I've corrected a few errors and tightened the wording and formating on
a revised proposed 2007 SCCP which I've uploaded to the files area
here. I'd like others (especialy the original drafters who deserve the
credit for coming up with concept) to review it and see if it's correct.

If folks think it's more confusing, let me know that as well.

Thanks,

Gary, K2GW

If the Scouts are (one of) the future growth of Ham Radio and I think it is.  Many of the Radio Clubs in our area are dying (or have) because of the lack of new members and even when asked to support a few Scout activities (see my note to the radio club below) I got only two replies.  Maybe I shouldn’t complain as it was two more then I expected.  I can’t do it all – the clubs need to help too.  It they won’t, they will fade away.  I know I am “preaching to the choir”… Do the radio clubs need help too and is there a way for the Scouts to “infiltrate” the clubs to get more activity toward the Scouts?  (my problem it that Scout night and the local Radio Club are the same night…)

"... and to conduct programs and activities that advance the interest and welfare of Amateur Radio in the community."

I know of a few opportunities to advance Amateur Radio in the community and maybe find a few new hams.  The quote above is from the FSARC Purpose.  I can't execute the opportunities by myself, but with enough help I think they would be a good event(s) for the club.

Next year, May 2nd - 4th of May Delmarva Council BSA is holding a "Council Jamboree" at Killen's Pond.  This would be a great place to show off Ham Radio.  They are currently looking for staff to determine Who, What, Why, and How the event is planned.  The call K2BSA/3 can be had for the event...

Merit Badge Collage just finished for the local BSA Council.  Radio merit badge was NOT offered.  It could be offered.  License testing/classes could be offered to the adults, too.  Another great place for a demo station.

Hi all,
just a quick email to let everyone know that the Worcester Radio
Amateurs Association will be on the air on Saturday 24th using GB0WOR.

The event is the Worcester District Scouts Fun Day. We will be on the
air from 10am until around 4pm. We will be QRV on the following:
80m Phone
40m Phone
40m PSK
20m Phone
20m PSK/SSTV
VHF Echolink via G0WXJ-L & JOTA conf server

Most of the activity will be on 80m Phone, as one of the members will
be running a BI-square antenna hung from huge kites (wind permitting)

Hope to hear some of you on the air.

Cheers

"Infiltrate" is the right word. Bringing another local ham-Scouter into a club
can cause two such members to become a club's majority, spirit-wise. It only
takes one activist ham-Scouter in a radio club to cajole, extort, browbeat, and
shame the other club members into participation in Scout activities. Most often,
it doesn't take much convincing and doesn't take more than a little leadership
to persuade the other club members to sponsor a Scouting Special Event for such
occasions as BSA's Birthday, JOTA (of course), or in the instance of my home
council, a Special Event at a major council camporee to celebrate the 90th
Anniversary of Troop 1, Unadilla, NY, the oldest continuously chartered Troop in
the US, a long weekend which not only really raised local awareness of ham radio
among Scouts and Scouters, enlivened the club and rejuvenated its members, but
brought a lot of local hams back onto the radio, produced several new hams, and
caused the creation of a council ham radio group.

We actually infiltrated two other clubs in the larger area and now all three
actively participate not only in Scout activities but also in other youth
groups' events (e.g., 4H). The only problem with infiltration is that the
infiltrators need to stick with it because the infiltratees tend to fade without
leadership; infiltration will not continue on its own momentum.

Gary,

What would you think about adding a PSK-31 column in the tables and show the correct freq?

20m  14070.150 kHz

40m  7080.150 kHz

80m  3580.150 kHz

Then, we could eliminate the paragraph mentioning PSK-31.

That would be great!  It might stir more activity on PSK. The kids are not afraid of a computer…

T30 will be at “Gold Rush” this weekend.  I plan on running KB3NCC/3 – our troop ARS and operating PSK-31 and maybe RTTY during the NAQP contest.

Great idea, Fred! I've made those revisions to show PSK31
frequencies in the tables and replaced the version of the draft
document in the files section here on ScoutRadio.

This should help to be able to look it up on a table by time zone.
I know when I'm at camp I have enough problems remembering which
dining hall shift I eat at, much less converting frequencies and UTC
in my head!

That was Frank's idea. I'm still reviewing the freqs for possible conflict with
major nets meaning regularly scheduled emcom and service nets (e.g., ECARS)

One thought before somebody else brings it up. There's some operators who do
SSTV for JOTA and other Scouting events. I think the volume of Scouting SSTV
traffic is low enough that the present SSTV freqs (at least for 20m 14.232 give
or take) should be adequate for everyone. That could also apply for other modes
(digital, FM, AM, etc). If anyone thinks otherwise for the specialized modes,
this is the time to bring it up.

Today is the 150th year since the birth of Robert Baden-Powell and the birthday of his wife Olave Baden-Powell.

Enclosed is a picture of ceremonies this morning commencing with the Scout / Guide Spirit Flame

The ceremony began at Paxtu in Kenya, the location of BP's retirement home.  Pax was the name of the BP home in the UK (Pax Lodge).  Pax is Latin for "peace".  Paxtu is a wordplay on "Pax 2" and also means "complete" in Swahili.

The gravestone for the couple has the fleur-de-lis and the trefoil side by side.  At the bottom, partially hidden by flowers, is a circle with a dot - the traditional trail sign indicating "I've gone home."

During the centenary of the birth of the scout movement, a flame lit by a solar mirror this morning began it's trek across Africa with it's destination to Brownsea Island on the English coast, on July 31, 2007 - the site of the first scout campout.

This day is called Thinking Day in Girl Scouts USA tradition.  It is also called Founder's Day in many countries.  Girl Scouts locally celebrated by performing a service project.  Girl Scout units of Logan County this week constructed 175 bags of food packages to be distributed in honor of our area senior citizens.

During Scouting Sunrise - Guthrie, we will hold a candlelight ceremony during our campfire.  The Girl Scouts here this week made candles similar to how our Oklahoma pioneers would have made.  They will light these during our campfire ceremony.  Boy Scout units are welcome to make their own custom candles as well.  We plan to have a station set up during Scouting Sunrise to make more during the event.

Scouting Sunrise - Guthrie will also have ashes brought from the campfire at the 2007 World Scout Jamboree which will be occurring simultaneously.  Our local re-enactor for Robert Baden-Powell will be back in Oklahoma in time after attending the opening ceremonies there.

And ... continuing on the theme of Radio Scouting, see http://www.guides-on-the-air.co.uk/ for info on Guides on the Air (aka Thinking Day on the Air).

The Canadians, who are very active with Guides on the Air, have a web page link that starts at http://www.clara.comm.sfu.ca/gota.html

Even though it’s only a couple of days away, everyone who has the time ought to contact a Girl Scout Troop in their neighborhood and get the girls on the air.

BTW, the Canadians had coined the acronym GOTA long before the ARRL used it for Get On The Air associated with Field Day.

I blew up the photo only to find the date of death of Lady Olave Baden-Powell
was masked by some flowers. I had the privilege and honor to meet Lady
Baden-Powell in 1965 while serving on the resident staff at Schiff Scout
Reservation, Mendham, NJ (I was between colleges). She gave an inspirational
talk to the National Training School students; indeed, it was an inspiration
just to meet her, a living link to the Founder. I Googled her and learned she
died in 1977.

Thanks for the input.  I think we’ve been thinking ahead and using the revised frequencies only.  That’s why only the 3570 freq was used.

Gary, et al,

I recommended the 3690 frequency in order to avoid the potential problems around 3940.  What does everyone think about making 3940 the recommended US calling frequency instead of 3690?  3690 is Extra only.  It would be quieter, but, require an Extra license.  3940 has some folks on it frequently who may not be scouting friendly.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for the input.  I think we’ve been thinking ahead and using the revised frequencies only.  That’s why only the 3570 freq was used.

If others think we should add other frequencies, that’s OK, but, please speak up.

Being a bit younger, I had to opportunity to see her speak (I can't
really call it a personal meeting) at the 1964 BSA National Jamboree at
Valley Forge.

A very nice lady!

BTW, I LOVE the fact that Baden-Powell and Heinrich Hertz were born on
the same day. That cements the bond of Scouting and Ham Radio as much
as the old BSA First Class requirement to send and receve Morse Code at
3 words a minute. And Morse Code testing in the US ended on that day
this year.

It's almost inevitable that when I get an old-timer to talk to Scouts
during a weekday that many of them say that was how they first got into
ham radio.

Frank,

I agree and vote for 3690. Here's why:

1. Some of the conversations at the top end of 80 are abhorrent. It
is not the place to showcase Amateur Radio to non-hams.

2. It's pretty quiet down at 3690 .

3. Extra is not that hard to get nowadays. We Scouters tend to be
smart ;-)

4. We really won't be doing much on 80 meters anyway.

I'll make the change on the incorrect CW frequency but hold off
publishing it until we agree here on 80 meters.

Also, I think repeating the frequencies in the chart isn't a problem,
if it makes things easier for someone to look up.

As for SSTV, I'll bet that's pretty rare at summer camps and the same
goes for inappropriate material being sent there. I would suggest
that any Scouts wishing to do SSTV, first arrange a sked with a voice
contact on 14.290 to find each other first.

Any other thoughts?

Gary,

You and I are thinking alike ... man, that’s scary!!!

I agree with keeping the 3690.  Now that the code is gone, and there’s probably very little activity on 80m.  We used to do CW on 75 from summer camp, but, that always involved a sked ... so we selected the freq.

I like what you’ve done in creating the charts with the frequencies shown.  It definitely is easier to read.

I move to set a cutoff date of March 1st for comments and then we go with what we’ve got.

You deserve all the credit for coming up with the idea! Based on your
opinion on 80 Meters, I've revised the document further and put it in
the files section.

I also figured out how to add the DGOS to the camp time schedule, so
effectively all a camp needs to look at is the one table and th efirst
page. I also listed all of the PSK31 frequencies as USB as I believe
that's the recommended practice for that mode and move the "bells and
whistles" to the end.

Everyone, try an give a copy to a ham who's not a Scouter and ask them
if they can understand it. Fresh eyes are always the best proofreaders.

Last year I posted a SCCP chart in the files section. It was (is) a single
sheet (in PowerPoint, but could be turned into a pdf) that put all the
frequencies, times, and very basic rules of the SCCP in a condensed format
that could be posted in a shack as a quick reference guide.

Did anyone find it useful?

Would anyone like an updated one built?

If it's deemed useful, I'll do an updated one with the information from the
updated SCCP. Otherwise, I can take down the old one.

Any comments?

Hi Dave,

A one page chart for use by folks “familiar” with the SCCP would be useful.  The chart should include the attributes of frequency, time, mode and be a tool for the operator.  The full SCCP includes the guidelines and some discussion so those unfamiliar can understand the concept.

Thanks for your efforts.

This past Saturday I set up a Amateur radio display at the Tidewater
Council's University Of Scouting. We had a lot of interest and a lot
more when they the code was gone. It was a fun day I set up a QRP
station using a Yaesu FT817ND and a PAC-12 antenna on 20 meters stuck
in the ground. Running 2 and half watts and the antenna completly
encircled by a brick wall. I had two contacts one with a station in
Wisconsin and one in Mississippi. Lessons learned, have a list of
amateur radio classes in your area. I posted a picture of the display,
it is in the scout camp picture file.

I was wondering if everyone who has contributed a file to the Scout
Radio Group could go to the file area and help clean it up.

We have a nice set of folders created for things like Graphics, JOTA,
SCCP, Radio Merit Badge, etc. But there are a number of files stored
at the root level that need to be moved to the appropriate folder.

It's easy to move something with the cut an paste option but this can
only be done by the orignal file contributor or the group administrator.

Thanks. It will be much easier for folks to find things when they're
put into the proper folders.

Just check CT8CNE on QRZ.COM and follow the link.

If you contacted CT8CNE you already have 25 points.
My station is worth 2 points (as I'm a boy scout myself)
