"The Sheltie Breeder list is a member-moderated list geared to those who seek and those who mentor. We encourage discussions concerning responsible breeding of Shetland Sheepdogs to the end of achieving the desired breed type, which includes both conformation and performance supporting the total dog philosophy."
To join, you
MUST include your full name, kennel name, location and offer a brief introduction. List members are audited for verification of kennel name and location. All new members are strictly moderated for a reasonable length of time.
Breeding: Mating and conception to whelping, raising and socializing puppies; basic animal husbandry and managing a successful kennel; puppy and stud contracts and leases.
Conformation: Structural virtues and desired type vs. structural faults and cosmetic defects; correct vs. incorrect -- from skeletal to muscle tissues, gaiting and movement.
Genetics: Inbreeding, linebreeding, outcrossing, diversity; color genetics; genetic health issues.
Health Defects Testing: Over 60+ known health defects and diseases to the breed; testing for common problems.
Pedigrees: Learn pedigrees and family lines; untangle breed history.
Showing, Training, and Handling: AKC and other venues; showring procedures; training and handling to a title; campaigning, photographing and other advertising aids.
Just as there are many ways to paint a portrait, remember also that although the standard is the written word, there still leaves room for varied artistic interpretation.
