serious about completing the mission they are risking their lives to achieve.

And it would send the wrong message to the enemy - who would know that all they have to do is to wait us out.

We will stay in Iraq as long as we are needed - and not a day longer.

Some Americans ask me, if completing the mission is so important, why don't you send more troops?

If our commanders on the ground say we need more troops, I will send them. But our commanders tell me they have the number of troops they need to do their job.

Sending more Americans would undermine our strategy of encouraging Iraqis to take the lead in this fight.

And sending more Americans would suggest that we intend to stay forever - when we are in fact working for the day when Iraq can defend itself and we can leave.

As we determine the right force level, our troops can know that I will continue to be guided by the advice that matters - the sober judgment of our military leaders.

Building 'new Iraq'

The other critical element of our strategy is to help ensure that the hopes Iraqis expressed at the polls in January are translated into a secure democracy.

The Iraqi people are emerging from decades of tyranny and oppression.

Under the regime of Saddam Hussein, the Shia and Kurds were brutally oppressed - and the vast majority of Sunni Arabs were also denied their basic rights while senior regime officials enjoyed the privileges of unchecked power.

The challenge facing Iraqis today is to put this past behind them, and come together to build a new Iraq that includes all its people.

They are doing that by building the institutions of a free society - a society based on freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, freedom of religion, and equal justice under law.

The Iraqis have held free elections and established a transitional national assembly.

The next step is to write a good constitution that enshrines these freedoms in permanent law.

The assembly plans to expand its constitutional drafting committee to include more Sunni Arabs.

Many Sunnis who opposed the January elections are now taking part in the democratic process - and that is essential to Iraq's future.

After a constitution is written, the Iraqi people will have a chance to vote on it. If approved, Iraqis will go to the polls again, to elect a new government under their new, permanent constitution.

Changing Middle East

By taking these critical steps and meeting their deadlines, Iraqis will bind their multiethnic society together in a democracy that respects the will of the majority and protects minority rights.

As Iraqis grow confident that the democratic progress they are making is real and permanent, more will join the political process.

And as Iraqis see that their military can protect them, more will step forward with vital intelligence to help defeat the enemies of a free Iraq.

The combination of political and military reform will lay a solid foundation for a free and stable Iraq.

As Iraqis make progress toward a free society, the effects are being felt beyond Iraq's borders.

Before our coalition liberated Iraq, Libya was secretly pursuing nuclear weapons. Today the leader of Libya has given up his chemical and nuclear weapons programs.

Across the broader Middle East, people are claiming their freedom.

In the last few months, we have witnessed elections in the Palestinian territories and Lebanon.

These elections are inspiring democratic reformers in places like Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Our strategy to defend ourselves and spread freedom is working.

The rise of freedom in this vital region will eliminate the conditions that feed radicalism and ideologies of murder - and make our nation safer.

'Holding firm'

We have more work to do, and there will be tough moments that test America's resolve. We are fighting against men with blind hatred - and armed with lethal weapons - who are capable of any atrocity.

They wear no uniform; they respect no laws of warfare or morality. They take innocent lives to create chaos for the cameras. They are trying to shake our will in Iraq - just as they tried to shake our will on 11 September 2001.

They will fail. The terrorists do not understand America. The American people do not falter under threat - and we will not allow our future to be determined by car bombers and assassins.

America and our friends are in a conflict that demands much of us. It demands the courage of our fighting men and women ... it demands the steadfastness of our allies ... and it demands the perseverance of our citizens.

We accept these burdens - because we know what is at stake. We fight today, because Iraq now carries the hope of freedom in a vital region of the world - and the rise of democracy will be the ultimate triumph over radicalism and terror.

And we fight today because terrorists want to attack our country and kill our citizens - and Iraq is where they are making their stand. So we will fight them there ... we will fight them across the world - and we will stay in the fight until the fight is won.

America has done difficult work before. From our desperate fight for independence, to the darkest days of a Civil War, to the hard-fought battles against tyranny in the 20th century, there were many chances to lose our heart, our nerve, or our way.

But Americans have always held firm, because we have always believed in certain truths.

We know that if evil is not confronted, it gains in strength and audacity, and returns to strike us again.

We know that when the work is hard, the proper response is not retreat, it is courage.

And we know that this great ideal of human freedom is entrusted to us in a special way - and that the ideal of liberty is worth defending.

Thanking the military

In this time of testing, our troops can know: the American people are behind you.

Next week, our nation has an opportunity to make sure that support is felt by every soldier, sailor, airman, coast guardsman, and Marine at every outpost across the world.

This 4 July, I ask you to find a way to thank the men and women defending our freedom - by flying the flag ... sending letters to our troops in the field ... or helping the military family down the street.

The Department of Defence has set up a website - AmericaSupportsYou.mil.

You can go there to learn about private efforts in your own community.

At this time when we celebrate our freedom, let us stand with the men and women who defend us all.

To the soldiers in this hall, and our servicemen and women across the globe: I thank you for your courage under fire and your service to our nation.

I thank our military families - the burden of war falls especially hard on you.

In this war, we have lost good men and women who left our shores to defend freedom - and did not live to make the journey home.

I have met with families grieving the loss of loved ones who were taken from us too soon.

I have been inspired by their strength in the face of such great loss.

We pray for the families. And the best way to honour the lives that have been given in this struggle is to complete the mission.

I thank those of you who have re-enlisted in an hour when your country needs you.

And to those watching tonight who are considering a military career, there is no higher calling than service in our armed forces.

'Great turning points'

We live in freedom because every generation has produced patriots willing to serve a cause greater than themselves.

Those who serve today are taking their rightful place among the greatest generations that have worn our nation's uniform.

When the history of this period is written, the liberation of Afghanistan and the liberation of Iraq will be remembered as great turning points in the story of freedom.

After 11 September 2001, I told the American people that the road ahead would be difficult - and that we would prevail.

Well, it has been difficult. And we are prevailing. Our enemies are brutal - but they are no match for the United States of America - and they are no match for the men and women of the United States military.

China Economy Rising at Pace to Rival U.S.

GUANGZHOU, China, June 26 - A line of Chinese-made cars began rolling onto a ship here Friday, bound for Europe. The cars, made at a gleaming new Honda factory on the outskirts of this sprawling city near Hong Kong, signal the latest move by China to follow Japan and South Korea in building itself into a global competitor in one of the cornerstones of the industrial economy.

China's debut as an auto exporter, small as it may be for now, foretells a broader challenge to a half-century of American economic and political ascendance. The nation's manufacturing companies are building wealth at a remarkable rate, using some of that money to buy assets abroad. And China has been scouring the world to acquire energy resources, with the bid to buy an American oil company only the latest overture.

Indeed, fierce domestic competition and a faster accumulation of financial assets are laying the groundwork for the arc of China's rise to be far greater than Japan's.

"It's going to be like the Arabs in the 70's and the Japanese in the 80's - we were worried they'd buy everything," said William Belchere, the chief Asia economist for Macquarie Securities in Hong Kong. But unlike those previous challenges, which soon faded, "longer term," he added, China will "be a much bigger force."

China's economy has risen rapidly with foreign expertise and investment. The Guangzhou airport here has a terminal designed by an American company, boarding gates supplied by a Danish company, and an air traffic control tower engineered by a company from Singapore.

The resulting bilateral corporate tango - in contrast to the confrontations reminiscent of the 1980's and early 1990's when Japanese capital poured into the United States - means that China has many American corporate comrades, who have a stake in helping generate its growth.

China, economists and Asia experts say, does not face some of the inherent limitations that ultimately stymied Japan and led to economic stagnation there over the last 14 years. With its giant population, China is developing a large and diverse economy, creating an almost Darwinian competition for a domestic market that has extremely low-cost companies ready to export inexpensive goods around the globe.

"The economy is much more flexible, adaptable than Japan's," said Liang Hong, an economist in Hong Kong for Goldman Sachs. "Being a continental economy is an advantage because it has competition within."

To be sure, China is still at an earlier stage of development than was Japan when its economic rise became a national obsession in the United States. In the 1980's and early 1990's, Japanese companies claimed a sizable chunk of the American car market and purchased Rockefeller Center and the Pebble Beach golf course.

The bid by the China National Offshore Oil Corporation for Unocal has raised worries among some politicians in Washington. That $18.5 billion bid comes as America's trade deficit with China is ratcheting ever higher and the dollar is getting support from rising inflows of Chinese capital, which also helps support low interest rates.

More disconcerting to others in Washington is China's growing ability to finance any political and military ambitions. China has missiles with nuclear weapons that intelligence experts describe as already able to hit not just Hawaii but probably California. Beijing also remains chilly toward American entreaties to put more pressure on North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program.

In contrast, Japan's military dependence on the United States made it more willing to accept a steep appreciation in the yen in 1985 that hobbled Japanese exporters. So far, China has put off Bush administration demands to let its yuan appreciate.

But China's economic rise also faces many obstacles. Its banks have huge portfolios of nonperforming loans that have not yet become a crippling problem because of rapid growth, but that could, as in Japan, make a recession someday even harder to combat.

Banks suffering from fraud and political pressures have frequently made poor decisions on which borrowers should receive loans, so that China requires more investment for each dollar of economic growth than many rivals. Xu Xiaonian, an economist at the China Europe International Business School in Shanghai, said that China and Japan shared weak traditions of corporate governance, shareholder rights and the rule of law, and this has hurt efficiency.

"Efficiency rules the game and will decide who wins the game, and not how fast a country grows," he said.

China also has a one-party political system that has not changed nearly as quickly as its economy over the last quarter-century, and a population that will soon start to age rapidly because of the "one child" policy. The Asian Development Bank forecasts that from 2015 to 2030, China's labor force will drop to 813 million from 842 million, as India's rises.

The big question is how smoothly China will make the transition from central planning to capitalism.

One of the best places to see the scope of China's challenge to the West, including China's economic strengths and its political weaknesses, is here in Guangzhou, a city of 12.2 million that is often compared to Los Angeles.

At the new Honda factory, a tall fence of yellow wire mesh encloses a long section of the assembly line, where white robots poke and crane their long, vulture-like heads into gray, half-completed car bodies to perform 2,100 of the 3,000 welds needed to assemble each car.

Workers in white uniforms and gray caps complete the rest of the welds, working as quickly as workers in American factories - but earning roughly $1.50 an hour in wages and benefits, compared with $55 an hour for General Motors and Ford factories in the United States.

"Our export activities are based on the synergy of China's competitive advantage and Honda's global network," said Atsuyoshi Hyogo, the chairman of the Honda subsidiary here.

As G.M. and Ford struggle with high health care costs for unionized work forces with an average age of nearly 50 in the United States, most of the Honda workers here appear to be in their 20's. They are unlikely to go to the doctor very often and when they do, doctors here charge less than $5 for an office visit and administering a few stitches.

At a long hall in downtown Guangzhou, it quickly becomes apparent why the Honda workers are young and the pay is low. Rows of young men and women sit in plastic chairs watching two huge television screens covered with Chinese characters and numbers. While it resembles an off-track betting parlor in Hong Kong, 100 miles down the Pearl River, this is really the city's main government-run employment center.

Some of the employers are hiring dozens of workers at a time, but one of the columns on each screen shows a requirement that would be illegal to list in the United States: the age range for acceptable applicants, most often 20 to 35.

The official average unemployment rate in China's cities is 4.2 percent. But that excludes China's vast army of rural adults with little or no work to do, an army estimated as high as 150 million people. Millions move to the cities each year, an immense migration that slowed increases in Chinese industrial wages until the last year or two, when the Chinese economy has grown so rapidly that employers have begun bidding up workers' wages anyway.

The plight of these migrants seems to be improving, and as it improves they may become even more attractive job applicants for multinationals looking for workers.

"People who came here looking for jobs used to be dirty and wearing bad clothes, but now they are coming in suits and ties," said Zhang Jieming, the director of the Guangzhou Bureau of Labor and Social Security.

One question is how China can retain the political stability it has shown for most of the last three decades while moving toward more democratic processes that the Communist Party has long claimed as its goal. A neighborhood election here on Saturday suggested that the path to political pluralism may be long.

Gathered in a junior high school classroom were 45 representatives elected by 5,400 neighborhood residents. Only the representatives, not the general public, were allowed to vote for the next level of government, a seven-member council.

Liu Yonghong, the director of the council and a Communist Party member, was re-elected, 44 to 1, defeating a nonparty member. Chen Xuangu, the deputy director and also a party member, turned back his opponent, also not a party member, by 40 to 5.

The winners may not be in a hurry for change.

"If we have stability," said Li Weijie, the director general of the municipal bureau of civil affairs, "we can have successful development."

For the last five billion years of our planet's violent history, Earth has been walloped by comets. These small bodies and their asteroid cousins whacked Earth often in its early years, knocking the stuffing out of our young world. As the solar system matured, impacts happened less often—but they have never ceased. Earth bears its scars in the form of weathered craters and extinct species.

This 4th of July is payback time. For the first time in history, Earth gets to strike back.

The weapon: a NASA spacecraft named Deep Impact.

The target: a 10-mile wide comet named Tempel 1.

Deep Impact is going to shoot an 820-pound projectile into the rocky, icy nucleus of Comet Tempel 1. The 23,000 mph collision will form a big crater, and Deep impact will observe the stages of its development, how deep it gets and how wide it becomes. Researchers expect a plume of gas and dust to spray out of the crater. Deep Impact will measure its composition and record what the billowing plume does to the comet's atmosphere. In all, Deep Impact should be able to peer into the new crater for almost 15 minutes before the craft speeds away, continuing, like its cometary quarry, to orbit forever around the Sun.

Back on Earth, amateur astronomers will be watching, too. The comet glows like a 10th magnitude star and can be seen through backyard telescopes. It should brighten considerably when Deep Impact strikes. The impact plume will reflect sunlight, boosting the visibility of the comet to 5th or 6th magnitude, making it a faint naked-eye object. The Pacific side of Earth will be facing the comet at the moment of impact (0552 UT on July 4th; 10:52 pm PDT on July 3rd); observers in Hawaii, Mexico and the US southwest are favored. Other spacecraft have flown by comets. Most recently, in 2004, Stardust approached Comet Wild 2 close enough to gather dust particles from the comet's atmosphere for return to Earth in 2006. Deep Space 1 visited Comet Borrelly in 2001; Giotto and others visited Comet Halley in 1986. We've seen what a comet's dark crusty nucleus looks like from the outside. Deep Impact, for the first time, will poke a hole through the crust and let us look inside.

Why Comet Tempel 1? We know of more than a thousand comets. Choosing this particular one has a lot to do with timing: Mission planners needed a comet that would be relatively easy to reach at about the time the spacecraft was ready for launch. According to principal investigator Mike A'Hearn of the University of Maryland, Tempel 1 has a big nucleus; the impact should form a crater, not obliterate the comet. Tempel 1 also has an orbit that would allow the spacecraft to reach the comet with a high velocity and on the sunward side, so that the impact would be sunlit and visible from Earth. "Tempel 1 was in the right place at the right time," says mission co-investigator Lucy McFadden.

Blasting a comet is satisfying on many levels.

For one thing, it could save our planet. Comet Tempel 1 is not on a collision course with Earth, but suppose, one day, astronomers find a comet that is. What kind of projectile or bomb should we use to deflect or destroy it? If comets break into dangerously-big pieces when they're "touched," thus multiplying the hazard, shooting at them might not be a good idea. Consider Deep Impact to be a first experiment in planetary protection.

For another, it reveals the true value of comets. Is there "stuff" in there we can use? NASA is planning to send people back to the Moon by 2020, followed by trips to Mars and beyond; this is NASA's Vision for Space Exploration. Eventually comets could serve as interplanetary filling stations, providing explorers with raw materials they need, particularly water, which can be broken apart into hydrogen (for rocket fuel) and oxygen (to breathe) or simply melted and drank. Deep Impact is going to help planners understand exactly what materials comets contain and how difficult they might be to extract.

Finally, Deep Impact takes us back to the beginning--of everything. Impacts are the process by which the planets in our solar system formed. One big example: Some 4.5 billion years ago a planetesimal body the size of Mars sideswiped the Earth, ripping off its crust and creating a huge ring of debris which lasted a year or so. Much of that debris later collided with itself to form a new world, which we now see as the Moon.

About half a billion years later, the Earth and Moon were hit by an act of cosmic terror unseen since then. A brief "period of late heavy bombardment" left the Earth and Moon a wasteland, and as we look up at the Moon, we see the results as the huge impact basins that form the eyes and face of the Man in the Moon. Even after that period subsided, comets kept on smashing into Earth, bringing with them the building blocks of life--carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. Had there been no impacts, some scientists believe, there would be no life on Earth.

And once life formed, the process continued. At least one of the great extinctions of the past can be traced to the impact of a comet or an asteroid some 65 million years ago, resulting in the extinction of 70% of all species of life. It also led to great change in the history of life; instead of an age of reptiles, there was an age of mammals. And out of all this life there arose one small group of humans, who were inspired to send a return package.

Our planet comes full circle: prepare for Deep Impact.
