Got mine by FedEx today.

I was expecting educational materials but I got the comic book. Lots of
copies of each edition but no educational materials.

Hi Stephen,

There is no RadioScouting Forum; however, the ARRL will have an area set aside,
as they did last year, in the ARRL EXPO. Because of the limited size, it's
difficult to have a gathering there. I've not heard of any other planned
gathering at Dayton.

This Discussion Group (ScoutRadio at Yahoo) is the best place to ask questions
and bring up issues and topics.

I try to stop by the ARRL Scout area several times and often run into other
Scouters that I've met on the air or on the web.

Hi Thomas,

"2meter radio" needs a little more definition; however, if it's a receiver, you
might consider the Ramsey Kit, see
http://www.ramseyelectronics.com/cgi-bin/commerce.exe?preadd=action&key=FR-SERIE\
S

It's $50 and from my experience you can probably gather up all the parts and
build it yourself for twice the price.

A number of the 2 meter transceiver kits that used to be around are no longer
sold.

I would suggest doing a bunch of web searches or looking around the kits area of
www.ac6v.com for some useful leads.

If it's CW that you have in mind, you may find some simple circuits used by
DFers (Radio Direction Finding/Fox Hunting). Also, in the QST archives or older
ARRL Handbooks, you should be able to find some vacuum tube receivers and
transmitters (AM/CW). Don't know what you have in mind for use of this radio in
the "Merit Badge session" (Is this Radio MB?).

Frank. Yes it is for the Radio Merit badge. When I said 2meter I was talking 144-148mhz. I want to show them how to build a radio and it was just a project that I wanted to do after I got my ticket.

Hi, Tom... I'm not sure you're going to be able to find one nowadays for 2m FM. I've found several kits
for "QRP", or 5-watt transmitters and recievers in kit form, but not for 2m.

Several years ago, I built a Ten-Tec 1209 transverter. This converted 6m to 2m and back again. You set
your radio to 146.52 FM and it came out 52.52 FM, and if you set 144.125, you got 50.125. What I'm saying
is that this transverter kit still took around 12 hours to build, and then I did one thing wrong and I had to send
it to Ten-Tec and they corrected the problem at no charge. (wave of hat to them)

But the radios are synthesized and require surface-mount construction, and I'm just afraid that it's beyond
the reach of most folks to properly assemble a 2m kit. I hope I'm wrong, but I just don't see any 2m kits
out there, altho maybe a single-frequency crystal-controlled model?

I would think seriously about the QRP kits. I know they're CW only (maybe some have phone, don't know),
but if you could prearrange with someone to be on frequency, even with a random-length antenna and a good
water pipe connection, you should be able to reach a few miles easy...

Anyone fancy a visit to Mozambique in October? I am running a DXpedition
to Bilene which is a costal resort on the Indian Ocean 150km north of
Maputu. We fly out from Heathrow on 13th October to Johannesburg and
drive up to Mozambique. We plan to run a station for Jamboree on the Air
with local scouts on the weekend of 16th/17th October and we will enter
a station for CQWW SSB over the weekend of 30th/31st October. There
will be plenty of opportunity for individuals to operate under their own
C91 callsigns and if you fancy sun bathing on an Indian Ocean beach in
late African spring there will be plenty of opportunity for that too.
There are a few places on the team still available. If you want further
details check out the CQ-DX African Safaris web site at

Hello, Tony.

Welcome to the ham radio brotherhood (and sisterhood, of course). I waited until I was 48 years old to get my license, even though I became interested when I was in my early teens. I know you’ll have a great time mixing radio and Scouting. Makes me wish we had a senior-level ham radio-Scouter in our district!

Good Morning, Tony!

Welcome to Amateur Radio! I've been a ham for far too long, but I was
introduced to it through Scouting as a kid since my first Senior Patrol Leader
was ham.

Amateur Radio and Scouting are perfect together! Here in Mercer Area District,
the local hams get together and offer a Radio Merit Badge Day to 60 local Scouts
each year. There's always a waiting list to attend! We've had ham Astronauts,
Nobel prize winners, and others show up to help promote it.

This is a win-win-win-win event. The Scouts get a merit badge and stay active
in Scouting. The hams get to sell their hobby to Scouts. BSA gains more
supporters among the 20 non-Scouter adults. And our overworked local leaders get
a canned program for a weekend that they just have to drop the Scouts off at.

Details on how hams in your district can offer a radio merit badge course on a
large scale or small can be found at http://k2gw.tripod.com/radiomeritbadge/

I'll be at the Dayton Hamvention where we have a booth sponsored by ARRL where
we try to get more hams involved in offering radio merit badge, JOTA and other
Amateur Radio activites to the Scouts in their area. Perhaps I'll see you
there!

Stephen,

Do you have any frequencies for use at the Jamboree by participants?

VHF/UHF FM and perhaps HF SBB for HFPack might be of interest.

I’ll be a 1st ASM in Troop 505 and will have gear for HF through UHF all modes and we have about a dozen Hams in our Jamboree Troop which is also posing an interesting challenge for charging HTs.

Also, what is/are the on-site repeater frequency or frequencies at the Jamboree and where is it going to be located within A. P. Hill?

Yours in Scouting!

With “about a dozen Hams,” congratulations…

Two Meters: 145.17 -600KHz shift - monitored 24/7 - Jamboree Net 1900 each evening
70 cm: 442.90 +5MHz shift
Note: (both) 100Hz PL tone…

The above is the K2BSA repeater – in the past it was located at the K2BSA demo site.  I don’t know (for sure) for 2010.  K2BSA (not on many/any maps…)  is near the OA Show (see Google earth attachment)

All simplex freq’s are fair game.  I had no problem finding a freq in 2005 for me to use with my two boys – to find them when I had a day off.

You can re-charge at K2BSA – but is more then a mile from sub camp 5…

I am sure if you talked with the sub camp “people” you may be able to set up a charging station at sub camp HQ.  (see Fred, T501 2nd ASM, as he knows many of the sub camp 5 staff – and push Fred to go to the license classes…  I think he is 2nd ASM?)

Sub camp 5 also has a bathhouse (adults and youth?) that should also have 115VAC – someone would need to watch the chargers (a good reason for rapid charging).

My son, KB3LUF, is in Troop 501 and I plan on sending him off with a good supply of AA batteries to use in an AA battery pack for his HT.  He WILL be running APRS from his HT so that I have “at least” one station at Jambo running APRS for the demo tent to show…  The Yeasu VX-8’s are APRS (144.390) ready and K2BSA will have a number of digi’s on site, too.

I have thought about sending him off with (or bringing it to him) a 10 watt solar panel and gell cell to recharge his HT.  A fully charged gell cell battery could charge a number of HT’s before it (gell cell) needed to be re-charged (at bathhouse?).

Stephen,

Well that is awesome!  We’ll be nearby your son’s Troop and I will rattle your buddy about getting his license.  I upgraded on a lark to Extra at the 2001 Jamboree when my son and his buddy wanted me to join them when they went to take the exam.  Thanks for the info. I found a REALLY NICE kit for SM/ASMs to consider that provides 3A at 12V in full sunlight for $200 from Harbor Freight.  I bought two and they seem to be pretty cool.  If a Scout wanted to bring such a thing, it would have to be approved by his Scoutmaster, as the footprint is about 4 x 4 ft and needs to be put in a non-hazard area.  We’re going to place it in the gateway area which has an opening to sunlight, but protected space.  The solar charging kit has two 5W 12V CFLs, a charge controller that has outputs for 12, 9, 6 and 3V as well as a 5V USB port!

I’ll have batteries and also a complete ham station in a box.  Antennas are going to be lower than 10ft because of the new safety rules (my sons were in 537 in 2005 and it was not a pretty sight).

Please pass along my contact info to your son and let him know that T505 has lots of hams!

Thanks & 73,

Gordon Beattie, W2TTT

Hello All,
Why not take it to the next step! Get the scouts that earn the radio merit badge on the air! If the badge is taught right way the scouts have the majority of information they need to pass their Technician class ticket. I have also developed a way for my local Scouts to get a 2m radio to get on the air. I worked with my local ham club ( North Hills Amateur Radio Club, www.NHARC.org ) to develop and sponsor the program. Here is a link to the application which you can adapt for your local area " http://www.nharc.org/links/ScoutNetAward2.pdf ". I would love to do this on a national basis but I am having trouble finding a national sponsor. By the scouts earning this award it keeps them involved in Scouting, the community, and Amateur Radio. All three very important things we can all agree on! I will be coming to Dayton this year if anyone would like to meet to discuss this. My email is N3ZX@....

PS. We have seven Scouts with their Tech License and working on the award!

Good Morning, Tony!

Welcome to Amateur Radio! I've been a ham for far too long, but I was introduced to it through Scouting as a kid since my first Senior Patrol Leader was ham.

Amateur Radio and Scouting are perfect together! Here in Mercer Area District, the local hams get together and offer a Radio Merit Badge Day to 60 local Scouts each year. There's always a waiting list to attend! We've had ham Astronauts, Nobel prize winners, and others show up to help promote it.

This is a win-win-win-win event. The Scouts get a merit badge and stay active in Scouting. The hams get to sell their hobby to Scouts. BSA gains more supporters among the 20 non-Scouter adults. And our overworked local leaders get a canned program for a weekend that they just have to drop the Scouts off at.

Details on how hams in your district can offer a radio merit badge course on a large scale or small can be found at http://k2gw.tripod.com/radiomeritbadge/

I'll be at the Dayton Hamvention where we have a booth sponsored by ARRL where we try to get more hams involved in offering radio merit badge, JOTA and other Amateur Radio activites to the Scouts in their area. Perhaps I'll see you there!
