We really do need to get going on firm planning for APRS at jamboree 2010. The
most important part will be identifying those people that are APRS savvy and
will be there.

> * Will the APRS [digi]peaters outside of the
> Jamboree be able to handle low power hand held
> APRS from the Jamboree?
> Did anyone do this in 2005?

We will need to install one-or more on-site digis for handheld coverage. But
that is as simple as a few mobile D700s parked in a few places or some small
portable digis.

> * Thinking ahead... what would make a

> Jamboree? (send an email home?
> would they care it was via APRS?
> -- radiograms are sent out every day
> mostly via packet)

When we identify all the APRS hams that will be there, we must also find how
many of them can bring along a tracker device or 2-way APRS HT. There just may
be enough of them to provide some fun tracking of existing people as the move
around.

But sending Email FROM THE HT out in the field or in the subcamps to mee is the
killer-ap...

Maybe prepare a FLAG that is UNIQUE to APRS that indicates THAT FLAG or bearer
is being tracked over at K2BSA? Or an OVERSHIRT saying "See me on APRS.FI" See
ham radio!

I am trying to plan my radio usage for the 2010 BSA Jamboree next year (Christmas is coming).  I know a VHF and UHF FM repeater is part of the K2BSA operation.  I am  looking at APRS HT's as a way for my son and I to keep in touch and to keep in touch with my wife and older son not at the Jamboree.  [YES we are all licensed]  I have been using a mobile rig in the car with APRS, so I know what it will do.  I found an old - not up to date - web site of the 1997 Jamboree (see below), but the graphics are gone and I am sure it would be out of date.
http://aprs.org/jamb.html#MAP - was for the 1997 Jamboree.

*  Will the APRS repeaters outside of the Jamboree be able to handle low power hand held APRS from the Jamboree?  Did anyone do this in 2005?

*  I don't (currently) know of any APRS repeaters ON the Jamboree site that would operate with the hand held radios that may be in use.  The K2BSA tent (and site of the voice repeater) would not be the best location for an APRS repeater...  Does anyone (going to the Jamboree) have a nice secure location with air conditioning?

* Thinking ahead... what would make a nice APRS demo for the boys at the Jamboree?  (send an email home? would they care it was via APRS? -- radiograms are sent out every day mostly via packet)

Yes, and there is a petition to revise 97.113 already at FCC to resolve
the problem.
It has been submitted by WB6NOA and others to actually address the problems.
Personally, in the times we live in now, there should be no reason that
professional
emergency communicators who are also hams should not be able to drill,
train, and plan
for the use of amateur radio in times of emergency.

Methinks that someone in the FCC staff hath gone overboard when they
made the earlier
ruling, since the earlier ruling seems to contradict 97.1.

I got a chance to actually sit down and read 97.113 and in 97.113c it
says "A control operator may accept compensation as an incident of a
teaching position during periods of time when an amateur station is used
by that teacher as a part of classroom instruction at an educational
institution." -- thanks Bill for the direction. The "ruckus" is more
related to ECOM and 97.113a. The ability to teach "the art" is also
covered in 97.1 -- schools (scout camp) would have a difficult time
teaching without at some point in time getting on the air...

(on the ECOM side, one could argue the point that 97.1 also wants to
"... advancing skills in both the communications and technical phases of
the art." is difficult without having drills and often need to include
the paid responders too. [yes the local government can ask for an
exception - what about a local private hospital?] - no answer required,
just my mumbling.)

Look half way down the Camp-W page for a sounder that we give to children as we teach them their name in Morse code during our childrens program. If you need help with parts or plans let me know.

http://k1el.tripod.com/K12.html has a keyer kit for 17 bucks. you can also download for free an earlier version for free if you can program a pic.
He may be able to do a little better price for a scout org or for multi units.

The words "keyer" and "klondike" can mean different things to various scouters.
Are you referring to a Morse Code Oscillator? Need a little more definition.

Hi.

I totally agree with you.

Most kids don't like digi modes, or ragchewing because they can do that with internet. They like CW and Contests because they don't do that on internet. You can see an example with WWYC (World Wide Young Contesters).

We have a contest during the JOTA weekend (WAG) and i pretend to show them how it works.

Well... here is an angle you may not realize - kids like contests!!!!  I bring'em over to the shack all the time and they really get into it.   Our Field Day Merit Badge class moves them right over to the station to work clubs all over the place very quickly.  They walk away comparing all the states and provinces they have exchanged with.

As far as the IOWA contest is concerned, 3/4 of the activity is on CW so you want them to cancel their CW activity so kids can talk on SSB?  And it's not even all weekend, just a small segment of the weekend.

Have the scouts work any contest station they find.  OK, it's not talking to another Scout which they can do in all other ways such as their iPHONE.  Contesting on radio is not found anywhere else so don't disparage it, join it!  And whatever you do, don't disparage it in front of the scouts - it's a valid ham radio activity.

My comment about contesters comes from personal experience. We have a
number of contesters
in our club. The club also happens to be one of the sponsors of our
Venturing Crew. We have many
in this group who will help when asked. These folks are also the same
people who run our VE team, have in the past been
Section Emergency Coordinator and have run other activities. But,
unfortunately we have many more who find many excuses
not to help. These also happen to be the same people who moan about the
"old age" of ham radio. We want them
to help. But, getting them to help is almost impossible. It kinda gives
a bit of a bad taste in our mouths.

A group of Hams will be traveling to Scout Camp Kanza this weekend to operate
four stations, selected from HF, VHF, UHF, and Echolink, as a part of the Scouts
Webelos Woods. We will be seeing over 300 Webelos... Operating times are 17
Oct from 9:00 AM CDT (1200 UTC) to 6:00 PM (2300 UTC). To find out what
repeaters and HF frequencies we are using, go to
http://jota.whitebuffalodistrict.info . We will be updating this throughout the
day as we move around the bands. If you hear that the band is busy, try again
in 30 minutes.

We will be operating as KC0AHN.

If you are with another scout unit, look us up and try to contact us. We would
love to talk with you.

Take care

As a tangential point, don't forget, that we REACHOUT to kids
and scouts, but we are also reeling in any parents too. Do not
overlook including material that might appeal to the parents.
Ham radio is generally attractive to adults and probably most
new hams come from the adult crowd.

This does not in any way mean we should not reach out to the
kids as best we can, but also be prepared to invite in the
parents too.
