1. Rule 13 WHILE TACKING: it mentions "Passess head to wind" is this when the
jib flaps, or both jib & main, .
when the jib and main are both luffing while close hauled, this is head to wind.
main will generally fill before the jib, Main sail determines which tack you are
on. so i would say passing head to wind depend son the position of the main..
2. Rule 18 when does Mark room rights end. When transom clears mark on next leg,
or until outside the mark room circle.
Zone The area around a mark within a distance of three hull lengths of the
boat nearer to it. A boat is in the zone when any part of her hull is in the
zone.
3.Rule 18 (e) Situation is four boats to mark, A,B,C,D
A has overlap on B but not C, B has overlap on C, and D is even with C.
They enter the four boat length circle .
A calls for room at the mark to B , B replies I cannot as C is obstruction. C
replies D is obstruction cannot give room.
Can B & C use rule 18.e here to NOT give mark room to A?
NO. However if B,C,D are in the zone and on a puff A makes overlap with B from
clear astern before B's stern crosses into the zone, then Yes B, C can deny mark
room...

These are fun..you will get a bunch of opinions and here is mine. I do not
have my rule book in front of me..but here goes....
1. You are tacking when your bow passes head to wind and until you are on a
close hauled course..until then you are luffing. The sail is an indicator, but
not the rule. Direction is the key here.
2. You are leaving the mark when a line drawn across your stern no longer
intersects the buoy. (my understanding)
3. You can only protest one boat. So A would protest B. B would protest C
and C would protest D. Depending on the protest decision, B, if guilty, could
ask for redress from A; C would do likewise from B and D would be thrown out.Â
Obstruction is not a part of buoy room. Rule 14 collision is.
Fundamental Rule #2 (i believe) Fair play is the rule that would be applied to
someone who insists on NOT giving room as you suggest in your question. This
keeps blatant violators out of the fleet entirely.

Here is some info on the 2004 season from MY magazines:
Issue# 134, Winter 2003-2004 No report on S1M class
Issue # 135, Spring 2004 No report on S1M class
Issue# 136, Summer 2004 No report on S1M class
Issue# 137, Special 2005 issue:
Paul Fixx takes over class secretary duties for Rich Dannenhoffer ay Rich's
request due to the fact that the Dannenhoffers had gotten whacked by two Florida
hurricanes and Rich was unable to manage those events as well as the S1M class
sec'y duties.
Looks like 2004 may have been a wash-out unless someone has personal details to
the contrary.
I hope this helps complete the grid.

Art Jacobsen, then class secretary writes in the fall 1995 issue of MY #101:
"..We have failed to have a national championship in 1995."
Mr. Jacobsen goes on to lament that of 35 clubs sailing S1M at the time, none
volunteered to host the event. Additionally there was only one regional held
that year in all of AMYA S1m.

Get a piece of polystyrene about 1/2” wide by 1 ½” long and use the Testors
cement to weld it together. The patch should be on the inside keeping the
outside as smooth as possible. Don’t spread the crack, the Testors will
seep into the crack.

The 1995 NCR is a dilemma. All I can find in the literature is a rant by Art
Jacobsen (first class secretary) that we're the third largest class in the
AMYA, but no club has come forward to host the NCR. My mind is drawing a blank,
but I kinda think we didn't have an NCR in 1995. Hopefully some of the class
founders in Stowe will remember.
1996 is another thing. In the class report in Model Yachting magazine # 105, Art
Jacobsen says. "Congratulations to the 1996 Sling One Meter National Champion,
Walter Bryde of Coconut Creek 'now in Tampa FL.'" There is no Regatta Report to
be found in MY 106, 107, or 108, but in the Regatta Schedule printed in MY 102
the NCR for the "Victor Soling" is scheduled for March 23-24 in Indianatlantic,
FL. Club 183. Ah Ha! Club 183 is the Space Coasy Model Sailing Club, and
Indianatlantic abuts Melbourne. Not only that, my wife and I both sailed in it.
Sigh... getting old is the pits.

Mike - here's a bit more info from the Stowe, VT club. Stowe Yacht Club (SYC)
ran the NCR's in 1997, 1999 & 2007.
1997 - Bruce Nourjian 1st (SYC)
1999 - Charlie Berry 1st (SYC)
2007 - Bruce Nourjian 1st (SYC)
I have full results for 1999 & 2007; I can research old files for 1997 if the
Class wants this info in archives.
I also wonder where the perpetual trophy lies? I know winner's names went back
to at least 1998, but I believe all prior winners were accounted for.
Charlie Berry, Stowe

It would be nice to have an archive on the class website. I found full results
from 2003 in the files section along with 2008 and I have the scoreboard from
2005 at home. I forget how far back the name plates go on the perpetual trophy.

Greg,
My son's Soling supplied mast had broken twice, once on the water, and I decided
that a one-piece mast was the best solution. I think the only reason Victor
supplies a two-piece mast is for packaging in the box that is used. I have made
several one-piece Soling 1M
masts using poplar wood that I purchased at Home Depot. I bought a single piece
3/4 X 4 X 6 Ft.and then set my saw up to slice it to the exact width of the
Victor parts. I got a bunch of blanks. I then used my table router and made a
simple jig to form the side angles. After sanding to the final shape shown in
the plans, staining to my desired color and varnishing (rub on, not using a
brush) the finished mast is really beautiful. The best part of this entire mast
making project
is that the poplar wood is extremely strong and will bend to an incredible angle
before it breaks.
Just my two cents.

If you used THIN CA or even some MEDIUM CA's (some are thinish) the end
grain will wick the CA away from the joint with the result being little or no
bond . Must use THIN CA to fill the end grain of the joint and then use
Medium CA.

Mike -DO NOT mix and match adhesives.See my post using CA .Impregnate end
grain of wood with THIN CA ,then join pieces with Medium CA or if fit is
very tight use THIN CA for a very strong joint .If you prefer Epoxy, apply
the epoxy to the ends and using a heat gun heat the wood then apply the
epoxy and heat the epoxy which will penetrate/wick-into the end grain .Wipe
off excess epoxy Need to experiment with a like piece of wood determine heat
and degree of penetration. Before epoxy is cured apply room temp epoxy on
the ends and fixture the two peices for at least 24 hrs. Wipe of excess
epoxy carefully.

extensive use of CA, and it has worked well.
With that said- I have more experience AND confidence with epoxies,
especially in wood applications. The problem is holding the joint immoble for
long enough for the epoxy to cure.
Wonder if you could put a circle of epoxy- with CA in the middle- and have
the instant bond AND the security of epoxy? Hmmmm....
