Subject: National Jamboree APRS communications

I would like to form a team of APRS folks to see if we cannot
fully support the National Scout Jamboree in 2010 at FT AP Hill
in Virginia.

We can do it.... We have the technology... We used APRS for our
Klondike Derby. Please see how effective it is on this page:
http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprsevent.html

Do we have anyone who is on the inside that can help us see if
this is worthwhile doing?

We fielded 13 APRS handhelds just for the local Klondike Derby
just in our half of the county. Surely we can find enough
assets for supporting the National Jamboree.

Too many people think that APRS is only about GPS tracking and
completely overlook the situational awareness, two-way comms,
and logistics advantages of exchanging digital info overlayed on
maps.

I'd combine FRS voice reporting with APRS objects and trackers
to get the maximum input, then displays at HQ, Infirmary, HAM
radio tent, etc...

Hi all,

Richard Middlekoop reports the 50th JOTA Report (2007) is now available online at http://home.tiscali.nl/worldscout/index.htm

The site also has an order form for an historic overview of Jamboree on the Air -- the first 50 years.

Richard has also found a copy of the first JOTA report (4th JOTA) and that is available on line, free of charge.  It's quite interesting to see how things have changed.

A recent (relative term) article in QST on the last National Jamboree listed several people that were involved there.
One participant was Larry Wolfgang, WR1B a staffer @ ARRL HQ.

BSA Venture Crew 510 (that's DX in Roman Numerals) will be hosting
the ham radio portion of Venture Quest at Moses. We are chartered through
Pioneer Valley Council. We'll be using the crew's club call,
NE1C (New England's #1 Crew) and be
on 2m, IRLP, and HF Scouting Frequencies -- I'm guessing 20m for the
most part.

From what I gather, we'll be in operation on Saturday May 10th from 1:PM
to 5:PM. We'll offer eyeball QSL cards / operator cards for those that visit
and actually speak on-the-air, and possibly customized QSL cards and/or
certificates for on-the-air contacts.

We have a permanent radio shack up on the reservation, with a TA33
beam up 55'. The Crew owns an IC746 which we'll use for HF. We can
reach IRLP node 7270 in South Hadley from the reservation.

Good day everyone.
The Muskegon Area Amateur Radio Council's Venturing Crew 9050 will be
setting up a amateur radio station at the Gerald R. Ford Council's
2008 Kick Back Weekend tomorrow. The station will be on the air from
9am-5pm EST. That is 1400Z-2200Z for the UTC time.

We will be operating on and/or near the Scout Calling Frequencies.
Mostly on 40 and 20 meters but we may switch to other bands to help
showcase amateur more. This is our crew's way of drawing others into
amateur radio.

We will be running barefoot into a G5RV strung about 40 feet up in the
air between a couple of trees, at Gerber Scout Camp Reservation in
Twin Lake Michigan. We will be using two call signs; N8PPQ and
AC8AL. N8PPQ is the call sign for Dan, our Associate Advisor of
Program and then my callsign is AC8AL. We hope to hear some scouters
on the air tomorrow!

Dear Scouters,

It is very important to fully specify time, zone and date when
announcing Scout/Ham events. There is often a day or more lag in
distribution from this group. Thus it is hard to figure out when "on
the air tomorrow at 0700 hours" is. Zulu, local, daylight time and
what day.

If you expect to be called give us "just the facts, man." Such
as "operating as W6BSA from 1000 to 1600 hours EDT on Saturday, Feb.
23."

Hi Dave,

Take a look in the "Files" section of ScoutRadio.

There's a file in the "SCCP" folder labeled "the 2007 scout camp calling protocol.rtf" dated Feb. 23, 2007.  That should be the latest SCCP.

The only thing to add might be the APRS CQSRVR for SCOUTS, see http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprsjota.html  For scout camps having APRS service, this might be a great way to scare up HF contacts.

Howdy Bill.
You are right, I should have put the date with the Zulu time. That
is very important.

You said that "we" are still on EDT in your message. I do not know
whom the "we" is and that is okay. Most of Michigan is on Eastern
Standard Time, EST, during the winter months. Dickinson, Gogebic,
Iron and Menominee counties in Michigan's upper peninsula are on
Central Standard Time. Michigan goes back to Daylight Saving Time
on March 9th.

I am Bill Ragsdale, District Chairman from Golden Empire Council in
California. I am speaking at the Dayton Hamvention for amateur radio
on the topic "Adventures with Elmer Baden-Powell, How Ham Radio Meets
Boy Scouting" at the Hara Center, Saturday, May 17 at 9 AM.

I am considering ordering an exhibit space so we can have a continuing
presence through the event. Do I have any volunteers who would like to
do booth duty during the Hamvention? Does anyone have a suitable
table-top display for Scouting and ham radio?

That's great Bill. I can give you two hours or so on Friday or
Saturday. Also, if you're running the forum, I can also explain how
hams can easily run a Radio Merit Badge Day using the materials
available on the web site I set up:

It's funny but all of my table top display materials are geared to
showing ham radio to Scouts, not the other way around. But there are
lot of photos of our Radio Merit Badge Day as well as those
of JOTA and K2BSA available on the web, so creating a few poster
boards is a possible if it's a go. Bob has stuff on using APRS at
camporees.

Also, I bet BSA National has generic booth materials we could use as a
starting point to add our radio pictures to.

Bill,
If my schedule works out so I can attend, I would be able to help out.

Bob:

I like what you've done at your Klondike Derby. That sort of
transmission of scoring information looks very promising for council
and district camporees, klondikes, etc. across the country.

But unless I'm wrong, Scouts at the National Jamboree mostly wander
to whatever activity interests them as buddy pairs and not as
patrols. There is no central scoring and rotation of patrols as at
local events, but individuals get their ticket punched for
participation for individual awards. Thus I see little need for
transmission of scoring information to a central location.

That said, there might be other uses for APRS at the National
Jamboree such as tracking location of the leaders and trailers at the
fun run, etc. Also, it might make sense to have an APRS station set
up at each sub-camp for transmission and printing of messages to
Scouts that arrive at K2BSA via NTS. The hard copy messages could
then be placed in the Scouts Jambo troop's mail bin. Likewise
outgoing messages to home via NTS could be originated at each sub-
camp.

Also tracking of ambulances, etc. might make sense.

I'm sure others with more recent National Jamboree experience may
have additional ideas.

I am still pondering how we can use APRS at the National
Jamboree in 2010 and one thing we could do is have a small
poster on this topic and enlist signups of ham radio operators
that are going to Jamboree so we can see if we can get enough
APRS equipment together for Jamboree.

My thinking is along these lines:
1) Try to solicit Ham Radio Clubs to BUY (and donate) an APRS
device to be used at Jamboree by Scouts from their area. I
think there are about 2 dozen separate subcamps. This tracking
device would be mounted on their subcamp vehicle.

2) Get APRS displays at major sites, such as HQ, COMMS, Ham
Radio tent, Infirmary, etc...

3) Get volunteer operators to maintiain tracks on objects
important to logistics and operations...

4) Take voice check-ins and notification of object locations by
voice on ham radio and FRS.

See: http://www.ew.usna.edu/~bruninga/aprsevent.html

Something like that.
