Sounds like some sort of torte, like a Dobosch Torte, but I am not familiar with
anything like this coming from my grandma's kitchen....

Subject: [Slovak-World] Cake Recipe?

Hello,

Does anyone know of a Slovak forty (40) layer Christmas Cake?

Someone ask my husband if he had a recipe. He is not familiar with the cake. I
tried doing a search but came up empty.

We have the Slovak-American Cook Book, I didn't find it in there.

Thank you for your thoughts.

Debbie

Intrigued -- I Googled this topic, and discovered a recipe for a 14 layer cake,
that refers to a Martha Stewart recipe for a 40-layer crepe cake. Since Martha
Stewart comes from a Polish family, I suspect this the cake you are looking for
-- and there are references in the 14-layer cake post to a Dobosch Torte.
Here's the link:
http://bakerella.blogspot.com/2009/02/fourteen-for-fourteenth.html?commentPage=2\
-- somewhere in the posts, Martha's cake is mentioned.

Couldn't find the cake in Bakerella web-site...
...so, I googled the whole phrase" Martha Stewart recipe for 40 layer cake"

A very complete recipe with blog commentary, and best of all,
lots of photos of the process and finished product. YUMMY!!!

Happy Baking!

Váz~ený Pane Dochtor Q,

since I was brought up in an Irish neborhood and schooled in St. Patrick's, I am
a singer of many Irish tunes. Maybe we could sneak out with some of the non
Slovaks and sing a few.

I can still remember Martin Duffy on the street and his greeting "yahk sea tea
dohbry", with a pure brogue.

No one sings anymore. Thank God for our Sunday mass, the only place I sing,
(except when I am alone at home and take time out from talking to myself). :0)
:0) :0)

The chorus my wife sings in wanted me to play at their spring show, but the
fujara just didn't have enough umph on an unamplified stage, so I played my
Irish whistle - Amazing Grace, Irish Washwoman, and Danny Boy. I even got some
applause!

I still go out in the evening and serenade the neighborhood and the local
critters with my fujara (no more extreme fujara since the temperature has been
above 40 F for quite a while). I play for a about 5-10 minutes; Little Shining
Star is a regular along with Hrmelo Pres^alo, then it's anything else - Pomaly
Ovec^ky, We Three Kings of Orient Are, Morning Has Broken, Old Folks at Home, or
anything I can find in the key of G or E minor, or I can transpose.

Followed by a shot of vodka or slivovitz and a little pivo.

I haven't a clue what the penguins will do, hopefully win, but their performance
this last game was ridiculous.

Try another Yahoo group that exchanges & discusses Eastern European recipes.
It says Carpatho-Rusyn, but they always talk about food
from that whole area of the world.

Here is the link:

Good luck!

Dear Vilko,

I don't sing, but I will play what I know. It should be enjoyable. I did
graduate from Notre Dame - of course the correct name is Notre Dame du Lac and
it is clearly a French name. Anyone know why they are called the "Fighting
Irish"? (hint Civil War Chaplain)

At the end of July I will participate in a 60 mile walk over the course of 3
days to raise money for breast cancer research. (Yes, that's 60 miles. :) ) I
am walking to support some women I know who are undergoing treatment for this
disease and because each year roughly 200,000 American women are diagnosed with
breast cancer and nearly 40,000 die from it. We need a cure.

In order to participate I am required to raise at least $2300 in donations, so I
need your help. Please consider making a donation by going to
http://www.the3day.org/ , clicking on donate, and then typing my name in the
search box. If you prefer not to donate on-line, there is a donation form at
the bottom of the page which can be printed out and mailed in, or you can donate
by phone at 800-996-3329.

Also, whether or not you are able to donate, I can use your prayers that I will
complete the walk without injury or incident and that the weather will be fair
and not too hot over the 3 days.

Thanks,

Couldn't find the cake in Bakerella web-site...
...so, I googled the whole phrase" Martha Stewart recipe for 40 layer cake"

A very complete recipe with blog commentary, and best of all,
lots of photos of the process and finished product. YUMMY!!!

Happy Baking!

I was just thinking of Helene, and listening to an LP that I recently purchased-
and then a very familiar fujara piece, and yet unfamiliar style of play, came
on. It sounded like someone with the same background of Jozef Rybar- but yet
not HIM. So I looked on the huge insert (actually it is a book that came with
the box set), and it was MIKULAS RYBAR! I am going to get this digital, and send
it to you, Helene... I can't believe I have been sitting on a recording of him,
and never realized it.

It's farmer's market season again and I bought some Kholrabi this morning for
lunch -- and ate it Skeeter's favorite way today -- peeled, sliced and salted,
YUM!

Also I'm still planning a short row of Kholrabi in my garden in his memory.

It made me think of him.

40 years ago today I sat on a bus and went through the border to Austria,
knowing I will never ever be able to return. That was the choice I made, as I
wanted to be free.
Now Slovakia is FREE, there are no borders of iron curtain to cross and it is
great and I am happy to be here on my anniversary, my 49th trip since 1987.

Last week I did the Inauguration of the President of the Slovak Republic Mr.
Ivan Gasparovic, and I also guided 10 Americans to their ancestral villages for
four days and today I will go to see AMADEUS in the old building of the Slovak
National Theater.
Pictures will be soon at www.lindervideo.com

Vladimir, it is great that Slovakia is now free. My father left twice

Who knows how many people in Europe suffered this dislocation in

I grew up in Youngstown, Ohio.

Whenever Mom went downtown she stopped at Strouss Department
Store to get a Layered Cake.

The cake was 1/8 inch of cake topped with frosting and layered.

If memory serves me correctly, there were seven layers of cake
and frosting.

If you had a cake you remember 40 years after eating it it must be
great.

Let us know.

My daughter came up with a great gift for me.

She found a little meat market in Illinois, just 60
miles from St. Louis, that makes a great kielbasa.

My Father's Day present was a large link of chunky sausage

The market was started in 1922 and is still running strong
by a fourth generation family member.

They got the grand championship for Cured Meat Processors
for their Kielbasa.

GREG,

I have roots from Yougstown Ohio and and remember when there was a
Strous's and Mc Kelvey's.

Are you speaking of th multi layer TORT cake? My mother use to have
that recipe but over the years it was lost. Hopefully, someone will post
that original cake recipe.

I have an idea for you cake.

Try this: make 10 simple sponge cakes slice each into 4 layers each fill with
Nutella (or a mix of Nutella and Buttercream) ice, garnish and serve?

That would be the best route since there is no recipe.

I am so frustrated with Pennsylvania and in particular the states
requirements in obtaining any records for genealogy research.

Not only do you need to show relationship (which you are trying to
establish) you also need to provide the dates in which you are seeking!

Any insight into this from the group would be great!

because you do need all the info you listed. Since you are no where close to
Pa., maybe someone in the group knows someone in the McKeesport area that does
some research. Just a thought!!

What are you looking for in McKeesport? My dad's father was from there and I
still have one cousin who lives there.

Joann

I am so frustrated with Pennsylvania and in particular the states
requirements in obtaining any records for genealogy research.

Not only do you need to show relationship (which you are trying to
establish) you also need to provide the dates in which you are seeking!

Any insight into this from the group would be great!

   Thanks,

   Dennis

Hey Joann,

I am trying to help Bozena find the daughter of Michael Tokar. Her name
was Mary (Naturally)

She was born Oct.15,1909 in Mckeesport. She is last listed in the 1920
census. No body knows if she married.

Her father was Michael bornSept.19 1884 in Tot-Jesztreb /Jastrabie nad
Toplou today.

I found her brother John born Jul 30 1911 and his wife Anita. They lived
in North Versailles.

I also found her sister Hellen born Mar 18 1919. She married Stephen
Matik and lived also in North Versailles.

The last listing for any of them is in the 1946 Mckeesport Directory.

I have tried a few area churches with no luck........

Any help would be appreciated.

Bozena has been a goldmine of information and has helped us both with
translations.

Dennis

Vladimir, it is great that Slovakia is now free. My father left twice

once before the Germans invaded and again in 1948 when the communists

took over. He never returned and he always missed his family, language and music

Who knows how many people in Europe suffered this dislocation in

order to have a better life for themselves and their immediate family.
