Hi Matt,

I don’t think the US Scouting Net has been “active” for sometime, principally due to propagation conditions and no checkins.  The Scout Camp Calling Protocol has somewhat replaced it.  You’ll find the SCCP in the files section of ScoutRadio.  In addition, check recent postings for Camp Operating Location Announcements (COLA) for specific operation from scout camps.

The various Nets worldwide have become the “chicken and the egg” syndrome – there’s a Net and noone checks in or there are folks listening but no net control.  I’m hopeful that as we climb the sunspot ladder and conditions improve that the Sunday afternoon net or a replacement will become active again.

Hi everyone,

We took our radio to Woodruff Scout Reservation in Georgia last week
and had a great time. Lots of contacts, and lots of interest from the
boys. But we had zero luck talking with any other camps or any other
scouts.

I thought when we got home that I would see if anyone else was on this
week, but again, no luck so far. So I wonder if hardly any camps
actually get on the air, or whether I have misinterpreted the SCCP.
Could someone please give me the real scoop?

I've been listening to the SCCP freqs and tuning around the bands from time to
time. Propagation has been spotty at best down to non-existent much of the time.
On occasion, a DX window opens into Europe or South America, but for me from
here in AZ, if there's a stateside opening, it's usually to the southern midwest
or to CA and seldom at the SCCP times.

Think Cycle 24.

Hi Fred,

Thanks for the thoughts. Actually, the past two weeks, it has been
very active on the bands. When we were at Woodruff, we worked
Africa, Germany, England, not to mention several US states. My son
worked Texas and Kansas on 10 meters three weeks ago. So the
propogation is there (at least it has been good over the last several
months).

Anyway, it seems to be a worthwile effort to keep monitoring per
SCCP, especially for the next couple of weeks, since there are so
many boys going to camp.

Brad,

I have been at a BSA camp every Thursday for the past five weeks. There are
two more weeks to go this camp season. Am QRV from 12:20 PM local till about
6:30 local. During the six hours, there are perhaps 30 minutes total with
the mike button pushed down. Most of my time is spent explaining ham radio,
telling how to get into the hobby, talking about Venturing Crew 73,
explaining the public service aspects of ham radio, listening to visitor's
stories, answering questions, etc.

It takes about 20 minutes to bring a Scout from zero understanding of ham
radio to making a contact, if all goes well. The odds are against us making
contact with other BSA camps, although we have on occasion. We are
especially happy to make contact with anybody who has ever had anything to
do with scouting. Sometimes we get lucky, like the time we spoke with an
adult who had some Philmont stories to recount. Earlier this year, we lucked
onto a 16 year old scout from NJ with a license who was trying for WAS. We
gave him Ohio. No big deal, but it sure made the boys happy. I put them all
on the air with the NJ Scout.

Camp antennas are not the best. Slopers and inverted V's are the general
rule, with just 100 watts. We don't have a 70 foot tower with a tribander
(yet!). Lots of what we do during the day is pure NVIS. Around suppertime,
when most scouts drift away, the good sigs from Europe start to come in.
That's when I kick back and take great pleasure working from a site with
very little power line QRM.

Am glad you had a good time with your camp radio experience. There are
plenty of interesting people in ham radio with stories to tell that will
engage the Scout groups.

Brad,

We operated from Woodruff during the week of June 24-30 (we were in
Campsite 10, just up from the dining hall). While we made just over 200
contacts on or about the SCCP frequencies, we made no scout camp
contacts. I counted about 15 contacts with scouts/scouters who were
operating from their home QTH, but no scout camp contacts. So our
experience was not so different from yours. Most of our contacts were
up and down the East Coast, and into the Midwest. A few contacts on 20
were into G and OZ land. The majority of contacts were on 40m, with a
good number on 20m as well. We also made 22 contacts on 80m. We were
running an FT-857D on an AGM battery, with a 100+' doublet strung
between two trees at about 40'.

We will try again next year!

John

Hi All,

We've finally got Internet connectivity (for how long? KYFC....) and a
little 230V so we're getting more active by the hour. Had a scare seeing
myself pictured in the tent I share with David, mni tnx OM!

We hope to update our website http://gb100j.radio-scouting.org.uk/ soon,
see you on the bands or on Echolink! Look for PA5UL on there, as
Echolink does not allow special callsigns.

The Huntsville Hamfest is August 18th and 19th.

As part of the Hamfest, there will be a FREE kit-building
session for youth on Friday, August 17th from 6:00 PM until around 10:00
PM near the Von Braun Center South Hall (exact room TBD). This kit
building has been organized by Huntsville amateur radio operator Tom
Duncan (KG4CUY), using a kit of his own design.

The kit is an FM wireless microphone. All materials and tools will
be provided. No prior experience is necessary. This is a great
introduction to electronics and kit building. If you bring a small FM
receiver, you can talk to yourself all the way home!

There are a limited number of kits available. Please RSVP to
steve@... and let me know how many to reserve for your
attendees.

Scouts are welcome at the hamfest. Kids under 12 and scouts in uniform
get in free. There are some great youth activities this year, you don't
have to have an amateur radio license to participate.

This year, the Huntsville hamfest is hosting the national convention of
the American Radio Relay League, and immediately follows the Global
Amateur Radio Emergency Communications conference. There will be a lot
to see and do!

The main hamfest site is here:

Special activities for youth:

Please send questions or your reservations for the kit-building activity
to steve@....

Steve, I am interested in what you are doing for a kit.

I am running a JOTA/I event in October and I am in the process of
dreaming up a kit. Having never done this before, I was trying to
dream up something very cool/interesting, cheap enough, low enough
part count… Do you mind if I rattle a few questions off?

1) Have you done this before?
2) How much does your kit cost?
3) How much are you charging for the kit or do you have a sponsor?
4) How long do you expect inexperienced youth to take to build it?

I was initially thinking of doing a name-tag kit where kids could
program their name into it and it will blink it in Morse. I figured a
pic-based kit would reduce counts and still be able to do something
fun.

Tnx,
Jon

This kit was designed by Tom (KG4CUY). It's all discrete parts, on a
single-sided board that he laid out. He made the boards we will be using
at the hamfest, and we expect to use them all.

Tom ran a similar kit-building session two years ago at the hamfest, and
said it went well. It was using a different kit, though. I expect that
it will take an hour or two for the kids to build the kit, if we have
about 10 going at a time. We plan to have about 4-6 soldering stations,
and enough hand tools for those. I think the plan is to do two stages of
'board stuffing', followed by soldering those components. That way we
can have an adult supervising the board stuffing and checking
components, and at least one supervising the soldering.

The circuit is a two-transistor audio amp which modulates a single
transistor oscillator running at (roughly) 100 MHz, and a doubler to get
output in the FM broadcast band. It operates at low enough power to
comply with the FCC part 15 rules.

I don't know the exact kit cost, Tom has absorbed that, but it's all
junk box parts. The transistors are all 2N2222, and I'm guessing that
the electret mic element, 9V battery lead, and 78L06 regulator are the
other expensive parts. The circuit uses two hand wound inductors (Tom
prebuilds these), and requires tuning with a dip meter or frequency
counter at the time it's built. The PC board is about 2"x2".

Tom and I feel like having discrete parts does more to open the
mysteries of circuit building, and to make kids aware that there are
"parts inside".

As soon as we get past the hamfest, we're going to start reconfiguring
and/or redesigning the kit. We're members of a very active local ham
club (http://www.harc.net/), and our plan is to put together something
cheap and easy to build, and then stock a bunch of them so anyone
interested in grabbing kits to take to a youth event can to that. Events
like JOTA would be perfect. I'll likely be participating in the JOTA
this fall myself. We have no sponsors yet, but I expect that once we
know the kit cost, we'll go looking for some or bring it up as a club
activity.

The goals so far in the 'redesign' are:

1. To get the board layout redone so that we can have boards
commercially made. I've committed to do this work. Preliminary estimates
have bare board cost at about $2.25 each, and I'm sure I can reduce this
even more.

2. To replace a component that's now hard to find cheaply (MV209 diode).

3. To see if we can make it possible to build the kit without the use of
test equipment other than a multi-meter and/or portable radio.

We're not committed to staying with the FM transmitter, if we can come
up with something better. We'll see how this one works out at the
hamfest - we're still learning. We already have kids signed up from age
8 to age 14.

If a kit like this has a larger audience, then by all means we're
interested in what people think.

I hope this answers your questions, I'll write a report for this mailing
list after the hamfest.

Jon,

You might consider the project we used for the electronics merit badge at the national jamboree.  It can now be ordered online.  (See also the eMeritBadges site.)  It is not a radio project but it is both electronic and scout related and it is similar to the type of project you mentioned you were interested in.

All;

You can find downloadable copies of the official 2007 JOTA Logos in
both color and monochrome in the files section. Feel free to use them
in your brochures and flyers.

It looks like it will make a very cool patch, have color copies on
hand to show folks and generate excitement in it!
