Hi Jim, et. al...

A database for this year's event hadn't been created in our group so I
liberated the other group's data and applied it to a new and updated
table. You may store data in either or both groups but chatting about
your plans has proven to be problematic on the other group as its
membership is 100% moderated, 100% of the time and some messages sit for
weeks before being posted. Many have made suggestions to the group
owner as to ways to address the situation but those suggestions have
so-far fallen on deaf ears.

Even worse than sitting for weeks before being posted, on [JOTAskedbook], they
can be censored for no apparent reason. I once posted a query about D-Star
operations for JOTA and it was censored for being "off topic". The owner PA1BAR
refused to even discuss it. I no longer bother with this group.

For the past few years our members have placed a JOTA Stations database
log in the Database section of ScoutRadio. One had not been placed
there yet so I simply grabbed the station data located in the other

placed it our database files section

that's slightly modified to fit the data that I lifted.

Hi Jon,

I'm gonna guess that Al was referring to the new JOTA database at www.k2bsa.net,
specifically at http://www.scouting.org/jota/registered_stations.aspx

Radio Scouting has greater recognition at the National BSA since Jim Wilson,
K5ND, became the National JOTA Organizer and K2BSA now has some official web
presence. Jim is Chairman of the National Radio Scouting Committee at BSA. He
is also the Volunteer Chairman for the National Jamboree to be held in 2013.

Jim has posted on ScoutRadio several times.

Hi Frank and Walter.

Saw it - forgot about it. It's a great resource and goes beyond the
confines of our little group, here. I placed a hypertext link to its
anchor page http://www.scouting.org/jota.aspx on this group's home page,
some months ago after the ARRL redesigned their site.

Thanks for the clarification.

To all: I just uploaded a picture of a crystal radio project I'll be building
with our scout troop at JOTA. It is a VERY simple, low-cost easy-to-build
design.

The radio is built on an 8" piece of pine 1x6" plank.

The coil is build on a 5.5" square piece of cereal-box cardboard, with seven
radial cuts down to a 2" circle in the middle. It is wound with 48 turns of 24
AWG enameled wire in a 'spider-web' style. A tap at 24 turns is also brought
out. When done, a piece of tape is placed on each edge for reinforcement.

A 0.5" wide piece of corrugated cardboard is placed on two opposite edges on the
bottom of the coil, and the coil assembly fastened to the breadboard using four
thumbtacks in the corners of the coil board. The corrugated cardboard strips
space the coil up from the board.

The radio is tuned with a 4" square piece of aluminum foil taped to the bottom
of a 4"x6.5" piece of cereal-box cardboard, at one end, while 1/2" of the other
end is bent up for a handle. This is slid under the coil.

At the opposite end from the slider, four #6 sheet metal screws are driven into
the breadboard. Three have fahnestock clips, one just has a brass washer under
its head.

The rightmost fahnestock has the coil center tap under it, stripped and tinned.
This is the connector for a long antenna.

The middle fahnestock clip has the outer coil lead, stripped and tinned, under
the clip. This is the short antenna connector.

The left fahnestock clip has the inside coil lead stripped and tinned, under the
clip. This is the ground connection.

Between the short antenna and ground clips, a fixed capacitor is placed. Since
this rig will only tune one half of the AM band, you should pick the cap to
cover a strong local station. 68 pF will cover the high side of the AM band,
220 will cover the middle, and 470 will cover the bottom. Place the capacitor
leads under the fahnestock clip.

A 47k resistor and leads from a ceramic (crystal) earphone go underneath the
screw at the far left and the grounf clip.

A 1N34A diode bridges between the middle fahnestock clip and the far left screw.

Total parts cost will be about $5, and it should work pretty well with a decent
antenna.

When I was a child, I had a crystal set consisting of a germanium diode and coil of enamel wire about the diameter of a toilet roll. The enamel was sanded off just locally so that a variable pointer could make contact (i.e. a variable coil). That was it! A good antenna in the attic and a ground connection to the water pipes and my earphones almost deafened me.

Greetings to the group,

A question was asked of me if there would be IRLP usage during Jamboree on the
Air this year. In previous years I had gotten permission to use a local
repeater with IRLP capabilities and just trolled around other nodes to make
contacts. Last year I contacted Jeff, N4MSE who is custodian of the Dallas IRLP
reflector to allow us to use a sub channel for JOTA.

I again asked this year and was given permission to use the main channel 0 of
the 345 Dallas Reflector as a JOTA meeting point. The Dallas reflector is not
as heavily used as some of the other reflector main channels and so this is a
good start point for IRLP connections. I would suggest contacting the trustee
of the local IRLP machine for permission to use it for the day for JOTA
activities. Then dial up 9450 to connect to the Dallas Reflector. On most open
systems, all you need to do is enter that number and if the connection is
available it will be established. 73 is used to disconnect.

To see what nodes are currently connected to all the IRLP reflectors at
http://irlp.g4eid.co.uk/status/all_reflectors.html and you can drill down to
just the Dallas Reflector by clicking on it's hyperlink in mid page which brings
you to http://irlp.g4eid.co.uk/status/ref945.html. The page will automatically
refresh or just hit F5. You will see your local node show up in the list. It
may take a minute or so for it to update though so be patient. Channels are
0-9. You will see channelos with no activity. AS I write this Channels 0,
2,3,8 and 9 are empty. If you find a node city on Channel 0 you want to
communicate with, request for the station connected to move to one of the
available channels. If we spread out, more of us can use this mode for JOTA.

Of course you can do direct node to node connections and sometimes random
calling will provide interesting and rewarding results. Nodes in some areas of
the country seem to be friendlier to this random activity than others.

If you plan to be active on a node, (We in Dallas will be using the 442.025
repeater with 127PL to connect to the Dallas Reflector so local stations feel
free to jump on and join the fun. Node number is 3695.

Keep a 3rd party traffic agreement list handy so as to keep things legal. Have
a good time and hope to see you on the air.

Other than the internet, there is another way to find out what is the
nearest IRLP, Echolink or Alstar node near you out in the field or on the
road. Just send an APRS message to AVRS (the Automatic Voice Relay System)
and indicate in the message a ? or a ?I, or ?E or ?A to ask what is the
nearest VOIP repeater or link near you. It will respond with range and
bearing as well as frequency and tone. This is all part of the integration

Hello Folks...
Well it's one week to the big event...

And the new website for GB2GP Gilwell Park is just about ready! It
still needs some content adding, and it won't completely come alive
until next weekend, but it's up and running.

http://www.gb2gp.org.uk

Over JOTA the website will feature live frequencies, updated
automatically from the rigs and our online logbook, again updated
automatically every couple of minutes.
There will be at least one live webcam, controllable across the web so
you can pan round the shack and see what's happening.
Our SSTV will upload received and transmitted pictures onto the
server, and the weather satellite receiver will upload all the
received weather images, including the progressive composite images.
The Scouts visiting the station will also be able to add to our live
news section, as well as creating their own pages as we go through the
weekend.
Need to know if you can get a contact to the UK at a given time and
freq? Well there's no guarantee, but have a look at the propagation
page to see the predicted activity.

We also have Facebook and Twitter (@GB2GP) feeds... Please 'Like' or
'Follow' us to keep up to date with what we're up to...
Links to both from the home page.

Can you help fill in the gaps? We're trying to document the history of
Radio Scouting at Gilwell Park. If you are able to add to the history
pages, please drop me a line.

73 and look forward to speaking to you over JOTA from GB2GP
