Socialist Currents is the public discussion group of the Social Democrats USA. The Social Democrats USA is the legitimate organizational descendent of the Socialist Party of America of Eugene Debs, Norman Thomas, Max Shachtman and other great leaders of America's democratic socialist tradition. The term "Social Democracy" is frequently thrown about by the far Left as a pejorative to mean a watered down form of Socialism. Yet it is the Social Democratic movement that has given workers shorter work weeks, national health care, and equality of political participation throughout much of the world.

Beyond the reforms of social democracy, however the Social Democrats USA have a vision of socialism in which American political democracy would be greatly strengthened by a great economic democracy. This egalitarian socialist society would be one in which the primary forms of property of society would be those owned and democratically managed by workers and people themselves. This "cooperative commonwealth" would have a mixed economy in which small businesses, store owners, family farms,etc would also play a strong economic role in society.

As can be seen the political vision of the Social Democrats USA is opposed to totalitarian political ideologies whether Marxist Leninist, Fascist, or Theocratic. Historically our democratic socialist tradition has been in the forefront in opposing political tyranny in both its communist and fascist forms.
