Thanks for joining SoCalFire! Here's a few rules to make everything run a
little smoother.

1. No whining.

I thought that I'd put this at the top of the list to remind all the newbies
and the oldbies that this list is not here for whining about other people and
their posts. If you have a problem with someone else on the list, send them a
message directly, or send a message to socalfire-owner@yahoogroups.com and
we'll take care of it.

2. Keep it on topic.

If the message has no fire-related content, keep it off the list. If you're
selling something, use the sale lists (there's at least a dozen fire/LMR
radio/ham radio sale lists on Y!G; use them.

3. No one-liners.

This goes for the "play-by-play" posters, and the one-line-question posters.
This is not a "play-by-play" list, that's SoCalFireNews. Please combine the
information that you've gathered into a larger post. If you're posting sooner
than every 15-30 minutes about a fire, you're posting too much.

Conversely, don't ask the endless stream of "what's the frequency" or "what
equipment" for fires. There's a usual set of frequencies used by the different
agencies, and you should have them programmed into your scanner, or on a sheet
close to it. The only exception to this rule is some of the air-air "Victor"
frequencies, which should be posted as soon as possible by whoever is covering
the fire. The rundown of equipment is done on the initial dispatch, which
someone should be writing down before posting to the list.

4. Trim your replies/Watch the subject line.

This is mainly for those people that recieve this list in digest form. At the
bottom of every message sent out by Y!G, there's an ad. GET RID OF IT!!!!! We
don't like to see them in the first place, why would we want to see them over
and over in replies?

When you're replying to someone, trim their quoted material, or clean it up as
to make what you're replying to more noticable. The digest readers don't need
to see 157 lines of quoting (including ads) for just a one line reply to a
message.

Digest readers: when you reply to a message in the digest, quote only what
you're replying to, and not the 2000+ lines of the digest. Make sure that you
change the subject of the message from "Digest ####" to the subject of the
section you're replying to. It helps keep everything on-thread.

5. Moderation

New members are automatically placed on moderation. This is mainly to stop the
spam that has become pervasive on the system. It's also so that we (the
moderators) know that you're okay, and not some kind of wierdo. You'll come off
moderation when we feel that it's okay to turn you loose to the list.

Old members may go back on moderation if they break the rules. Mainly this is
for breaking Rule #1 (no whining), for flaming another list member, or posting
something completely off-topic. If you've been placed on moderation, you'll be
taken off when the moderators think you can be trusted again.

6. Check the archives

If you've missed a post, or need information about a fire, check the archives,
which are available to all members. Whatever goes out to the list is archived,
so you should be able to do a little research to get the info you need before
asking the list.

7. Have fun!

This list is for getting the information about fires in SoCal out, so we all
know what's going on. The news media isn't very much help in getting the
specifics out, and you can listen to the incidents as they unfold.

If you have any questions, complaints, or suggestions, email them to socalfire-
owner@yahoogroups.com and we will try to get to them as soon as possible.

Ok, I noticed a few people asking for pictures, I cam across this link
below. Go to it then look at the 4 volumes that they have so far. Vol
3 and 4 have some good shoots of Tanker 21 and some P2's. For some
reason however once you are half way through them it will time out and
you have to start again, seems to be some sort of problem, anyways
it's better then nothing. Pictures are from both the Chatsworth fire
and Burbank fire, even have some shoots of the Super Poopers! :-)

That was a very informative answer much more than this "thing" is done one liner
Since I am in Nor/Cen Cal where it is in the ninety's and clear with humidity
in the high 30's.
I did not imagine that your weather was so cooperative down there where it is
usually hotter than here and the News people spit out Santa Anna winds every
other sentence!
Lets hope the good weather holds for a few days so this "thing" can get wrapped
up.
I have a lot of extended family down there (Burbank area) and was really
picturing another firestorm like the 2003 Cedar fire in my mind.

Bob, I'm not a rookie here. I've been on these fires for 30 years. The
weather says it's done. The winds stopped and started onshore. We have
cloud cover with humidity coming in now. Sure, there will be flare-ups
and the such but the forward progression of the fire has been stopped.
There was no further progression on the flanks either.
Don't know if you remember the Old fire from 2003 in the
firestorms. If you do, you'll remember right after the fire went
through Hook Creek near Arrowhead and took out 400 structures. Within 2
hours, we had fog and light rain. The weather stopped the fire.
Crews will be on this fire for a week or longer dousing hot spots,
digging out snags and so on and so on.........containment is a shakey
word. It means the fireline is tied in. Of course this line is not tied
in but the fire had stopped it's movement.
This doesn't mean an 80 MPH wind tomorrow wind send it flying.
Oh well, thats my opinion. Perhaps you should ask the Chief and see
what he thinks. hell, I never know what i'm talking about.

Anyone have any updates on this fire. No header showing from Big Bear this
morning, but reports were that last night flames raged up to 100 feet.

Getting information is sketchy at best and the live scanner as good as it
is, isn't really providing "details".

Thanks.

Craig

Mike,
This morning's NIFC report apparently does not reflect the weather/fire
situation either so thanks for the clarification.
Also shows nearly 24k acreage which I had not seen on any Fire/Scanlist.

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA AREA INCIDENTS / LARGE FIRES:

HARVARD, Burbank Fire Department.. This fire is located in Burbank, CA in
brush and grass. Voluntary evacuations are in progress. Electrical
transmission lines, communication facilities and a historical building are
threatened. High temperatures, low humidity and steep terrain are
hampering containment efforts.

THURMAN, San Bernardino National Forest. A Unified Command has been
established between a Type 2 Incident Management Team (Kerr), and San
Bernadino County agencies. A Type 1 Incident Management Team has been
ordered. This fire is five miles northeast of Redlands, CA in chaparral.
Mandatory evacuations are in place for surrounding communities. Cultural
archeological sites are threatened. Steep terrain, high temperatures, low
humidity and heavy fuels are contributing to plume dominated fire
conditions.

TOPANGA, Los Angeles County Fire Department. A Unified Command has been
established between a California Department of Forestry and Fire
Protection (CDF) Type 1 Incident Command Team (Heil) and other agencies.
This fire is located in Chatsworth, CA in chaparral. Residences,
watershed, electrical transmission lines, communication equipment and
wildlife habitats continue to be threatened. Road closures and evacuations
remain in place. Containment efforts continue to be hindered by steep,
inaccessible terrain, high winds, low humidity and unstable fire behavior.

Mark -

Fires are named by the Incident Command or the dispatch center of the
initial responding agency, not the media.

The official name of the fire is the Topanga Incident. The official
name of the fire in Burbank is the Harvard Incident.

But it's not the media's fault, fires are named by the incident commanders.

Okay, just talked to the various PIO's etc on this fire near Big Bear /
Angeles Oaks.

The fire has burnt 1200 acres and is 12% contained. Winds are calm, and
humidities are running 30% which is good.

Fire is barely moving this morning as a massive air assault and over 900
firefighters attempt to get a handle on this fire.

Mandatory Evacs for: Angeles Oaks, Mountain Home Village, Forest Falls, and
Barton Flats, Seven Oaks areas (and all campgrounds in that area).

This afternoon will be the make or break point as winds are predicted to
change out to out of the west and increase to up to 15mph.

Anyone else have any info, comments??????

It refers to the point of origin. The westbound 118 at Topanga Canyon Blvd
(approximately). See

CDF has released the accident investigation report on the death of Helitack crew
member Eva Shicke.
This is a large very comprehensive PDF file but well worth reading for
firefighters and Scanner buffs alike.
Very surprised to find out that if I had been trying to listening to the fire
ground communications with my scanner programmed with all of the CDF freqs I
would of not heard the communications of the CDF Helitack crew because they were
only using USFS Tac #2..
And communications both radio and face to face or lack there of were cited as a
causal factor in this tragedy.

Fires are named by the Incident Command or the dispatch center of the
initial responding agency, not the media.

The official name of the fire is the Topanga Incident. The official
name of the fire in Burbank is the Harvard Incident.

Topanga canyon runs from Highway 101 to the 118
Freeway in Chatsworth. The fire started along the 118
freeway just east of Topanga the first unit on scene
(battalion 14, LA City fd) called for a full alarrm
brush and named the incident the Topanga incident.
This was an LA City fire.

No problem. Just heard on the fire weather forecast
that another offshore event will start Monday evening
through Wed. Also the acreage is now 23,900 acres.

Ok, perhaps a bad choice of word (thing) but I'm sure
everyone know what I was referring to Bob. You have to
understand I just spent 20 hours on this "thing" fire
and I was a tad spent.
Down here when the Santa Ana is blowing, obviously
the fire is moving. When they do stop, you can always
tell by the smoke column. At this location the smoke
was heading in a south/west direction. It was very
obvious that when the smoke direction changed, it did
so dramatically from an offshore to an onshore and
covering the entire San Fernando Valley where 2 hours
earlier it had been clear as a bell. Down here a Santa
Ana wind is a north/east wind blowing to the
south/west. Sept, Oct and Nov are our Santa Ana wind
months (usually near the end of Oct) so this one was a
tad early as the one nect week will be.
And also bob, it's usually not that hot when the
Santa Ana'a blow (75 to 85) Sorry for the "thing"
thing...lol
