'Course, I've always been an Icom, Kenwood guy
for whatever reason.

My first HT was an Icom T22. I have an Icom W32A
that's been goin' strong for years, but my current fav
is my trusty "peashooter", a Kenwood F6A.

Get 'em started on two meters.

Both Icom's IC-T2H and IC-V8 are perfect for Scouts. Both are under the $150 price point, and are made military rugged. Both will take AA's and the added perk for the IC-V8 is that it is Scout Green colored! :) I own both and feel very comfratble letting my Scouts take these and use them as they are made so durably.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the inputs. i am still not fully decided but i think i am
leaning to the T7H sport as it has only a AA pack and it has BNC antenna
connector. i have an SMA on my ICQ7 but i am very careful and have made a
short jumper to connect a BNC antenna. i think that an SMA to BNC adapter is
inviting trouble. im still looking and will do some checking at the local
ham store once i get some money.
i appreciate all of the resonses that i have gotten.
Thanks

I am a scout and I know what radios cam/will be put through. I have the FT-60 and I'll recommend it to anyone. Some of the features may require the manual but you can get on the air pretty fast once you get it. It's great for scanning while I'm on my way to a campout. I have never tried the W32A, but it looks cool, just expensive.

I have two Yaesu / Vertex VX-150's Easy to use and very rugged and
weather resistant. Have used it in the rain and have dropped them a
few times with only minor scuffs.

Paid $110 for each, then got then quick charger and AA battery pack.
Features are fairly easy to use.

Only drawbacks, Audio could be a little louder, has a
relatively "fragile" SMA connector, and isn't a broadband scanner.
For 2m and listening to VHF Hi and some local aircraft freq... works
well.

Date sent: Sat, 16 Sep 2006 13:48:45 -0400

Hi Everybody,

1. You are getting this email because you have expressed
interest in helping me staff the Jamboree on the Internet
and Jamboree on the Air event. THANKS!

This the first "On-Line Staff Training" memo.

Just so you know, we have a high quality, high power
staff lined up.
I'm very happy about that. If you have friends or know
of others who would like to help out, we'll definately
welcome them. Have them get in touch with me.

2. Key links to know about.

Internet Staffers:

http://www.joti.org/en/index.html
(JOTI Rules, Registration, Tech Support, Information,
Participation Meter, etc.)

http://www.mirc.com/get.html#mirc32
(Internet Relay Chat software you can download
at home for free and learn about IRC. This International
Scouting "chat" area will be the primary attraction.)

Ray will develop a handout for participants to take
home, and continue with the JOTI fun on their own.

Ham Radio Staffers:

http://www.arrl.org/FandES/ead/jota.html

3. Time and Space Dimensions for our event.

Pine Tree Council Service Center
131 Johnson Rd., Portland
43.38' N 70.19'W
Off the end of PWM's Runway 11
in case you are coming by private jet. <wink>

Saturday October 21, 2006
9:00am - 4:00pm
(Staff should come at 8:30 am)

The event is indoors. Rain or Shine.

This is a World Scouting Organization
event that ALWAYS happens the 3rd full
weekend in October.

If it is really slow at the end of the day, like 3:00pm
we will start to wrap up early. This is the first time
we are doing this, so we'll see how it goes.

4. Physical Layout

4.a) JOTI For the Internet component, we will
have a number (6-10) of computers set up
on tables in a rectangle formation in the
large conference room. JT's laptop
will be one of them, and will be hooked
up to a projector. In the center of the
rectangle will be a switch and maybe
a wireless router. Each PC will be
given a static IP address to work on
the PTC network. Which is connected
to the Internet via broadband connection.
Each PC will have MS Internet Explorer,
antivirus, and mIRC chat software on it.

I also plan to have my machine from home
on it with EchoLink (echolink.org) software
on it. This technology mixes VoIP (voice over
IP) and Ham Radio together to talk around
the world mixing the two technologies.

4.b) The Radio Components will be set
up on tables in the main foyer / lobby.
We'll have the big PAWA antenna tower outside
and shortwave (HF) transmitter set up inside
on a table in the lobby. Plus, Lee Trask-W1LWT
will have a 2nd Ham Radio table to show some
digital Ham Radio modes like APRS (GPS
Mapping and location transmitting). He
also plans on showing Amateur TV and
JPG Image Transmittion over the radio
(aka Slow Scan TV).

5. Promotional Activities.
JT and Ray are going to coordinate Press Releases
in the news papers, Radio and TV stations around
Pine Tree Council.

Ray has already spoken about the event at the
Scout, Cub, and OA, Roundtables for Casco Bay
and Abenaki Districts. He plans to speak at DownEast
district at Wiscasset Middle School
on the 2nd Wed of October, and hit the CB folks
again on the 1st Wed of Oct.

District Execs for each district will also be using
the power of their email distribution list to help
us promote.

6. Scout Shop is normally open from 9:00am to 2:00pm.
They are tentatively planning to stay open until 4:00pm.
National BSA has a nice patch which we'll have on sale
for $4.50 This year they COMBINED the JOTA and JOTI
events on to the same patch. I suggest Staff buy
theirs early. I think they'll sell out. (Sorry this is a
FREE event, so I don't have budget to buy you patches.)
However, I do plan on a very nice framed certificate,
as I have done in past years for my help on this.

7. Program Logistics
Individuals, Families, Dens, Patrols, and whole units
are invited to come at any time during the day.
Groups of 20 or more have been asked to email me to
set up a time. This way we might avoid having
two or more big groups to handle at the same time.

I predict that there will be some slow periods during
the day when each of us can learn about the other
technologies on display, and try them out for ourselves.

I also predict that there will be some very busy
periods during the course of the day, when we'll
all be busy working scouts through our program areas.

In the main conference room, where the computers
will be set up. The primary attraction will be "Chat".
During busy periods, keep people in the chat areas so
they and the onlookers get to see the thrill of chatting
with scouts around the country and around the world.

Some people will want to go out and browse
their favorite web sites etc. During slow
times this is OK. But when we have participants
waiting to get on, we'll want to keep the
computers productively oriented to the Scout.Net
Chat Rooms.

If you read and try at home, the directions in the
link above http://www.joti.org/en/index.html
you will be able to see what all this about.
I believe there will be a lot of scouts and
staffers like yourselves who will be in these
chat rooms for the weeks leading up to the
big weekend event.
Hollar if you have any trouble.

I will be setting up computers and configuring them
on Friday October 20. If any of you wish to come and
help with that, you'd be welcome!

You can expect folks will need tech
support to learn how to select which country's chat
room they want to enter and join. If you've never
done this, don't worry about it. You'll learn.
Try it at home if you wish.

The staff's job in the Internet area is
a) Keep the chat and activities appropriate
to our Scouting ideals. That means actively
monitor the various computers and participants.
Kids will be kids. We all know that.
b) Provide tech support as needed.
c) Be enthusiastic and enhance the experience
for all our visitors!!!

8. What Staff should bring:

I would highly recommend you bring your
lunch. There is a decent chance the
the middle of the day is when we get hit
with the most people. If we are all leaving
the event to take lunch, even in shifts, we might be
under staffed. So, please bring lunch,
drinks, with you.

Those of us who are Scouts or Scouters,
we should be in Class A uniforms for this.

If you can or want to bring your computers,
laptops, you may, so long as it is OK for
participants to be using it.
Just let me know ahead of time.

9. Staff Roster (so far):

Ray Sirois, Organizer
JT Dabbs, Pine Tree Council Scout Executive
*Kevin Wiacek, Lead JOTI Tech
Matt Allaire
Paul Conley
Paul Saucier
*Lee Trask W1LWT
*Sam Beedy (not confirmed yet)
*Jesse Logan Cottingham KB1GWT (not confirmed yet)

* These individuals are "returning staff" in that
they have staffed a JOTI/JOTA event
with me in the past.

These events are a lot of fun for the participants AND
the staff, but it takes work and preparation. Thanks
for taking the time to study and read this Training
Memo # 1.
Thanks in advance for your offers to work this
event with us!!!

Again, if your parents, friends or other would
like to come and help us out. Please let me know.

Any questions? Let me know!

Depends on your specific criteria but I'm very partial to radios that
are inexpensive and really appreciate the ones that are free. Some
Scouts could be used by the military to field prove MIL-SPEC standards
as they'll subject a radio to use and abuse that even a combat unit
couldn't replicate!

All humor aside, using donated radios (commercial if you can get them)
is one way to protect your investment. Even if donated, you'll invest
time and money making them operational. So the lower initial
investment is good. (That and once they've carried a "brick" like a
Bendix King or Motorola HT500 they appreciate the VX-150 or a VX-7 and
are a bit more careful.)

Actually, I do agree with the VX-150 for a single band radio. I have
a couple which have survived a number of hikes and backpacking trips
with my scouts / venturers. On VX-150 survived a fall into a pond from
about 20'. Removed the battery pack and let it dry for a couple of
weeks, works fine. For a dual band radio, I've been using the FT-60
with good results. Yes, the SMA's are a problem if you're frequently
removing the antennas, but if you find yourself doing that, I'd get a
SMA/BNC adaptor.

If you purchase new ham equipment, I suggest getting the AA battery
carriers for when your backpacking, it's hard to find a charging
recepticle.

Hi,

I am looking to start or see if there is interest in my Grizzly
district and possibly the council for a Venture Crew or Explorer Post
for Ham Radio.

I was thinking that it would be affiliated with our ARES/RACES group.

Has anyone done this and can offer advice?

I can't determine what kind of file this is. It's not one of the 145

it in a standard document interchange format such as PDF, or even as an

Many thanks es 73!

Michael,  Post 599 in Phoenix (Grand Canyon Council) has been chartered to the Arizona Repeater Association for over 30 years.  The Explorers have been trained by the local ARES and participate in about 4 public service events each year.  The locals have plenty of volunteers for public service events, so the Post has found a niche in APRS tracking, and provide technical support to events when APRS is critical (like the MS150 bike race, 150 miles 2 day event).  The ARA has commissioned the Post to build five new trackers for future events.  The ARA has established a very generous scholarship program for Post members and they match our fund raising efforts each year.

The Post has as standard annual events: 3 local hamfests, one statewide Hamfest, Scout-O-Rama, JOTA (usually at 1 or 2 camporees in AZ), MS150 race, other bike and triathlon races, Field Day (best score in AZ), weekly workshop meetings, monthly business meetings.

We operate a VHF and UHF repeater on the best site in Phoenix.  The Ham Community really supports the Post members and always welcome us to their activities and meetings as well.

Our only real challenge is recruiting members.  Seems to be harder each year.

Best wishes for your endeavor.

I found several possible new members for you in
Maricopa Az and of course Tucson. I know my son Jim
KE7IDC, Troop 157, would really like to join but your
meetings are too far away. Jim would like to build a
tracker to help out with the El Tour de Tucson. Any
possibility of sending him the plans? I think he has
all the pieces. His email is ke7idc@...

You could expand your membership to the whole state if
we got creative on the membership rules.

By the way I ran into Jeff Hanna. Last time I saw him
was at a post meeting in 83. He is still in touch
with Brian and a few of the others. Must be time for
a reunion...

Michael,

Briefly, you need a chartering organization, and several core adults on the
crew who can be depended upon. Explorer Posts are oriented towards a career,
Venturing Crews are geared towards hobbies or recreational interests. Visit
http://www.scouting.org/venturing/. Establish a dialog with your Scout
Executive or District Executive for guidance.

We have operated a Crew since early 2006. The toughest part is recruiting.
You cannot expect youth to beat your doors down. Good luck!

Hi All

I have not made up this year's certificate yet.
But here is the one from a couple years ago.

http://www.ray.sirois.com/certificate.ppt

I put them in a cheap Wal*Mart frame,
and if I have budget, I tape a real patch to
the front atop the image.

If I have a special person I really want
to recognize, I might buy a blank baseball

The Radio Scout patch is available from

Rudy,  I use Publisher to make our club newsletter and send it via email.  The trick is to use a PDF software program.  I downloaded  deskPDF and paid the $29 lifetime registration fee.  You make your document in Publisher and then "print" it to deskpdf, which then changes it to an Acrobat readable file.   Really pretty neat stuff.

You might want to show the ARRL video "Amateur Radio Today". It runs about
six minutes. You can purchase a DVD or VHS from ARRL or download a MPEG
from ARRL for free. I used it when I taught a radio merit badge class and
it served as a good introduction for the boys. They also have a video with
several segments on emergency preparedness and disaster response that
might be good for your presentation as well.

The usual subjects -- JOTA, Kids Day, Field Day, emcomm, foxhunting, radio
and emergency preparedness merit badges -- should be included.

Great ideas and thanks for the link to the WOSM store.

Do you know who “owns” the RadioScouting logo used by the WOSM?  Is it in the public domain?  I’ve sent several inquiries to the JOTA Organizer and he’s never replied.  The logo is used on the ScoutRadio at Yahoo intro page, but, from whom do you have to get permission to use the logo?

What is the Jamboree-On-The-Air?
The JOTA is an annual event in which about 500,000 Scouts and Guides
all over the world make contacts with each other by means of amateur
radio. Short-wave radio signals carry their voices to virtually any
corner of the world. It's the sheer excitement of having a live
conversation with a fellow Scout or Guide in some other place in the
world that attracts so many youngsters to this event. JOTA is a real
Jamboree during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are
shared. It's a unique opportunity for each individual Scout to get the
real feeling of belonging to a worldwide movement.

Besides the technical and the community service aspect of Amateur
Radio I really think "the exchange of Scouting experiences, sharing
of ideas" and "belonging to a worldwide movement" are important
aspects of Amateur Radiothat will enhance the "Scouting experience"

I have uploaded the my JOTA Certificate in Doc format and PDF. I
remade the certificate in word as publisher would export it and keep
the graphics.

I did not know when I uploaded it in Publisher format I was going to
cause so much trouble. I have publisher at work and I use it because
I can print to the Color Copier. Except for XP Home at home I do not
own any Microsoft products.

I mostly use Debian linux to run a program called XASTIR. I really
only use Open Source programs. I'll think twice next time.

I will be conducting a Radio Merit Badge class at Fort Monroe, VA and am
looking for help in the completion of requirment 7.a.2. "Carry on a
10-minute real or simulated ham radio contact using voice or Morse code; use
proper call signs, Q signals, and abbreviations."

I'm planning on conducting that portion of the class at approximately 1230
EDT/ 1630 UTC.

I plan on attempting contacts on 40M SSB (7.270) but if the nets are heavy,
will move to 20M SSB (14.290).

If you are available to assist in an on-air chat please let me know....
