Well, looks like a ripper going in Sandy Eggo... Currently over 1000
acres, and no sign of stopping. Since I just got the info, here's a
couple of quick links:

From what I gathered on the way into work, they're working AT LEAST the
following frequencies/talkgroups - I don't have IDs handy because all I have
are alpha tags ;)

The primary talkgroups are (RCS South) South Command 1, South Tac 1

According to dispatch, "commands and tacs are being assigned by the IC"...
Various strike teams and admin traffic are working on (RCS South) Heartland
Zone, Heartland Admin, Inland Dispatch, Inland Tac 11 and on San Diego 7B
(Admin).

The San Diego Type 3 strike team told San Diego they're working Division D
(near Willows Road) on White 1 - 154.2800.

I would also imagine CDF Local (151.1900), CNF Forest Net
(168.7500/415.4500), and any number of the CDF Commands and Tacs being used.

Thanks for the update... I'd monitor all of the CDF tac channels, as
well as the NIFC tac channels. There's bound to be air attack, so
170.000, 166.675, 151.22, 151.28, 151.295, and 151.31 should be good.

There were Type 1 and Type 3 strike teams from San Diego, South Bay, and
Inland en-route that I heard. I imagine North County and Rancho would be
sending them too so there should be traffic all over the RCS systems...

It might also be worthwhile to monitor the County Call and County Tacs on
RCS as well as things like LawAir for evacuation and interagency stuff...
Don't forget CHP on Gold 1 (39.6000)...

This thing looks BIG and not much has burned out there in recent memory...

From the CHP CAD -

10:14AM - FIRE APPEARS TO BE SPREADING TOWARD SOUTH GRADE RD
10:12AM - WILL BE MOVING CLOSURE JAPATUL AT TAVERN/DEHESA TO DEHESA
RD JEO SYCUAN CASINO IN ABOUT 45 MINS
10:07AM - FIRE HAS GONE OVER THE RIDGE - NOW IN PETERSON CREEK AREA
(TG 1254 G4)

Here's a list of freqs that CDF have been using today that have been pretty
active since I've been monitoring: I've also been noticing increased traffic
from spanish speaking personal in the 160 - 170 mhz range, any chance some of
these hot embers have started fires across the border or is this the normal
interference we usually get this close to the border.

I have some CDF radio info on my website. List of tactical and
command nets and maps for repeaters in at least the Cascade Region
(which unfortunatly is not San Diego ;) But it does have major freq
info and tips and hints on how to monitor large CDF fires with
details on the Incident Command System and how it works with fires
and frequency coordination etc. It is at
http://www.norcalscan.org/fire/cdf.html
Just click on Major Fire or Radio Information and enjoy. I will label
what the freqs below are that Joseph posted a couple posts back.
These labels are only the names assigned to the freqs. The Viejas
fire may have different names on these freqs but not likely...

Thanks Joseph and Smokey for your updates for all others to hear -
Northern California is under the large high pressure system but we
don't have the winds. Just temps of 70 degrees. Feels so good but
knowing what goes through a firefighter's mind - this is downright
scary weather right now.

I have the list of ctcss tones related to tone numbers below. It will

I just got back in from driving around San Diego the last 3 hours... The
smoke from the Viejas Fire is covering greater San Diego and it's been
raining ash in the eastern sections of town and the smell of "brush fire" is
prevalent everywhere. The fire's still burning hot and heavy... The news
people are saying 2000 acres but Im sure that will grow as visibility
improves.

Within the last 30 minutes the IC requested 10 additional strike teams of
any type, 10 water tenders, and 5 dozer strike teams. The fire's burning in
Lawson Valley, east of Jamul and is in structures in a number of places (I
heard at least two being worked by Inland fire units). I believe Station 63
(Lawson Valley Rural Fire Station) is in danger as well. Earlier (noonish) I
heard a call for 10 strike teams as well...

There's a LOT of equipment from all over the county out there. Early on in
the day, CDF said they were told by Sacramento to "send every single person
you have" to the incident and let the local government cover their areas. I
also heard them say "volunteers" were responding in CDF equipement.

For now, this is where I heard traffic -

CNF/CDF Command (Main IC) - CNF Admin Net - 168.1500
Forest Service Air-to-Ground - 170.000
CDF Air-to-Ground - 151.2200
Forest Service Air Tactics - 166.6750
Air-to-Air - 135.6750
White 1 - 154.2800
SD County Red - 155.0850

RCS System - South Command 1
    South Tac 1
East Command 1 (I can't monitor but they mentioned it as being the IC)
     East Tac 1
     Inland Dispatch
     Inland Command 9
     Inland Tac 11
     Inland Rural Admin
     Inland Admin
     Heartland Zone
     LawAir (Working multiple ASTREA units)
County Call (Agency to agency stuff)

I'm sure there's many more of the BIFC channels in use, but I didn't have my
AR8000 with me that's loaded with all of those, and they're most likely
simplex. I believe I heard a management team is en-route as well...

There's lots of call for immediate air support for structure protection, but
the lack of visbility is hindering the air support.

Around 12:30 a fire broke in the De Luz area of southern Riverside/northern
San Diego county that took resources from the Viejas Fire... They were
working on CDF Command 2/CDF Tac 1 and initially requested 5 closest strike
teams and 4 hand crews and aircraft. I'm not sure of the status on this
fire, but it's still active in the CHP CAD system.

I need more scanners ;)

That would have been around 9 this morning... They already had strike teams
en-route from Riverside (RRU) and the question came up whether they should
go direct to the fire or cover CDF stations. That's when the command center
advised what had been said by "Sacramento"...

The fire's been burning in and out of state-controlled and national forest
land (Cleveland National Forest) as far as I can tell.

Mike,
Do you know how early in the day Sacramento said that, and what
ranger units responded? I tuned in the morning quick calls for AEU
and TCU up here specifically to hear about any strike team callups
on my way to work, but didn't hear any mention of it.

I can't monitor indoors, but the CHP CAD has information on a fire burning
on Del Dios Highway near the lake. This is near where the La Costa fire from
a few years ago started (I lived a couple blocks from the closest burn
point). Any updates?

| I need some help because even the guys in the local radio chop who install
| CDF equipment in Redding can't seem to agree. Shasta County Fire operates
| on 154.430 simplex. They have several mountaintop sites and use different
| receive PL's. One of them is (for sure) 110.9 hz and that seems to cover
| about 2/3 of the county. The other PL is unknown to me and I need to know
| what it is. Any clues? One tech said it was 88. something and another
said
| 136. something I'm not sure either is correct.

Living in the mountains (south of Palomar Mtn) of San Diego County, wind
advisories are commonplace. Tonight, we are told to expect 35 mph winds with
gusts to 50 from the storm.

I lost a "cone" radial to the wind in the Temecula fire and I found another
about 500' from the antenna (antenna is mounted 10' above the roof top)
earlier in the New Year. It is a RS discone and has served me well in the 2
years that I've had it.

Although it's missing two radials (one right next to the other), I've
suffered no signal loss at all; still receiving LAFD & PD loud and clear,
some 150 miles away as the crow flies.

My question: what effect do the "cone" radials have on signals received? Are
the disc radials more important? At what point will I begin to experience
signal drop-off? What antenna should I be looking for as a replacement to the
RS discone?(!)

Many thanks for all responses!
