Re: [Smartuners] Modifying and Older SG230 for Smartlock

depending on when built, the sgc 230's are different. mainly microprocessors. call sgc and give them the serial # and they will be able to tell you if it has the smart lock capability. i have gone thru mine a couple of times. you can't troubleshoot w/scope w/rf present. 73's john

Greetings:

Last week, I finally retrieved my SG 230 from the top of my tower after over a year of non-operation. It was installed as an all band antenna, tuning a 24.4 m (80 ft) chunk of wire. I replaced all the sensing diodes, and it seems to now be operable - I strung a bunch of alligator clips to make a 3.5 meter (12 foot) radiator and was able to get the "TUNE" LED to light up on all the bands at 10 watts drive. So the plan is now to mount the tuner near the bottom of my tower to tune a balanced fed dipole. The biggest challenge to this repair is that the current SG 230 schematic on the SCG site doesn't match mine. So some of the diodes replaced did not match the component identifiers that are often mentioned in other postings. I ended up pulling all the small signal diodes (9 of them) and replaced them with fresh 1N4148s. Anyways, another local may have the correct schematic and he is going to send it to me when he gets a chance and perhaps I will be able to upload it in the files section.

Anyways, I was wondering if anyone with an older 230 without the Smartlock function has tried to modify their's s0 that they can then lock the 230? I thought that its best functionality is in a mobile environment particularly on SSB, but I see in some older posts that it sometimes can be useful while fixed.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Jim, VE3XJ
