Subject: Byzantine Chant of Christmas in English

We've come across an unusual CD in English.

I will be placing an order on Monday.

If anyone would like a copy, email greg@...
by Monday morning and we will add it to our order.

Cost will be $14.99, postpaid.

I think if the group gets enough exposure for the
CD they will have a very successful recording.

Make Ready O Bethlehem

The Byzantine Chants of Christmas sung in English by
Anaphora.

The CD features the Chants of the Orthodox Church and
Eastern Catholic Rites celebrating the Feast of the
Nativity of Our Lord. These are not the standard Koledy,
Schedrivky and Carols of Ukraine, Russia, and Slovakia
but the sacred music chant of the Feast of the Nativity.

In the tradition of the Eastern Christiam Churches
all chants are sung a Capella.

Chants on the CD are:

Let Us Go Before All Nations - Tone 1

Behold the Time of Our Salvation Aproacheth - Tone 8

Make Ready O Bethlehem - Tone 4

Christ is Born - Tone 1

More Honorable - Tone 1

Magnify O My Soul - Tone 1

The Virgin Cometh Today - Tone 3

The Gospel of the Third Hour - Luke 2:1-20

Thy Nativity, O Christ Our God - Tone 4

From My Youth Up - Tone 4

From the Womb - Tone 4

Today All Creatures - Tone 2

9th Odes of Both Nativity Canons - Tone 1

Our Savior Hath Visited Us Today - Tone 3

Let Everything That Hath Breathe - Tone 4

Come Let Us Praise the Mother - Tone 4

When It Was Time - Tone 6

As Many As Have Been Baptized - Tone 1

The Shepherds Hastened - Tone 8

Today All the Angels - Tone 6

Make Ready O Bethlehem stands solidly within the
pattern of Traditional Byzantine Chant -- robust, tasteful,
uplifting, powerful, inspiring; including a variety of
choral and solo chanting with (sometimes layered) eson.

The Anaphora Byzantine singers are a group of young chanters
at St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Church in Omaha, Nebraska
(male and female), along with Rev. Father Michael Shanbour,
pastor of Ss. Peter and Paul Antiochian Orthodox Church in
Topeka, Kansas.

Hi! It's Church Slavic. Notice the "daz~d" for "give", which would be
"daj" nowadays.

Since it uses "h" for "g" (as in "dolhi" instead of "dolgi" = debts),
it's a Ukrainian or Rusyn rendition, as a Russian rendition would have
kept the original "g".

Is this an annual event? I'm down here in at the tip of Texas on the border
of Mexico. The house is up for sale. When it sells we are moving to the
Pittsburgh area. (Latrobe) I feel like a cat pacing the cage. Can't wait to get
out of here and start to enjoy all those festivals that you folks in PA and
Ohio go to. I assume the one at Pitt is on every year, correct?

Dear friends,

Does anyone know a good reference on Slavic mythology? I've found only a
few web sites about Slavic mythology, and most of them seem to have some
political axe to grind. Some related questions: How are the names of the
Slavic deities be spelled and pronounced in modern Slovak? Does anyone know
of any Slovak Christmas traditions that have their origins in Slavic
mythology?

After having been subscribed to this list for some time now, I know these
questions are unusual, and I hope I'm not out of line for asking them. It's
just that I don't know where else I could go to ask these questions.

For those who are wondering why I'm interested in this matter: I grew up
knowing that I was adopted, but I was told most of my life that I was part
Slovenian. Now, at 25, I've learned that I'm part Slovak--not Slovenian.
Needless to say, I'm very angry about this error. (Nothing against people
from Slovenia--I'd be just as angry if I'd been told I was Slovak when I was
really Slovenian. The point is that I was misinformed about what little I
know concerning my biological self, and this was no doubt due to typical US
ignorance about all things relating to Eastern Europe.) Anyway, I've
decided to turn this anger into something positive and find out everything I
can about being Slovak. I've decided to start with Slovak mythology and
language, since I've always been interested in religion and linguistics.

So, again, I'm looking for a book or some other kind of reference concerning
Slavic mythology, including traditions that survive in the modern
celebration of Christmas. Any help whatsoever will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Greg,
That is a real interesting plaque. I put "Lukavaho" into the google search
engine because i wanted to see what language said that for "Amen"
this prayer or information came back. also they spelled Chleb as chlib, same
as the plaque. can you read this??:

Výsledok: zvítazilo HZDS

V sobotu je velký sviatok – Nanebovstúpenie Panny Márie. Z miestneho
pravoslávneho kostola sa ozýva modlitba: ,,Otce naš, iže jesi na nebesich,
da
svjatitsja imja Tvoje. Da príjdet carstvíje Tvoje. Da budet vola tvoja, jako
na
nebesi, i na zemli. Chlib naš nasušcnyj dažd nam dnes. I odstavi nam dolhi
naše,
jakože i my ostavlajem dolžnikom našim. I ne vvedi nas vo iskušeníje, no
izbavi nas ot lukavaho...“

the other entry for lukavaho was regarding Greek Orthodox.

best wishes,
Noreen

The paperback version of "Slavic Mythology" is now
running 2 years late.

Hope they can get it published in the near future.

Slovak and Slavic publishing in America is a risky
business.

About the only "best seller" in the last few years was
"Year of the Frog" - a novel translated from the Slovak
original.

Greg,

Many thanks for the helpful response.

Regarding _Slavic Mythology_, I can't even find this title on the web. But if I
should find it, is it, in your opinion, worth the price of the hardcover
edition?

"Slovak and Slavic publishing in America is a risky business"? Is that because
there are few interested consumers in the US?

I've added _Year of the Frog_ to my wish list. Maybe someday soon . . .

Thanks again for the help.

Bill,

Thank you for replying, but I'm looking for more specific information.
Perhaps I wasn't clear in my last message, but as I tried to express, I know
how to search the Web--it's just that the information I've found so far
hasn't been very useful.

As I said, much of the information I've found seems to be written by someone
who has a political axe to grind. (For example, there are some sites that
include quite a few goddesses in the Slavic pantheon, but there are others
who exclude said goddesses and say that the pantheon was composed primarily
of male deities.) As far as the other sites I've found go, they don't
provide any information about how to separate the gold from the dross in the
study of Slavic mythology.

I've spent quite a bit of time informally studying the archeology of the
Middle East (specifically, Bible archeology), and I've learned the hard way
that it's best not to pick up one book and think it has all the answers.
This time around, I'd like to talk to someone more knoweledgeable than I and
find out the various disputes that relate to learning about Slavic mythology
and the principles each side uses to arrive at its conclusions. But so far
I haven't found much help in this regard.

Ever hopeful,
CF

Liechtenstein will sign EEA agreement
-------------------------------------
Liechtenstein has said it will sign the agreement on an expanded
European Economic Area despite its earlier refusal to do so because of
open disputes with the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Lichtenstein threw
a damper on hopes of creating a large area of free trade, finance and
travel in Europe, when it walked away from the agreement a few weeks
ago. Norway and Iceland also refused to sign in a show of solidarity.
The refusal came after the Czech Republic and Liechtenstein crossed
swords over sensitive SWW issues. Liechtenstein demanded that the Czech
Republic open the door to property claims by its citizens relating to
past confiscation of land and property - a demand that Prague refused
to comply with. Liechtenstein said on Wednesday that it did not want to
block progress on European integration and would sign the agreement,
along with Norway and Iceland. Its officials have stressed however that

Dear CF,

What about the website:

<A

om/prod.php?cat=slovak&id=5033</A>

you may want to try Bolchazy Books for Slovak topics. if what you seek is
not listed here, maybe they have a catalogue.

Hello,
It seems to me you're looking for an "obscure" enough topic (globally
speaking) that you'll need to head to a big public library, a research
library or a used book vendor. You might want to start by perusing the
online catlogs of US libraries at Harvard University, Stanford or New
York Public Library (the ones I'm most familiar with), just to see what
is available. Harvard has a second-to-none Slavic Studies program with
an incredible book collection. Both libraries contain international
collections and are multi-lingual. What languages can you read? I
think you will find most of the substantive material of these topic is
written in a non-English language.

A good link that ties together all the US-based collections is
http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst/research/soc/slav/slavs.htm#libraries

http://www.nyu.edu/library/bobst/research/soc/slav/

Then once you find books of interest, try looking at the large libraries
near you for these titles. The large libraries, including public,
private and university collections usually have an inter-library loan
program for researchers (consider yourself one.) You will need to call
upon the skills of your local library's reference librarian to make the
request. The reference librarian will need to make the request certify
that s/he has exhausted all local resources. The actual terms of loan
vary from library to library.

I would also suggest getting involved in certain research-based groups
(and posing your questions there) such as:
American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies
http://www.fas.harvard.edu/~aaass/
The Early Slavic Studies Association
http://clover.slavic.pitt.edu/~essa/

Good Luck,
Bill Tarkulich

Dear friends,

Does anyone know a good reference on Slavic mythology? I've found only
a few web sites about Slavic mythology, and most of them seem to have
some political axe to grind. Some related questions: How are the names
of the Slavic deities be spelled and pronounced in modern Slovak? Does
anyone know of any Slovak Christmas traditions that have their origins
in Slavic mythology?

After having been subscribed to this list for some time now, I know
these questions are unusual, and I hope I'm not out of line for asking
them. It's just that I don't know where else I could go to ask these
questions.

For those who are wondering why I'm interested in this matter: I grew up
knowing that I was adopted, but I was told most of my life that I was
part Slovenian. Now, at 25, I've learned that I'm part Slovak--not
Slovenian. Needless to say, I'm very angry about this error. (Nothing
against people from Slovenia--I'd be just as angry if I'd been told I
was Slovak when I was really Slovenian. The point is that I was
misinformed about what little I know concerning my biological self, and
this was no doubt due to typical US ignorance about all things relating
to Eastern Europe.) Anyway, I've decided to turn this anger into
something positive and find out everything I can about being Slovak.
I've decided to start with Slovak mythology and language, since I've
always been interested in religion and linguistics.

So, again, I'm looking for a book or some other kind of reference
concerning Slavic mythology, including traditions that survive in the
modern celebration of Christmas. Any help whatsoever will be greatly
appreciated.

Hello everyone,
Well it looks like our beloved land of our forefathers, is now becoming
more like America. I guess we call this...PROGRESS!
This is sad because my Slovak email buddy loves the land and loves planting
on it. Here is what is probably going to happen to the land he uses as a
garden.

But I could have some troubles because certain people have interest to take
substantial part of my garden. Behind this group is also mayor of our
village who would like to buy for a low price the soil and sell it for the
price 150 times larger to people who would like to build there apartment
house. This action could bring these people large profits. I hope I can
defend my garden. The private property is undetachable even according to
our Constitution

We all know, you can't stop progress, especially if someone is going to
make a lot of money on the project. I see this happening all over America.

I mentioned used booksellers. To elaborate:
A great consortium of used booksellers is found at www.abebooks.com
You will find a number of copies of "Year of the Frog" available.
Also, do a keyword search on "slavic" and "myth" you will find a number
of publications.
I have used this service at least a dozen vendors worldwide and have had
fantastic success and never a problem. Worth the wait and the price is
right.

Sometimes a wider search based on geographic, rather than ethnic
criteria can be more productive. "Hungary" "Austria" "Bohemia"
"Romania" and so on. While the books may not have as much focus,
sometimes you find the tidbits you are looking for buried in a few
pages. I just went through a similar search looking for info on Soviet
military operations in Slovakia in 1944. Looking for battles in
Slovakia in 1944 was of little fruit. Taking the search to a more
global level, for example, "Ukrainian Front", yielded better results.

Greg,

Many thanks for the helpful response.

Regarding _Slavic Mythology_, I can't even find this title on the web.
But if I should find it, is it, in your opinion, worth the price of the
hardcover edition?

"Slovak and Slavic publishing in America is a risky business"? Is that
because there are few interested consumers in the US?

I've added _Year of the Frog_ to my wish list. Maybe someday soon . . .

Thanks again for the help.

The paperback version of "Slavic Mythology" is now
   running 2 years late.

Hope they can get it published in the near future.

Slovak and Slavic publishing in America is a risky
   business.

About the only "best seller" in the last few years was
"Year of the Frog" - a novel translated from the Slovak
   original.

Hi: This morning I picked up my morning newspaper and saw where a doctor,
about 8 nurses, a pharmacist etc. were arrested for selling prescription
drugs. It seems the doctor gave out prescriptions to anyone and everyone.
He also gave them out big time to certain people who got addicted to them.
I don't see anymore advertisements on the email messages for prescription
drugs where you didn't need a prescription because they had one on the
premises. Just maybe, this is the outfit that I was getting all the spam to
buy prescription drugs. Any way it's nice not getting all that junk and all
the porno stuff.

Yes, Dave. If I responded to every spam message that promised to "increase
my length", and they worked...I'd be able to reel this thing out from here
to Los Angeles. Nothing like advancing technology and the result of same.

Which reminds me of the question, where the Russian official newspaper

Vlad,

we tell this story to show the difference between how scientists and
engineers apply science and theory:

First place a scientist and an engineer side by side in a room, and
attractive people of the opposite sex at the other side of the room. Then
you allow them to cross half the distance and stop, and again half the
remaining distance and stop. Continue this routine ... and the scientist
will give up in frustration since he knows he will never reach the
beautiful lady on the other side of the room, because mathmatically there
will always be some remaining distance between him and the lady.

At the same time the engineer will happily proceed no matter how big the
room is to start. She knows that while the distance will never be zero, it
will become small enough for all practical purposes.

And I was wondering why I sometimes, when applying scientifical methods of

Paul, Before opening any new mail, I went to "Special," and emptied the
trash. When I opened the new mail, I went back to "Special," and there were
three messages to trash. So my filter must be working overtime. I put so
many words in it that I know I'm missing some good legitimate mail. I had
to also filter, "Hi," from any messages with, 'Hi," in the subject matter.
To many gals, with sex in mind, were using these two letters in the subject
matter. So, if any of my friends can't think of something better then "Hi,"
then its garbage-can-heaven for the messages.
At this point, I'm one step ahead of the porno queens, but probably not for
long.
