Bill, I use godaddy.com for slovakcooking.com and I pay either 3.99 or 4.99 a
month (I forgot). I think that's quite affordable, especially since the ads I
show on the site end up covering this expense. I've been using godaddy for a
while and never had any issues with them.

Recently AT&T stopped hosting web pages so my genealogy page went off the air.
Am looking for a replacement host. My requirements are no ads and either free
or low cost per month. With AT&T I think it was 5 or 6 bucks a month. I am
looking at Tribal Pages and Tripod. Any other recommendations? Thanks Bill

Ahoj Rick,

I occasionally buy Bulgarian Bryndza in Albany, NY, the only local source.  I
tried the Ukrainia but the Bulgarian was better.  I found it to be a bit milder
than that In Slovakia but really liked it.  I was VERY expensive, (as I
remember, $10.50 per pound) and I don't buy it any more.

Enjoy,!

       Hi Everyone,

I had just moved to another city to attend a school. Trying to better my
chances of finding work after being unemployed for over a year. Well anyways...
I went into a Produce shop here in Clearwater Fl. They had Sheep Cheese from
Bulgaria. For those that are experts ;) I am not sure if it is close to Svk or
not because I have only had it once when I was in Slovakia in 2005. The store is
located at the corner of Belcher and Nursery St's in Clearwater.

Ahoj Vilo,
If I remember right it was like $7.50 a pound in brine. This produce market had
foods from all over eastern Europe.. it was quite a surprise. Going to have to
find a recipe for Brzynda halusky and make it for my roommate and myself
sometime. LOL

Maxine,
It is the Cmorej/Smorey Genealogy Web Page but it is no longer available since
AT&T quit hosting web sites on April 15th. I should have it back up on another
hosting site in the near future. I'll let you know.
I also lost my high school reunion web page. Arghhhh.

Always keep a local copy of your internet web site information.

Keep back-ups of important information.

Congratulations Humble Dave! But I don't see that on half.com. I get listings
from $3.00 to $16.02.

EBay has 9 copies ranging from $3 to $21.10.

An online bookstore search found 32 copies from $3 to $36.90.

Did the expensive one sell maybe? Was it gold plated?

"The Harvest"

Plucking grain stalks by hand is one of the oldest harvesting techniques. It
was used in Slovakia as late as the beginning of the 20th century, as an
emergency technique used only in years that saw catastrophic crop failures. It
was used to save as much of the straw as possible and to keep grain losses to a
minimum.

Another archaic way of harvesting grain crops, still in use in Slovakia in the
20th century, is mowing. For this, a sickle with a serrated blade was used. In
the 18th century, factories started producing scythes, and a new harvesting tool
spread in the Slovak countryside: a sickle with a smooth blade <
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/9c/Sickle_(PSF).png >, which was
probably a cultural import from Austria. Sickles with different blades were
used in different ways. When working with a serrated-blade sickle, the grain
was held tightly in the left hand and was cut with an even motion. In this way,
losses from dropped grains were minimized. When working with a smooth-blade
sickle, the grain was just turned away[?] by the left hand, and stalks were cut
off with a swish. This was faster, but there was more loss due to dropped
grains.

Mowing survived in Slovakia for a long time, mainly due to socio-economic
reasons: abundant supplies of cheap labor, small pieces of agricultural land,
the departure of men for work outside the village, mowing being easier for women
than scything, and, not least, lower levels of grain loss. Sickles with either
serrated or smooth blades also worked better than scythes to harvest grain in
mountainous areas where the soil was full of stones and roots, and in fields
that were not flat, and often steep.

Slovak parliamentary elections start this weekend. Just few days ago, a
recording surfaced which seems to indicate that Fico's Smer party obtained
several million crowns illegally sometimes back in 2002. So far no mention of
this in English-language media, but Slovak newspapers are full of this scandal.
Stay tuned, this will get interesting!

During a press conference, Fico wished his opponents a "pleasant sexual
experience" while listening to the tape. Not exactly a man of (diplomatic)
words.

The tape was first made public by SME.sk, a rather anti-Fico newspaper. Fico is
currently suing the newspaper, even though the recording had been circulating
through email way before being released by SME.

While Smer still has a lead in the pre-election polls, it appears it will not
longer obtain enough votes to control majority.

Greg,
Thanks. Fortunately I have kept copies of my web pages both on CD and on my
back up hard drive. I used Frontpage to make the site but I may have to
redesign it completely. It probably should be updated anyway. Right now I am
looking at Tribal Pages and also at Lubo Brieda's suggestion of GoDaddy. Both
look good although it looks like GoDaddy is geared more toward small business
operations. Tribal Pages is focused on Genealogy. I want to put the site up in
both English and Slovak if I can and I am waiting for an answer from TPages.
They are slow to answer. Maybe that is a clue to how they will be in the
future!

We deleted the thread today.

I've seen this scam several times on the news
over the past couple weeks.

You post a message on your Facebook wall that
you are going on a trip.

A couple days later someone hacks your account
and posts that you lost your wallet and need
money to get home.

All your FaceBook friends get the message.

Some people on FaceBook have hundreds of friends.

Many will try to help.

Agrarian-ethnological documentation from neighboring areas shows that this
harvesting method was also used more widely in Central Europe and the Balkans.
Since the 18th century, when the smooth sickle appeared, harvesting methods
started to vary by region. In western Europe, the smooth sickle began to
replace the serrated sickle in the middle of the 19th century, and was
considered the typical tool of northern and western Europe. In the south, the
smooth sickle was used only in the Croatian area. Slavs typically used serrated
sickles.

Smooth sickles appeared in the Slavic areas as a result of advanced
manufacturing techniques, and later, industrial production. Evidence of this
comes from Austria and Moravia. The smooth sickle probably found its way
farther east via this area and western and southwestern Slovakia. Historical
Hungarian agrarian literature defines the smooth sickle as a tool of Upper
Hungary [i.e. Slovakia] that was used mainly for cutting grass, and only
sometimes for harvesting grain. Smooth sickles probably spread to Hungarian
territory from the north and west, thanks to advanced production of iron tools
in Slovakia and Austria.

The scythe < http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b1/Scythe_user.png
> spread throughout the central area of the Carpathian Basin in the 18th
century. However, its complete adoption was a long and complicated process that
was completed as late as in the first decades of the 10th century.

There were other reasons for the slow adoption of the scythe, the most important
being its high price and low quality. Scythes used to break or crack during
work, causing great losses. *Great resistance to using a scythe was caused by
the deep-rooted tradition of women harvesting with a sickle (either smooth or
serrated ) and men binding and storing the harvested grain, which was considered
harder work. It was probably for this reason that scythes were initially used
in Slovakia to harvest spring grains, which were mowed like grass, i.e., in
rows, with the women turning over the drying grain with a rake.

_______________
* I hope I got this right. The original sentence reads: "A large moment of
retardation was represented by a deep-rooted organization of harvesting with a
sickle (with either a smooth or serrated blade), where women harvested and men
bound the harvested grain and put it away for storage, which was considered to
be harder work."

Tomas Kopecky lives in Nova Dubnica, but was born in Ilava. Marian Hossa
lives in Stara Lubovna. According to Stanley Cup tradition, each member of
the winning team gets to take the trophy to his home for a visit--so it
will be going to Slovakia for two trips.

Both Tomas Kopecky and Marian Hossa were forwards on Slovakia's Olympic
team. Marcel Hossa (Dinamo Riga--KHL) was also a forward on this team, and I
wonder whether he is related to Marian Hossa. In all, there were a total
ten American and Canadian professional hockey players on the roster for
Slovakia.

It's an exciting time to be in Chicago.

It was ABSOLUTELY N-U-T-Z downtown yesterday -- yes, two players are from

Oftentimes I come across a death record that shows what a person died from, but
it is always in Slovak. Most of the time it is difficult to decipher the
spelling so I can't look the words up in a dictionary. It seems to me I saw a
list of this type, but I cannot remember where. If anyone knows of a list or
someplace to find this info, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks.

Would someone be able to send me the LDS Family History Site for reading
microfilms online.

I got a new computer and when my favorites were transferred, somehow this
website got lost.

Thank You

Did you mean to say Hungarian? All the old records I've looked at are a
combination of archaic Hungarian and Latin.

http://www.antiquusmorbus.com/International/Hungarian.htm

Look to the left side of the page and you can select from other languages as
well. Notably Latin.

A video was made of the presentation -- once it is edited, it will be made
available for purchase.

John's presentation was amazing.

You can read microfilms on line? I don't think you can do that but you can
access a lot of information on line. Just go to LDS site and click on "Family
History"

I don't wanna come across as a "self-promoter", but I wanted to share with you
the latest addition to slovakcooking.com. It is for a cake called bublanina,
which is this fluffy/bubbly coffee cake filled with fruit. This cake is really
popular in both Slovakia and the Czech Republic.

http://www.slovakcooking.com/2010/recipes/bubbly-cake-bublanina/

Also, I noticed that many folks associate the word "kolach" with a particular
type of a baked good - usually with the poppy seed roll. Kolach really means
just "cake". So this is also a "kolach" (really spelled with c with hacek, of
course).

Enjoy! Bublanina is really delicious and super easy to make.

OK, I think it'll be available through C-RS, but will keep an eye open and make
an announcement when I see it.

Quick Start
Here is a quick outline on how to access and view the records. The FHL site is
clean, simple and intuitive to operate. If you have been holding back on the
purchase of a large-screen monitor, this may be the excuse you need.
1. Begin at the FHL Pilot Site
2. Select "Browse our record collections"
3. Select "Europe" from the drop-down, or click on the map.
4. Scroll to the very bottom
5. Select the country of interest:

• "Slovakia, Presov Region Church Books" - you have two choices – working with
the old Magyar ("Hungarian) names, or with the present-day Slovakia records.
Either one takes you to the same set of records. If you are unsure of the name,
try them both.
• Czech Republic - Select the archive or region of interest.
6. View and Select the Religion
7. View and Select the Village
8. View and select the type of records of interest (marriages, baptisms, or
deaths)
9. An Adobe Flash rendering of the scanned pages will start. You've arrived!
10. Navigate pages with the "Image" number or left/right arrow navigation.
