Where else would the 2006 World Hip Hop Champions come from than
Kosice, east Slovakia? The annual competition was in Bremen, Germany.
Among the over 3,000 contestants in close to 10 categories in 4 age
groups were almost 60 from Slovakia. Gabriela Nemcova and Pamela
Peticka, both 11, from the Speedy dance club in Kosice won the
children's duos category.

This message requesting help is being sent to two lists. I recieved in the mail
3 cd's from a relative's wedding in Slovakia. I insert the disc and I have 3
choices...
       1) Play DVD Video using real player
       2) Play DVD Movie using InterVideo Win DVD
       3) Play DVD Video
            using Windows Media Player.

I have a Gateway Computer using Windows XP. I can get the real player thing
to come up but on one I only get the sound of music (seems to be American songs)
but no pictures/videoes etc. Can anyone help me? It must have been real
expensive for them to have these discs made and to mail them to me....I sure
would like to view them and report back to them. If I don't reply in a week or
so...I think they will begin to worry that I didn't get them. They don't speak
Eng. and I don't speak Slovak!
Your help with matter would be greatly appreciated
      Diane

Well it's because they sent you the video in their system PAL and we
have NTSC incompatible with PAL. But your DVD if it is latest should
be able to read it.

THey have to send you the DVD in NTSC system and you will have NO
PROBLEMO.

If you live reasonably close to a military base, call them and see
if you can get together with someone who has a "multi-standard"
player and television. They sell them overseas to the miltary but
the are forbidden for retail sale in the US.

Now the military is a big octopus of an organization, so if you can
find telephone lsitings for the base call a bunch of differnt
places. I would guess your chanses of success arebased 40% on
finding the right place and 60% on finding the right person (in the
right place or the wrong place). USO is another option. Use your
imagination, & even try retirees!

Dear Friends,
Thank you very much. I am glad I served you well and with many of you it was fun
too.
Since then, many things have changed here;
- prices are skyrocketing
- access to sources is obstructed as never before
- privacy law is being observed
- people hesitate to talk to strangers, be it on the phone or at their gates
- interest to find and meet relatives is declining
- spreading of internet created an illusion that everything can be found there
So, one has to watch for early signs of such changes and adapt. I am glad we've
made it so far and am looking forward for more successful years and clients to
come.
An occupation as mine is not just an occupation. It's a state of mind. This
means constant mental occupation with the matter, no limit in working hours or
days, sometimes no holidays...but it is rewarding. Not as much in financial
terms as one would think, but in satisfaction after a good work has been
done.This is then self-motivating.
And your feedbacks are motivating too.
Thank you!
Vladimir

would you remind us please what the privacy laws are? I seem to recall
that records (or some records) are not available later than a certain date

you say that this is a change. What is the reason behind the change, do
you know? Are people becoming less friendly, or more private, or are they

1. After some archives received films from the Mormons and readers, their
capacity was reduced from 5 or more per day to two per day, so waiting times are
almost two months, which is ridiculous. Brno has capacity of about 25
researchers at a time.
Slovak archives like this situation, because they have less to work.
The archive of Bratislava, where the Jewish records are is not accessible at
all, since they moved to new location. You have to order research.
2. Privacy Law forbids release of data younger than 100 years ( in Slovak case
even younger than 1895, which means civil records) to persons, which are not
members of the family. Nevertheless, there are several church records, which go
far beyond 1895 and are accessible. The restriction concerns more civil records,
but if you go to the parish office, they will also tell you about the law etc.
You have the same privacy laws in US. All countries here have that. After 9/11,
everything got worse.
3.Yes, it is a change. Mostly because there are more and more people going from
door to door; some want to sell something, some want to robb, some kill.
Therefore in Slovakia, where there are loudspeakers in villages and many towns,
the Mayor's offices are warning people not to open the door to strangers
etc.etc. Imagine my feeling, I am standing at the fence and talking to old lady
friendly, but she would not let me in because she is afraid I will robb or kill
her, so I have to open up my case on the ground, take out the papers and talk to
her. All the neighbors see that and after I leave, they all come and ask her
what was this about and who I was and what did I want. A stranger in a village
is a supsicious person. ( and I do not look like a Moslem at all) This is where
we got to with all this "freedom". As in good old communist times, everybody can
now suspect everybody. I read, your situation is not much better either.
While I was in Slovenia I found a even a booklet, issued by the police with all
the advices how to handle the strangers, who come from far away places.
All for our security.
Sure, the most secure place is prison.
Vladimir

Because of our HIPPA laws (those are that no one is
entitled to your medical history, records or
information) -- my priest has literally had to ask his
parishioners to put him on an "approved visitors list"
before he is allowed into hospitals, nursing homes and
the Veterans Hospitals to administer communion and
bless his flock -- and to visit prisoners it's even
more rediculous.

Looking at Jan Kollar's 1834 books of folk songs, I noticed that the first song
is one I have on a tape of Slovak folk music from NW Slovakia. Kollar has it in
a chapter of songs and song fragments that harken back to the Slovak pagan past
(including songs to and about Morena/Muriena/etc. and Perun/Parom/etc.). Does
anyone have any idea of what's behind the song and the name?

<D'und'a>
Each line starts and ends with "Hoja, D'und'a, hoja!" (the song is a dialogue
between 2 groups):

The queen sent us.
For what did she send you?
For three wagons of stones.
Why do you need stones?
To build golden bridges.
Will you let us cross over them?
What will you give us as a gift?
A dark-eyed little girl.
Well then run and hurry!

The next song is about "D'undic~ek". Is he somehow related? The first line is
"Janic~ku, Janic~ku, my dear D'undic~ek!"

And who are Zmok and Lel and Bobo?

Heck, there's even a song (next chapter: historical events) about the Cumans!

Hi everyone,
I've been working on my genealogy, again, and I found there were quite a few
Slovak cemeteries listed online. I got to looking and found a lot with
photos, too.
I found this one page and although I am fairly certain I am not related to
anyone on it, it's fascinating and the tombstones shown on this site are very
unusual. I was wondering if anyone would be kind enough to have a look and
tell me what all of this says.. not the translations on the stones but just a
general idea of what this site is all about. It looks to me like there is
mention of some sort of plague.
Also, are these common types of stones in Slovakia? This is the only
website I've found so far that has any this unusual.

Thankyou all so much for your assistance, in advance.
Best wishes, Kathie Troyan Davis

Hi All,

One more question. My great uncle, John M. Gerenda, was born in Jassa
Ujfaly, Hungary now known as Novochany Slovakia, then came to the US as a young
man. He went to school at Villanova, then switched to Notre Dame where he
graduated. Was that actually in Hungary or was it just called Hungary because
of
the time? He was born before 1873.

He became the pastor of several different churches in the Youngstown (Saint
Matthias Slovak Parish Youngstown, Ohio) and Columbus, OH then became ill and
for some reason, was given permission to go back to Slovakia to visit
family. I know he was in Kosice several times from letters I had saved and he
also
went to other towns in the area.

He died and somehow he was buried in what his Slovak church death
certificate said was a monastery's church cemetery in a town called Erdukta or
Erducta.

I took this death certificate to a university professor, years ago.
Unfortunately, it was stolen in a robbery, along with most of my most important
genealogy possessions :'(

I remember the professor recognized the name of the town as being called
something else now. If I am not mistaken, he said it was in the Czech
Republic,
now, and not Slovakia.

Does anyone here recognize this name, Erdukta or Erducta and if so, can you
please tell me what the name is now? I am thinking it is Ostrava but I am
not sure and I don't even begin to want to start searching for records in a town
that's not the right one in the first place.

Thankyou ALL in advance for anything you can tell me. :-)

Best Wishes, Kathie Troyan Davis

The five calamities that befell the village:

Flood (June 1823, over 100 homes lost)

Fire (13 Sept 1827, 120 homes burned, also the church, three churchbells
melted away)

Epidemic (Cholera, Aug 1831, population of 1801 was reduced to 1395)

Famine (1847, bad harvest, the poor were reduced to eating vegetation which
sickened many and many died)

and 1st/2nd World Wars (77 died in WWI, 9 in WWII).

Slovakia: explosion in a house inhabited by Roma was obviously intentional
criminal act

Explosion damaged a family house bought and reconstructed by a Roma family from
Krežmarok, in municipality K?ížová Ves, yesterday early in the morning. Family
of seven
members was to move into the exploded house. This is already second case of
explosion of
Roma's family houses in course of a few months. Burst happened in cellar of yet
uninhabited
house. Unknown perpetrator poured cellar with a combustible that he set on fire
afterwards.
Consequently, explosion of cumulated exhalations happened. Damage has been
estimated to
160.000 Czech crowns the least. Poprad´s police investigator began criminal
prosecution of
public imperilment. "Coexistence of Roma and non-Roma people in the village is
quite
tensioned, because most of the Roma living there are not able to adjust
themselves to the
others. Nonetheless, it is very unfortunate to solve the matters this way. It
only increases the
tension and coexistence becomes even more complicated," stated provost of the
village.
There are 1755 citizens living in the village out of which 1242 are of the Roma
origin.
