Hi everyone,
First question. What would be an appropriate current rating for a power
supply driving 4 Sherline steppers?
The Sherline steppers are rated at 2A per phase, and depending on how the
motors are being driven, I'm assuming that one or two phases could be active
at a time.
The SLA7044 that I'm planning on using for the drivers can be configured to
drive two phases simultaneously to provide additional torque. Does anybody
thing that this mode might be required?
I'm assuming that each stepper also draws pretty much full current whether
it's moving or not (since you need to hold the axis).
So, this tells me that if I assume 2A per stepper, that means I need 8A.
Does this sound right?
I see MPJA has a 24V 10A transformer for $17.99.

I am almost there I think.
I have the sanyo stepper motors.
I have the CNC retrofit kit for my 2000 Mill from Sherline.
I have 3 G210 drives from Gecko.
I have the case and power supply parts.
I have the turboCNC software.
I am just waiting to place an order with Digikey for the last things I
think.

Hi everyone,
I just placed an excel spread sheet in the files section that
complements the CNC For Hobbyists file. I put this together to
present to the Chesapeake Area Machinists Society in January along
with Alan's paper on hobby cnc. Most of the information is still
current and should show you that you can in fact get a CNC ready mill
running for a nominal outlay of cash, less than $250.00 will get you
going if you shop ebay for motors and can get a PC for free you will
be in business. I have no interest in any of the companies listed in
the spread sheet, I just learned all of this the hardway and don't
want to see other people waste precious $ on the wrong stuff to get
CNC going in a home shop.

Hi everyone.
I recently bought a 2010 CNC-ready and added motors, Gecko 210's and
Mach2 to get it working.
I've just created a folder called Drawbar Remover in the files
section and uploaded the first part I cut on my new machine. Hope
it's of interest.
In case it isn't obvious, it's my version of a tool to remove
collet/vice drawbars by breaking the taper without using a hammer.
Seemed a shame to risk messing up the alignment after setting it up
so carefully! This one uses a steel collar let into a groove cut
into the rear spindle and so is very quick to use - just one hex
screw to turn!

Hello, everyone,
I'm not brand new to Sherline CNC, but my newbie sheen hasn't
disappeared, either. Alan, great idea to start this list.
Where I'm at:
Sherline 2000 mill and 4400 lathe; Stepper motors, hardware and
software control from FlashCut CNC (just upgraded to v. 2.07); Vector
Cad/Cam software; also AutoCAD 2002 and Inventor 5 (3D).
We've got a small start-up business - model railroad manufacturing in
N and HO scales, buildings, rolling stock, and eventually steam
locomotives. The shop includes a spin-caster and vulcanizer, vac
forming device, pad printer, standard paint booth, vacuum and
pressure vessels for RTV and resin preparation, and so on.
I'm looking forward to learning a great deal and exchanging
information with group members.

Nice work! Will the blades be left rectangular, or is there more work

I vote for no attachments, they can be a very serious virus problem. I have a 3800 member group, and spammers attack us all of the time.........files, photos, and links have all had problems in them.

Hi everyone,
I'll post my interest in CNC.
I purchased a 5400 mill and 4400 lathe last June, both with CNC mounts and
stepper motors. I'm planning on designing some drivers for them. I've
decided to use the Allegro Micro SLA7044 (which coincidently happens to be
the same ones used on the Sherline driver).
I've obtained 4 samples for the SLA7044:
http://www.allegromicro.com/sf/97042/
And 4 samples of the PG001M:
http://www.allegromicro.com/sf/9001/
Hopefully, I'll get my design done sometime this summer.
I'm planning on using my mill and lathe to create robotic parts. My first
robot using machined parts will a 3kg sumo that's fully autonomous:

Well, I was hoping we could have attachments allowed. Most spammers, etc
don't seem to bother non high profile groups. There are other groups
(South Bend lathe, for one) where this has never been a problem.
Most of us know how to avoid virus', etc.

Hi Alan & group,
As I was saying......
My present project is building a steam locomotive. 1.6" scale/7.5" gauge.
This is not a kit to machine & assemble. All research and scratch build.
I have made many parts on the Sherline CNC as well as 3D solids/surfaces
machining design Mastercam and a machining center at a tech school.
For the Sherline work I use ACad R14 (greatest of their versions) and
Bobcad V17 for toolpath & G-code generation. The Sherline is no toy.
If anyone has access to a tech school shop in their area with a willing staff,
this is a very fun and useful resource to tap.
The attached picture shows a miniature steam turbine wheel being machined.
Part of a working steam dynamo. Output is 10V, 2A, 20 watts.

Hi Dan,
Thank you for joining!
I still have an old Sears/Sherline mill, but my CNC work is now done on
my new 5400 Sherline mill. I have the rotary table as well (CNC), and a
new 17" lathe on order!

Alan,
Thanks for starting this group. I am a member of a lot of other yahoo
groups related to machining, cnc, stepper drives, etc. This one should
work quite nicely with my interests.
I have the short Sherline lathe, the cnc rotary table, and a very old
Sherline mill. In a past
life, I had them running with stepper motors using EMC. They have
been dorment
for a couple of years after moving across the country. But, now I
plan to get them back toghether again. My interests are related to
machining in general, engraving, making guitar parts for guitar
builders, and
writing documentation and how-to articles for beginners.
Thanks,

Hello Alan,
(My last post did not show up, so I'll try again)
I am also a Sherline CNC user! I have a Sherline CNC Mill w/Rotary
Table, and a Sherline Lathe with spindle encoder for threading. My
controller and CNC conversion was done by Bill Griffin of Grifftek.
I use Dolphin Partmaster for my CAD/CAM, and AhHa for my CNC
controller.
I am still in the early stages with all of this, however, I have big
plans. I have posted some of what I am doing on my web site.

I am in the process of developing several end-to-end tutorials for

Hi Dave and Rich,
Thanks Dave! I'm still figuring out a few things about starting a list!
I didn't get Rich's message on the Sherline list yet (wonder what's with
that)!
Rich, This is exactly what I'm thinking might be good for posts to this
new list! I have a few parts for my engines that I'd like to discuss,
I.E., how to go about making parts, from conception to making swarf!

May the Swarf be with you!

Hi to the list,
It seems Yahoo has automatically signed up members, rather then just
OFFERING to sign them up (as I thought I was doing)! My apologies if
you're not interested in this new group.
I'm hoping to get together people who want to run CNC on their Sherline
mill or lathe.
Currently, I run CNC on my Sherline mill, and have just ordered a
lathe. I've been testing my own CNC controller program, STEP4. I've
also ran TurboCNC, and MaxNC.
I run Vector CAD/CAM, and hope to exchange files in this format (as well
as CNC).
My main projects (other then getting CNC on a lathe next) is designing
and building Steam engines. I'd like to hear about ANY CNC projects.
Hope you can participate!
Best regards,
Alan Marconett KM6VV
