I've also heard of the foamy paper on top and they come out great with that....
I learned that at an embroidery club I belong to.

I second the opinion about the bridal veiling being used. I also use a
stabilizer on the bottom, then on the top the bridal veiling, then WSS. I
have towels that I did about 10 years ago using this method and they are
still good.
