BASICS OF COB
June 15-21, 2003
You want to build a home, guest cottage, sauna, green
house, garden wall? Cob is a magical, earthen
construction technique, combining sand, clay and straw
into a mix that becomes the sculpting material for
free flowing walls. Cob has many advantages over
conventional building methods. It allows for endless
creativity in the form of built-in sculpted shelves,
niches, arches and furniture, it is easy to learn in a
week, it is dirt cheap, non-toxic, very strong and
requires very few tools. Most materials are usually
found on site or nearby. During the week students will
learn how to:
*
Identify and gather the right materials
*
Mix materials and build walls
*
Add sculptural features such as niches, arches,
shelves, etc.
*
Put in windows and doors
*
Add plumbing and electrical
*
Use earthen plasters
*
Build foundations, drains, roof systems and
insulation.
During the course we will actually build the cob walls
of a small guest cottage getting hands-on experience
in all aspects of the cob building process.
BASICS OF NATURAL BUILDING
June 22-28, 2003
Natural building is a method of creating a home, while
using people and the natural world as precious
resources rather than expendable commodities. Hence,
we constantly search for non-toxic, local materials,
non-industrial methods of building, ease of
construction and affordability, leaving people free
from the mortgage lifestyle.
During this course we will finish a cob building (see
Basics of Cob) using a wide variety of natural
building technics, including:
*
Cob
*
Strawbale construction
*
Light straw-clay
*
Round wood (harvesting, peeling, shaping)
*
Earthen plasters
*
Recycled materials
*
Earthen floors
*
Rock walls
Students will learn the basics of all these techniques
and will acquire a good knowledge of how to apply
them.
APPROPRIATE TECHNOLOGY FOR THE HOME
September 14 - 20, 2003
It is truly a joy to discover that there are simple,
easy to build technologies out there that can fulfill
some of our basic needs while minimizing the damaging
effects on the environment and our pocket book. From
heating your home efficiently to providing hot showers
or preserving your food, gathering water or sensible
solutions to deal with your "waste", we will help you
understand how you can build and implement these
appropriate technologies easily into your life.
The following technologies will be built or
demonstrated on site:
*
Composting toilets under $25
*
Solar electric systems
*
Solar hot water
*
Very efficient wood burning mass heating stoves under
$100
*
Earthen ovens
*
Solar ovens
*
Passive solar design for your home
*
Geo thermal cooling
*
Rain water gathering
NATURAL DESIGN, NATURAL BUILDING
September 21 - 27, 2003
Do you live in a house that doesn't feel good? Are you
considering a renovation? Are you exploring the
posibility of building a new home? During this week we
will discuss, in depth, how we can make our homes
truly functional, natural, non-toxic and beautiful. We
will again see that we can achieve this even with the
most minimal budget. Students will get a chance to
experience several different natural building
techniques, as well as work and get feedback on their
own home's design or problem areas.
Students will discover:
*
How to create spaces that work well
*
How to design or re-design a house
*
How to guide a building or renovation process
*
How to integrate passive solar design
*
How to master plan a site, yard, etc.
*
How to use healthy materials
*
How to deal with windows, lights and ventilation
*
How to choose furniture and other decorative features
All these topics will be discussed in a practical
manner with many exercises and demonstrations. These
are truly life skills that we believe are essential
for creating a home that gives you the greatest
potential to be happy.

There is an exciting project underway that
you may be interested in! Some of you are familiar with last
year's Natural Building Convergence... well this year the Convergence
has evolved! The Village Building Convergence will be a similar
ten-day event in May, only this time we are transforming five whole
street intersections into public squares! Each
"Intersection Repair" will be founded on permaculture and
natural building principles. The Convergence is a collaboration
between Southeast Uplift Neighborhood Program, The City Repair
Project, KBOO Community Radio 90.7fm, the Portland Permaculture Guild
and many others!
The event is May 9-18, but there are many
opportunities for permaculturists and natural builders to be involved
in the planning, designing and pre-Convergence site prep. We are
currently looking for folks to help with the design workshops that we
will be facilitating with the five selected Intersection Repair
neighborhood groups. There will be a total of 10 workshops (two
per neighborhood) between Feb. 18 and March 16!
I recommend checking out our website for
more information: www.cityrepair.org/vbc. If you are interested
in getting involved with the Village Building Convergence in any way,
please let me know!
Super!
Jenny Leis
Below is an email that I sent out last
week... it explains a bit more about the workshops...
Hello designers, permaculturists, natural
builders, facilitators, site coordinators and other
visionaries!
I am writing to you because you have
expressed interest in one (or more) of the aspects of the Village
Building Convergence involved in the design workshops that we will be
doing with each of the five selected Intersection Repair
sites.
I will send out a more introductory and
"welcome to the VBC" email soon (to the whole VBC
announcement list) but I am writing now because we need to have a
meeting very soon about planning these workshops! I still want
to have personal conversations with each of you, so please call/email
if you feel confused about this process!
As a bit of an overview working
backwards, we want to have all of the five designs for the
Intersection Repairs finalized by March 16, leaving enough time for
the Dept. of Transportation to review and permit them. That
means between February 18, when we finalize the five intersection
sites, and March 16 we need to have two design workshops with each of
the five sites!
At each workshop we will
have:
--one or more facilitators to keep the
workshop flowing and support the group with creating a Big Vision and
then working it down to what is do-able in May
--one or more designers-- people who have
an expertise in creating graphic illustrations of the group's ideas
and who have some knowledge about what is possible (architects,
landscape architects etc)
--one or more permaculturists who can
guide the group with creating a whole-system/environmentally friendly
design
--one or more natural builders who can
assist with this aspect of the designs
--artists (maybe in the second of the two
workshops once we have an idea of what kind of artwork the group
wants)
--Site Coordinators (the people who will
be involved in the entire process for each site)
--other?
We are calling a meeting on Tuesday,
February 11 at 6:30pm at Southeast Uplift (3534 SE Main;
503-232-0010) to discuss the organization of these design
workshops and to fill each of the above roles! (By the way, if
you are seriously interested in this, please think about keeping your
weekends open between 2/18 and 3/16 so that we can schedule the
workshops!)
Please RSVP! You can email me at
jenny@... or call 503-232-0010 x25. Feel free to
ask questions or give me some advice about organizing these
workshops!!
Thank you everyone, and I'm sorry again
for sending this out before I am able to talk with each one of
you!

> FEE
> The main intention of this practicum is to increase
> awareness and multiply whatís happening with natural

> Because
> of this it is requested that you get partial
> sponsorship to help cover your fee. Reason being...
> getting financial support from your community of

> that
> more people will know that this kind of thing is
> happening. The 10 week fee may be more than what you
> are used to spending. Sponsorship from others will
> reduce the stress of having to come up with this
> money
> yourself, while allowing you to participate and
> cover
> the costs. It also means that in return for
> sponsorship, you may have a workshop, presentation
> and/or demonstration project lined up upon your
> return
> home, giving you an immediate opportunity to teach,
> spread the word and get more examples of natural
> building on the ground in your community.
>
> The total fee for the 10 weeks is a sliding-scale of
> $2,200 - $1,800 (You decide. If you give what you
> can,
> the scale usually balances itself.) The fee includes
> tuition, the events (Build Here Now, Kleiwerks
> Training, Permaculture Gathering, living at
> Earthaven), most camping and yummy, organic food.
> The
> fee does not include when we are on the road between
> projects (about 15 days out of the 10 weeks). The
> cost
> for our road food, camping and gas will be shared
> amongst us as we go.**
>
> BREAKDOWN OF FEE (per person)

> special arrangements with them.
> **We will travel in one or two vehicles. If you have

place at several inner Portland locations. Visionary guests will
share their knowledge on many topics of sustainable culture. So far,
guests include Starhawk, Richard Register, Joeseph Kennedy, and
Janell Kapoor.
The week's events will culminate with a celebration on May 18th. We
will be sending you more updates as this project unfolds. Please
also check in with our website at www.cityrepair.org/vbc.
2) Intersection Repair locations
So where will these projects be? As you probably know, last December
we put out a request for proposals, inviting Portland neighbors to
reclaim their public places. Five neighborhood groups responded with
interest in creating Intersection Repair (IR) sites for this year's
Village Building Convergence. On February 18th, we met them to hear
their proposals. What a night! It was very exciting to hear all of
their presentations and ideas about how to create these special
places in our neighborhoods.
We are committed to supporting the development of all five
intersections that responded to our proposal:
* SE 19th and Alder/Washington; Buckman Neighborhood
* SE 47th and Ivon; Richmond Neighborhood
* SE 32nd and Grant; Richmond Neighborhood
* SE Tamarack and Hickory; Ladd's Addition; Hosford-Abernathy Neighborhood
* SE 48th and Bybee; Brentwood-Darlington Neighborhood
We will be supporting each of these groups to continue having
conversations among their neighbors and manifesting their visions
into reality. How exciting-- sharing our talents and visions with
each other to co-create our neighborhoods!
3) Volunteer information
We still have many needs for volunteer help. Now that the sites for
the VBC have been selected, we are in need of many enthusiastic
volunteers! At the moment, we are actively seeking site coordinators
and folks for our donations committee! There is a detailed list of
other volunteer possibilities at
http://www.cityrepair.org/vbc/volunteer.html. Or email our stellar
volunteer coordinator Ashlee at vbc@....
This is an amazing opportunity to gain experience in coordination and
take part in a truly revolutionary event.
4) Upcoming meetings

For people who have a serious interest in
organizing this project!
6) Spirals of this project
Almost 300 people have already shared their interest in getting
involved with the VBC! This project provides many opportunities for
individuals and organizations to contribute their resources,
expertise and vision. As a result, many people are finding ways to
bring the VBC to new dimensions. Some of these "spirals" beyond the
five Intersection Repairs include:
--Six different groups of graduate and undergraduate students at PSU
in departments of Urban Planning, Community Development and Education
are working on projects related to the VBC.
--A community of N/NE Portlanders is forming to create Intersection
Repairs. For more information, join the new listserve by sending a
blank email to nepdxcrossroads-subscribe@....
--We are working closely with the Portland Department of
Transportation, the Bureau of Planning and the Office of Sustainable
Development to institutionalize the Intersection Repair process!
--Beyond the five intersections noted above, many more are beginning
to bloom. There may even be two or three other Intersection Repairs
that begin during the VBC as well! One of these includes a potential
non-residential intersection at SE 8th and Ankeny, where KBOO
Community Radio, Citybikes Cooperative and Voz Workers Rights
Education Project may join powers to create an intersection for
community organizers, activists, day laborers, and more!
--So much more to share!
Again, please keep checking our website for information, meeting
updates and to find out how to get involved.
www.cityrepair.org/vbc
We hope you will join us in creating a spectacular event, a world we
want to live in.
In Community,
The VBC organizing enthusiasts

Hello all,
just heard about a free workshop at Environmental Building
Supply in Portland. It's this Saturday, March 1st from ten until
noon and it's all about how to do wall glazing and painting using
Aglaia natural paints. Agreed that they're imported from
germany, but they're also the most environmental paints around.
And stunningly beautiful colors and textures are possible, too.
So if want to go give a call to Janet Kennedy at EBS at
503.222.3881 to reserve a space. And give her a call and show
your interest and they will offer them more often.
ciao,
Joshua

Achieve Energy Performance Goals for New Building Design
Attend the next "Achieve Energy Performance Goals for New Building Design" Internet presentation on Thursday, March 13 2:00-2:45 PM, EST. This presentation describes how to use ENERGY STAR's software tool Target Finder, and how it complements energy simulation modeling and the LEED rating system. Target Finder takes rudimentary building and occupant data and yields the annual energy use value required if the building is to perform in the top 25 percent of U.S. building stock. The talk will also present strategies that will enhance performance and illustrates how building owners and designers can readily evaluate and achieve energy-based design targets. Decision-makers will learn how to set realistic goals for energy use and compare simulated results to their target. It will show designers how to compare energy simulation results to top performing buildings using Target Finder. The Target Finder and integrated design assistance has been developed for office buildings and other medium to large scale buildings such as schools, hospitals and hotels.
ENERGY STAR also offers many other presentations on such topics as: ENERGY STAR -- An Overview, Benchmarking Tool/Portfolio Manager, Money for Your Energy Upgrades, The Five-Stage Approach to Building Upgrades, Cost Savings through ENERGY STAR Purchasing, and Monitor Power Management. To see the schedule or to register, visithttp://energystar.imeet.com/regeval/calendar.asp. There is no cost for participation. You simply view the presentation on your office computer and converse with the presenter using a toll-free telephone line. Once you register, your confirmation information will appear on the screen. Please wait for this screen to appear and print it out, as it will be needed to access the presentations. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Ecoroofs Everywhere has another project. The fun
continues
this weekend on People's Food Coop (20th and SE
Tibbetts) ecoroof! Work parties will be happening on
Saturday (3/15) and Sunday (3/16). On Saturday the
work begins at 9am and will go until noon. So you can
help us with the roof and attend the peace rally. If
you are not attending the rally please stay with a few
of us in the afternoon. On Sunday we will be working
on the ecoroof again from 9 am until ??? Probably no
later than 4 pm. Please come by whenever you can.
This is an excellent chance to have some hands on
experience actually laying down the soil or planting
the plants on the ecoroof!
This will also be an educational opportunity. On the
ground we will have a mock ecoroof with all of the
layers cut away so people can really learn and
understand what an ecoroof is. So bring yourself and
your friends (especially those that have never seen an
ecoroof before) and have fun at this ecoroof
workparty. Please forward this on to anyone who is
interested. If you have questions please email me at
rainsystem@... or call me at 503-236-7984.
Thanks, Brad.
