I dunno...plug it in. They have repeaters all around the state. If strike
teams are within range you might hear them. I'm not sure of its specific
usage, but I believe it's for communication WITHIN strike teams, or for
contacting a unit who's on the road. Anybody know for sure?

Scott:

That does not do me any good at all!! I use a Bearcat 235XLT!! It cannot
handle PL tones!! There is absolutely no way on this planet that I can afford to
buy a scanner that can handle tones!! My friend, Darryl Skivers, gave me this
scanner as a gift!! He knew that my two Realistic scanners (that are both 25
years old) have seen their better days and are ready to be retired.

It has to be the Hyampom fire. Shasta also has
another fire which they are containing about 50-60
acres. But they are putting together other strike
teams from local volunteers in Shasta and Tehama
ranger units.

The PL tone schedule is used for units to know where they can
bring up a repeater. Not for people listening to 169.125MHz.
(It's not a "tone guard", but simply what PL to use on the TX
side to bring up a repeater in that area of the state.)
It's just to show you how wide spread it's usage and coverage is.
And, as far as everything I've ever heard on it (169.125Rx 168.325Tx)
most of the coms are SIMPLEX and mainly strike teams trying to figure
out where the local DENNYS is at for feeding, or saying hi to buddies
from other ranger units that they haven't seen nor heard from since
last fire season. ;-)
I don't think I've ever actually heard
anyone go through one of the repeaters
(at least down here in RRU/BDU/MVU/BDF/CNF country.)

If you're that interested, plug in 169.125 in addition to the freqs
below. You're bound to hear somebody. ;-)

154.280 WHITE 1
154.265 WHITE 2
154.295 WHITE 3
154.160 OES FIRE 1
154.220 OES FIRE 2
156.075 CALCORD

And you might also want to listen to your local ranger units dispatch
freq and forest net freq. Most strike teams I've heard always flip
to the ranger unit or forest net they are traveling through and let
that dispatch center know that they are either entering and/or leaving
their area.
((Mostly done by CDF & USFS strike teams.))
Similar to how air resources "flight follow."

It's my opinion that most of TRAVEL NET's usage went out the door when
cellphone use became more widespread. Anyone who questions a
a traveling resources whereabouts can simply call that strike
team leader's cellphone.

FLOOD STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAN DIEGO CA

1115 AM PDT SUN SEP 2 2001

...FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES UNTIL 600 PM TODAY FOR THE SAN
BERNARDINO COUNTY MOUNTAINS...THE RIVERSIDE COUNTY MOUNTAINS...THE
SAN DIEGO COUNTY MOUNTAINS...THE APPLE AND YUCCA VALLEYS...THE
COACHELLA VALLEY...AND THE SAN DIEGO COUNTY DESERTS...

THIS FLASH FLOOD WATCH MEANS FLASH FLOODING IS POSSIBLE THIS
AFTERNOON OVER THE MOUNTAINS AND DESERT AREAS.

AT 1100 AM...NO THUNDERSTORMS HAD YET DEVELOPED OVER THE MOUNTAINS
AND DESERTS OF SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA...THOUGH THUNDERSTORMS WILL
LIKELY DEVELOP SOON AS CLOUDS WERE BUILDING. A MOIST AND UNSTABLE
TROPICAL AIRMASS OVER SOUTHWEST CALIFORNIA WILL MAKE THUNDERSTORMS
LIKELY THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING. CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
THESE THUNDERSTORMS TO BE SLOW MOVING AND CONTAIN HEAVY DOWNPOURS.
THIS COULD LEAD TO FLOODING ALONG STREAMS AND CREEKS IN THE
MOUNTAINS...AND ALONG WASHES IN THE FOOTHILLS AND DESERTS.

MOTORISTS TRAVELING THROUGH THE DESERTS AND MOUNTAINS ARE REMINDED
THAT MOST FLASH FLOOD DEATHS OCCUR IN AUTOMOBILES. DO NOT TRY TO
CROSS BRIDGES...DIPS...OR OTHER LOW SPOTS IF WATER COVERS THE
ROADWAY.

Things are VERY confused on the radios,
lots of lightning and rain, with nothing looking
serious now due to the rain.

The cells are still building south of Cuyamaca,
and north from Palomar well into San Berdoo.

I have listen to the LACOFD frequency, occasionally they would stay
automatic aid with (what ever city) now since that is coming out on a
LACOFD frequence
how does the other agency find out? does the LACOFD dispatcher call the
other dispatcher? or is the county dispatcher also dispatching the other
agency?

Whoever receives the call notifies the other agency. Automatic aid is for
pre-determined types of incidents in pre-determined areas.

If I'm the Long Beach FD dispatcher, for example, and get a structure fire
at a location near the north City Limits, my protocol may be to send two
engines and a truck and notify the county, who is to send one engine. You
could consider it to be "mutual aid" which is automatically in effect for
calls that meet the location/type criteria.

Clear as mud??

The dispatchers either have a "ring down" telephone line, call the other
center, have an audio intercom between the two locations (I believe
L.A. City and L.A. County still have their T-1 intercom between the two
centers, which also allows them to patch their radios systems together),
or use the OES Fire radio network to pass the information.
