Good morning team!

I have been able to tentatively obtain a slot for a Scouting forum at Dayton.
Two are available on Friday - one morning, one afternoon, and one is available
on Saturday.

I think Saturday is best, to allow the hard-core flea market folks ample time to
graze through the bargains in the parking lot (my wife usually has a different
name for the stuff I bring home) and Saturday could possibly have a better draw
for a forum.

So, here's my propossal:

If we agree (this is dangerous to ask....), I'll give the nod to the Convention
Forum team for the Saturday slot (9:15 to 10:15 AM local time), but I'm going to
need help with putting together an agenda for our forum.

If anyone is interested in helping me with this effort, please let me know.
Also, topic suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I need to confirm our intent to hold a forum by the end of this week.

Yours in Scouting de John K9XT (Troop 202, Carmel, IN and K2BSA 2010 team
member)

There is a long standing offer on eBAY that sells 2 "crystal earphones" for $4
which is $2 per crystal radio. I think he has over 100 in stock and I suspect
he will combine shipping for larger orders:

150275619629 is the eBAY number

was justify either an audio transformer ( about $4 ) to match the impedance or
an audio amplifier ( less than $1 in parts and another $1 for a battery ). That
would have blown the tradition of a crystal radio. So I grumbled a bunch at
home, and then got over it for the presentation for the cubs.

K2BSA group     Joe Dunphy, K9MBA, Clifton, NJ. I am helping a disabled scout troop through the Radio Merit Badge, and they should be able to participate in this historic radio event. Our ham radio club, ArcSquared, is run through the Red Cross Disaster Services facility in Fairfield, NJ, and they will likely help the scouts as well. Two of our scouts were just written up in the national Elks magazine, which reaches almost one million Elks.

A few of us Oklahomans are going to be on the air today giving some scouts a taste of Ham Radio. It is currently 35 degrees and we got a bunch of snow so we need to dry out the radios with several QSO's.

We will be hanging around the 60's on HF and maybe on the ISS if there is a good pass.  I haven't calulated that as of yet. Start time will be around 9:00 am CDT.

You can send a page to 405 558-6803 if you need or want to schedule a contact.  callsign will be WB5BSA.

On 18 or 19 July we will attempt the first annual GOlden Packet attempt to relay
a packet message all 2000 miles along the Appalachian Trail using 14 temporary
APRS or packet. Once the 14 relay teams are in place, and the golden packets
have been successsful, then any hiker along the trail can attempt to send
messages as well.

We need volunteers for the teams.

Hello Bob Bruninga, WB4APR (et al):

The Appalachian Trail APRS HAM Event is the same day (7/18/2009) as Operation On Target (see www.ontargetbsa.org ) in most states (except for Arizona - they hold theirs on the 3rd Sat. in Sept.).  If there is a Line Of Sight (LOS) path between your HAM APRS stations perhaps they could also take some 1 square foot (sf), 2 sf, or 4 sf mirrors and see if they can create a chain of linked/voice confirmed flashes the entire length of the Appalachian Trail (I'm sure this has never been done before and we've been trying to get folks to participate in On Target back east)?  If there is no LOS path between some of the APRS participants this could be remedied by giving out 3"x5" mirrors (you can go to a local glass shop and ask them to cut up and donate some of their SCRAP mirror glass into 3"x5" mirrors to the Scouts for On Target)  to hikers along these no-LOS-path segments of the trail and they could get the flashes around the obstacle as long as a few critical mirror hikers were at key points.

You could communicate between the APRS HAMs and the hikers if the HAM's and hikers both have FRS(/GMRS) radios (or perhaps cellphones - probably doubtful cell coverage in the back country - and if they had cell coverage they would all need to call into a telephone conference bridge to be able to communicate to each other - there are some free telephone conference bridge out there on the Internet but you have to set them up in advance and let the cell phoners know the # and access code in advance).  I thought perhaps you could use some of the protocols that you (and others) have developed for Scouts using FRS radios.

This could add some other facets to the Appalachian Trail APRS HAM Event and you might be able to get some Boy Scouts to participate that would learn about FRS radios, Amateur Radio (including APRS), and how to make and aim a survival mirror.

There are details on making On Target survival mirrors at:

 http://www.ontargetbsa.org/resources.htm

Let me know what you think.

And I just found out it is the same date as the CQ WW VHF Contest July 16-20.
One beneficial coincidence, and one show-stopper... My thinking is that there
is no way we want to coincide with a VHF contest when these same easy-access
sites will ahve a DX pedition oerating also on 2 meters... and desensing each
other.

But doing it the same weekend as On Target is perfect!

We need input from the contesters...

Hello Bob,

I am a contester too. It will be hard to devote time to both. The VHF contests
are the ones I gear up for and yes I am on or very close to the AT.

I will be able to help most any weekend with enough lead time but I may not be
able to engage with hikers.

By the way Midlle of July put most Thru-Hikers in N.Va -> Nj, with lots in PA.

Seems like a great idea !!

The SERA covers the SE USA.....their purpose is to coordinate repeaters and do a
great job of it.

Maybe some of the packet "heads" in VA, NC, GA etc will hear about this and help
out your project....

The trail crosses White top Mtn, about 100 yards from one of my State Police
Comm sites. Ive seen several hikers over the years.

While not 100% confirmed, the probabliity of obtaining a 1-hour time slot for a
Scouting forum at the upcoming Dayton Hamvention is increasing. The moderator of
the forums, Todd Collins, N2TUN, is a strong advocate for Scouting and
introducing amateur radio to young people and he is doing everything he can to
work Scouting into the 2009 forum program. He has tentatively offered Friday
morning (May 15th), from 9:15 AM to 10:15 AM. I 'tentatively' agreed to that
slot.

If we get the slot, I definitely will need help and partnerships from other
Scouters to put together an agenda suited for the Hamvention.

My thoughts:

From my perspective, as a Troop Committee member, a merit badge counselor and
upcoming member of the 2010 K2BSA staff, I would like to learn from other
Scouters how the Radio Merit Badge can be effectively and properly taught in
troop or patrol venues and in formalized sessions such as 'Merit Badge
Universities.'

I would also like to learn how Amateur Radio has been integrated into Troop
programs - including camping and JOTA events.

And, I would hope that a Scouting forum at Dayton could be a perfect first 'meet
and greet' session for the staff members of the K2BSA operation at the 2010
Centennial Jamboree.

The bottom line: I'm looking for partners to help me put together a Radio
Scouting forum for Dayton 2009. Can you help?

It seems to me there is also a YOUTH forum that would be a good place to interact, but then it may be preaching to the choir.  Unless you try to turn them on to Scouting.  Steve

IMHO, it'd seem wise to have the Radio and Scouting forum directly after (or before) the youth forum, in the same hall. The two would go together very well, since they are almost the same audience.

I'm a youth ham, and a scout.

The listing of Forums at Dayton 2009 has been released in this week's ARRL
Letter and Radio Scouting was not included. This was a possibility due to the
late request for a forum slot and the popularity of forums this year.

We'll try again next year! YiS de John K9XT
