5:67  Oh Messenger! Deliver what has been revealed to you from your Lord;
and if you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah
will protect you from the people; surely Allah will not guide the
unbelieving people.

Agha Mahdi Pouya says:

There is no historical evidence or traditions which may inform us that
(after the revelation of Deliver you what has been sent down unto you from
your Lord; and if you do not do it, then you have not delivered His message
at all) any command relating either to doctrine or practice was announced
by the Holy Prophet. The decision of wilayah or imamah (successorship of the
Holy Prophet) should have been and was the most important issue to complete
the religion of Allah, therefore, in this verse through the above noted
emphatic words, the almighty Lord of the worlds has asked His last messenger
to declare the name of his successor as prophethood was going to be
terminated after him and this duty was so rightly emphasised that if it was
not done the Holy Prophet would have not carried out the divine mission for
which he was chosen. It also implies that without declaration of the
successorship of the divinely chosen successor the din would have remained
incomplete and defective. So after the declaration of the wilayah or imamah
of Ali ibn Abi Taleb, at Ghadir Khum, verse 3 of this surah was revealed:

This day I have perfected, for you, your religion and have completed My
favour on you, and have chosen for you Islam (to be) your religion.

It is known to all that the divine arrangement of the surah and their verses
is not based on chronological order. Verse 3 of this surah was revealed
after the revelation of this verse

Ma unzila cannot mean whatever or all that which has been revealed, as
some commentators try to do because an order to repeat all the doctrinal and
practicable teachings, so far revealed, as a reminder. Does not justify the
use of the words If you do not do it, then you have not delivered the
message (Islam) at all. Moreover, in the long sermon, the Holy Prophet gave
at Ghadir Khum. he first enumerated all the divine commands, he conveyed to
the people one by one and obtained the confirmation of all those who were
present there that he did exactly what he had mentioned, then he declared
that of whomsoever he was the mawla, Ali was his Mawla- a declaration of
the utmost importance for the completion and perfection of the religion of
Allah, the sole axis of his 23 years of prophetic mission. The verse also
points out the danger the Holy Prophet might encounter due to the
appointment of Ali as his successor, not from the infidels, but from the
people surrounding him, the hypocrites, who had their own plans to carry out
after his departure; and also assures the Holy Prophet that He would protect
him from their mischief. Any man of ordinary common-sense knows that in only
repeating the already revealed commands there could have been no danger to
be encountered by the Holy Prophet. It was the declaration of Alis
successorship that could generate the hostility the hypocrites had hidden
within themselves, and history is a witness that they all opposed Ali and
his descendants after the departure of the Holy Prophet, persecuted them and
killed them. The issue of wilayah or imamah had to be decisively finalised
so that there be no plea for the ummah against Allah (an-Nisa: 165). Now the
burden of discord and deviation, in which a large number of Muslims and
their leaders, whom they follow or followed, sank deep after the Holy
Prophet, has to be carried by them till they are summoned before Allah on
the day of judgement along with their leaders (Bani Israil: 71). On the day
of reckoning they shall not have any excuse, because verses 67 and 3 of this
surah and declaration of Alis wilayah is an everlasting argument and
evidence (hujjat) over the ummah in particular and mankind in general.

Please also refer to the commentary of verse 55 of this surah for further
proofs of the wilayah or imamah of Ali ibn Abu Taleb.

According to Imam Jafar as-Sadeq, although salat, zakat, sawm and hajj are
(generally considered) the pillars of din, yet more emphasis was laid on and
importance given to (the issue of) waliyah by Allah (through verses 67 and 3
of al-Maedah).

Ghadeer Series: Part four of Five

The last moments and the incident of pen and ink:

The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.)
was worried about the people’s security even on his death bed. He said:
“Give
me a paper. Let me write down something by which you can never go astray.” On
this, the second caliph remarked, “He is speaking in state of instability (of
mind), (i.e.) He does not know what he is saying). You have the book of Allah
and the book of Allah shall suffice for us.” These words lead to a heated
argument among those present. The Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.) had arranged for his
successorship even while breathing his last few breaths, but the Muslims did
not care nor did they accept. Well, its an entirely different story that when
the first caliph was jotting down his will while in a state of overwhelming,
none dared to say that he was writing in a state of instability (of mind) and
that the book of Allah is sufficient for us. From these discussions, this fact
is revealed that the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.a.), from Dhul Asheera to death bed,
i.e. from the beginning to the end of his prophethood, had made all the
possible ar rangements for his successorship and left no stone unturned to make
this matter clear. Now, to say that because the Quraysh were against Hazrat
Ali’s (a.s.) caliphate and because of the fear of this opposition, he was not
given caliphate is sheer stupidity. Read more

Prophethood and Imamat: The Door of Allah. The discussion of Imamat and
Caliphate is not just a historical one. A Prophet is not the one whose only
task is to relate divine laws. Rather, it is through the Prophet that one can
gain access to the Lord’s presence. Whosoever intends to present himself
before
his Lord, it is essential for him that he acknowledges the
Messengership/Prophethood of the Messenger/Prophet so that his worship becomes
acceptable before Allah. The Holy Quran has talked about this reality in the
following words, “Say (O Prophet): If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah
will
love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most
Merciful.”

Importance of Fitrat in Tawheed

Despite all these signs of Allah present in the nature, why is man unable
to reach unto Him?

Man can recognise his Lord through the structure and fabrication of
something as insignificant as an atom. That is, Allah’s presence is apparent
in
the smallest of His creations and serves as sufficient proof for the belief in
His existence. However, man himself should be inclined towards this belief in
Allah’s existence. For if man is averse and reluctant to acknowledge this
fact,
then all the proofs and evidences that are advanced, shall be rendered
ineffective. The points highlighted below are noteworthy. 1. Take for instance,
a vendor who sells mirrors but has unkempt hair. He glances at the mirror any
number of times in a day. However, despite his untidy appearance, he does not
bother to adjust his hair. For looking good is not the foremost thing in his
mind. All he is concerned about is selling mirrors and doing brisk business. 2.
Say you observe a man wiping the glass of a watch with his kerchief. If you ask
him the time, he will glance at the watch again before he tells you the time.
This is because he was preoccupied with cleaning the glass and was not actually
tracking the time. Read more

Maxims of Imam Husain (a.s.)

“The one who loves you will reprimand you, while the one who hates you
will praise you.” (Behaarul Anwaar, vol. 78, pg. 128)

Through this tradition, Imam Husain (a.s.) defines a true friend and well
wisher; he is the one who draws our attention to our short comings. On the
contrary, a person who praises us falsely and prevents us from improving
ourselves is in fact an enemy because he hinders us from walking on the path of
truth and salvation.

2. “The one who solves even one problem of a believer, Allah will solve
all his problems of this world as well the Hereafter.”

(Behaarul Anwaar, vol. 78, pg. 122)

This is one of the best traditions on the subject of solving the
difficulties of believers. It encourages mutual cooperation and maintaining of
brotherhood among believers. It contains the solution to all our troubles. The
list of our worldly problems is extensive; add to this the indescribable
tribulations of the Hereafter – whose intensity is beyond our comprehension.
But may our lives be sacrificed on this oppressed Imam (a.s.) who has shown us
an easy method and avenue to obtain salvation – by solving the problems of our
believer brethren. Read more

Ghadir alongside the Holy Quran

The members of the Islamic society think of the religion as the most primary
principle in their life, and believe that if there is no religion, the life
will be worthless. They believe that the only mean to glory and happiness in
the world and the afterworld is religion and having relation with God. A
Muslim tries to guide his path of life to the direction of religion and all
his efforts are to apply the rules of God in his life.

By referring to the Holy Quran, we come across to cases that the meaning of
the verses are not clear for the reader, and are somehow inexplicit and
unspecific. Undoubtedly, many of the verses of the Quran about the rules of
Islam are unspecific and general that no one can understand their meaning
without an external help. For example, the statement: Perform the Salat
(1) in the second chapter of the Holy Quran is unspecific. That means that
no one can apprehend the details of performing the Salat (prayer), its
conditions, the times of Salat, and the actions that will render it null, by
himself, with only referring to this verse. Similarly, the verse The right
of God upon people is that they should intend for the house (and perform the
Hajj) (2) is unspecific as well. No one can apprehend the meaning of Hajj
and its rituals that include hundreds of rules of Miqat, Ihram, Tawaf
(circumambulate), camping in Arafat, Mashar, and Mina, etc. Allah (SWT) has
determined that the Holy Quran should be unspecific, and naturally its
interpreter should be beside it, because the unspecific constitution would
not be effective and useful without the interpreter beside it.

Now that the interpreter should be beside the Holy Quran as a clarification
for its inexplicitness, obviously that person should be aware of all its
truths and be free from error. During the lifetime of the Prophet Muhammad
(S), he was the interpreter of the Holy Quran himself. God addresses the
Great Prophet (S) and says: We descended the remembrance (the Quran) upon
you, so that you explain it for the people. (3) The Holy Quran is for all
the people, and it is revealed for their guidance; however, people need the
explanation of the Prophet to understand the unspecific rules of it. If the
Holy Quran was explicit for all, there was no need for an interpreter, and
the statement to explain for the people was redundant, and in another
verse it would not say when you do not have the knowledge of the truths of
Quran, ask those who know. (4)

This means that the Holy Quran has its own experts and Muslims should refer
to them in order to find out its meanings. The expert (Ahl) of the Holy
Quran and its clarifier is Prophet Muhammad (S) according to the statement
to explain for the people.

According to the testimony of history and frequent (Mutawater) narrations
unanimously accepter by all Muslims, Eid al-Ghadir is the day in which the
Great Prophet of Islam (S), who brought the Holy Quran and was its
clarifier, introduced Ali ibn Abi Taleb (AS) as the Master and ruler of the
Muslims. (5), (6).

The Muslims used to refer to the Messenger of Allah (S) as their master and
religious leader in order to comprehend the concepts of the verses of the
Holy Quran during his lifetime, likewise after his demise they should refer
to the master introduced by him to get to the purposes of the verses of the
Holy Quran.

The history of Islam and Islamic narrations are full of instances which Imam
Amir al-Momenin, Ali (AS), explained and clarified the divine verses of the
Holy Quran. (7) Therefore one of the results of Ghadir is definition of Amir
al-Momenin (AS) as the clarifier of the Holy Quran after the Prophet and the
necessity to refer to him in order to resolve ambiguities of the Holy Quran.
Now how do we act in order to resolve the ambiguities of the Holy Quran?

(The above is a selection from Ghadir, the Proof for the Mastership of Amir
al-Momenin Ali (AS) by Ayatollah Sayyed Muhammad Dhiya-Abadi, with
changes)

Roshd website congratulates all Muslims and especially you dear friend, upon
18th of Dhi al-Hijjah, the anniversary of assigning Imam Amir al-Momenin,
Ali (AS), as the Master and Leader of Muslims.

The Messenger of Allah (S) said, Indeed I am leaving with you two weighty
things, the Book of Allah and my family.

Considering the high position of the Holy Quran in Islam and its critical
status among the Muslims, the Roshd website is planning to update a new
section called Quran. We would like to ask you dear friend to inform us of
your suggestions and comments via the Contact us section. We hope that we

5. You may refer to the article entitled as The event of Ghadir and its
Importance if you are willing to know how the event and Hadith of Ghadir
proves the Mastership of Imam Amir al-Momenin (AS).

6. The Great Prophet of Islam (S) introduced Amir al-Momenin (AS) as his
successor in clarifying the Holy Quran in many instances such as frequent
hadiths of Thaqalayn and Manzelah. Moreover, the Great Prophet (S) addressed
the people in a part of his sermon on the day of Ghadir:

I have left two precious things with you; one of them is more important
than the other: the Book of Allah and my family. Then take care how you
treat with them. Verily these two will never be separated till the
resurrection day until they come to me at the pond (of Kawthar).
(al-Mustadrak ala as-Sahihayn, Hakim Nayshabouri, volume 9, The Section
Virtues of Amir al-Momenin, Ali ibn Abi Taleb, Hadith number 4553)

This narration is also mentioned in the Shiah narration books with the same
concept. The Holy Prophet (S) introduced Amir al-Momenin (AS) as the knower
of the Book of Allah and its interpreter and peer in different parts of his
sermon on the day of Ghadir.

By God whatever is deeply rooted in it (the Holy Quran), and the true
meaning and the sense of it cannot be explained to man, except by this man
that I am holding his hand high; now I announce that: Whomsoever I am
master to, so is this Ali to him master! And he is none but Ali, the son
of Abi Taleb, my brother, my successor and my help, whose Leaderships
Decree, has been sent to me from God, Almighty. Oh people! It is obvious
that Ali and my pure descendants born in this family represent the minor
precious thing, and the Quran represents major. Either of these two heralds,
and relates to another, they are in harmony with one another: they will not
separate from each other until they come to me at the pond of Kawthar Oh
people! This is Ali, my brother, successor and so is he my [aide and]
Knowledge keeper! And he is my successor for my people who, believe in me,
and he is my successor who aids me in the interpretation of the Book of God,
and he is the one who will invite people to that. (Ihtejaj Tabarsi, volume
1, page 60)

7. Furthermore, Amir al-Momenin (AS) introduced himself as the owner of the
knowledge of the Holy Quran. For example in one of his sermons he says:

It is the Quran. If you ask it to speak it wont do so; but I will tell you
about it. Know that it contains knowledge of what is to come about, stories
of the past, cure for your ills and regulation for whatever faces you.
(Nahj al-Balaghah, sermon 157: About the Holy Prophet and the Holy Quran,
al-Kafi, volume 1, page 61)

The omniscient God has prescribed a thorough and perfect religion for
guidance and growth of the people, and has introduced a leader to execute
and explain this religion. Logically, this leader should be free from errors
and faults, and on the other hand, he should be fully aware of all the
truths and knowledge of the religion. Inevitably, this divine leader should
have a comprehensive knowledge pertaining to the truths of the revelation
and the Holy Quran. Since the Holy Quran is, in reality, the constitution of
Islam and the source of the religious rules and knowledge.

Ghadir marks true path of the Islamic Ummah
December 6, 2009

Leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Sayyed Ali Khamenei received
thousands of people Sunday on the occasion of the 18th of Dhul-Hijjah
(December 6) which marks Eid al-Ghadir al-Khum (the day in which the
Noblest Messenger of Allah Hadhrat Muhammad (S) announced Imam Ali (AS) as
his successor) and said enjoying the divine criterion, the Ghadir issue
marks the true path of the Islamic Ummah.

Ayatollah Khamenei congratulated the Iranian nation and all Muslims around
the world on the occasion of Eid Ghadir al-Khum and said the Ghadir event
is deeper than other Islamic feasts in which the permanent duty of Muslims
over guidance and government was determined according to divine criteria, so
it was named as the greatest Islamic feast.

Pointing to Quranic verses over completion of Islam in the Ghadir event,
Leader of the Islamic Revolution said in fact the leader of the faithful
(Imam Ali) was appointed by God and the Noblest Messenger of Allah Hadhrat
Muhammad (S) completed his prophesy by announcing the issue.

Referring to some verses of Quran and other Islamic valid documents,
Ayatollah Khamenei said Hadhrat Ali ibn Abi Taleb was the most perfect man
in knowledge, piety, sacrifice, struggle and other virtues. He invited all
Muslims to study and think deeply about these truths.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution underlined on Islamic unity and said we do
not expect an Islamic sect accepts beliefs of another sect but our logical
call on Muslims is that they should study and think deeply about the truths
were released by great ulama including Sayyed Sharafoddin and Amini.

Ayatollah Khamenei named the leader of the faithful (Imam Ali) as an
example for the youth and advised all people to take examples from Imam Ali
(AS) for their different passages of life.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution said that Shiism has originated from
divine inspiration and Quranic values.

Ayatollah Khamenei rejected some accusations against Shiism that it is a
forged and political belief and said that the Ghadir event is a definite
issue in the Islamic history which foils all these accusations and
elucidates spirit and origin of Shiism.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution said Zionists, Americans and other
imperialist powers are extremely fearful of Muslim nations awakening and
Iranian nations serving as a model for others. Thats why they
(westerners) have been using ample ploys and tricks over the past thirty
years to marginalize the nation and the country but to no avail. Under Gods
grace, neither will they be able to do so in the future.

Ayatollah Khamenei slammed the Zionists and enemies lies over Irans
nuclear issue and said, The enemies of the nation with telling lie and
creating trick try to mislead worlds public opinions, but when the
realities became clear, they would hit by disgrace.

Ayatollah Khamenei warned the leaders of America, England and other Europe
an countries to avoid telling lie, adding, As we have announced times and
again, Iranian nation seek nuclear energy for scientific purposes, believing
that tomorrow, when the worlds economic wheels turn on nuclear power, it
will be too late for them, if they fail to acquire the knowledge, technology
and might today.

The Iranian nation tries to earn the nuclear knowledge to fulfill the needs
of the next 20 or 30 years generation, but the West by creating turmoil,
accusation and telling lie try to prevent the IRI national success,
Ayatollah Khamenei added.

Westerns raise hues and cry, accusations and lies to prevent
materialization of the objective, the IR Leader said. He cautioned the
audience against imperialist powers political and propaganda conspiracies
to deprive Iranian nation from their absolute nuclear right.

Whenever the world arrogant powers when fail in using threats, military
attacks and sanctions against a nation, they seek to sow discord among them,
the IR Leader added.

Ayatollah Khamenei termed Iranian nation as patience, brave and resistant
and said, The leaders of arrogant powers in their propaganda talk about
their patience, but they know they have no patience before the Iranian
nation. They (arrogant powers) have arranged all their political, economical
and military plots to defeat the nation.

The Leader of the Islamic Revolution highlighted patience and resistance of
the Iranian nation as the grounds for progress in the country, reiterating,
The Iranian patient nation will foil the aliens hue and cry and continues
the way of the founder of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Khomeini with
vigilance and will conquer peaks of glory.

For example, the statement:"Perform the Salat" (1)
in the second chapter of the Holy Quran is unspecific. That means that no
one can apprehend the details of performing the Salat (prayer), its
conditions, the times of Salat, and the actions that will render it null, by
himself, with only referring to this verse. Similarly, the verse "The right
of God upon people is that they should intend for the house (and perform the
Hajj)" (2) is unspecific as well. No one can apprehend the meaning of Hajj
and its rituals that include hundreds of rules of Mighaat, Ihram, Tawaf
(circumambulate), camping in Arafat, Mash'ar, and Mina, etc.

(PBUH&HP), he was the interpreter of the Holy Quran himself. God addresses
the Great Prophet (PBUH&HP) and says: "We descended the remembrance (the
Quran) upon you, so that you explain it for the people." (3) The Holy Quran
is for all the people, and it is revealed for their guidance; however,
people need the explanation of the Prophet to understand the unspecific
rules of it. If the Holy Quran was explicit for all, there was no need for
an interpreter, and the statement "to explain for the people" was redundant,
and in another verse it would not say ".when you do not have the knowledge
of the truths of Quran, ask those who know." (4)

This means that the Holy Quran has its own experts and Muslims should refer
to them in order to find out its meanings. The expert (Ahl) of the Holy
Quran and its clarifier is Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) according to the
statement "to explain for the people".

According to the testimony of history and frequent (Mutawatir) narrations
unanimously accepter by all Muslims, Eid al-Ghadir is the day in which the
Great Prophet of Islam (PBUH&HP), who brought the Holy Quran and was its
clarifier, introduced Ali ibn Abi Talib (PBUH) as the Master and ruler of
the Muslims. (5), (6)

The Muslims used to refer to the Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HP) as their
master and religious leader in order to comprehend the concepts of the
verses of the Holy Quran during his lifetime, likewise after his demise they
should refer to the master introduced by him to get to the purposes of the
verses of the Holy Quran.

The history of Islam and Islamic narrations are full of instances which Imam
Amir al-Mu'minin, Ali (PBUH), explained and clarified the divine verses of
the Holy Quran. (7) Therefore one of the results of Ghadir is definition of
Amir al-Mu'minin (PBUH) as the clarifier of the Holy Quran after the Prophet
and the necessity to refer to him in order to resolve ambiguities of the
Holy Quran. Now how do we act in order to resolve the ambiguities of the
Holy Quran?

(The above is a selection from "Ghadir, the Proof for the Mastership of Amir
al-M'minin Ali (PBUH)" by Ayatullah Sayyed Muhammad Dia' Abadi, with
changes)

Quran and Etrat website congratulates all Muslims and especially you dear
friend, upon 18th of Dhi al-Hijjah, the anniversary of assigning Imam Amir
al-Mu'minin, Ali (PBUH), as the Master and Leader of Muslims.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH&HP) said, "Indeed I am leaving with you two
weighty things, the Book of Allah and my family."

Considering the high position of the Holy Quran in Islam and its critical
status among the Muslims, the Roshd website is planning to update a new
section called Quran. We would like to ask you dear friend to inform us of
your suggestions and comments via the <http://www.roshd.org/eng/contact/>
Contact us section. We hope that we can present a better service with your
valuable comments. So keep staying with us.

Since the Holy Quran is, in reality, the constitution of
Islam and the source of the religious rules and knowledge.

proves the Mastership of Imam Amir al-Mu'minin (PBUH).

6. The Great Prophet of Islam (PBUH&HP) introduced Amir al-Mu'minin (PBUH)
as his successor in clarifying the Holy Quran in many instances such as
frequent Hadiths of Thaqalayn and Manzilah. Moreover, the Great Prophet
(PBUH&HP) addressed the people in a part of his sermon on the day of Ghadir:

"I have left two precious things with you; one of them is more important
than the other: the Book of Allah and my family. Then take care how you
treat with them. Verily these two will never be separated till the
resurrection day until they come to me at the pond (of Kawthar)."
(Al-Mustadrak ala al-Sahihain, Hakim Neishaboori, vol. 9, The Section
"Virtues of Amir al-Mu'minin, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Hadith No. 4553)

This narration is also mentioned in the Shia narration books with the same
concept. The Holy Prophet (PBUH&HP) introduced Amir al-Mu'minin (PBUH) as
the knower of the Book of Allah and its interpreter and peer in different
parts of his sermon on the day of Ghadir.

"By God whatever is deeply rooted in it (the Holy Quran), and the true
meaning and the sense of it cannot be explained to man, except by this man
that I am holding his hand high; now I announce that: 'Whomsoever I am
master to, so is this Ali to him master!' And he is none but Ali, the son of
Abi Talib, my brother, my successor and my help, whose Leadership's Decree,
has been sent to me from God, Almighty. O people! It is obvious that Ali and
my pure descendants born in this family represent the minor precious thing,
and the Qur'an represents major. Either of these two heralds, and relates to
another, they are in harmony with one another: they will not separate from
each other until they come to me at the pond of 'Kawthar' . O people! This
is Ali, my brother, successor and so is he my [aide and] Knowledge keeper!
And he is my successor for my people who, believe in me, and he is my
successor who aids me in the interpretation of the Book of God, and he is
the one who will invite people to that." (Ihtijaj Tabarsi, vol. 1, p. 60)

7. Furthermore, Amir al-Mu'minin (PBUH) introduced himself as the owner of
the knowledge of the Holy Quran. For example in one of his sermons he says:

"It is the Qur'an. If you ask it to speak it won't do so; but I will tell
you about it. Know that it contains knowledge of what is to come about,
stories of the past, cure for your ills and regulation for whatever faces
you." (Nahj al-Balaghah, sermon 157: About the Holy Prophet and the Holy
Qur'an, al-Kafi, vol. 1, p. 61)

Saudi rockets kill Shiah civilians in North Yemen

Saudi military has reportedly killed several civilians in its latest round
of land and air attacks on the Shiah-populated northern Yemen.

The mortalities included several children, said the Shiah Houthi fighters
who have been resisting fierce state-led offensives as well as attacks by
Saudi armed forces in the northwestern Sadah province.

Reporting on the conflict on their website, the resistance fighters said
they had foiled a Saudi incursion into northern Yemen. The Saudi soldiers
then reacted by firing a dozen rockets at villages at Mount ad-Dukhan and
surrounding areas.

The Saudi shelling continued overnight, according to the source.

The fighters are accused by the government of seeking to re-establish a
clerical rule, overthrown in a 1962 coup, a charge rejected by the Shiah
resistance, who maintain that the central government is widely corrupt and
bent on violating their basic civil rights.

Riyadh, which has recently joined the offensives against the Houthis by
Sana'a, has also claimed that the fighters had attacked one of its border
checkpoints.

The Houthis, on the other hand, condemn the government's armed campaign as a
marginalization attempt which is backed by the Saudi-backed Wahhabi
extremists.

Wahhabism, an extremely intolerant interpretation of Islam, is the official
religion in Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom has been facing criticism from its own
Shiah population over the widespread discrimination against them.

The Saudi Wahhabism, also known as Salafism, has been accused of fuelling
and funding terrorism against Shiah Muslims as well as others across the
world.

On Friday, the Human Rights Watch, an international rights group, voiced
concern over the civilians caught in the north Yemen conflict.

Raising the prospects of a humanitarian crisis in the violence-torn area,
the UN figures indicate that the offensives have displaced some 175,000
civilians who suffer from severe malnutrition.

The al-Mazraq camp in the western Yemeni province of Hajjah, south of Sadah,
receives more than 900 new refugees every day.

He is the first one to believe in Islam;
He is the most knowledgeable;
He is the most correct one in his religion;
He is the most certain;
He is the most patient;
He is the most forgiving and generous;
He is the bravest in heart;
He is the Imam and the successor after me.

In His Name, The Most Gracious, The Most Merciful

as-Salamun Alaykum,

Eid al-Ghadir - 18 Dhul-Hejjah/December 6, 2009

The 18th of Dhul-Hejjah is a very important day in the calendar of the
followers of the Ahlul-Bayt, (AS). It is known as Eid al-Ghadir, referring
to that great moment in history when the Holy Prophet Muhammad (S), may God
bless him and his household, declared in front of over 100,000 Muslims
returning from Hajj, the Wilayat Of Ali ibn Abi Taleb (AS).

Upon returning from Hajj, a verse was revealed to the Prophet (S), Oh
Apostle! Deliver what has been sent down to you from your Lord; and if you
dont do it, you have not delivered His message (at all); and Allah will
protect you from the people... (Quran 5:67). It was after revelation that
the Prophet called out to all Muslims and delivered a lengthy sermon which
included him saying: For whoever I am his Leader (mawla), Ali is his Leader
(mawla).

Imam Jafar as-Sadeq (AS) was asked if there was Eid for Muslims besides
Friday, Adha and Fitr. Imam replied, Yes, there is one more Eid which is
most great in holiness (aadhamuha hurmatan). The person asked him which
Eid that was. Imam said: It is the day when the Messenger of God declared
Amir al-Momenin his vicegerent, saying: waman kuntu mawlahu fa-
aliyyun mawlah (For whoever I am his Leader (mawla), Ali is his Leader
(mawla)).

The Prophet on this day also said: Oh God, love those who love him, and be
hostile to those who are hostile to him.

On this auspicious and divine occasion we extend our Heartiest and Happy
Greetings.

Amal for Eid al-Ghadir

The Day of Ghadir is said to be an Eid that is most great as mentioned by
our 6th Imam Jafar as-Sadeq (AS).

Our 8th Imam Ali ar-Ridha (AS) has said:
It is highly rewarding to be in Najaf al-Ashraf today for performing the
Ziyarat of Imam Ali ibn Abi Taleb (AS). Give today as much as you can, in
the name of Allah, to the less fortunate, because, the Day of Ghadir is
particularly specified for helping deserving people.

While some of us cant be physically be present in Najaf on this holy day,
let us be spiritually there and pray that we get the invitation to be there
next year Insha-Allah.

5:3 Forbidden to you is that which dies of itself, and blood, and flesh
of swine, and that on which any other name than that of God has been
invoked, and the strangled (animal) and that beaten to death, and that
killed by a fall and that killed by being smitten with the horn, and that
which wild beasts have eaten, except what you slaughter, and what is
sacrificed on stones set up (for idols) and that you divide by the arrows;
that is a transgression. This day have those who disbelieve despaired of
your religion, so fear them not, and fear Me. This day have I perfected for
you your religion and completed My favour on you and chosen for you Islam as
a religion; but whoever is compelled by hunger, not inclining wilfully to
sin, then surely God is Forgiving, Merciful.

Agha Mahdi Pouya and Mir Ahmad Alis Commentary: 5:3:

Please refer to the commentary of al-Baqarah: 173 for carrion (corpse of a
dead animal), blood flesh of swine, and that over which is invoked the name
a ghayrullah (other than God). Also forbidden are the strangled, the beaten
down, the fallen down, the gored, that which has been devoured by beasts of
prey, and that which has been slaughtered at altars; and also dividing the
meat by casting lots with arrows is forbidden.

Illa ma dhakkaytun-tadhkiyah means to cleanse (allowing the heat in the
body to pass away through the Islamic way of slaughter).

From al-yawm to Islama dina was revealed when the Holy Prophet announced
at Ghadir Khum: Of whomsoever I am the mawla (master) Ali is his mawla
(master). Please study the event of Ghadir Khum in the commentary of verse
67 of this surah.

Ahmad ibn Hanbal, the founder of Hanbali sect, writes in his Musnad that a
Jew had told the second caliph: If there were a similar declaration in the
Pentateuch, the Jews would have celebrated the day as a great festival.

This verse is also a clear testimony to the perfection of the religion of
Islam. Please refer to the commentary of al-Fatehah: 7.

God has completed and perfected Islam only when, under His command (Maedah:
67), the Holy Prophet had announced the imamat of Ali after the termination
of resalat - he being the last messenger of God. Fakhruddin Razi has said
that the Holy Prophet died 81 or 82 days after the revelation of this verse.
All authorities agree that no law-giving verse was revealed after this
verse. So without believing in Ali as the immediate successor of the Holy
Prophet, according to this verse, the faith is neither complete nor perfect.
The institution of imamat is necessary to keep intact the final word of God
(the Quran) and to guide mankind unto the right path till the day of
resurrection.

As verse 67 of this surah is inevitably connected with this verse, please
study its commentary very carefully. To avoid repetition, all the
historical, logical and rational arguments with authentic references
pertaining to the imamah of Ali and his descendants mentioned in verse 67
of this surah have not been related here. This verse should be read as an
immediate corollary of verse 67 of this surah.

This fact stands confirmed by a large number of non-Shiah scholars,
therefore, if any tradition contrary to this fact is narrated by Bukhari and
Muslim, based upon diplomacy and political pressures, should be reviewed in
the light of the bias and hostility they, and men like them, display
whenever they deal with the merits of the Ahlul-Bayt. Please refer to
Peshawar Nights, a well-known book published by Pir Muhammad Ibrahim Trust
and Zahra Publications.

In the first verse of this surah it is said: Verily God commands whatsoever
He intends. So there is no sense in questioning the will of God if He
intermingles various issues in any chapter, or in one verse, or two closely
connected verses, or passages are placed away from each other. This
arrangement was made by the Holy Prophet in his own lifetime. Please refer
to Genuineness of the Quran (by Agha Mahdi Pouya) in this book.

Agha Mahdi Pouya says:

After islama dina, fa, in faman, connects its following clause to the
prohibitory clause preceding al-yawma to islama dina, making the two
clauses in al-yawma to islama dina parenthetical. In its esoteric
significance fa may be connected with the immediately preceding clauses to
mean that Islam in its true form is that which was made known at Ghadir Khum
in pursuance of verse 67 of this surah.

Ghadir: The Day of Salvation of Mankind

Oh Messenger! Proclaim what has been revealed from your Lord, if you do not
do it, then you have not discharged your mission, and Allah will protect you
from the (evil of) people. Holy Quran 5:67

On 18th Dhul-Hejjah in 10 AH, Prophet Muhammad (S), while returning to
Madinah from his farewell Hajj pilgrimage and shortly after parting ways at
Johfah with pilgrims that had come from different directions of the Arabian
Peninsula, was suddenly stopped in the scorching sands beside a pond (Ghadir
in Arabic) in the obscure place called Khum by the emissary of God,
Archangel Gabriel, who brought the above verse. As is clear from the wording
of the ayah there was urgency in the matter. The divine tone was rather
unusual and stern to the person whom God refers in the Holy Quran as Mercy
to the creation.

It was reassuring as well, as is clear from the Lords promise in the last
part of the ayah to protect the Last and Greatest of Prophets from the evil
of mankind. It means people were averse to follow whatever the Prophet
preached and could easily veer off the track in pursuit of selfish
tendencies in absence of divine authority. After the Seal of Prophets no
divine messenger would ever come since the All-Wise Creator had decreed
Islam as the universal faith for all humanity with emphasis on the dynamism
of the Quran, whose timeless wisdom was designed to cater to all aspects of
mankinds needs even anticipating ideas and progress in scientific and other
spheres. Still the mission of the Messenger was not quite complete.

Obviously there was something vital, which needed public proclamation in
view of the fact that Prophet Muhammad (S) was God-sent and was not someone
who had been chosen to guide and reform society by the Arabs, the majority
of whom until recently were fiercely opposed to his mission because of the
residue of polytheism that lingered in most minds and prevented them from
understanding the dynamics of monotheism. Prophet Muhammad (S) never
speaks, but it is revelation revealed, says God in Surat an-Najm (Holy
Quran 53).

Without an iota of doubt this is confirmation of the Prophets every single
word by the One and Only Creator, Who among other things reminds humanity in
the Holy Book about the creation of Adam and his appointment as vicegerent
(khalifah) on earth with explicit orders for angels and the until then
obedient genie Iblis, to prostrate to the first ever man. The Quran then
tells us that all prostrated except Iblis who was cast out as the Satan for
having disobeyed divine commandment by resorting to the warped reasoning of
his fallible mind.

The Quran cautions us against the seditious whispers of the ever-deceiving
devil - granted respite by the All-Wise in order to test the faith of the
children of Adam, whether they heed divine decrees or are misled by satanic
reasoning. We read in the Holy Quran the prayer of Prophet Abraham (AS)
after being appointed by God as Imam (Leader of Mankind) to keep this
divinely ordained authority among his descendants. Prompt comes the reply
that the imamate will never reach oppressors (of all kinds and various
degrees even if it means living a part of life in ignorance of Gods
commandments) We also read in the Holy Quran the prayer of Prophet Moses
(AS) to God to make Aaron his legatee, a request that was granted since
deputizing for the Prophet needs divine decree and not the choice of people
who could be easy swayed by that avowed enemy of humanity, the Satan.

The heavenly scripture then mentions how Satan deceived the Israelites (just
delivered from the tyranny of Pharaoh) to ignore the divine appointee Aaron
and worship the golden calf in a democratic manner during the absence of
Moses (AS) who was in meditation on Mount Sinai. We are also informed by God
that it was He Who sent Prophet Jesus (AS) to guide the lost sheep of Israel
but the treacherous Israelites ganged up against the Messiah in violation of
divine commandments. Thus in view of these realities, the express
commandment to Prophet Muhammad (S) to stop then and there in his tracks in
the wilderness on 18th Dhul-Hejjah and proclaim a very important matter
(more significant than prayer, fasting, zakat and other forms of worship
that need no urgency). Moreover barely nine days ago the Prophet in his
memorable sermon at Jabal ar-Rahmah (Mount of Mercy) in the plain of Arafat
during the Hajj had informed the huge multitude that his days in the world
were numbered and in order to prevent the ummah from going astray after him
he was leaving behind amongst it the Thaqalayn (two weighty things).

Although he specified these two as the Holy Quran and his progeny the
Ahlul-Bayt, still a sort of ambiguity prevailed as to which person actually
had the God-approved authority to be in charge of mankinds affairs.
Certainly, it is against the principle of Divine Justice to leave people
groping in the dark. Thus in obedience to Gods commandment and after
receiving assurance of safety from evildoers, Prophet Muhammad (S) recalled
all those who had parted ways some hours earlier and waited for those who
lagged still behind. At midday (in broad daylight) amongst a 140,000 strong
gathering, he proclaimed those memorable words: Man kuntu Mawlah fahadha
Aliyun Mawlah (For whomsoever I am Master, this Ali is his Master).

This was in fact a official declaration of all that he had formally and
informally said about the prime position after him of his dear cousin Imam
Ali ibn Abi Taleb (AS) right from the day 23 years ago in Makkah when the
barely 10-year old lad had stood up to voice support for his divine mission
as the Prophet while the rest of the Arab gathering had mocked at him. The
Day of Ghadir is thus a vital link in the chain of divine authority
(wilayat) from Adams proclamation as khalifah to the promised advent of
Imam al-Mahdi (AS) to establish the global government of justice, and
ensures adherence to Gods Will, without which mankind is liable to fall
into the dark abyss of Saqifah and all other democratically disguised
devilish plots to confound the fate of humanity by that avowed enemy of
mankind, the Satan.

That was the reason that God swiftly sent Gabriel again that day with the
tidings - amidst the greetings of the Prophets companions bakhin bakhin
laka Ya Ali (congratulations to you Oh Ali), you are our Master and the
Master of all true believers (Amir al-Momenin):
Today I have completed your religion for you, chosen Islam as your faith
and perfected My favours upon you. (Holy Quran 5:3)

Eid al-Ghadir: Congratulations on the Delightful Occasion, Perfection of
Religion

This was the same day when Prophet Moses (AS) defeated the magicians and
appointed Joshua son of Noun as his wasi, while Jesus Christ (AS) appointed
Simon. Nimrods pyre (lighted in bid to burn Abraham (AS) became cool and
safe for Prophet Abraham (AS).

In this day Holy Prophet Muhammad (S) connected relation of brotherhood
among His companions.

It is the Eid of Aale Muhammad (AS) and is known as Eid al-Mooud in the
heavens.

It is reported that people asked Imam Jafar as-Sadeq (AS). Is there any
Eid for a Muslim other than Friday, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha? He (AS)
replied: yes, there is an Eid which bears great status among these three
Eids. People again questioned: which one is that Eid?

Imam answered:
That is Eid al-Ghadir, it is the day when Holy Prophet Muhammad (S)
appointed Imam Ali ibn Abi Taleb (AS) his (S) successor in Ghadir Khum
after revelation of 67th verse of Surat al-Maedah: Oh Apostle, proclaim
what is revealed to you from your Lord, if you dont, you will not have
conveyed his message.

By saying:
Ali (AS) is mawla (master) of all those, of whom I am master.

And after this proclamation third verse of Surat al-Maedah (table) was
revealed:
This day I have perfected your religion for you and completed my favour to
you. I have chosen Islam to be your faith (din).

A hadith of Imam ar-Ridha (AS) goes: Allah forgives sins of 60 years of
every believer on this day. So show kindness to your brothers in Islam and
make them please.

Following are some amal of the day:

1- Keeping fast; as it is equal to hundred pilgrimages (Hajj) and hundred
off-seasonal pilgrimages (umrah) in reward.

2- Take bath

3- Wearing new dress

4- Recite Ziyarat al-Amir al-Momenin Ali (AS) (three ziyarat of this day
have been reported. One of them is Ziyarat Aminullah)

5- Offer two rakaat prayer before half on hour to zawal time [when the sun
reaches its zenith (midway point)], because it was the time when Holy
Prophet Muhammad appointed Ali (AS) as his (S) successor.

In each rakaat after recitation of Surat Hamd following surahs should be
recited:
Surat al-Ikhlas - 10 times
Ayat al-Kursi - 10 times
Surat al-Qadr - 10 times

This prayer, which is equal to one hundred thousand pilgrimages (hajj) one
hundred thousand off-seasonal pilgrimages (umrah) in reward, is also a
source of fulfillment of all needs in this world and hereafter

6- Recite Dua an-Nudbah

7- And express greetings in these words:

Praise is for Allah who has made me from among those who stick fast to the
walayat of Amir al-Momenin and the Aemmah (AS).

Location of Ghadir Khum

Ghadir Khum is located between Makkah and Madinah in the vicinity of
al-Johfah. It was the place where pilgrims (hujjaj) from different provinces
would part company and take different routes for their respective homes.

The Greatest Eid of All Religions

Today I have perfected your religion and completed my favour upon you, and
I was satisfied that Islam be your religion. (The Holy Quran, 5:3)

Eid al-Ghadir, which is known as Eid al-Akbar (the greatest Eid) in
Islamic narrations, could be referred to as the greatest celebration (Eid)
of all religions. For the result of the mission of all the messengers of
Allah became accomplished on this day. When Prophet Nuh (Noah) (AS) was
appointed, he introduced his people to his religion and told them: Allah
has called upon you to have faith in this religion; however, there shall be
a Prophet after me whose religion is more perfect than mine, so have faith
in him and be aware that the most perfect religion will be brought by the
last prophet. Similar to that, Ibrahim (AS) (Abraham), Musa (AS) (Moses),
Isa (Jesus) (AS) were appointed and they gradually made the religion more
perfect, and they spoke of the most perfect religion, the one brought by the
last prophet.

Now, Islam has been brought to people and the religion has reached its most
perfect state, and the mission of all Allahs messengers is manifested in
Islam. Prophet Muhammad (S) has established Islam within 23 years of
enormous endeavours, and has conveyed brotherhood and equality amongst all
the Muslims.

Now, he is preparing to visit the house of Allah, and he has called upon all
Muslims, no matter what their race or tribe is, to join him in performing
Hajjat al-Wedaa (farewell pilgrimage), his last pilgrimage. People were
accompanying Prophet Muhammad (S) in performing the Hajj rituals and
meanwhile, they heard the last words of him.

On Thursday, 18th of Dhul-Hejjah (10 March 632), the Prophet (S) arrived at
Ghadir Khum. (Ghadir is a watershed and Khum means pool) the name of a pond
that forms because of rain. Ghadir is 3-4 kilometres away from Johfah and
Johfah is 64 kilometres away from Makkah. Johfah is a center in which people
of Egypt, Medina, Iraq and Damascus begin the path toward their own cities.
Ghadir Khum was a place for pilgrims to rest a short while with the trees
and water, but the weather was extremely hot and they wouldnt stay long.
Gabriel comes down to Prophet Muhammad (S) saying: Oh Messenger! Proclaim
what has been revealed to you from your Lord. Prophet Muhammad (S) was
worried about the reaction of some of his companions since he was aware of
their hypocrisy through revelation (2).

Prophet Muhammad (S), the mercy upon mankind, was worried about the ailing
hearts and weak faith of new Muslims. As he was looking for a solution,
Gabriel came down for the third time: Oh Messenger! Proclaim what has been
revealed to you from your Lord, for if you do it not you have not conveyed
His message and Allah will protect you from the (evil designs of) people.
(3)

What is this message that if not proclaimed, the Prophets mission would not
be conveyed? Prophet Muhammad (S), who possesses both the states of
Prophethood and Imamate, is addressed as Oh Messenger! which reveals that
his state of Prophethood is beleaguered. On the other hand, the phrase you
have not conveyed His message indicates that not proclaiming this message
would result in not having accomplished the duty of Prophethood.

In the following section of the verse, Allah assures Prophet Muhammad (S) by
saying that: Allah will protect you from the (evil designs of) people.
Here protection does not mean to address physical, financial protection;
because Prophet Muhammad (S) never felt fear during the battles, and his
lifes history testifies that he never stood back even a single step in the
battles.

Even in the battle of Uhud, when the Muslims were seemingly defeated and
their army was collapsed, Prophet Muhammad (S) was still fighting against
the pagans. In addition to that, Allah describes not only Prophet Muhammad
(S), but also other prophets as: those who proclaim the messages of Allah
and have fear in Him, and have fear in no one but Allah. Therefore, Prophet
Muhammads (S) fear was about damages to the religion and the ignorance of
people; hence, the good tidings by Allah were about the victory over the
ignorance of people, just like as he told Prophet Moses (AS): Fear not; you
are the superior).

At noon, the Prophet (S) performed the prayer with a great population of
Muslims at that area in the terrible hot weather. The burning hot weather
forced people to place part of their garment on their heads and some under
their feet to protect it from the burning stones on the ground. They also
put a piece of cloth on the branches of the old trees to make a barrier for
the Prophet (S) against the hot sunshine. When the prayer was finished,
there was a pulpit prepared from the camel saddles, in which the Prophet (S)
ascended to give his famous sermon. To make sure all the people heard what
the prophet said, some of the followers repeated the Prophets (S) sermon.

A part of the sermon is stated: Thanks and praise is exclusively for Allah
and we seek help from Him, have faith in Him, and seek protection to Him
from our desires and wrong doings. The Lord in which if misleads people, no
one will be able to lead, and whom if leads, no one can mislead. I profess
that other than God, no other is worshipped and Muhammad is the slave and
the messenger of Him. Oh People, the merciful and the aware Lord informed me
that I too will be called (toward Allah) and I will respond (His
invitation). I will be responsible and you too will be responsible. So what
would you say (regarding my invitation and responsibility)?

Those present answered, We witness that you communicated your Prophethood,
worked hard, and warned us. We wish that Allah will give good reward to
  you.
The Prophet said, Do you not witness that there is no worthy of worship but
Allah, and Muhammad (S) is His servant and Messenger? (And do you not
witness that) the heaven and hell of Allah is true, death is true, the day
of Judgement will arrive without doubt, and (that) Allah will raise those
who are in the graves?

The audience said, Yes, Oh Messenger of Allah, we witness. The Prophet (S)
then continued and asked the people, Do you hear my speech? The audience
replied, Yes, Oh Messenger of Allah.

Then the Prophet (S) said: I will attend the Pond (of Kawthar) before you
and you will meet me beside there. The width of this pool is from Bosra (a
city near Damascus) to Sanaa (a city in Yemen). Within, there are silver
cups as much as the stars in the sky. So see how you will treat Thaqalayn
(Two weighty things) after me.

At that time, someone said: Oh, Prophet! What do you mean by Thaqalayn?
Prophet Muhammad (S) said: The greater weight is the Book of Allah (holy
Quran). A part of it is in the hand of Allah and the other part is in your
hands. If you hold on to it (and use its guidance) you will not deviate.

The other weight and smaller is my Progeny. The All-Aware Subtle Allah
informed me that these two weights will not separate until they meet me by
the Pond of Kawthar, and I wished this from Allah. So dont exceed from
these two for you will perish and do not fall behind from these two for you
will perish.

Then Prophet Muhammad (S) raised Imam Alis (AS)) hands so that all people
could see Him, Prophet Muhammad (S) asked to the people: Oh People am I not
prior and superior to you than yourselves?
People replied: Yes, Oh Messenger of Allah!
Prophet (S) continued: Oh People! Surely Allah is my Master, and I am the
Master of all believers. Then he said: He of whom I am the Master (Mawla),
of him Ali is the Master (Mawla). He repeated this sentence 3 times. Then
he said: Oh God! Be the friend of him who is His friend and be enemy of him
who is enemy to Him. Help those who help Him. Forsake those who forsake
  Him.
Then the Prophet (S) addressed the people: Oh people! Tell this message to
those who are not present.

Before the crowd scattered, Gabriel descended again and revealed this verse:
Today I have perfected your religion and completed my bounty upon you, and
I was satisfied that Islam be your religion.

Prophet Muhammad (S) then said: Allah is the great, upon the accomplishment
of the religion, completion of the blessings, and satisfaction with my
prophet hood and Alis (AS) wilayat. After that, people congratulated Imam
Ali (AS). Abu Bakr and Umar were of those who congratulated him before the
other companions. Umar repeatedly told Imam Ali (AS): Well done ibn Abu
Taleb. You have become Master of me and every believing man and woman.

Prophet Muhammad (S) stops at a place called Ghadir. He summons those who
have gone forward to return and wait for the followers to join. Them, he
climbs an eminence and gives a sermon:

Praise be to Allah; I testify that He is the Lord and I am His servant.
Gabriel has descended to me thrice, and has ordered me from Allah to stop on
this land to proclaim His message. Am I not your Wali (more precious to you
than your own lives)? People replied: Yes. He continued: Am I not your
prophet and leader? Again, all the people confirmed. It was then that he
took Ali ibn Abi Talebs (AS) hands and raised them high, and said,
Whoever has me as his Master (Wali), Ali is his Master (Wali).

After that, those that were present came to Ali (AS) at the tent which
Prophet Muhammad (S) had ordered to be set up, and congratulated him on his
new position. They addressed him as Amir al-Momenin (Ruler of the Faithful).
Historians have mentioned numbers up to 120000 for the people present at
that time.

Then, the following verse of the Quran was revealed: Today, those who
disbelieve have despaired of your religion; so fear them not and fear Me.
Today I have perfected for you your religion and have completed My favour
upon you, and I was satisfied that Islam be your religion. (6)

In the Holy Quran, the terms Yawm and Yawmaidhin usually refer to the
resurrection day; however, the former is used in this verse referring to the
issue of Imamate. Since the Holy Quran starts talking about important issues
with the terms al- and Yawm, it is indicated that the aforementioned
verse, in which the term al-Yawm is repeated twice, contains important
news. That important news is indeed appointing the Master and Ruler of the
Muslim community after Prophet Muhammad (S).

This important event made the disbelievers disappointed. The enemies of
Islam would say: we are waiting to see him die (7), so his religion
would be removed; because it is possible to fight against the book and the
law and to interpret them according to ones desires; however, such divine
Leader could not be fought.

Therefore, the event of Ghadir made the disbelievers despair of this hope
due to the fact that a leader was appointed for the Muslims who possessed
virtues such as bravery, wisdom, patience and constancy, just like Prophet
Muhammad (S). There, a divine successor was appointed by Allah to continue
Prophets path and supervise the Muslims after Prophet Muhammad (S).

The next section of the verse talks about perfection of religion and
completion of favour. Obviously, it does not refer to materialistic favours,
because the creatures are constantly blessed by such favours from Allah, and
they are not such that could be completed; hence, another type of favour
(which is indeed superior to and more important than materialistic favours)
is meant.

According to the event of Ghadir, this favour is nothing but the favour of
Imamat (Leadership) and Wilayat (Mastership). Even Allah has admired the
favour of Prophet hood and Imamat as His greatest favours in the Holy Quran,
and has used the term Minnah (a significant and enormous favour which is
difficult to receive and maintain) regarding these two favours: Certainly
Allah conferred a great favour upon the believers when He raised among them
a Messenger from amongst themselves. (8); And We desired to bestow a great
favour upon those who were deemed weak in the land, and to make them the
Imam, and to make them the inheritors.(9)

And finally, the endeavours of all the Prophets before Islam and the 23 year
endeavours of Prophet Muhammad (S) became fruitful on the day of Ghadir, and
the argument on mankind became complete.

It is noteworthy that according to the knowledge of Hadith, there are few
events reported to be as authentic as the event of Ghadir. Masoud ibn Naser
Sejestani in the book Velayatkadeh, which is printed in seventeen volumes,
narrates this event on the authority of one hundred twenty people. Muhammad
ibn Jarir Tabari in the book Radd Alaa al-Kharqouziyah, narrates the
event of Ghadir from seventy-five different routes, and ibn Ouqdah mentions
125 different narrators for this Hadith in the book of Wilayat.

It is quoted from Abu al-Maali Jowni that: I saw a book in a bookbinding
store which contained the Hadith of Ghadir, and it was written on its back:
Volume 28 of the routes for the Hadith of Man Kuntu Mawlah (the beginning
phrase of the Hadith of Ghadir which means whoever has me as Master).
Sayyed Murtadha writes that: We have not come up to a single Islamic sect
that denies the event of Ghadir. Finally, the book of al-Ghadir by Allamah
Amini is the most general and complete encyclopedia for narrations about the
Ghadir event.

Based on the above, it is on us to celebrate this great Eid. There is a
Hadith in Sahih Muslim narrating from Tareq ibn Shahab that: A group of
Jews told the second Caliph that:
If such a verse had been revealed to us (Today I have perfected for you your
religion and have completed my favour upon you) and we knew that day it had
been revealed, We would have celebrated that day.

Irreconcilable Days

What is hard work and effort? What really matters is luck! Effort,
knowledge, art, science and physical power mean nothing! Luck is what gets
things done and not brain power. If youre lucky, then theres nothing
competency or expertise can do for you. But whatever bad happens, it is on a
cursed day. Damn these days

Now if we asked the people who said these words, Could you please define
luck? Perhaps you can explain what luck is or you might have felt it in
your life. They are not likely to have an answer.

Hasan ibn Masoud narrates, I came to visit my master Abul-Hasan al-Hadi
(AS). In that day I had experienced a number of difficult incidents; my
finger was wounded and I had an accident with a horse rider that caused a
severe injury to my shoulder; in addition I had an unexpected argument which
had caused my clothing to tear. So when I saw Imam al-Hadi (AS), I told him
in sorrow, What a cursed day! May Allah (SWT) protect me from the distress
of this day! Imam al-Hadi (AS) said, Oh Hasan! What are you saying? You
are with us and yet you put the fault of your own sins on other things!

Hasan ibn Masoud says, I came to myself once I heard Imams words and
realized my mistake. I replied, My master! I said wrongly and I repent to
Allah (SWT). Imam al-Hadi (AS) continued, Oh Hasan! What has days done
wrong, so that whenever you are being punished for what you sinned, they get
the blame of your wrong doing. Hasan ibn Masoud continues, Oh Son of the
great Prophet! I will repent forever and shall never associate the
reflection of my deeds to days and time (1)

As we can observe in this narration from Imam al-Hadi (AS), one of the
causes of difficult incidents in life is our own inappropriate actions. In
this narration the Imam (AS) emphasizes on the fact that considering some
days as a cursed time (i.e. being out of luck) will not only help anyone at
all, but also Allah (SWT) will reproach that person for, why she/he is
placing the fault on an innocent element of this universe.

Further, there is a difference between one who believes in that man can
have nothing but what he strives for (2) and the one who does not believe
in effort and hard work. How different are these two group of people: one
who believes surely Allah does not change the condition of a people until
they change their own condition (3) and one who believes in luck.

(The above is a selection from Collection of Works of Late Scholar Murtadha
Motahhari, vol. 23 and 25, with little changes)

Roshd website congratulates all Muslims and especially you dear friend, upon
15th of Dhul-Hejjah, the birthday anniversary of the tenth heavenly leader
and Imam, Imam Ali ibn Muhammad al-Hadi (AS).

33:4 God has not made for any man two hearts within him; nor has He made
your wives whose backs you liken to the backs of your mothers as your
mothers, nor has He made those whom you assert to be your sons your real
sons; these are the words of your mouths; and God speaks the truth and He
guides to the way.

Agha Mahdi Pouya and Mir Ahmad Alis Commentary: 33:4:

Two hearts in one breast means two inconsistent attitudes: serving God and
His prophet and also subscribing to the theories and actions of the
disbelievers and the hypocrites.

Such a phenomenon is against Gods command and will.

Imam Ali ibn Abi Taleb said:
The love of the Ahlul-Bayt can never coexist with allegiance to their
enemies, because there are not two hearts in one breast. He who is a friend
of our enemies is not our friend, even if he claims to be attached with us,
nor do we accept him as our ally and follower.

Imam Jafar ibn Muhammad as-Sadeq said:
If the heart of a person is wrapped up in the fascination of anything other
than the presence of God at the time of prayer he is to be considered as
worshipping that thing, not God.

Abu Mumur Jamil ibn Uwaris, an idol worshipper of Makkah, was known among
the disbelievers as the man with two hearts because he claimed that on
account of his vast knowledge and wisdom he could understand men and matters
more clearly and correctly than the Holy Prophet; but after the battle of
Badr, while running away from the battlefield Abu Sufyan noticed that he had
one of his shoes in his hand to which fact he drew his attention. Abu Mumur
realized his folly because all the time he was thinking that both the shoes
were on his feet. Then the myth of his two hearts in one breast was broken
and people came to know that he was an ordinary man.

In the market of Akkaz, Zayd ibn Hareth was being sold as a slave. The Holy
Prophet purchased him and adopted him as his son. The father of Zayd was a
man of means. When he came to know that his kidnapped son was sold as a
slave, he approached Abu Taleb to obtain the freedom of Zayd from his
nephew. The Holy Prophet at once set him free and gave him permission to go
with his father, but Zayd decided to remain with the Holy Prophet. The Holy
Prophet asked the people to bear witness that from that day Zayd was his son
and he was his father. Then he married his cousin Zaynab, a very beautiful
young woman, to Zayd. It so happened that they could not live happily
together. Zayd divorced Zaynab. To save Zaynab from the misery of a divorcee
God commanded the Holy Prophet to marry Zaynab. According to pagan formula
when a man wanted to get rid of his wife without making her free to remarry,
he simply said to her: You are to me as the back of my mother. Likewise an
adopted son was treated as a natural son. It was this crudity of the pagan
morals that, upon the Holy Prophets marrying the divorced wife of his freed
man Zayd, who was also his adopted son, gave rise to a great deal of hostile
criticism. Islam abolished these widespread foolish customs. In Islam,
according to verse 23 of an-Nesa, those who have been wives of your sons
proceeding from your loins are within the prohibited degrees of marriage,
and this does not apply to adopted sons. Adoption in the technical sense is
not allowed in Muslim law.

Agha Mahdi Pouya says:

If there is absolute submission to the will of God in the heart of a man,
there cannot be any room for ghayrullah (other than God) in it.

On 18th Dhilhajj of the year 10 A.H. (10 March 632 CE) ,After completing
the last pilgrimage the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) along with the Muslims set out
of Makkah. On their way back the Muslims reached a place called
Ghadir-e-khumm. The following verse was revealed to the Holy
Prophet(S.A.W.): " O Apostle! Deliver what has been sent down to you from
your Lord; and if you don't do it, you have not delivered His message (at
all); and Allah will protect you from the people ..." (Quran 5:67)

*Delivery of the sermon:*

On receiving the above verse, the Holy Prophet (saww) stopped at that very
place called Ghadir-e-khumm.

The following is a part of the lengthy speech of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)
which has also been narrated by all the muslim authorities repeatedly:

"It seems the time has approached when I shall be called away (by Allah) and
I shall answer that call. I am leaving for you two precious things and if
you adhere to them both, you will never go astray after me. They are the
Book of Allah and my Progeny, that is my Ahlul Bayt. The two shall never
separate from each other until they come to me by the Pool (of Paradise)."
Then the Holy Prophet (pbuh) in an attempt to remind Muslims of his own
authority over them said: " Do I not have more right over the believers than
what they have over themselves? " Muslims answered unanimously " Yes, O'
Messenger of God ". This served as a stepping stone for the announcement of
his hier and vicegerent. The Holy Prophet(pbuh) held out the hand of Ali(as)
and said: " For whoever I am his Leader (mawla), 'Ali is his Leader
(mawla)." The Holy Prophet then continued to say: " O' God, love those who
love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him." *..click here

those who have been given all that which was promised to them, and have been
tied together with the bonds of contract to have full confidence in the
authority of the guardians of the religious laws who established justice;
and did not disgrace us to be among those who know better but deny the truth
and treat the Day of Judgement as a false fable.

In the name of Allah, The Beneficent, The Merciful
[image: bismi]
O Allah I beseech Thee (alone), because, verily, to Thee belongs (all)
praise; Thou art Single, has no partner, One, Unique, eternally besought
Independent, neither begets, nor begotten, and there is none comparable unto
Thee; and Muhammad is Thy servant and Messenger, Thy blessings be on him and
on his children.
O He who, every day, exercises (universal) power, so (it was) under Thy
mandate I was taken care of, and because of which I am among those who
receive Thy response, follow thy religion, and call Thee (alone).
Thou assisted me like this right from the day I was born, through Thy
favours, generosity and kindness, thereafter, Thy favours followed one
another in succession, and likewise, also Thy rewards and mercy, in such a
manner that Thou, again and again, kept (the uninterrupted flow of favours,
rewards and bounties) reactivated since my birth.
May be I was slow, forgetful, neglectful, careless and indolent, but Thou
completed Thy favours, and always thought of me in this connection (granting
of favours), bestowed them on me, directed me into their direction, so by
Thy power it is as it should be O my God, Master, and Lord, Thou brought
(Thy favours) to fullness, did not withdraw (any blessing), till I breathed
my last amid those (advantages), Thou was pleased with me, verily Thou art
the worthiest of all who grant favours, and it is Thou who perfected Thy
bounties for me.
O Allah we paid attention, obeyed, and responded to Thy call, (and it was
also Thy favour to us) therefore, praise is for Thee (alone), we seek Thy
pardon O our Lord, and unto Thee we shall return. We believe in "One Allah
who has no partner", and in His Messenger, Muhammad, blessings of Allah be
on him and on his children.
We stand up for and comply with Allah's command, and follow the example of
the Messenger in the matter of Love and friendship to our "Mawlaa" and
"Mawlaa" of the believers, the commander of the faithfuls, Ali ibna abi
Taalib, the servant of Allah, the brother of His Messenger, the renowned
truthful, the decisive argument over mankind, through whom, the Almighty
helped and supported His Prophet and His manifest true religion, the sign
(pattern) of the divine system of life, approved by Allah, the all-aware
custodian of His wisdom, the repository (being absorbed by the
contemplation) of transcendental things, the depository of Allah's secrets,
the confidant whom Allah trusted wholly with the affairs of all that which
has been created by Him, the witness who bore witness to Him in the midst of
His creation.
O Allah, our Lord - Nourisher, verily we have heard a "crier" calling unto
faith: "Believe you in your Lord!" So we believed.
Our Lord! Therefore forgive us our sins, and remit from us our evil deeds,
and make us die the death of the righteous.
Our Lord! And give us that which Thou has promised to us by Thy Messengers,
confound us not on the Day of Judgement, verily, Thou does not break the
tryst (promise to answer him who prays).
So, O our Lord, it was Thy kindness and a favour that we acted in answer to
Thy call and do exactly as Thy Messenger did, taking his words as true,
which proves our belief that (Ali) is the "Mawlaa" of (all) the believers:
and we also denied and rejected "Jibt" and "Taghoot", the idols representing
ignorance and let he (Ali) be our "most loving guardian", acceptance of
whose authority (wilayat) has distinguished us, and raise us on the occasion
of "the last judgement" in the company of our Imams' for this reason we
believe in them, rely on them, and obey them.
Whether alone, or in public, we are certain of them; (we have total faith in
them) under all circumstances, in their absence, during their lifetime, in
the event of their death.
We are happy to have them as our guides and leaders, they are sufficient
for us as a link between us and Allah, in exclusion of others, we do not
accept any one in exchange as their substitute, nor take to any one, except
them, for intimate friendship.
We turn to Allah, disassociating ourselves from the group of men and jinn
who carried on hostilities against them in every age. We deny and reject
Jibt, Taghoot and the four idols, (and condemn) their henchmen and their
followers, and every one, man or jin, who at any time, till eternity,
patronize them (the idols),
O Allah we request Thee to be our witness that we were upright and firm in
religion in the light of that which Muhammad and his children had set forth,
blessings of Allah be on him and on them; our opinion agrees with that which
they declared reasonable, our approach to religion is exactly the same which
they taught by practice, whatever they said we say, we cherish that which
they held dear, we deny that which they denied, we are fond of whomsoever
they loved, we hold as an enemy whomsoever they opposed, we condemn
whomsoever they censured, we detest whomsoever they disliked, we are kind to
whomsoever they treated with kindness.
We believe in, submit to, agree with, and follow in the footsteps of our
masters, blessings of Allah be on them,
O Allah keep us in this condition for ever, never withdraw it from us, let
it stay stable with us, not as a passing phase. Keep us alive always in this
manner so far we are kept alive, make us die likewise when the time comes:
"Aali Muhammad", our Imams, so following them as an example, befriending
them only, being hostile to their enemies, who in fact are Thy enemies,
therefore, let us be with them, in this world and in the Hereafter, and be
among the favourites, because this alone will given us happiness, O the Most
Merciful of all who show mercy!

At the very outset we are but faced with a stark reality. We are compelled
to ask ourselves two questions. What status did Islam want the Muslims to
achieve? What status have the Muslims actually achieved? The answer to the
first question is comparatively much easy to digest. Three times does the
Holy Quran repeats: "He it is who sent His apostle with guidance and the
religion of truth, that he might cause it to prevail over all
religions..."(9:33, 48:28, 61:9). Also the Holy Quran enunciates: "Surely
the land is Allah’s; He causes such of His servants to inherit it as He
pleases " (7:128) But the answer to the second question hits the belly - and
indeed hits it hard. Today’s Muslim does not stand anywhere near victory.
Success reaches every house but somehow manages to escape the thresholds of
Muslims. The parable of the Muslim is that of a football. Being kicked from
one end to another. Some do kick to get material benefits. Majority are the
people who seek pure entertainment by being the spectators and at times the
cheerleaders. This reality slaps, smack, on our faces.

The somberness of this fact burns our hearts. It persuades us to do the
much-needed research in order to comprehend the underlying fundamentals to
this stark variation - What the Quran explicitly mentions to what we observe
in the socio-political transnational personality of the contemporary Muslim.
In this research to pursue the reality we must promise ourselves to uphold
and follow the genuine research 'wherever it leads to'. Pursuit for truth
without the sincere intent and the firm resolve has no meaning. Before we
venture out in the realm of sincere research and quest for truth we take
caution and endeavor to improve our resolve with these words " There are few
nudities so objectionable as the naked truth - Agnes Repplier. Further we
sincerely pray that we take our faith seriously and not to be included in
those who have been mentioned with the words " He wears his faith but as the
fashion of his hat - William Shakespeare. We take courage in these words "
All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to
discover them - Galileo Galilei (1564 - 1642). And also " Truth is generally
the best vindication against slander - Abraham Lincoln.

Let us first analyze where did the Muslims go wrong in their vast history
presently spread over more than 14 centuries. Where did the first falsehood
creep into the history of the Muslims? We will not leave any stone unturned
and any page unread to locate this falsehood and ultimately eliminate it.
There are two ways to this analysis. One is we initiate from the
contemporary to the life of the Holy Prophet( S.A.W.). Second is we initiate
from the life of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) to the contemporary. We know that
if there is a falsehood in the past then it multiplies with time, therefore,
we take the second option, starting from the life of the Holy Prophet
(S.A.W.) to the present. It would have been an increasingly ardous affair to
analyze the complex form of the falsehood in the recent times without
analyzing the comparatively bare and raw form of the falsehood in the
previous times. When we mention ' bare form of the falsehood ' we definitely
have taken great pains in comprehending what a 'falsehood' means and
implies. This indicates that there do exists different forms of falsehood.
There are 2 kinds of falsehoods. One is in its bare status, which is in its
nascent elementary form, and the other is the falsehood garbed with truth
that is the complicated form. The Holy Quran says: " Do not mix the truth
with the falsehood "(2:42). In this verse the Holy Quran exhorts the people
not to mix truth and falsehood together. Simply speaking, the Holy Quran
could have asked us to leave falsehood. But it is needless to mention here
that the Holy Quran wants to specify here the second form of falsehood that
is exceedingly dangerous than simple elementary form of falsehood. This
falsehood is the complex form of falsehood that is mixed with truth and is
perceived as truth at the outset. Only when a person ponders over the
reality of this he comes to understand that it is in reality a falsehood and
not truth. But the more simple minded people and those who do not ponder a
lot get hooked and start considering this falsehood as being the real form
of truth. These people start believing this complex form of falsehood as the
truth in such a way that they are more than willing to even sacrifice their
lives for this complex falsehood, of course, under the impression that this
is truth by itself. But even for such people it can rightly be said " Men
occasionally stumble over the truth, but most of them pick themselves up and
hurry off as if nothing ever happened " - Winston Churchill. There is
another group of people who are impure at heart. They are quite aware about
this complex falsehood and comprehend that this is falsehood but chooses to
stick by this falsehood rather than the truth. " I believe in looking at
reality straight in the eye and denying it " - Garrison Keillor.

Beginning from the life of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.), firstly, we are sure
that nothing went wrong in the time when the Holy Prophet ( S.A.W.) was
alive. Since we know very well that the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) was at the
helm of the affairs of the Muslims and no mistakes could be attributed to
the Holy Prophet( S.A.W.). It is sufficient to say that at least no Muslim
believes that the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) committed any mistake that ultimately
has caused such tragic oppressions of the Muslims. Also, the Holy Prophet
(S.A.W.) has received a certificate from Allah (S.W.T.) that he will not err
in the affairs of the Muslims in the following verses of the Holy Quran: "
Your companion does not err, nor does he go astray; Nor does he speak out of
desire. It is naught but a revelation that is revealed " ( 53: 2,3, & 4).
Also the Holy Quran certifies all his actions by asking everyone to follow
each and every action of his without any exception, this verse has been
repeated tens of times in the Holy Quran: " Obey Allah and obey the Prophet
" ( 3:32, 3:132, 4:59, 8:1, 8:20, 8:46). Our journey for seeking truth has
started from the life of the Holy Prophet and is supposed to ultimately
terminate at the contemporary. So the next stage which should not miss our
stringent perusal is the period immediately after the passing away of the
Holy Prophet ( S.A.W.).

Immediately after the passing away of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) we envisage
heavy differences taking place amongst the Muslims. We can proffer more than
40,000 instances displaying the terrible differences that had occurred after
the passing away of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.). But since the scope of this
document is highly limited, just to indicate the extent of differences
taking place after the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) it is sufficient to enunciate
the following 12 points:

1. Abu Ja'far Baladhuri Ahmad Bin Yahya Bin Jabir Baghdadi, one of reliable
traditionalists and historians according to the sunnis, writes in his
History that when Abu Bakr called Ali to swear allegiance, Ali refused. Abu
Bakr sent Umar who went with a torch to set fire to Ali's house. Fatima came
to the door and said: "O son of Khattab! Have you come to set my house on
fire?" He said: "Yes, this is more effective than anything your father did."

2. Sharhe Nahju'l-Balagha, Volume III, page 351. Ibn Abi'l-Hadid wrote that
he told his teacher, Abu Ja'far Naqib, that when the Prophet was told that
Hubbar Bin Aswad had attacked his daughter Zainab's litter with a lance,
because of which Zainab suffered a miscarriage, the Prophet allowed him to
be put to death. Abu Ja'far said: "Had the Prophet of Allah been alive, he
would have surely ordered the death penalty for him also who had frightened
Fatima so much that her child, Muhsin, died in miscarriage."

3. Hazrat Hussein (A.S.) the grandson of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) was
martyred along with his family members.

4. When Abdullah learned that, like other copies of the Holy Quran, his copy
had been burnt, he was much aggrieved. In social and religious gatherings,
he narrated the condemnatory hadith that he knew about Uthman. When this
news reached Uthman, he had Ibn Mas'ud so severely beaten by his slaves that
his teeth were broken, and he was confined to bed. After three days he
succumbed to his injuries. Ibn Abi'l-Hadid writes in detail about these
facts in Volume I, pages 67 and 226 of Sharh Nahju'l-Balagha (printed in
Egypt) under "Ta'n VI.

5. Ulema of both sects relate that when Umayyad oppression increased, some
companions of the Prophet wrote to Uthman, asking him to relent. They said
that if he continued to assist his cruel Umayyad Governors, he would not
only be harming Islam, but he would himself be subjected to serious
consequences. They asked Ammar Yasir to deliver the petition since Uthman
himself had acknowledged Ammar's virtue. They had often heard Uthman say
that the Prophet said that faith was blended with the flesh and blood of
Ammar. So Ammar took the letter to Uthman. When he arrived, Uthman asked
him, "Do you have business with me?" He replied: "I have no business of a
personal nature. But a group of the Prophet's Companions have written in
this letter some suggestions and advice for your welfare. They have sent
them to you through me." After reading a few lines, Uthman threw the letter
down. Ammar said: "It was not good of you. A letter from the companions of
the Holy Prophet of Allah deserves respect. Why did you throw it on the
ground? It would be proper for you to have read it and replied to it?" "You
are lying!" Uthman shouted. Then he ordered his slaves to beat him, and
Uthman himself kicked him in the stomach.

6. Uthman was also cruel to Jandab Bin Junada, known as Abu Dharr Ghifari,
one of the intimate companions of the Holy Prophet and a learned man. Great
traditionalists and historians of both sects have reported that this
ninety-year-old man was unjustly exiled from place to place with utmost
ignominy - from Medina to Syria, to Medina again, and then from Medina to
the desert of Rabza. He rode on a naked camel accompanied by his only
daughter. He died in Rabza in penury and neglect. Sunni prominent ulema and
historians, including, Ibn Sa'd, in his Tabaqat, Volume IV, page 168;
Bukhari in Sahih, Kitab-e-Zakat; Ibn Abi'l-Hadid in his Sharhe
Nahju'l-Balagha, Volume I, page 240 and Volume II, pages 375-87, Yaqubi in
his History, Volume II, page 148; Abu'l-Hasan Ali Bin Husain Mas'udi, the
famous traditionalist and historian of the fourth century in his
Muruju'dh-Dhahab, Volume I, page 438, and many others have recorded Uthman's
cruelty. It has been widely reported how he mistreated the pure-hearted Abu
Dharr, the loved one of the Holy Prophet, and also how Abdullah Bin Mas'ud,
the hafiz and recorder of Wahi, who was given forty lashes because he bid
farewell to Abu Dharr Ghifari. Insulting treatment was likewise shown to Ali
for the same reason.

7. The wife of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) came out to fight against the Holy
Imam Ali (A.S.).

8. Ayesha went to Basra. Uthman Bin Hanafi, a great companion of the Prophet
and governor of Basra appointed by Ali, was captured there. His hair and
beard were pulled out; he was tortured and driven out. More than 100
innocent, helpless Muslims were killed. Ibn Athir, Mas'udi, Muhammad Bin
Jarir Tabari, Ibn Abi'l-Hadid, and others have written in detail about this
event.

9. Abu'l-Faraj Ispahani in his Maqatilu't-Talibin, Ibn Abdu'l-Bar in his
Isti'ab, Mas'udi in his Isbatu'l-Wasiyya, and many other ulema have reported
that Asma Ju'da, by order and promise of Mu'awiya, gave poison to Abu
Muhammad Hasan Ibn Ali. Ibn Abdu'l-Bar and Muhammad Bin Jarir Tabari have
also reported that when Mu'awiya was informed of the passing away of the
holy imam, he shouted the takbir ("Allah is Great").

10. When Amr Bin As and Mu'awiya Bin Khadij conquered Egypt, the supply of
water was cut off to Muhammad Bin Abu Bakr. When he had nearly died of
thirst, he was killed. He was then enclosed in the skin of an ass and the
bundle was thrown into a fire. When Mu'awiya learned of this, he was very
pleased.

11. Sunni eminent ulema and historians, including Yusuf Sibt Ibn Jauzi in
his Tadhkira Khawasu'l-Umma, p.122; Allama Mas'udi, author of
Muruju'z-Dhahab, in Isbatu'l-Wasiyya, p.136; Ibn Abi'l-Hadid in
Sharh-e-Nahju'l-Balagha, vol. IV, p.18, reporting from Abu'l-Faraj and Yahya
Bin Hasan, author of Kitabu'n-Nasab; Muhammad Khwawind Shah in his
Rauzatu's-Safa, and many others have written that when the corpse of Imam
Hasan was being transported to Medina, A'yesha, mounted on a mule and
accompanied by a group of the Bani Umayya and their slaves, stopped the
group with Imam Hasan's body. They said that they would not let Imam Hasan
be buried by the side of the Holy Prophet. According to the report of
Mas'udi, Ibn Abbas said: "It is strange of you, A'yesha! Was not the Day of
Jamal, that is, your entering the battlefield mounted on a camel, sufficient
for you? Now should the people also keep in memory the Day of Baghl (mule)?

12. Differences in the four schools of thought namely shaafei, Maaliki,
Hanmbali and hanafi, which came in after the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) had been
so intense that they used to go to the extent of calling each other
infidels.

The above indisputably shows that there did exist tremendous differences and
an increasingly pathetic state of affairs of the Muslims right after the
passing away of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.). It will be absolutely wrong to
endeavor and find out the roots to the causes of the plight of the
contemporary Muslim without actually finding out the roots to the pathetic
status of the Muslims immediately after the Holy Prophet ( S.A.W.). It is
eventually the pathetic status of the Muslims immediately after the Holy
Prophet (S.A.W.) which has been inherited by the present day Muslim. But the
big question is - How, in this seemingly confusing situation, do we find the
truth? How do we analyze the events taking shape after the passing away of
the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.)? The Ahle sunnat people come up with a theory of
Ijma. They boldly mention that inspite of the differences amongst the
Muslims, the Muslims were all very much united on one platform. Yes, it is
like saying that the pant has 40,000 holes in it but still it is perfect -
You can wear it! What kind of gymnastics of words is this? If the Muslims
had more than 40,000 deep-rooted differences of which the above 12 are
glaring evidences then it means they had differences - as simple as this.
They were NOT united on any one aspect. Let us not beat behind the bushes.
Let us not follow the words " If the facts don't fit the theory, change the
facts - Albert Einstein (1879 - 1955) (attributed). Indeed if the theory
does not fit the facts we need to change the theory. If we ponder on this
and sincerely endeavor to seek the truth we will understand that these kinds
of disturbances were not exclusive to the Muslim society. Any community at
that which has so many resources under it and has huge power will get
involved in this kind of strife if the previous leader does not designate
one single leader. If the previous leader leaves the community without
designating his heir for the community and the community has such resources
it can very easily be predicted that enormous strife and disturbances will
follow in the community. Hence this ultimately devolves on the Holy Prophet
(S.A.W.). If the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) had to avoid disturbances after him
then he had to appoint his heir. There was absolutely no chance that the
Muslim ummat would have remained safe from disturbances and internal strife
if there was no ONE SINGLE person appointed as the Holy Prophets (S.A.W.)'s
heir and appointed before the passing away of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.). If
a person says that the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) did not appoint anyone as his
heir throughout his lifetime then he is most certainly attributing an error,
short sightedness and a shortcoming on the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) – may Allah
(S.W.T.) protect everyone from such an assumption. Hence, after all the
pains we have taken we have at least understood the following:

1. Plight of the present day Muslims are not related purely to the present
day problems but are inherited from the past that is ultimately inherited
from the problems faced by Muslims immediately after the passing away of the
Holy Prophet (S.A.W.).

2. The problems of the Muslims immediately after the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)
was because they were not united under one single banner of TRUTH.

3. The Muslims after the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) were not united under one
banner of truth because the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) did not identify this
banner of truth by not appointing his heir. Thus the root cause of all the
problems faced by the Muslims throughout so many centuries is the error of
the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) - May Allah (S.W.T.) protect us from such wild and
false imaginations. The other possibility is that the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)
did appoint his heir and vicegerent but the majority of the Muslims
disregarded it. Thus all the problems faced by the Muslims throughout so
many centuries whether it be spiritual or material has to be attributed to
this disregard.

If it is true that the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) did appoint an heir and
vicegerent after him but the majority of the Muslims disregarded it then we
should do our utmost to find this appointment by the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.).
Let us utilize all the latest tools available to mankind to scan and find
out the moment in the life of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) when he appointed
his heir and vicegerent. If we study the life of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)
we will find out that we do not require any tools ( no microscopes please)
to locate where and how did the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) appoint his heir. In
fact his life is full of small and big incidences wherein he has announced
his heir. He has not hidden these events anywhere and has not made this
appointment ambiguous. These kinds of repeated announcement by the holy
Prophet (S.A.W.) of his heir is abundant in his life time and is clearly put
up. The Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) was far too merciful to have possibly concealed
the appointment. The Holy Quran says: " Certainly an apostle has come to you
from among yourselves; grievous to him is your falling into distress,
excessively solicitous respecting you; to the believers (he is)
compassionate, merciful." (9:128).

Amongst all the small and big instances wherein the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)
has mentioned the appointment of his heir, the event of Ghadir is the
biggest occasion. After completion of the last pilgrimage of the Holy
Prophet ( S.A.W.) he collected all the Muslims possibly available at a place
called Ghadir-e-khumm and then vehemently announced the appointment of
Ali(A.S.) as his heir and vicegerent in no uncertain terms. Since whatever
we have discussed till now is focussed on this event of Ghadir, we need to
elaborate this event in a greater detail.

*Geographical location of Ghadir:*

Ghadir literary means small lake or pond (Ref. Al-Munjid). Ghadir is the
name of a place that comes on the way from Makkah to Medina. It is 3 miles
further than Johfa towards Medina. There existed a small pond at this place.
Though geographically it exists on the way to Medina but this place acted as
an exit point for all the people going out from Makkah for all the other
places. When the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) halted at this place after his last
pilgrimage to make his all-significant announcement it was extremely hot at
that time and it was close to mid-day. It was a wayside tract of barren
land. There was no shelter present over there at that time. In fact there
existed merely small minor patches of shades provided by a few acacia trees.

*Date:*

The date is 18th Zilhajjah of the year 10 A.H. (10 March 632 CE)

*Event Backdrop: *

The Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) asked his companions to call the Muslims in general
to attend for a pilgrimage to the Holy Kaaba. The Holy Prophet(S.A.W.)
specified that he himself would also be there to attend for the pilgrimage
and teach the Muslims the rituals of the pilgrimage and convey his
significant messages directly to all. The call for the pilgrimage was made.
On his way to Makkah more than 70,000 Muslims joined him. By the fourth of
Zilhajjah more than 100,000 Muslims had collected for the Haj with the Holy
Prophet (S.A.W.).

*After the Last pilgrimage:*

After completing the last pilgrimage the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) along with the
Muslims set out of Makkah. On their way back the Muslims reached a place
called Ghadir-e-khumm. The following verse was revealed to the Holy
Prophet(S.A.W.): " O Apostle! Deliver what has been sent down to you from
your Lord; and if you don't do it, you have not delivered His message (at
all); and Allah will protect you from the people ..." (Quran 5:67)

Delivery of the sermon:

On receiving the above verse, the Holy Prophet stopped at that very place
called Ghadir-e-khumm. He ordered his companions to call back those of the
Muslims who had gone ahead. He waited for those Muslims who had remained
behind to join them. He ordered Salman (A.R.) to prepare for a pulpit with
the help of rocks and camel toolings. It was prime noontime and Muslims had
tied their heads and legs on account of the heat. Muslims had started to sit
near the temporary pulpit. The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) was at this place for
about 5 hours. He recited nearly 100 verses of the Holy Quran most of which
were in the praise of Ali(A.S.). Seventy three times he reminded and
admonished the Muslims about the their deeds and future.

The following is a part of the lengthy speech of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)
which has also been narrated by the sunni authorities repeatedly:

"It seems the time has approached when I shall be called away (by Allah) and
I shall answer that call. I am leaving for you two precious things and if
you adhere to them both, you will never go astray after me. They are the
Book of Allah and my Progeny, that is my Ahlul Bayt. The two shall never
separate from each other until they come to me by the Pool (of Paradise)."
Then the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) in an attempt to remind Muslims of his own
authority over them said: " Do I not have more right over the believers than
what they have over themselves? " Muslims answered unanimously " Yes, O'
Messenger of God ". This served as a stepping stone for the announcement of
his hier and vicegerent. The Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) held out the hand of
Ali(A.S.) and said: " For whoever I am his Leader (mawla), 'Ali is his
Leader (mawla)." The Holy Prophet then continued to say: " O' God, love
those who love him, and be hostile to those who are hostile to him."

*Revelation of the verse 5:3*

Once the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) completed his speech this verse of the Holy
Quran was revealed to him: " Today I have perfected your religion and
completed my favour upon you, and I am satisfied that Islam be your
religion." (5:3). This verse explicitly mentions that only along with this
express announcement of the vicegerancy by the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) can the
religion of Islam be considered as complete and perfect. Without this
announcement or because of the disregard of this announcement the religion
of Islam will be merely half truth. As indicated earlier many a times half
truths are more dangerous than full falsehoods. No doubt if the Muslims
disregard this announcement they will have to endure oppression and hardship
both materially and spiritually.

*Hassan Bin Thabit's poetry:*

Immediately after completion of the sermon Hassan Bin Thabit sought the
permission of the Holy Prophet to convey to the audience his poetry which he
had instantaneously composed regarding this event of ghadir. The Holy
Prophet(S.A.W.) told him " Say with the blessings of Allah ". He then
conveyed the following verses of his poetry to the audience:
" He calls them, (on) the day of Ghadir, their Prophet

In Khumm so hear (and heed) the Messenger's call,

He said: "Who is your guide and leader? (mawlakum wa waliyyukum)"

They said, and there was no apparent blindness (clearly):

"Your God, our guide, and you are our leader

And you won't find from among us, in this, any disobedient,"

He said to him: "Stand up O' Ali, for I am

pleased to announce you Imam and guide after me (min ba'di imam(an) wa
hadiy(an)),

So whomever I was his leader (mawla), then this is his leader (mawla)

So be to him supporters in truth and followers,"

*Oath of allegiance:*

The Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) keeping to his long term merciful nature towards
the Muslims did not get content only on this announcement. He wanted this
announcement to take the shape of appropriate action from the side of the
Muslims. In lieu of this the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) ordered the Muslims to
meet Ali(A.S.) and give oath of allegiance to him. Umar Bin AL-Khattab came
first to Ali(A.S.), gave oath of allegiance to Ali(A.S.) and said "Well done
Ibn Abi Talib! Today you became the Leader (mawla) of all believing men and
women." After Umar was Abu Bakr, Uthman, Talha and then others. The entire
process of giving allegiance to Ali(A.S.) by the then present 120,000 people
took 3 days.

*Revelation of the verse 70:1-3 :*

The news about the above announcement and the subsequent allegiance of oath
given by the Muslims to Ali(A.S.) spread across both the urban and rural
areas. This event was so significant that it touched the Muslims all across
the globe. In this process Harith Ibn Nu'man al-Fahri (or Nadhr Ibn Harith
according to another tradition)came to know about this. He hurriedly came to
Madinah and started disputing with the Holy Peophet(S.A.W.) on the issue of
appointment of Ali(A.S.) as the vicegerant. He told the Holy
Prophet(S.A.W.)"You commanded us to testify that there is no deity but Allah
and that you are the Messenger of Allah. We obeyed you. You ordered us to
perform the prayers five times a day and we obeyed. You ordered us to
observe fasts during the month of Ramadhan and we obeyed. Then you commanded
us to offer pilgrimage to Makkah and we obeyed. But you are not satisfied
with all this and you raised your cousin by your hand and imposed him upon
us as our master by saying `Ali is the mawla of whom I am mawla.' Is this
imposition from Allah or from you?"

The Prophet (S.A.W.) said : "By Allah who is the only deity! This is from
Allah, the Mighty and the Glorious." On hearing this while going back to his
she camel Harith said " O Allah! If what Muhammad said is correct then fling
on us a stone from the sky and subject us to severe pain and torture." He
had not even reached his she camel that Allah(S.W.T.) flung a stone on him
which struck him on his head and penetrated his entire body and he was
instantaneously left dead. At this the following verse was revealed "A
questioner questioned about the punishment to fall. For the disbelievers
there is nothing to avert it, from Allah the Lord of the Ascent." (70:1-3).

We have mentioned above the entire episode of the Ghadir. But unfortunately
even after knowing and understanding the entire truth we see heads move in
rejecting the truth. There are basically 3 excuses which the opponents
offer. Though these excuses are self-evident to be no more than futile
excuses but we will deal with them in detail so that the opponents are left
with no shelter place.

*Excuses:*

1. The tradition of Ghadir is not reliable and authentic.

2. The word Maula used in the tradition does not imply master but it means
friend. Hence the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)actually announced about the
friendship of Ali (A.S.) on the day of Ghadir and not about mastership of
Ali (A.S.).

3. It does not appeal to our common sense that the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.)
appointed Ali (A.S.) as his successor in clear terms and still the
companions of the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) disobeyed him and after his death
appointed a vicegerent by themselves.

We will deal with each one of the above excuses separately and in such
details as to dispel all doubts and lay bare the mischief of the
mischief-makers.

*Excuse 1:* The tradition of Ghadir is not reliable and authentic

Rebuttal:

A. Sunni references for the verse 5:67 revealed in relation and just before
the tradition of Ghadir. Though there are atleast 69 chains of transmitters
present for this from Sunni sources but due to lack of space we will mention
only 9 books:

1. Yanabi` al-mawaddah - Khwajah Kalan, Sulayman b. Ibrahim, al-Husayni

B. Sunni references regarding the tradition of Ghadir. Here it is more than
sufficient to mention that Allama Amini has mentioned this tradition from
110 companions of the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) and 84 second generation
(Ta'biun) and 360 sunni ulema. In fact at other places another 200 sunni
ulema references are given which takes the number of sunni ulema to have
related the tradition of Ghadir to atleast 560! Because of lack of space
again here we will mention only 9 references from sunni sources who have
related the tradition of Ghadir and that too have specifically mentioned the
words of "For whoever I am his Leader (mawla), 'Ali is his Leader (mawla).":

al-Harithi al-Badakhshi (al-Badakhshani).

C. Sunni references about the verse 5:3 being revealed immediately after the
sermon of Ghadir. Again here we can provide atleast 35 chains of
transmitters but due to lack of space we will mention only 9 sunni books to
confirm:

1. Manaqib `Ali b. Abi Talib - Ibn al-Maghazili, `Ali b. Muhammad, Abu
al-Hasan al-Tayyib al-Jullabi al-Shafi`i.

Again due to paucity of space we limit to 9 books refferences. There are
otherwise atleast 76 chains of narrators mentioned in books for this.

F. The revelation of the verse 70:1-3 is regarding the event of the dispute
of Harith as mentioned earlier. References for this are:

1. al-'Arba`in fi fada'il Amir al-Mu'minin - Jamal al-Din `Ata' Allah b.

9. al-Fusul al-muhimmah li ma`rifat al-a'immah - Ibn al-Sabbagh, Nur al-Din
`Ali b. Muhammad b. Ahmad, al-Ghazzi al-Maliki.

Again we are unable to mention other sources due to paucity of space. There
are atleast 31 chains of transmitters for this.

*Excuse 2: The word Maula* used in the tradition does not imply master but
it means friend. Hence the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) actually announced about
the friendship of Ali (A.S.) on the day of Ghadir and not about mastership
of Ali(A.S.).

Rebuttal:

Though multitude of reasons could be proffered to nullify the above excuse
we will mention only 5 of them:

A. The first proof is the Holy Qur'an and the revelation of the verse: "O
Apostle! deliver that which has been revealed to you from your Lord; and if
you do it not, then you have not delivered His message, and Allah will
protect you from the people." (5.67)

Qazi in Kashf Ghumma gives a report from Razi Bin Abdullah: "In the days of
the Holy Prophet we used to read this verse thus: 'O our Prophet (Muhammad)
deliver what has been sent down to you from your Lord, that is, Ali is the
master of the believers. If you do not, then you have not delivered His
message." Also Suyuti in his Durru'l-Mansur from Ibn Mardawiyya, Ibn Asakir
and Ibn Abi Hatim from Abu Sa'id Khadiri, Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud (one of the
writers of Wahi - revelations) and Qazi Shukani in Tafsir-e-Fathu'l-Ghadir
narrate that in the day of the Holy Prophet they also recited that verse in
that very way. In short, the warning contained in this verse says: "If you
do it not then (it will be as if) you have not delivered His message (at
all)..." shows that the message which the Holy Prophet had been ordered to
deliver was of great importance. It was in fact essential to the completion
of Prophethood itself. Therefore, the issue in question was surely the
matter of the imamate, the conferring of authority on one who would guide
the people according to the tenets of Islam after the death of the Holy
Prophet. This important issue cannot be the friendship of someone by any
stretch of imagination.

B. Second proof is the revelation of the verse "This day have I perfected
for you your religion and completed my favor on you and chosen for you Islam
for a religion." (5:3). Scholars trusted by sunnis, such as Jalalu'd-din
Suyuti in Durru'l-Mansur, vol. II, p. 256 and Itqan, vol. I, p. 31;
Imamu'l-Mufassirin Tha'labi in Kashfu'l-Bayan; Hafiz Abu Nu'aim Ispahani in
Ma Nusala Mina'l-Qur'an Fi Ali; Abu'l-Fatha Nazari in Khasa'isu'l-Alawi; Ibn
Kathir Shami in Tafsir, vol. II, p. 41, following Hafiz Ibn Mardawiyya:
Muhammad Bin Jarir Tabari, scholar, commentator and historian of the 3rd
century A.H. in Tafsir-e-Kitabu'l-Wilaya; Hafiz Abu'l-Qasim Haskani in
Shawahid-ut-Tanzil; Sibt Ibn Jauzi in Tadhkira-e-Khawasu'l-Umma, p. 18; Abu
Ishaq Hamwaini in Fara'id-us-Simtain, ch. XII; Abu Sa'id Sijistani in
Kitabu'l-Wilaya; Al-Khatib-e-Baghdadi in Ta'rikh-e-Baghdad, vol. VIII, p.
290; Ibn Maghazili Faqih Shafi'i in Manaqib, ch. XIV and Maqtalu'l-Husain,
ch. IV, all have written that on the day of Ghadir-e-Khum the Holy Prophet
appointed Ali by divine order to the rank of wilaya (Vicegerent). He told
the people whatever he was ordained to say about Ali and raised his hands so
high that the white of both his armpits was visible. He addressed the people
thus: "Salute Ali because he is the amir (lord) of the believers. The whole
Community complied with his order. They had not yet departed from one
another when the aforesaid verse was revealed." The Holy Prophet was highly
pleased with the revelation of this verse. So, addressing the people, he
said: "Allah is Great, He who has perfected for them their religion and has
completed His favor on them and is satisfied with my Prophethood and Ali's
vicegerency after me."

C. In that hot desert, where there was no protection for the travelers, the
Holy Prophet gathered the whole umma. People sat in the shade of the camels,
with their feet covered, in the scorching heat of the sun. In these
conditions the Prophet delivered a long address, which Khawarizmi and Ibn
Mardawiyya in their Manaqib, and Tabari in his Kitabu'l-Wilaya and others
have narrated. Does it make sense to think that the Prophet would require
thousands of his followers to spend three days in the blazing desert to
swear allegiance to Ali merely to indicate that Ali was their friend? It is
reasonable to conclude therefore, that these arrangements were made not
merely to indicate that people should befriend Ali. The event, in fact,
marked the completion of the Prophet's message: the establishment of the
Imamate, the source of the umma's guidance after the death of the Prophet.

D. Some of sunni reputable ulema have acknowledged that the primary meaning
of "maula" is "master." Among them is Sibt Ibn Jauzi, who after giving ten
meanings of the word in his Tadhkira-e-Khawas, ch. II, p. 20, says that none
of them except the tenth one corresponds with what the Holy Prophet meant to
say. He says: "The hadith specifically means obedience; so the tenth meaning
is correct, and it means 'mastery over others.' Hence, the hadith means 'of
whomever I am the 'maula' (master) Ali is also his 'maula' (master)." In the
book Maraju'l-Bahrain Hafiz Abdu'l-Faraj Yahya Bin Sa'id Saqafi interprets
it in the same way. He narrates this hadith with his own sources from his
leaders, who said that the Holy Prophet, holding Ali by the hand, said: "Of
whomsoever I am 'wali' or master over himself, Ali is also his 'wali' or
master over himself." Sibt Ibn Jauzi says, "The saying of the Holy Prophet
that Ali has authority or is the master over the selves of all the believers
clearly proves the Imamate or vicegerency of Ali and that obedience to him
is obligatory."

E. Ali (A.S.) himself has referred to the tradition of Ghadir to mean master
and has emphasised that he was clearly appointed as the vicegerant at
Ghadir. Also others have referred to this event in form of ihtejaj(protest)
or Munashadah(adjuration). Some places where Ali(A.S.) has reminded the
event of Ghadir vis-a-vis his appointment as vicegerant are: (a.) On the day
of shura (counsel after Umar's death). (b.) During the days of Uthmans rule.
(C.) The Day of Rahbah (year 35 AH) when many Companions stood up and bore
witness that they attended and heard the tradition of the Prophet [s] first
hand, twelve of whom were the participants of the Battle of Badr. (d.) The
Battle of al-Jamal, year 36 AH where he reminded Talhah b. 'Ubaydullah. (e.)
The Day of the Rukban (riders) where several witnesses testified. (f.) The
Day of Battle of Siffin (year 37 AH). Other members of the Household
reminded people: (a.)Ihtejaj by Fatimah al-Zahra'(S.A.) (b.) Munashadah by
Imam Husein(A.S.) (c.)Munashadah by Imam Husayn(A.S.).Other munashadahs and
ihtejaj: munashadah of youth with Abu Hurayrah; Ihtijaj of Abd Allah b.
Ja'far with Mu'awiyah; Ihtijaj in refutation of Amr b. al-'Asi; Ihtijaj of
Amr b. al-'Asi with Mu'awiyah; Ihtijaj of Ammar b. Yasir on day of Siffin;
Ihitjaj of Asbagh b. Nubata in a sitting with Mu'awiyah; Munashadah of a man
with Zayd b. Arqam; Munashadah of an Iraqi man with Jabir b. Abd Allah
al-Ansari; Ihtijaj of Qays al-Ansari with Mu'awiyah in Madinah; Ihtijaj
Darmiyyah al-Hajwaniyyah with Mu'awiyah; Ihtijaj of Amr al-Awdi; Ihtijaj of
Umar b. Abd al-aziz, the Umayyad caliph; ihtijaj of Ma'mun, the Abbasid
caliph, with jurists.

The above clearly refutes the second excuse and renders it baseless.

*Excuse 3:* It does not appeal to our common sense that the Holy Prophet
(S.A.W.) appointed Ali (A.S.) as his successor in clear terms and still the
companions of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W.) disobeyed him and after his death
appointed a vicegerant by themselves.

Rebuttal:

A. This excuse may be common (commonly used frivolous argument) but it is
not sense. Common sense does actually accept it very easily that if any
leader identifies a vicegerant and the followers and not entirely sincere
then the followers will not abide by this appointment.

B. Both the sects accept that the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.) had said " You are to
me as Aaron was to Moses except that there shall be no prophet after me."
Now let us analyse the similarities between Aaron and Ali(A.S.) so that we
come to understand how it is possible for the companions of a Prophet to
disobey and disregard the clear appointment of the vicegerant. The Holy
Qur'an states that when Moses appointed Aaron his successor, he gathered
round him the Bani Isra'il (according to some reports, 70,000 people). Moses
emphasized that in his absence they should obey Aaron, his Caliph and
successor. Moses then went up the mountain to be alone with Allah. Before a
month passed, Samiri incited dissension among the Isra'ilis. He fashioned a
golden calf and the Bani Isra'il, having left Aaron, gathered round the
treacherous Samiri in large numbers. It had been only a short time before
this that the same Bani Isra'il had heard Moses say that during his absence
Aaron was to be his Caliph and that they should obey him. Nevertheless,
70,000 people followed Samiri. The Prophet Aaron loudly protested this
action and forbade them from indulging in such sinful acts, but no one
listened to him. The verse of Sura A'raf states that when Moses came back,
Aaron said to him: "Son of my mother! Surely the people reckoned me weak and
had well-nigh slain me..." (7:150). The Bani Isra'il themselves heard the
clear instruction from Moses, but when Moses went up to the mountain, Samiri
seized his opportunity. He fashioned a golden calf and misguided the Bani
Isra'il. Similarly, after the death of the Prophet, some people who had
heard him say that Ali was his successor, turned against Ali. Imam Ghazali
referred to this fact in the beginning of his fourth treatise in
Sirru'l-'Alamin. He states that some people returned to the state of their
former ignorance. In this respect, there is great similarity between the
situation of Aaron and that of Ali. Like many of renowned sunni scholars and
historians, Abu Muhammad Abdullah Bin Muslim Bin Qutayba Bahili Dinawari,
the well-known Qazi of Dinawar, in his Al-Imama Wa Siyasa, Volume I, page
14, narrates in detail the events of Saqifa. He says that they threatened to
burn down Ali's house and they forcibly took him to the mosque and
threatened to kill him unless he swore allegiance to them. Ali went to the
sacred grave of the Prophet and repeated the same words of the Holy Qur'an
which Aaron spoke to Moses: "He (Aaron) said: Son of my mother! Surely the
people reckoned me weak and had well-nigh slain me..." (7:150).

C. Not all those 120,000 Muslims who were at Ghadir stayed at Madineh. Only
a few thousand stayed at Madinah. Out of these also many were bedouins or
slaves or poor men. Only a maximum of 100 influential people had gathered at
Saqifa. So it will be wrong to say that all 120,000 people present at the
day of Ghadir conspired and disobeyed the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.). Out of these
only less than 100 influential people conspired and selected a vicegerant by
themselves going against the verdict and order of the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.)
himself. It should not astonish us that around 100 people went against the
verdict of the Holy Prophet(S.A.W.).

D. Communication system was not strong in those days. By the time everyone
came to know of the selection of Abu Bakr against the verdict of the Holy
Prophet(S.A.W.) it was too late. Abu Bakr had already become too powerful in
material terms. Even if someone tried to oppose the ruling caliph he was
silenced either through temptation or through intimidation. The episode of
Malik Ibn Nuwayrah is a glaring example in this.

E. All the companions were not obedient. There are so many instances to
prove the disobedience of the companions. (a.) During the last days of his
blessed life, the Messenger of God prepared an army to do battle with the
Byzantines and he appointed Usamah b. Zayd to be its commander. This
appointment of a young man, despite the availability of older and more
experienced men, proved displeasing to some of the Companions, and led to an
argument among them. Those who were strongly opposed to Usamah b. Zayd asked
the Prophet to dismiss him, but he paid no attention to their request and
commanded Abu Bakr, 'Umar and 'Uthman to join the ranks of the Muslim army
as it departed from Madinah. However, they not only disregarded military
discipline but also disobeyed the categorical command of the Prophet.
Instead of proceeding to the front with the army, they split off and
returned to Madinah - Ibn Hisham, al-Sirah, Vol. IV p. 338; al-Ya'qubi,
al-Tarikh, Vol. II, p.92; Ibn al-Athir, al-Kamil, Vol. II, pp. 120-21. (b.)
Some Sunni historians and hadith scholars have written that when the Prophet
decided to write a document that would prevent the Muslims from going astray
'Umar said: "The Messenger of God has become delirious." Others, however, in
order to soften the offensiveness of his words, maintain that he said:
"Sickness has overcome the Prophet; you have the Book of God at your
disposal, which is enough for us." - Muslim, al-Sahih, Vol. III, p. 1259;
al-Bukhari, al-Sahih, Vol. IV , p. 5; Ahmad b. Hanbal, al-Musnad, hadith no.
2992.,when companions could disobey the Holy Prophet( S.A.W.) in his
presence they can very easily disobey in his absence after death. But here
it is worth mentioning that there were respectable and independent minded
companions who did not change their position after the death of the Prophet.
They obeyed the appointment of Ali(A.S.) as the vicegerent that took place
at Ghadir. Although they were more or less compelled to remain silent, they
remained loyal to 'Ali b. Abi Talib, peace be upon him, as leader. Among the
outstanding personalities belonging to this group were Salman al-Farisi, Abu
Dharr al-Ghifari, Abu Ayyub al-Ansari, Khuzaymah b. Thabit, Miqdad b.
al-Aswad, al-Kindi, 'Ammar b. yasir, Ubayy b. Ka'b, Khalid b. Sa'id, Bilal,
Qays b. Sa'd, Aban, Buraydah al-Ashami, Abu 'l-Haytham b. al-Tayyihan, as
well as many others whose names are recorded in Islamic history. Some
scholars have listed two hundred and fifty Companions of the Prophet,
complete with names and descriptions, as belonging to this class.

*Ghadir in the words of Non-Muslim:*

We have enunciated sufficient reasons to dispel all possibilities for
excuses. Here we would also like to quote an orientalist for sake of
reference. Vaglieri has said in the Encyclopaedia of Islam about Ghadir
Khumm: It is, however, certain that Muhammad did speak in this place and
utter the famous sentence, for the account of this event has been preserved,
either in a concise form or in detail, not only by al-Ya'kubi, whose
sympathy for the 'Alid cause is well known, but also in the collection of
traditions which are considered canonical, especially in the Musnad of Ibn
Hanbal; and the hadiths are so numerous and so well attested by the
different isnãds that it does not seem possible to reject them. Vaglieri
continues, "Several of these hadiths are cited in the bibliography, but it
does not include the hadíth which, although reporting the sentence, omit to
name Ghadir Khumm, or those which state that the sentence was pronounced at
al-Hudaybiya. The complete documentation will be facilitated when the
Concordance of Wensinck have been completely published. In order to have an
idea of how numerous these hadiths are, it is enough to glance at the pages
in which Ibn Kathir has collected a great number of them with their isnads."

*Ghadir as a feast:*

Muhammad Bin Talha Shafi'i in his Matalibu's-Su'ul in Part V, ch. 1, p. 16,
says "In this hadith(of Ghadir) the Holy Prophet indicated that whatever
obligations the believers had in respect to him, they had also in respect to
Ali. As the Holy Prophet was certainly master of the believers in all of
their matters, their helper, leader, and chief - all of these being
connotations of the word "maula" - then it follows that he meant the same
thing for Ali (A.S.) also. And this is of course, an exalted position, an
eminently high rank, which was specifically assigned to Ali. It is for this
reason that the Day of Ghadir was a day of eid and rejoicing for the lovers
and friends of Ali."

Also Ibne Khalakan in Vafiyaat-ol-Ayan and Abu Rayhan Biruni in
(Asar-al-Baghiyeh), besides so many others, considered Ghadir as one of the
holidays that all Muslims realized and celebrated.

*Ghadir in respect of the Present Imam (A.S.):*

After all the painstaking efforts we are unmistakably able to conclude that
the present problems of the Muslim Ummah are due to the mistakes and
falsehood of the previous generation and not the present. This root of all
falsehood is the disregard of the Holy Prophet's (S.A.W.) words when he
appointed Ali (A.S.) at Ghadir. Now if we would like to correct the error
that had taken place in the earlier times then Allah (S.W.T.) has given
opportunity to us. After Ali (A.S.) there are 11 more vicegerents. Like the
tradition specifies:

Sheikh Sulayman Balkhi Hanafi in his Yanabiu'l-Mawadda, ch.76, reports from
Fara'idu's-Simtain of Hamwaini, who reports from Mujahid, who reports from
Ibn Abbas, that a Jew named Na'thal came to the Holy Prophet and asked him
questions about Tawhid (Unity of Allah). The Holy Prophet answered his
questions and the Jew embraced Islam. Then he said: "O Holy Prophet, every
prophet had a wasi (vicegerent). Our Prophet, Moses Bin Imran, made a will
for Yusha Bin Nun. Please tell me who is your wasi?" The Holy Prophet said:
"My vicegerent is Ali Bin Abi Talib; after him are Hasan, and Husain and
after them are nine Imams, who are the successive descendants of Husain."

Na'thal asked the Holy Prophet the names of those Imams. The Holy Prophet
said: "After Husain, his son, Ali, will be the Imam; after him his son,
Muhammad; after him his son, Ja'far; after him his son Musa; after him his
son, Ali; after him his son, Muhammad; after him his son, Hasan; after him
his son, Muhammad Mahdi will be the last Imam. There will be twelve Imams."

In addition to the names of the nine Imams, this hadith further states that
each would succeed as Imam after his father. Na'thal made further inquiries,
and the Holy Prophet described the manner of death of each Imam.

Then Na'thal said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that
you are His Holy Prophet. I bear witness that these twelve holy Imams are
your vicegerents after you. What you have said is exactly what is recorded
in our books and in the will of Moses."

Then the Holy Prophet said: "Paradise is for him who loves them and obeys
them, and Hell is for him who is hostile to them and opposes them."

Na'thal then recited some couplets to the effect that "May Allah, the
Exalted, shower His blessings upon you."

Ghadir, the Greatest Eid of All Religions

Quran and Etrat Internet University

"Today I have perfected your religion and completed my favor upon you, and I
was satisfied that Islam be your religion." (The Holy Quran, 5:3)

Eid al-Ghadir, which is known as Eid al-Akbar (the greatest Eid) in Islamic
narrations, could be referred to as the greatest celebration (Eid) of all
religions. For the result of the mission of all the messengers of Allah
became accomplished on this day.

When Prophet Nuh (Noah) (PBUH) was appointed, he introduced his people to
his religion and told them: "Allah has called upon you to have faith in this
religion; however, there shall be a prophet after me whose religion is more
perfect than mine, so have faith in him and be aware that the most perfect
religion will be brought by the last prophet". Similar to that, Ibrahim
(Abraham), Musa (Moses), Isa (Jesus) (PBUT) were appointed and they
gradually made the religion more perfect, and they spoke of the most perfect
religion, the one brought by the last prophet.

Now, Islam has been brought to people and the religion has reached its most
perfect state, and the mission of all Allah's messengers is manifested in
Islam. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) has established Islam within 23 years of
enormous endeavors, and has conveyed brotherhood and equality amongst all
the Muslims.

Now, he is preparing to visit the house of Allah , and he has called upon
all Muslims, no matter what their race or tribe is, to join him in
performing Hajjah al-Weedaa' (farewell pilgrimage), his last pilgrimage.

People were accompanying Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) in performing the Hajj
rituals and meanwhile, they heard the last words of him. When returning,
Gabriel comes down to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) saying:" O Messenger!
Proclaim what has been revealed to you from your Lord." Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH&HP) was worried about the reaction of some of his companions since he
was aware of their hypocrisy through revelation (2).

Then, Gabriel came down for the second time:" O Messenger! Proclaim what
has been revealed to you from your Lord". Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP), the
mercy upon mankind, was worried about the ailing hearts and weak faith of
new Muslims. As he was looking for a solution, Gabriel came down for the
third time:" O Messenger! Proclaim what has been revealed to you from your
Lord, for if you do it not you have not conveyed His message and Allah will
protect you from the (evil designs of) people." (3)

What is this message that if not proclaimed, the Prophet's mission would not
be conveyed?
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP), who possesses both the states of Prophethood and
Imamate, is addressed as "O Messenger!", which reveals that his state of
Prophethood is targeted. On the other hand, the phrase "you have not
conveyed His message" indicates that not proclaiming this message would
result in not having accomplished the duty of Prophethood.

In the following section of the verse, Allah assures Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH&HP) by saying that:" Allah will protect you from the (evil designs of)
people." Here protection does not mean to address physical, financial.
protection; because Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) never felt fear during the
battles, and his life's history testifies that he never stood back even a
single step in the battles.

Even in the battle of Uhud, when the Muslims were seemingly defeated and
their army was collapsed, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) was still fighting
against the pagans. In addition to that, Allah describes not only Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH&HP), but also other prophets as:" those who proclaim the
messages of Allah and have fear in Him, and have fear in no one but
Allah."(4) Therefore, Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH&HP) fear was about damages to
the religion and the ignorance of people; hence, the good tidings by Allah
were about the victory over the ignorance of people, just like as he told
Prophet Moses (PBUH):" Fear not; you are the superior"(5).

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) stops at a place called Ghadir. He summons those
who have gone forward to return and wait for the followers to join. Them, he
climbs an eminence and gives a sermon:

"Praise be to Allah; I testify that He is the Lord and I am His servant.
Gabriel has descended to me thrice, and has ordered me from Allah to stop on
this land to proclaim His message. Am I not your Wali (more precious to you
than your own lives)?" People replied:" Yes". He continued:" Am I not your
prophet and leader?" Again, all the people confirmed. It was then that he
took Ali ibn Abi Talib's (PBUH) hands and raised them high, and said,
"Whoever has me as his Master (Wali), Ali is his Master (Wali)".

After that, those that were present came to Ali (PBUH) at the tent which
Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) had ordered to be set up, and congratulated him
on his new position. They addressed him as Amir al-Mu'minin (Ruler of the
Faithful). Historians have mentioned numbers up to 120000 for the people
present at that time.

Then, the following verse of the Quran was revealed:" Today, those who
disbelieve have despaired of your religion; so fear them not and fear Me.
Today I have perfected for you your religion and have completed My favor
upon you, and I was satisfied that Islam be your religion."(6)

In the Holy Quran, the terms "Yaum" and "Yauma'izin" usually refer to the
resurrection day; however, the former is used in this verse referring to the
issue of Imamate. Since the Holy Quran starts talking about important issues
with the terms "Al" and "Yaum", it is indicated that the aforementioned
verse, in which the term "al-Yaum" is repeated twice, contains important
news. That important news is indeed appointing the Master and Ruler of the
Muslim community after Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP).

This important event made the disbelievers disappointed. The enemies of
Islam would say: " . we are waiting to see him die" (7), so his religion
would be removed; because it is possible to fight against the book and the
law and to interpret them according to one's desires; however, such divine
Leader could not be fought.

Therefore, the event of Ghadir made the disbelievers despair of this hope
due to the fact that a leader was appointed for the Muslims who possessed
virtues such as bravery, wisdom, patience and constancy, just like Prophet
Muhammad (PBUH&HP). There, a divine successor was appointed by Allah to
continue Prophet's path and supervise the Muslims after Prophet Muhammad
(PBUH&HP).

The next section of the verse talks about perfection of religion and
completion of favor. Obviously, it does not refer to materialistic favors,
because the creatures are constantly blessed by such favors from Allah , and
they are not such that could be completed; hence, another type of favor
(which is indeed superior to and more important than materialistic favors)
is meant.

According to the event of Ghadir, this favor is nothing but the favor of
Imamat (Leadership) and Wilayat (Mastership). Even Allah has admired the
favor of prophethood and Imamat as His greatest favors in the Holy Quran,
and has used the term Minnah (a significant and enormous favor which is
difficult to receive and maintain) regarding these two favors:" Certainly
Allah conferred a great favor upon the believers when He raised among them a
Messenger from amongst themselves." (8); "And We desired to bestow a great
favor upon those who were deemed weak in the land, and to make them the
Imams, and to make them the inheritors."(9)

And finally, the endeavors of all the prophets before Islam and the 23 year
endeavors of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH&HP) became fruitful on the day of
Ghadir, and the argument on mankind became complete.

It is noteworthy that according to the knowledge of Hadith, there are few
events reported to be as authentic as the event of Ghadir. Mas'ood ibn
Nasser Sajestani in the book "Wilayatkade", which is printed in seventeen
volumes, narrates this event on the authority of one hundred twenty people.
Muhammad bin Jarir Tabari in the book "Radd Alaa al-Kharqouziah", narrates
the event of Ghadir from seventy-five different routes, and Ibn Ouqdah
mentions 125 different narrators for this Hadith in the book of Wilayat.

It is quoted from Abou al-Ma'ali Jowni that:" I saw a book in a bookbinding
store which contained the Hadith of Ghadir, and it was written on its back:"
Volume 28 of the routes for the Hadith of Man Kuntu Mawlah (the beginning
phrase of the Hadith of Ghadir which means whoever has me as Master)".
Sayyid Murtada writes that:" We have not come up to a single Islamic sect
that denies the event of Ghadir". Finally, the book of Al-Ghadir by Allamah
Amini is the most general and complete encyclopedia for narrations about the
Ghadir event.

Based on the above, it is on us to celebrate this great Eid. There is a
Hadith in Sahih Muslim narrating from Taariq ibn Shahab that:" A group of
Jews told the second Caliph that:" If such a verse had been revealed to us
(Today I have perfected for you your religion and have completed my favor
upon you) and we knew that day it had been revealed, We would have
celebrated that day."
