Debojit becomes ‘Voice of India’ By A Staff Reporter GUWAHATI, Feb 24 – At last Debojit Saha of Assam has won the prestigious Zee TV’s Sa Ra Ga Ma Pa contest by securing over 2.77 crore votes. The other contestant Vinit representing Lucknow got 2.72 crore votes. Debojit was declared winner in the final held at Andheri Sports Complex, Mumbai, which continued till midnight.
In the three-hour long final, both the contestants sang a variety of songs composed by different music directors in presence of leading singers, actors, and classical maestros.
It was an eight-month long struggle for Debojit and his guru Ismail Darbar. During the competition, Debojit had to face severe criticism from different circles. But, inspite of that, he remained composed. “Debojit has got immense potential to become a playback singer for which I have extended my support”, Ismail Darbar told The Assam Tribune in a recent interview.
Inspired
by the result, Debojit said that he would remain grateful to the people of Assam. “It was a victory for the unstinted support of my State. During the last eight months, they were solidly supporting me to become the ‘Voice of India’,” he said.
It is learnt that both Ismail Darbar and Debojit will visit the State soon to thank the people of Assam. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and AASU adviser Dr Samujjal Bhattacharyya have congratulated Debojit for his victory.
Immediately after Debojit was declared winner, his fans in the city started bursting crackers to celebrate the occasion.
Sec 144 clamped in Silchar ( Sa Re Ga Ma Pa) From Our Correspondent SILCHAR, Feb 24 – Tension gripped Silchar town today following rumours that the chances of local boy Debojit Saha in the Sa Re Ga Ma Pa singing contest on Zee TV are being sabotaged by a particular community as well as by the state-run telecom company BSNL. The
district administration has imposed Section 144 CrPC in the southern town to prevent any outbreak of violence.
Deputy Commissioner Sunanda Sengupta told this correspondent that CRPF has been deployed in large numbers across the town to protect the Marwari community who are being accused by the Debojit Fan Club of voting for the singer’s sole competitor Vinit Singh of Lucknow. Additional forces are also being rushed in view of apprehensions that violence may break out if Debojit fails to emerge victorious in the final to he held today.
A huge mob ransacked the BSNL’s telemart in the town as BSNL mobile services were disrupted preventing Debojit’s fans from sending mobile text messages in his support. There were accusations that it has been done intentionally to ruin Debojit’s chances in the show where the winner is decided by the number of votes he polls from across the country.
A curfew like situation prevails in Silchar and shops, especially the
ones owned by Marwaris, have downed shutters. There were Bengali-Marwari riots in the town last November over the death of a man. The DC said that the situation is under control.

A voice from Assam can be the voice of India as much as a voice from Delhi or Mumbai or Chennai
TV these days is so full of low-quality drama that I’ve given up watching it. A saas or a bahu occasionally registers fleetingly on my TV screen and my consciousness.
Apart from that there are those equally interminable ‘talent hunts’. These compete with WWE in their style of building up rivalries and contests. Singers deliver dialogues in the manner of Batista meeting John Cena.
It’s all too melodramatic to bear, but apparently it works with most of my country cousins. Now one of these shows, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa on Zee TV, has finally neared its finale. The
mode of selection of these contestants was mainly by viewers poll on phone and SMS.
The first contestant who made it to the round of three is Debojit from Assam. He suddenly found himself facing a rebellion from his fellow-contestants, who threatened to walk out of the event without explicitly stating why. I would have changed the channel at all this natak but a statement by one of the ‘mentors’ in the show stopped me.
Debojit got 80 percent of his votes from Assam, Adesh Shrivastava said. “We want a voice of India, not a voice of Assam”, someone in the studio shouted. Fair enough. Except that, firstly, the fellow had polled more votes than other prospective ‘voices of India’, and secondly, Assam is still despite its several insurgencies a part of India.
A voice from Assam can be the voice of India as much as a voice from Delhi or Mumbai or Chennai. For the past few centuries, the West has dominated the world. So their perceptions of what is ‘mainstream’
have come to dominate globally.
Today we all speak English, listen to pop and rock, pride ourselves on our knowledge of Hollywood and European soccer, and of course dress in jeans and skirts and such likes. However, the point to note is that the average college or school student in America doesn’t know Hindi, or listen to Indian music, or follow cricket, or know who Amitabh Bachchan is.
When Big B was voted the greatest star of stage or screen in a BBC online poll in 1999, there was considerable consternation in the West. The thing that went around then was that India, with its huge population, had voted for Big B and so he won there was no way he could be better than the best of the West.
Which may be true. If the world accepts the definition of what is ‘good’ cinema. Unfortunately, for me, a song from Chhote Miyan Bade Miyan is better cinema than an hour of Gone With the Wind simply because I enjoy it more. So there are these disparities in the
world.
The artists will treat non-artists as charlatans if we try their game. The West will be miffed if our man wins a global award over their icons. Their sense of domination will get jolted. Now think of how the ‘centre’ treats the periphery in India. If you don’t speak Hindi, don’t listen to Bollywood music, don’t care about cricket, you’re an outsider already.
If on top of that you look different say, Mongoloid your status as second-class citizen is almost confirmed. That’s the way life is for many people from the Northeast who come to ‘mainland India’.
They can either become duplicates of the ‘mainstream’ people or stay in their ghettoes. And even if they do adopt ‘mainstream’ ways, the story doesn’t always end happily.
Like Debojit, for example, who sings in Hindi, but must now contend with the fact that his support base is from the Northeast and not the cow belt, which is the ‘mainstream’ merely because it sends more crooks to
Parliament.

Devojit urges public to keep on voting for him From Debasish Banik (assam tribune) BADARPUR, Jan 21 – The only contestant from Assam, as well as from the entire North-East in Zee TV’s Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa Challenge-2005 – Devojit Saha, who is now in the top three has requested people of the State as well as the entire NE region and also to the people of other States to keep voting in favour of him.
Expressing his deep gratitude to the people of Barak and Brahmaputra Valley and also to the people of entire North East and other States of India, Devojit said – the votes of the public is essential for him to win the prestigious contest.
Devojit was talking to The Assam Tribune immediately after he reached the top three positions over telephone from Mumbai. He said that behind his reaching this far, the people of Barak and Brahmaputra
Valley should be equally lauded for their support they have extended and helped to reach this level.
Replying to another question, Devojit said he will try his level best to continue his performance in the next episodes although two of the judges Adesh Srivastav and Himesh Reshammia are not doing justice to him. This was vehemently protested last week by Devojit’s guru, Ismail Darbar by leaving the competition hall. He also said that it is a matter of deep regret that anti-Devojit group including Himesh and Adesh suggested to the Zee TV director to cancel all the votes of Assam, from where Devojit hails. But the Zee TV director reflected their suggestion and said that the programme continues as per rules and regulations of this competition.
Meanwhile, after getting record votes, endless blessings, good wishes and heartfelt love from a large number of people of all sections, political parties and from uncountable Devojit fans clubs and organisations, the
entire assam is overflowing with joy and is playing fireworks, spraying perfumes and distributing sweets and fruits. On the other hand, various sections of people also burnt the effigies of two mentors of Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa Himesh and Adesh for showing personal jealousy towards Devojit.

The prestigious SA RE GA MA PA is rigged and ZEE doesn't want Debojit of Assam to win. Then why you accepted participants from assam or northeast? ZEE TV is totally biased and trying their best to eleminate debojit from assam.
On the last show Ismail Darbar was right and i support his decision to leave the show. I think they (zee+Adesh+Himesh) decided to finish debojit, so there is no point of fighting alone against all. I also think this is (13thjanshow) debojit's last show because people votes after watching which contestant gets how much marks from mentors. The way debojit performed today, it's very difficult for others to sing such a difficult kawali. But again he got low marks from mentors. All were shocked .
Also they spread the news that ULFA wants debojit to win. These all are politics and they will
not allow him to win. If there is an insult to our state (assam) then it's better leave the show.
Debojit should leave the show at this point of time. I hope Ismailji will try his best to help debojit in his career.
I don't believe it. Zee doesn't want debojit to win. Instead they want vinit singh. There are lot's of politics going on in order to defeat debojit but still he is on top 4. But i am sure next week he will be out and they planned his exit.
One can get the real picture from India-forums.com. Everybody knows it. On the show debojit was insulted because he is getting maximum votes from assam. What's his fault? On the show Himesh deliberately insulted debojit and people of assam for
voting debojit. This show (sa re ga ma pa) is rigged and i think debojit should comeout of it.
Debojit in 5th round of Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa By Surajit Khaund (assam tribune.com)
GUWAHATI, Jan 4 — “My main goal is to take my State to a new high and I am grateful to the people of Assam the way they have extended their support”. This was the immediate reaction of Debojit Saha, participating in the popular music contest of Zee TV, Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa. Debojit, the only contestant representing Assam, has qualified for the next episode to be telecast tomorrow. He is now among the top five contestants participating in the Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa.
“This is a unique experience in my life to represent my State and that too in a platform like the Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa and I have received tremendous support from the State”, Debojit told this correspondent over telephone from Mumbai.
Inspired by the folk music of Assam, he
left for Mumbai in 2002 for higher training under the guidance of Pt Askaran Sharma. Within a short period of time, he became popular among the renowned music directors including Ismail Darbar. He had qualified for the Sa-Re-Ga-Ma-Pa with active support from Ismail Darbar, popularly known as Yaalgar Ho. Expressing his satisfaction with Guru Ismail Darbar, he said that ‘Ismail sir’ has put in lot of hard work in grooming his career. “Whatever I have achieved so far, it is because of Darbar sir”, he said.
Debojit has already done several stage shows along with the leading singers in the country and sung title songs for TV serials.
“My next round is very crucial for which I am now eagerly waiting for support from the people in the State,” he added.

HOWEVER, I FIND IT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND HOW A WEBSITE BOAST OF BECOMING NO 1 PORTAL OF NORTHEAST INDIA WHEN ITS LIVE MUSIC LINK CONTAINS
MUSIC FROM ALL OVER EVEN FROM BANGLADESH BUT NOTHING FROM EITHER ASSAM OR NORTHEAST.
SECONDLY, BARAK VALLEY DOES NOT REPRESENT ASSAM BUT AN INTEGRAL PART OF ASSAM. I HAVE GONE THROUGH THE ARTICLE ON DEBOJIT IN ASSAM TRIBUNE. BUT UNFORTUNATELY THE WRITER MENTIONED THAT DEBOJIT IS THE PRIDE OF BARAK VALLEY. SO HOW DOES HE ASK THE PEOPLE FROM OTHER PARTS OF ASSAM TO VOTE FOR HIM ????
THIRDLY ASSAM IS NOT CHAUVINISTIC LIKE KASHMIR OR WEST BENGAL WHERE PEOPLE VOTES FOR A NON SINGER LIKE KAZI AND SUPPORT SOUTH AFRICA BECAUSE SAURAV GANGULY WAS NOT INCLUDED IN INDIAN TEAM.
DEBOJIT IS A GOOD SINGER AND HE HAS REACHED SEMI FINALS BECAUSE OF HIS ABILITY AND NOT BECAUSE OF VOTES. LET HIM PROVE HIS CAPABILITY INFRONT OF OTHER SINGERS. BECAUSE MERE VOTES IS NOT GOING TO
MAKE HIM KISHORE KUMAR OR SONU NIGAM.
WINNING THROUGH VOTES WILL ONLY GOT HIM A CASSETTE CONTRACT OR A FEW LIVE SHOWS BUT WINNING WITH THE CONSENT OF PEOPLE LIKE HIMESH RESHAMIYA OR DURBAR WILL MAKE HIS CARRER AND HIS MOTHER’S DREAM COME TRUE. THEN ASSAM WILL ALSO BECOME PROUD OF HIM LIKE OTHER LEGENDS -DR BHUPEN HAZARIKA OR JUBIN GARG.
SO ALL THE BEST TO DEBOJIT.

SILCHAR (ASSAM), Dec 7: Pacer Jhulan Goswami came up with a five-wicket haul as India drubbed England by 10 wickets in the fourth match to win the One-day International Women's Series in style here today.
Woman of the match Goswami treated a strong 20,000 crowd at the Jatindra Mohan Dev stadium to a magnificent spell of medium pace bowling, finishing with a career best 5/16 as England were bundled out for a pathetic 50 in 30.4 overs on a slow pitch after being put in to bat.
Indian openers Karuna Jain (12) and Jaya Sharma (29) did the rest in style as the home side raced to 51 without loss in 14.5 overs at the stroke of lunch to register one of their easiest triumphs.
With today's win, India have taken an unassailable 3-1 lead
in the five-match series with the fifth match to be held in Kolkata rendered inconsequential.
The home team took control of the match in the morning itself, with Goswami getting rid of the highest scorer in the previous Guwahati match skipper Charlotte Edwards even before she could open her account.
After that the visitors's wickets fell like a pack of cards as Goswami, combining well with Amita Sharma (2/14), almost ran through the English innings.
The tourists had themselves to blame as the batswomen played reckless shots and slumped to their lowest total ever.
In Guwahati in 1995, the England eves were all out for 78 in a one-day match against India.
Northeast needs more such international sporting events in order to improve the standards of different sports.

Debajit Saha from Silchar has reached to the finals of Zee TV's popular music show/ talent hunt. Now his fate is in the hand of the viewers. The rule is now, who ever gets the least vote will be eliminated and in that process the last one remaing in the competition will win the crown. Debajit's voice quality deserves a lot for him.
Now, every contestant is seeking the support of his/her state to get the maxm number of votes & I think being a Silchari, we should be the one who can cast some votes for him.
I've not known to him personally but just feel like supporting him to bring up the name of my long lost mother land to forefront. For the information of those who do not have idea on how to support him Call 190-4424-7575-08 to vote or send an SMS writing DEBOJIT to 7575. "THE AJMAL FAMILY HAVE MADE AN EMPIRE OUT OF ASSAMS SACHI TREES. NOW, THEY HAVE BECOME SO POWERFUL THAT THEY ARE FUNDING THE ISLAMIC (BANGLADESHI) FUNDEMENTALISM IN ASSAM. ONE OF THAT FAMILY, Mr. BADR UDDIN AJMAL IS ACTIVELY WORKING ON ANTI ASSAMESE POLITICAL ACTIVITIES. I DONT KNOW HOW MUCH REVENEW ASSAM IS GETTING FROM THE SACHI TREES USED BY AJMAL.THEY ARE GETTING MILLIONS OF DINNERS,RIALS,DIRHAMS AND GIVING ASSAM PENNYIS. ALSO, A PORTION OF THEIR EARNING IS GOING TO THE BANGLADESHI SETTLERS FUNDEMENTALIST PARTIES. I FEEL, WE SHOULD STOP LETTING AJMAL TO IUSE SACHI TREES HERE AND MARKET IT OURSELVES INSTEAD."
