I did JOTA events for several years & only ran them for about 4
hrs 'cause that was all the help I could get plus the boys interest
would start to wane after a couple of hours. I'd start at 10 am &
go till 2 pm (some years we'd go longer if there was strong interest
by the scouts.) Also, to keep the boys around longer, I'd run on
foot foxhunts along w/having an HF station, morse code training,
packet Plus we'd tie the event in with Jamboree on the Internet.
Usually the folks who offered to help were willing to stick around
later if the kids were showing more interest & everyone had fun with
the foxhunts. I don't know whether this helps w/your dilemma or not.

In Otschodela Council (Oneonta, NY), we've had very good success with
our JOTA by combining it with a District Fall Camporee which is
planned for the JOTA date every year. We put it on ourselves through
our Otschodela Council Amateur Radio Group (OCARG - see below URL),
but as a secondary event to the main camporee. We've found that by
having four or five stations (each station has differing
capabilities, e.g. one will originate NTS message traffic (via VHF)
for the Scouts if they want to send a "Hi Mom, I'm fine" or "Dad, I
need dry socks" messages home; another does APRS; a couple others do
HF; I do PSK31) positioned almost randomly around the camporee area
and available for the Scouts to wander into in small groups (we tried
scheduling by Troop; didn't work - too many at one time) on their own
time works best for us.

Importantly, we invite the operators (all former Scouts or presently
active Scouting Volunteers) to camp out with us, join the camporee
staff for meetings, and otherwise make them feel like they belong
rather than being just a visitor. As a result, we had thirteen
(possibly more; I couldn't keep track of them all) operators last
year to man the five stations which included two camper trailers
converted for emergency radio communications (will be three this
year), an old ambulance converted to emergency radio communications
use (Troop 73, Voorheesville, NY), and two tent set-ups (I'm the one
who is caving this year and switching to a camper trailer). With the
station operators staying for both nights of the camporee, we not
only had good coverage for all hours for the length of the camporee,
we all had fun, too (despite the lousy weather). We're presently
organizing for this year and hoping for better weather. This will be
our sixth year running JOTA and each year it gets a little bigger and
better.

Here is a news flash from the SAREX Amsat mailing listing.

Could this mean JOTA operation this year? Expedition 8 is launching on Oct
18 so with Ex 7 packing up they might not be able to talk and/or might not
want to talk.

Subject: [sarex] ARISS Phase 2

All,

Arthur Rowe posted the ISS Status report which included:

*****
"An unmanned Russian Progress vehicle successfully blasted off from the
Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan tonight to deliver almost three tons
of food, fuel, water, and supplies to the residents of the International
Space Station.

The Progress 12 craft lifted off right on time from its Central Asian
launch pad at 8:48 p.m. CDT (148 GMT Aug. 29) as the ISS sailed over the
south Atlantic Ocean east of South America at an altitude of 240 statute
miles.

Progress 12 is loaded with supplies...."
*****

The docking of the 12P Progress vehicle to the ISS, as described in:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/space/08/31/russia.docking.reut/index.html
means that the latest ARISS hardware is now on-board the ISS! In a joint
Russian, US, Japan effort, a new radio system for the Amateur Radio on the
International Space Station was developed, qualified, and flown on this
Progress vehicle. The first installment of the Phase 2 hardware---a
Kenwood radio, specially built ISS Ham radio power supplies and antenna
switches were delivered on this Progress flight. The Russian team, led by
Sergej Samburov, RV3DR, certified the hardware for flight and provided the
ride, the Japanese team provided (donated) the Kenwood radio to the ARISS
team and the US team, in conjunction with the Japan and Russian team,
developed the software to provide a powerful system with a very
user-friendly interface for crew. We expect that Mike Foale and Alexander
Kaleri will install and checkout this system on the next ISS Expedition.

In addition to the Kenwood radio system that we launched on this flight, we
have a second radio system, a Yaesu FT-100, that will be launched on the
14P Progress flight in January. Also on 14P, we expect to fly the
Spacecam-1 SSTV system. Developed cooperatively between the MAREX-NA and
ARISS teams, the system is being certified for flight at NASA GSFC at this
time. Once on-orbit, it will allow pictures to be sent up and down to ISS
between ground-based hams and the crew.

The Kenwood radio system will support 2 meter and 70 cm operations (uplink
and downlink) and L-band uplink with up to 25 watts of output power. FM
voice, APRS and packet capabilities are included.

Well, foo, then. Our Council was trying to move it from the 3rd weekend for 2004, seems
that there is a big festival in a nearby town that's always on the 3rd weekend of October,
and they wanted to avoid the festival.

SO, I doubt if there will be a council-wide JOTA for us in 2004. And at the rate things are
going here, there won't be much of a JOTA for our Council this year. (Our bi-annual Council
event is a Camporall.)

Calvin,

Working with a local club is the best idea.  However, if it doesn't work out or you want other opportunities, check the JOTA story in the August/September issue of the Circle Ten newspaper.  K2BSA will operate from Camp Wisdom, Dallas.  Den or Patrol size groups can be scheduled to visit and talk over the station.  Registration is through the Circle Ten Reservations Desk.  If you don't have the newspaper and need the particulars, let me know and I'll be happy to send the details.

Goto the JOTA website on www.arrl.org / http://www.arrl.org/FandES/ead/jota.html and look to see who is handling the JOTA in Dallas and where it is and time.  We'll have JOTA at Camp Perkins outside of Wichita Falls TX  near the Oklahoma /Texas border.

It's not too late!  You can still plan a JOTA activity for your Den, and maybe others in your pack.

My suggestions:
1) Order the patches from BSA HQ--They make a great souvenier and advertisement for the next year's JOTA.  Scouts love patches!
2) (Assuming you are a ham)  Invite your Den, and the others in your pack to come by at a set time on Saturday.  Even just setting up your station for a few qso's will be fun for the kids.
3)  When the boys arrive, give them a pencil and a one-page script to fill out.  The script can include things like their name, age, grade, favorite game, rank, what they did during the summer etc.  This will give the Scouts something to say and something to ask while on the air.
4)  Teach the kids the phonetic alphabet.  Have a chart or handout for them to practice spelling their name on the air.  The kids love it!
4)  Keep it short.  Plan for just 45 min to 1 hour per den.  You can expand your program next year, if you'd like.

Have fun, and look for us on the air!

After much thought and advice here is my compromise.

We will run JOTA from 10am till 4pm. This shortens the day from 10 hrs to a
manageable 6hrs.
Also I revised the Radio Merit Badge class to 1 class of 10 scouts instead
of 2 classes of 10.

I don't know if I told anyone about this one demonstration I am doing this
year. I found at this years Hamvention a FM beeper kit from TenTec to use
for foxhunting. It transmits in the commercial FM band as a part 88
transmitter within 88-108 mhz band. It has a range of 80 yards which is
great for our JOTA area. I will dig up some handheld radios and let the
scouts go.

We had a great deal of JOTA success as a result of hams who
registered their JOTA event. I would like to encourage you to do it
again. Creating this database makes it much easier for others to
find JOTA activities near them.

Please register your JOTA activity at
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/ead/youthskeds/ Click on "add a sked
listing." Click "JOTA" and enter your information.

As I get requests, I will point them to that page so please register
ASAP. (You can set the expiration for the day after JOTA (October
20.) Please consider inviting boy scouts and girl scouts. I know this
will help many more scouting groups participate in JOTA 2003.

Thanks for your help.

Absolutely!

We are planning a campout / JOTA event in the Sand Hills area (near
Laurinburg) you are welcome to join. We have about 15 local scouts
planning to participate, and can use the ham help. Our plans include
setting up a field-day type station including a 40' tower, HF SSB and
PSK31, and VHF FM. We may add more modes or activities based on
interest.

I am also working on an opportunity to complete the Radio Merit Badge
during the event.

Contact me at N7IME@... for more info. I look forward to
hearing from you!

Jerry --

If you would like to come south a ways, we are planning a camp / JOTA
field station in the sand hills near Laurinburg.

Also, I believe there is a station that may be active from the
Phillips Middle School in your area, but not sure if they got some of
the station work completed yet.

Please feel free to contact me if you are interested in more
information on either of these; I can be best reached at

Jameson --

I just realized I replied to your posting from last year! Well,
that's the danger of internet searches (I was searching for JOTA in
Carolina and found your message). In any case, if you haven't made
plans to participate this year and are interested, drop me a line.

I have started a Yahoo! group to help coordinate North Carolina JOTA
events. You can find us at:

Please drop by if you are interested in finding a nearby JOTA event
to join, or if you are interested in providing ham radio support to
one of our area events.

Currently, I have the most info on a JOTA event station in the
Laurinburg, NC area that I am helping to coordinate. I also have
some info on a couple other JOTA events, one in Wilmington and one at
Camp Bowers.

Hello!

Is anyone aware of EchoLink conference nodes or IRLP reflectors
designated for this year's JOTA event, both for US and international
scout contacts?

These Voice-Over-IP modes would allow Tech class participants to get
more involved with JOTA. The published frequencies preclude these
licensees, but the VoIP modes could present an exciting alternative.

As we introduce scouts to ham radio, these modes may have the allure
to motivate them to get their licenses. With a relatively
inexpensive hand held (or even just a computer with internet
connectivity!), it is possible to get on the air and talk around the
world... with an entry level ham license!

If the conference/reflector nodes work out well during JOTA, we might
pursue permanent scouting nodes.

Thanks to Frank for finding a better link for the 2005 National
Jamboree. http://www.scouting.org/jamboree/index.html

If you would like to submit an application to be on the K2BSA Staff
remember you must submitt the application to your local scout council.

Frank has suggested you might want to indicate "K2BSA and Amateur
Radio Staff" on the form.

Once BSA Headquarters (TX) receives the application they will send
you additional information on K2BSA operation.

Now that this announcement has officially come out I have some questions about being on K2BSA staff.

How long is the commitment? 2, 2.5 3 weeks at the Jambo site?
Is personal equipment required?
Is a certain license class needed? I understand that a General class license is highly recommended but I have yet to upgrade due to work and school commitments over the past 4 years. I am planning on upgrading after I graduate this fall.

Can someone answer these questions?

Also just a piece of info I passed along a couple of months ago the staff fee has been increased $100; this is a blanket increase of the Jambo fees. $100 down payment is also required to secure your spot at your assigned staff spot along with payments of moneys according to a set schedule.
