Dear Friends,

Please be invited to point your antennas towards the Caribbean to be more specific towards the lovely island of Curacao – the Netherlands Antilles. To join us during the National Scout Jamboree and contact our Amateur Scout Radio Station, PJ2SA.

Curacao is located in the southern part of the Caribbean sea, at a latitude of 12’ North and Longitude 68’ West, just 44 miles (70 km) from Mainland South America.

We will be very glad to make contact with Scout units, Groups and individual Scouts from around the world.

APRS at the National Scout Jamboree.
Just got word that WA4YYM will have APRS at the
Jamboree (he's in subcamp 19). So bring your tracker
if you have one. Sure would be nice if there was
an APRS display at the main K2BSA site....

I see that the cub scouts have an acheivement program
that issues blet loops for meeting certain
requirements (astronomy, geology, heritaget etc). What
would it take to add a HAM radio belt loop with some
simple requirements. (take part in a QSO either real
or imaginary, create a QSL card, give examples of
different radio modes and activities).

Just brain storming

Or just a Radio loop, a much-scaled down version of Radio Merit Badge to allow
for the other types of radio covered by the merit badge, e.g. broadcasting.

Sounds like a great idea! However, given the amount of time it takes to
institute changes at the National level, some of us might not see it in our
lifetimes. Computers Merit Badge was last updated in 1993 when most computers
were DOS with 40 mb hard drives and two megs of RAM while Photography Merit
Badge was last updated in 1983, long before digital cameras.

The latest info in the Jamboree newsletter is that K2BSA will be on
the "Standard" scout frequencies. I would guess this means the same
freq. used for JOTA etc.
They also gave the local repeater info if you are in the area. I do not
have the newsletter up at the moment so I do not know the 2M freq.
They will be conducting Radio merit badge and No-Code Tech Classes and
tests at the Jamboree.

The format for addressing a piece of US mail to a scout is:

     Mailing Address at the Jamboree

Scouts Full Name

Jamboree Troop XXXX

Subcamp No. XX

2005 National Scout Jamboree

Bowling Green, VA 22428-troop#

And if this Jamboree is like the last four, the subcamp number is
usually the first two digits of the Jamboree Troop number.

For example, Jamboree Troop number 1234 is in subcamp 12; Jamboree
troop 411 is in subcamp 4 (the leading zero is assumed for a three
digit Jamboree troop number.)

Big caveat - It's the Scouts JAMBOREE troop number, not the troop
number of his regular troop at the church or school in his home
town. Thus be leery, if you see mail addresses to a two digit troop
number ;-)

If any of you have traffic handler and have a Scouter who can
forward a message to to your local Boy Scout Council's Leaders "e-
mail patrol" , here's another way to reach a different audience
about Amateur Radio.

Just change the e-mail address to that of a local active traffic
handler who'll enter the messages daily into NTS for the ten days of
the Jamboree. I also mentioned "New Jersey" in the text as I'm not
individually able to handle the volume of traffic to all 35,000
Scouts at the Jamboree!

FREE RADIOGRAM MESSAGES TO SCOUTS AT THE NATIONAL JAMBOREE

Ham Radio operators are known for their ability to get messages
through when everything else fails. To "be prepared" for disasters,
we practice sending messages year round.

To generate practice messages, friends and relatives in New Jersey
may compose short radiogram messages for free relay via Amateur
Radio to Scouts and Leaders attending the BSA National Jamboree. An
example follows:

-------

Scouts Full Name
Jamboree Troop XXXX
Subcamp No. XX
2005 National Scout Jamboree
Bowling Green, VA 22428-troop#

Hope you are having fun at the jamboree. Weather here is hot.
Missy had six puppies. See you when you get back

Love,
Mom and Dad

----------

Please limit the text of the message to about 25 words. Nonsensical
or inappropriate messages cannot be sent via radio. Also, it's
vital that the JAMBOREE Troop (not the regular home troop) number be
in the address or the message won't be delivered.

The messages may be e-mailed to k2gw@... . They'll then be
relayed via Amateur Radio to K2BSA at the jamboree where they'll be
forwarded via a nightly radio net to the subcamp post office.

While "we'll do our best", there's no guarantee that every message
will actually be delivered. As these are not priority messages, it
may take a day or two to get the Scout, so please don't send
messages after August 1st.

If you have any questions, please contact me at k2gw@....

I think...  the issue is that parents don't have an easy well know way of sending a radiogram TO the boys at the Jamboree. The boys have a method to send messages home, via K2BSA.

Soapbox:  maybe a problem with the traffic system, is the way into the system for mom and dad (any non ham) isn't clear (even some hams).  Finding a ham isn't always easy and finding one to take a message is harder - except during an emergency, but this isn't an emergency. (end)

Now if the delivering ham (message from the Jamboree) asks to send a reply, he may make points with mom and son.

Since there seems to be some interest in contacting
folks at the jamboree, here is what has been done in
previous jamborees. K2BSA operates a 2M traffic net
early in the evening for anybody at the jamboree who
is a ham to send messages out on NTS. This is usually
around 7pm local. Or you can stop by K2BSA and leave a
radiogram.

Messages coming into the jamboree destined for
scouters and scouts come in via the regular NTS system
which K2BSA connects with during the evening. The
minimal information needed on the delivery side is the
full name of the scouter or scout and the jamboree
troop number. These messages are then put out for
pickup on the regular net for the jamboree. If there
are no takers for the messages, the staff will deliver
the messages as they can. K2BSA also will receive
packet messages. At the moment I don't know what the
mode name is we will be running nor the frequency.

During the day K2BSA will operate on all bands. These
were published in a previous note for this group.
However the scouts do have a tendency to want to go up
and down a band so be prepared. The official callign
going out will be K2BSA/7 and will mainly operate in
the General Class bands. We will also be running
satellite, packet and 2M. There will be a repeater on
site for the Jamboree use by any ham operator. If you
are a ham we encourage you to bring your HTs. We do
operate an emergency net from time to time and are in
charge of backup EMCOMM.

QSL cards will be handled by staff. They will be sent
out after the jamboree is over. These cards have been
made up already and will be at the K2BSA tent for
pickup by any ham in attandance or visiting who
contacts K2BSA via 2M. Also stop by and pick up ham
sign information that you can put on your tent to show
you have radio capability during the jamboree. We
encourage you to visit us at K2BSA or at the Merit
Badge Midway Radio Merit Badge.

Hello fellow HAMs and Scouters!

I know many of you are ramped up for the National Jamboree right now and that's good but I wanted to let those in the western U.S. know about Operation On Target that occurs later this morning (Sat., 7/16).  Scouts & others will be signaling from mountain peak to mountain peak with mirrors and will be using 2m or cell phones to confirm flash contacts (see www.ontargetbsa.org for more details).

Every year we try to get others to participate by signaling peaks in their area (some are visible from metro areas or towns) where ever you may be down in the valley.  These are BONUS/surprise contacts that the teams didn't know that they were going to get and they create extra excitement.  If you have some time between 10 AM - 1 PM MDT today please look at the peak registry (see link below) and if there are teams in your area jump in.  The frequency info and links are listed below (sorry I'm not sure what repeaters they will be using in CA or AZ - the coordinators in those states didn't provide them to me).

Sorry for the late notice but most teams didn't register until Thursday or yesterday (we jumped from ~30 to 80 teams) and I didn't want to send out anything if we were below 50 teams.  Also Arizona holds their On Target on the 3rd Saturday in September (17th) and surrounding states will probably participate then as well so if you can't participate today put the September date on your calendar.  Arizona has their own website at http://ontarget.mesavarsity.org/ .  Arizona only has a few teams out today to see if we can chain up between AZ and UT &/or CA.

The weather looks better this year than it has for the past several years so we may be able to break some flashing records.

Gotta run!  I'm off to Bountiful Peak.

Thank you & 73 de N7TEK!

I just looked at the peak registry and 72+ teams are signed up - see the link below:

There are also some HAMs offering their services at  http://www.xmission.com/~uarc/ontarget/hamops.php  but I don't know how many of them are current.

As far as HAM communication frequencies I suggest you use one of the frequencies below to communicate from peak to peak:

SUGGESTED SIMPLEX FREQUENCIES FOR ON TARGET:

    145.750
    146.460
    146.520
    147.420

I also suggest that teams try calling the HAM you are trying to connect with on the Intermountain Intertie Repeater system (see the link below for a list of repeaters and frequencies in your area) if you cannot contact them on Simplex:

There will be no formal net control on this system this year because they're weren't enough HAM participating to justify it as of Wednesday.  I suggest you monitor the system as you can and forward information along (help out) as you can.  Please be polite and use proper procedures when using the repeater system since you can be heard in many states!  Also try to keep your usage as short as possible since other non-On Target HAMs will also be using the system.

We have permission to use the telephone bridge again this year (Salt Lake City # 801-736-2066 hear tone and dial 666 and your conferenced in - 20 lines).  Long distance charges may apply if you are calling from outside the SL Metro area but there is no charge to use the bridge itself.  Try to call in periodically and take turns logging information and passing flash traffic (I do not have anyone monitoring this full time unless someone wants to volunteer?).  I think the bridge is limited to 24 lines so if it gets crowded some will need to drop out.

The weather looks fairly good but HOT!  Be safe and watch out for Thunderstorms/lightning (the weather forecast is for scattered storms in the afternoon).

See YOU on Top!
John

Greetings to all:
The good news is that it looks like we may have the makings of a successful link up across the Grand Canyon this year for the first time ever. The bad news is that  we won't make the complete span across Arizona.  We weren't able to get anyone from the southern part of the state to participate. But if we can establish the AZ-UT link up, that will be a significant accomplishment and will provide the pattern for the future.

Attached is the contact information for all teams participating in this years effort in Arizona and the mountain locations where they are scheduled to be.

There may be some additions which I will send out if I get them in time before Saturday morning.  Please check your email before leaving for your mountains.  I will have any updates for our group with me on the mountain on Saturday, and can be contacted by one of the cell phones listed on the attached list.

Bob Kimbrell WJKU and Dave Owens K7VNH:  can you advise which frequencies we should be using? I neglected to get that info when we talked last night.  If you will get that back to me, I can include that in my update tomorrow.
I am excited that we have so many teams involved in Southern Utah this year.  We are also getting a lot of interest in the western part of Arizona.  We would like to invite all to participate with us again on September 17 for On Target -Arizona 2005.  Check out our Council sign-up and info at  http://ontarget.mesavarsity.org/ .  You folks in California might like to check it out as well.

If everyone would get with it, we could probably recruit a bunch of teams to help form some serious networks all over the great Southwest. There a lots of accessible mountains in the area and lots of wide open spaces and clear skies at that time of year.  As our On Target Guru, Doug Brewer, has always said: you have to "think link and have a span plan!"
Good luck to everone on Saturday.  Anyone with any influence with the rain and cloud gods should use it.

 See you on a mountain!

Dear Fellow Ham Scouters & Scouts:

There has been much discussion as to whether there might be a WINLINK
Airmail station in PACTOR mode to supplement NTS traffic at the
Jamboree. There's no official WINLINK operation scheduled this year,
and it's not known if there will be an informal one.

FYI for those wondering about operations and frequencies for K2BSA.
I
authored an article for the July issue of CQ on K2BSA, and invite you

My post was a suggestion that Ham radio operators in other states
send a similar e-mail to their own area's Boy Scout Leader mailing
lists so parents and relatives have an easy way to generate NTS
messages to the Scouts.

As was pointed out, most parents don't even know about Amateur
Radio. By providing them with an e-mail address of a traffic
handler and a sample type of message, the traffic handler can easily
convert them into NTS format and send them on their way.

I limited myself to the CNJ Council as I don't know if I could
really handle the entire country myself. If you want to send a
similar e-mail to the mailing lists of any or all of the other five
BSA councils in NJ, it would be great.

Hi Folks!

Once you get passed the “What is Amateur Radio?” and “How do you do it?” questions of Scouts, parents and leaders, you are left with the “cost issue” which in these days of $500 computers and $250 iPods ring a bit shallow with me.

So I decided to take a look at Amateur Radio from the perspective of a  Scouter, Parent, and with the help of my Scouts, the Scout, to see how “enlightened self-interest” could be used as a motivational tool for getting kids involved in Amateur Radio or at least plant the seeds of knowledge of the subject in them.

Scouts and their parents often look at Advancement as the key element of Scouting.  This hurts me to say it, but with human nature being what it is, it should not be ignored. Merit Badges are something to consider when developing a Troop interest in Amateur Radio.  You can get kids to do good stuff if they see something (i. e. a Merit Badge) in it for them.  There are about 20+ Merit Badges which have cross-over skills derived from, or used in Amateur Radio.  They range from the academic (and Eagle-required) badges of Citizenship in the Nation and World to Pioneering and Orienteering.   Space Exploration and Astronomy have cross-over skills and concepts and of course, the Electricity, Electronics and Radio Merit Badges are complementary to the Scouting programme.  The reality is that there are many more and provide skill enhancement and reinforcement of the material to the Scouts.

Second, you want to instill the skills and interest in serving others into your Scouts and perhaps into their families.  Amateur Radio has numerous opportunities for service though the National Traffic System as discussed here, Amateur Radio Emergency Service, Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service, the Military Affiliate Radio System, the Red Cross, Salvation Army and various relief organizations run by the Methodists, Baptists, Catholics and others.   There are additional opportunities for providing communications on a routine basis through walk-a-thons, bike tours and the like run by numerous charities.  Kids, licensed or not, love to get involved in these events.  Quickly they see that what they are doing is important and exciting and instills the value of service to others in our young people.

Our Troop’s planning conference last year was driven by the Scouts’ interest in developing a  “first responder” type of capability.  Two of our Scouts had recently completed their EMT training and several had expressed some interest in working or riding in charity bike tours.  We also had an unusual moment in the Troop’s age and academic profile where we had bright younger Scouts who could keep up (and sometimes exceed) the academic level of our older Scouts.

As a background point, our Troop is a year-round tent camping Troop with a significant amount of traditional high adventure skill development (hiking, camping, backpacking, Leave No Trace) going on for Scouts of all ages.  Coolers are not a standard piece of equipment for most trips and the kids really love it.  We also make up for the lighter weight on the camping equipment side, and bring cool programme items ranging from Surveying equipment to Amateur Radio equipment.

Our Troop embarqued on a multi-month Amateur Radio licensing course wherein the Scouts spent a little over an hour for about three months worth of meetings in the study of the materials and doing activities that reinforced and met the requirements for Electricity, Electronics and Radio Merit Badges.  We did this for about three out of five meetings and ended up with a bunch of  completed Blue Cards and three new hams!  This was successful because over half the instructors came from the Fair Lawn Radio Club and the Bergen Amateur Radio Association.  Their involvement made for a change in atmosphere because the boys had new faces in front of them, and not Mr. Beattie going “quack quack” all the time and once again.  There was an air of excitement and seriousness that made for the success.

More boys are in the process of completing their licensing preparations and there is continuing excitement for Amateur Radio because now we have Scouts using their Amateur Radio equipment for everything from Troop logistics, to socializing, to the exploration of newer technologies like Amateur Radio use of high-power WiFi.  As we head toward our planning conference, there is some discussion of having the Troop work a Bike Tour as a service project, and possibly doing JOTA  and Field Day on our own or with a radio club.

For a recent Round Table, I prepared a talk on this subject and have included the text at the end of this message.  It needs to be updated as many Scouts and Scouters have made additional suggestions which I have not yet had a chance to add.

Enjoy!

Why Amateur Radio For Your Troop Program?

Ask yourself if there was a program outline that could enhance:

·        First Class Skills

·        Service to Others

·        Troop Logistics

·        Troop Esprit de Corps, and

·        Merit Badges…NO... LOTS OF MERIT BADGES,

and provide different learning experiences using

·        Auditory

·        Visual

·        Written, and

·        Hands-on skills using

exciting activities for Troop and Patrol Meetings or Outings,

wouldn’t you want to do it?

Well, Amateur Radio has these features and you can do this in your Troop.

Specific benefits:

  • First Class Skills need to be sharp to assemble antennas and supports using your knots, be ready with an expansion of your “Ten Essentials” in case your help is needed on short notice, gain an appreciation for National and Local government and how they function.

  • Using radio equipment you can provide communications to others at Charity Bike Tours and Walk-a-thons, and in service to those in need such as the Red Cross.

  • Use radio equipment to improve the coordination of Troop and Patrol Activities

  • Use the radio licensing process as a goal for each Scout to further bind them to the group through on-the-air casual communications

  • The training course and subsequent use of the equipment also enhances elements of the following Merit Badges:  Citizenship in the Community, Citizenship in the Nation, Citizenship in the World, Climbing and Rappelling, Computers, Energy, First Aid, Electricity, Electronics, Emergency Preparedness, Orienteering, Pioneering, Plumbing, Radio, Space Exploration, Surveying, Weather, (alas the now retired Signaling MB, too!)

  • YES! THAT’S 17 + 1 ! ! ! !

Why Amateur Radio For Your Troop Program?

How do you get it done?

·        Contact a local Amateur Radio Club and ask for their help

·        Have someone who knows something about the subject…

o       OJT is OK…just stay 1 chapter ahead! J

·        Get video course materials – Gordon West is pretty good

·        Go to a class at a Community School, Amateur Radio Event or Gordon West School

How do you get on the air?

·        Depending on interests you might buy a VHF/UHF radio or an HF/VHF/UHF radio

·        Build your antennas – kids love to play with stuff they made

·        Build some of your training tools – Even if they aren’t interested in Morse Code, kids love to tinker & play games with practice oscillators that can be built for < $10.

Not that I know of. Someone might try it out but we
don't run computers for the scouts at the demo station
other than satelitte stuff and digital modes for hf.
The main computer is for staff only and is used by the

Thanks Brian, N9WIS, for a great article about K2BSA on the ARRL
Website at:

http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2005/07/21/2/?nc=1

I really like the sample Radiogram going from Westy to Pee Wee
Harris. After all those years, Pee Wee is still a Patrol Leader.
Those of you who read Boy's Life will understand ;-)

Amateur Radio Newsline also has a nice story by Mark Abramowicz,
NT3V on the K2BSA operation. You can hear it or download it from
here:

http://www.arnewsline.org/

If you're not going yourself, make sure that the parents and Scout
leaders in your area know how to contact you by phone or e-mail.
That way you can forward radiogram messages from them to their sons
via the National Traffic system and K2BSA. No experience is needed
as newcomers are always welcomed and coached on local nets. Many
areas have VHF traffic nets if you're a Technician class licensee.

4:30 and 5 p.m. Monday while the leaders were setting
up camp.

Shields said no youth Scouts were seriously injured. He did not say how many
sustained minor injuries.

"We're looking into it right now," Shields said. "We have an investigation
under way."

One other leader and a contract worker also were injured but remain in stable
condition at a local hospital, Shields said.

The killed and injured Scout leaders were from Anchorage, Alaska, said Bill
Haines, Scout Executive and chief executive officer of
the Western Alaska Council, which oversees about 10,600 Boy Scouts and is the
largest of three councils in Alaska.

Haines said the longtime Scouts were leaders with Troop 711, which together
with Troop 712 brought 80 Scouts, ages 13 to 15, and
eight leaders to the Jamboree.

All the kids with the Alaska group are fine, Haines said.

More than 40,000 Boy Scouts, leaders and volunteers from around the world are
attending the 2005 National Scout Jamboree, being
held
[at] the Army's Fort A.P. Hill.

The Jamboree opened Monday on the 76,000-acre Army training base about an hour
south of the nation's capital. It runs through Aug.
3, with President Bush scheduled to speak Wednesday evening.

Organizers said this year's event is the largest single-site Jamboree since
1964. Scouts ages 12 to 18 are to spend 10 days camping
in tents and doing activities that include archery, fishing and geocaching, a
GPS-based scavenger hunt. Scouts are attending from
all over the United States and 20 other countries.

"I want to reassure the parents of the young men attending the Jamboree that a
remarkable amount of effort and resources have been
brought to bear by the Boy Scouts and their hosts, the Department of Defense, in
the planning and safety considerations involved in
creating, in effect, a city of 43,000 inhabitants for a 10-day period," Gov.
Mark R. Warner said in a statement Monday night.

The Boy Scouts have held the event since 1937 with the next gathering set for
2010, the Scouts' 100th anniversary.
