Hi Folks,

Does anyone know where I can get a patch from the 1997 JOTA? It's
the only one I'm missing from the 9 years I've done JOTA for our Cub
Scouts and Boy Scouts. BSA National doesn't have any more and it
turns out they ran out early that particular year. Anyone care to
part with their 1997 patch?

Thanks and 73,

Bob, K6ZZ

Bob,

There are many patch trading websites on the net. Go to your search
engine and search on patch traders.

Thanks Mike. I have searched and found several possible prospects
but have been unable to find anything yet. Hopefully I'll stumble
across someone soon.

Don't Forget

I believe the BSA HQ would like a JOTA report (in addition to the ARRL) from
all participating stations by the end of the Nov.
This is so a final tally can be sent to World HQ for their report.

I know I shouldn't be talking about forgetting because homework may stop me
from reporting this year. It would be helpful if we could email the reports
in instead of snail mail.

I concur with Alan's comments. From what I understand, only about
4000 JOTA contacts in the USA were reported last year. I believe that
JOTA in the US is being seriously under-reported with those operators
working out of their homes or other non-camporee locations not
reporting at all. Telling this to this List is probably preaching to
the choir, but all of us should make an effort to contact other
operators known to have participated in JOTA to implore them to
submit a report. Information/reports should be submitted to:
http://www.arrl.org/ead/jotalog/ .

Sorry 'bout that. I mixed up my bureaucracies. BSA doesn't have any
formal site for submission of JOTA reports, last I heard, but Roy
Moyer WD8JKV (RMoyer@...) at National appreciates a narrative
report of how many Scouts, Cubs, Explorers, etc. made contacts or
otherwise were "processed" through a JOTA station.

You can get it directly from the Boy Scouts of America's web page.  In fact, this link will take you to the sample form.

 http://www.bsa.scouting.org/international/jota-samp.pdf

Here is some of the info that the BSA has on their site:

Brief reports are requested. Download the sample report
format on this fact sheet. This report should include:

Unit number and local council name and number
     Amateur call used
     Calls heard and worked
     Number of participants
     Interesting incidents and exchanges, etc.
Photos with captions (small group, Scout at mike)

Send reports and photos to the JOTA coordinator at the BSA
national office address no later than November 30, 2001.
These reports will be used to prepare a United States report
that is sent to the World Scout Bureau.

The History Channel is announcing that "The Return of LST-325" will
be shown at 7PM EST (0000Z) on Veteran's Day Sunday 11 November 2001.
Amateur operators may recall that the saga of the old WWII vessel
started in July 2000 in Greece when a number of elderly Navy veterans
rebuilt the ship and sailed it to Mobile, Alabama, arriving in
January 2001 amid considerable public enthusiasm and a little
controversy. Amateur radio station WW2LST, operating from LST-325
kept the world posted on the ship's progress as it crossed the
Mediterranean and Atlantic Oceans.

Details may be found at : http://www.lstmemorial.org/ .

Sorry for the subject line, but was just at Best Buy and ALL of the FRS
radio MFRS are now selling 5W (5 Mile) FRS/gmrs* radios. Notice the
"gmrs" in small print and the asterix which you have to search on all six
sides of the box to see in very tiny print (license required).

These are going for $99 a pair with all channels and CTCSS and 5 Watts.
And remember that there are GMRS repeaters in most places.. THus, WHO
NEEDS HAM RADIO when you can buy an HT with repeater coverage at office
depot or best buy? (Thank heavens we still have HF)

My personal response to this commercialization of WIRELESS began a few
months ago when I began taking a USGS topographical map to my kids SCOUTS
and SCHOOL Club meetings and getting the kids to put pins in the map to
identify their QTH. Soon it was clear that many if not most were
clustered well within a mile of each other. MOST already had "walkie
talkies" (FRS).

My objective here is to set up a "NET" time when they can call and find
others in their group on the air. By educating them FIRST before we begin
these nets, each kid will be assigned a "callsign". For my kids scout
troop it will be "995-AJ" or on initial call up, "This is Troop-995-AJ".
A combination of the troop number and the kids initials. For his school
radio club we are forming (Severn School) it will be "Severn-AJ"

We will practice calling and net operation in the clubs and at the
meetings before we do any ON-AIR operation. THus when NET time comes, we
will have an orderly group of kids that can use the radio properly.

IF YOU DONT TRAIN THEM FIRST, you will have bedlam! Kids want to make
noises and just yell into the radio. We must educate them first. Radios
can be valuable if people konw how to us them. As HAM radio operators we
must rise to this challenge or soon even FRS will be useless...

I stongly feel that getting them to use CALLSIGNS is the first BIG step:

TO give their FRS callsigns some significance and permanence and to
encourage them to use them, One of their first club projects is to
use a computer to print a QSL looking like card with their "callsign" on
it. When they begin to identify with that call, then I am certain we will
see them use them and be proud of them.

Then hook-line-and-sinker we reel them in to our local KIDS amateur radio
club... to upgrade... and get a real callsign...

P.S. By organizing a radio sub-group in each group that my kids are
involved with and other neighboring troops (all of which overlap back
into the same geographical area) soon we will have enough kids in the
area and on the air to achieve critical mass of being able to raise a
QSO without the organized NET. THIS is our farming grounds for future
HAM radio operators...

Many in HAM radio do not agree with this approach. But we have to do
something....

Your test worked but you can see the horrible ads that Yahoo attaches to HTML messages.  If you post in plain test you only get an unobtrusive text message.  Unless there is a particular reason why HTML is needed one should always select "Plain Text" when posting to a Yahoo reflector.  Just click on "Format" to change the format.

Because it is more important to get them on the air first and teach them
good radio procedures (even if it is FRS). I have formed lots of kids
interest by brining a large USGS topo map to scout meetings and letting
the kids put pins on their QTH. Surprising, many live easily within a
mile of each other and can QSO with FRS.

I also just formed a club at my kids Middle school and got 20 kids signed
up to take an afternoon after school Radio Course. Again, first step will
be to get them on the map with pins and then participating in an FRS
on-air weekly night net. AFTER having spent a whole session talking about
procedures and use of callsigns.

Each kids homework assignment is to make a QSL card with his FRS callsign.
We assign them CALLS using their TROOP number and initials. For the
school, they use the school initials and grade. Thus my son's 6th grad
call is SS6AJB and his troop call is 995AJB. In order to make sure there
is a critical mass of people on the air at "net" time, its the same
channel for ALL these overlaping groups so that everyone will find someone
within a mile of their house.

Then after the newness of that wears off and they see the HAM HT demos,
then they will all want to upgrade to get greater range by becoming a HAM.
But it is imperitive that they get used to using CALLSIGNS always. This
is step 1.

The rest will follow...

In view of the enormous increase in email virus distribution in
recent weeks you should consider changing the permissions of this
list to remove attachments before sending out emails from the list.
This is for the safety of all list members and is good practice.

What would be better safety for all list members, is to get an
Anti-virus program. Norton Anti-virus is a very good one.
Good practice for everyone on the list is to keep their Anti-virus
program up to date. With Norton Anti-virus you can set it to update
automatically at any interval you so choose. I would recomend that you
set the interval daily if you want to have the highest protection.

I have been running Norton Antivirus for several years Rick. It is set to
update via
live update. I run a full scan on the PC every Friday and despite all this
I have recently
had new viruses get through the protection. They got through before live
update had
added their virus signature to my virus definitions file.

Mailing lists are particularily vunerable to virus distribution especially
if they are large
lists. To remove the capability of sending email attachments via a list is
a sensible
precaution and prevents accidental distribution by list members who don't
realise
that their system is infected. I would always advocate the use of good
antivirus
protection.

Actually folks. The best way to get around the email viruses is to stop running the software it's designed to exploit or keep your software running at the latest patch level.
Most of these email viruses exploit errors in various Microsoft email programs. I have personally chosen not to run Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Outlook Express or Microsoft Messenger
since these are attacked very frequently. Because of this I have had a problem with only one virus and I was still able to recover from that.
My personal emailer is the Netscape Mail program and I'm considering purchasing Lotus Notes.

Subject: Tower removal near Chicago

I am looking for some help in the Chicago, IL area. My niece bought a house in the western suburbs that has an old 30-40 foot tower. From her description it sounds like an older tower used to mount a TV antenna. I am not sure if she said it had an antenna on it or not.

Is there someone out there that could help me find a ham who might be willing or have the equipment to take the tower down? I have no idea if it will be reusable.  My niece has contacted a local tower guy and for this newly married couple the cost was prohibitive.

Any contact or even a friend of a friend or local club I can contact would be greatly appreciated.
