Goes in hand in hand. Less people attending, especially young people. Fewer
candidates for the priesthood. In Western PA we've seen Masses decreased
continually over the years. Where there used to be Churches with 4 to 5 Masses,
now they have one to two, and those are far from having pews filled.

Hi,

I just received this. I followed the instructions and sure
enough....there I was, big as life with personal info, even though with Facebook
I have everything set to private. Yes, even my address was listed for anyone to
see. But I was listed as a man so it's not completely accurate.

I walked through the steps and it worked. I'm contacting my family
members and friends, as well as groups that I belong to. I have nieces, and
yes, I found them. I'm sending this so others can protect themselves & I'm
passing this to toehrs I know.

You will receive an email in your mailbox. Click to confirm the removal

If you have more than one facebook account, you will have to check that

We went 3 years ago and had a private driver take us to the villages of
Papradno and Hvozdnica in the Bytca region. We found names in the white
pages from over there of people with the same last name as my grandmother's
maiden name - we weren't able to find my grandfather's because we were not sure
of the correct original spelling - but after going to the cemetery we knew
what the correct spelling was. Milan our driver spoke fluent English and
was tremendous as an interpreter. We had such an amazing experience meeting
family. A lot of slivovich. We would love to go over again next summer
but are not sure what is the best tour group to hook up with. Our first
trip we just had this man recommended, he has 5 children now and just
doesn't have the time any more to do this type of thing. His wife has been
ill
as well. Any one have good suggestions about a good tour group?

Vilo,
You were lucky. In my home town they closed all three churches and
substituted nothing. People there now have to go several miles in either of 2
ways to get to mass. The situation is getting worse and worse all over. I
am now in NYC and we get packed churches on Christmas and Easter and not too
many attending the other weekends.

Marycay,
This is now a hopeless case. Spokeo is just one of MANY aggregators of
individual information (both correct and incorrect) that are available on the
internet. Most of them have no way for you to remove the aggregated information.
All they do is pull together information that is already available publicly on
the internet anyway. So anyone who is really looking can find it easily anyway.
Just for starters, google you own name and you will just see a tiny portion of
what it out there. Your name, address, telephone number, age, and other
household members are listed in many internet telephone directories. All
government records now online (such as real estate holdings) are publicly
available, so anyone who owns property under their own name is listed in any of
the real estate aggregators with estimated value of your property. Much money
donated to presidential and other political candidates also becomes public
record and is often aggregated. Criminal records, often including traffic and
speeding tickets are aggregated by most states and can easily be found. Welcome
to the 21st century.

Curt,

Unfortunately I think you're right. A friend and I discussed this and came to a
similar conclusion, and we don't think there is a heck of a lot we can do about
it. Unless we're going to hide under a rock, this is what we can expect.

You can put out fake birth dates and other other information when you sign on to
social contact sites. It helped when a collection agency called and started to
dun me to pay a debt that was not mine. The first call they nearly had my name
correct, but the birth date was clearly gleaned from the internet. Of course
when you are conducting legitimate business you have to provide accurate
information. For the internet, perhaps choose a birth date for your sibling so
it will be easy to recognize.

By chance this site has an old telephone number recorded for me, and I am
perfectly content to leave it that way!

Hi All - Can anyone help with the following request I received...

I am searching for a recipe for a drink that my Grandfather made for Christmas
Eve.  My Father, who is 93 years old, and I have talked about it during the
course of the last few years.  I would love to surprise him and make it for
him.  I remember my Grandfather letting us sip it when we were children.  It was
a sweet drink.  I have an old copy of the Jednota Newspaper from 1987 that
mentions it in an article about Slovak Christmas Eve traditions.  The drink is
called Jeziskove.  "The father then offers his greetings and toasts everyone
with Jeziskove, the name given a special Slovak Christmas drink made with
whiskey and spices.  Depending on what was available they would sometimes use
whiskey or wine."  My Father thinks the drink contained cinnamon, cloves, and
definitely honey.  Whatever other spices were used he can't recall.  I know
after you heated all the spices and other ingredients you added the whiskey to
it.  It was probably some type of mulled drink.  Have you ever heard of it?  If
so, do you know the ingredients and the recipe?  If not, do you have any idea
where I might continue my search.  The older my Father gets the more we talk
about the foods his Mother and my Mother used to make and I am trying to make
him these foods.  I would love for him to sip on Jesikove this year.

Hope we can help her

Helene,

I don't know the Slovak recipe but what you are describing is the same drink
as the German Wassail. Check out the URL:

Helene,

Here's a recipe from my "Recipes from Baba's Kitchen and Ours", compiled by the
Framily and Friends of St. John's Orthodox Church in Phipsburg, PA.

It's called Boilo (Lithuanian Traditional Holiday Drink), but it seems to fill
most of the request.

Make a cloth bag and put in:

1 heaping Tbsp. caraway seeds
4 cinnamon sticks
2 allspice
1 bay leaf
ruties (optional)

Put spice bag in bottom of coffe pot (10-12 cup size).  Add:

1 c. ginger ale
rind of 1 orange
1 qt. 100 proof whiskey
1 c. honey

Bring to a simmer (simmer, do not boil) and serve hot.

I have no idea what ruties are, and couldn't find them via Google; being
optional, I wouldn't think they're a major factor.  This recipe could easily be
halved, too.

We always have pork and sauerkraut on New Year's Day. My
Slovak/Croatian/Italian family had it when I was growing up, my husband's German
family had it when he was growing up, and we keep up the tradition. Don't know
much else about it except that it is supposed to bring good luck.

i was told that pork is eaten on new years day because when a pig eats, it moves
forward across the ground to new grass etc.

but then i was ALSO told that if a pregnant woman saw something that scared
her, the baby would have a birthmark that resembled whatever it was!  and
tickling a baby will make it stutter.

Special thanks to Frank Plichta and Sue "Zuza" Groh who so kindly responded to
my request for the Christmas Drink - this is the reply I received from the
person who requested it for her 93 year old father and I wanted to share it

"Thank you for this recipe.  I want to thank you especially for taking the time
and effort to help me in my search.  I am overwhelmed by yours and everyone

I thought this was sooo nice!

Happy New Year!

When I was in college, the monks blessed the various classrooms using 19
C + M + B 50 in chalk over the doors of the classrooms. This stood
for the century, Caspar and Melchior and Balthazar, and the year. This
year the blessing would be 20, C + M +B, 11. We students irreverently
said that this stood for 20 Cases of Monastery Beer, $11.

When our Slovak church was in existence, the pastor would visit the
families and bless each house. Since we no longer have a Slovak
church, chalk is blessed and given to the family with the blessing to be
said by the family.

Hi Vladimir,

Thank you so much for sharing the photos and your mother's
hand-written recipe for Christmas Sauerkraut Soup.

I grew up in a household where pork and sauerkraut were
enjoyed, but usually as pork chops and mashed potatoes, and
it had nothing to do with Slovak traditions or culture, as
the family cultures were German and Cornish. I was adopted
at the age of three months, and knew nothing of my
biological heritage on my father's side, and little of my
mother's side. I happily enjoyed the culture of my adoptive
family, and the love of my parents.

In 2006 I was blessed to locate my birth mother after
considerable research, and a separation of 63 years. We have
been close ever since, and one of the blessings I received
from her is the name of my birth father, which was Michael
Alois Severnak. I've been a genealogist for several decades,
and was able to trace my Grandfather's place of birth to
Nizny Hrusov, in the Presov Region of Slovakia. In the
process of these discoveries I have met a sister, and two
brothers I never knew I had, as well as the widow of yet a
third brother who passed away in 1993.

Research continues, and I am catching up, but still very
ignorant of the Slovak culture. Would it be possible for you
to publish your mother's recipe for Christmas Sauerkraut
Soup, in English?

Thanks for opening yet another door to my Slovak heritage.

All the best,

John Zimmerman

Ron,

ŠÅ¥astný nový rok is an idiom, and Slovaks use it as a

Central Europe’s Past and Present Are Subject of Book Talk by Author Anna Porter

Nearly 40 million people perished during World War II, particularly in the
nations of Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary, which endured not
only Nazi rule but subsequent conquest by the Red Army. In 1989, the Berlin Wall
was dismantled and communism gave way to democracy. Since that time the former
borderlands of the long-defunct Hapsburg Empire and the more recently dispersed
Soviet Empire have been trying to invent their own versions of democracy and
market-driven economics.

In her new book _The Ghosts of Europe: Central Europe’s Troubled Past and
Uncertain Future_, author Anna Porter recounts her 2006 visit to these four
nations, where she explored the consequences of democracy in the former Hapsburg
lands.

Porter will discuss the book at the Library of Congress at noon on Thursday,
January 20, in the European Division Conference Room, located in Room 250 of the
Thomas Jefferson Building at 10 First Street S.E., Washington, D.C. The event,
which is sponsored by the European Division, is free and open to the public.
Tickets are not required.

During her journey throughout Central Europe, Porter spoke with leading
intellectuals, politicians and former dissidents such as Václav Havel, Adam
Michnik and George Konrád. She interviewed the new guard, among them Radek
Sikorski and Ferenc Gyurcsány, and spoke with the younger generation, many of
whom have little or no experience with communism and no interest in its
aftermath.

Porter spent her early childhood in Hungary. Her family fled after the 1956
revolution, and she lived in New Zealand before moving to Canada in 1969. The
founder and publisher of Key Porter Books, Porter is the author of three crime
novels and an acclaimed memoir, _The Storyteller_. Her recent book, _Kasztner’s
Train_, won the Canadian Jewish Book Award and the Nereus Writers’ Trust
Non-Fiction Prize. Since 2007, she has been writing about Central Europe for
_Maclean’s_ and the _Globe and Mail_. She is currently the writer-in-residence
at the University of Toronto’s Centre for European, Russian, Eurasian Studies
(CERES). She lives in Toronto.

Founded in 1800, the Library of Congress is the nation’s oldest federal cultural
institution. The Library seeks to spark imagination and creativity and to
further human understanding and wisdom by providing access to knowledge through
its magnificent collections, programs and exhibitions. Many of the Library’s
rich resources can be accessed through its website at www.loc.gov and via
