Unfortunately, no McHoe, or anything close appears in the book. Many
entries concerning the ship JOHN AND SARAH though.

The only Abernathy (Abernethy) noted is:

"ABERNETHY JANET
Daughter of William Abernethy
deceased, in Old Manse of Foveran. Petty thief. Banished
at Aberdeen. Transported on
BETSY, master James Ramsay.
Landed Port of James River
Upper District 29 April 1772"

Thus is the typical entry in the book. The James River is in
Virginia, and the "Upper District" could be no further inland than
the Fall Line at Richmond.

Geneological Publishing Co., Baltimore, 1983
ISBN 0-8063-1035-9, LCCN 83-81052

Sorry no more information. My guy isn't in it either.

inthe Battle of Dunbar and the Battle of Worcester, and that he came

years and then began a long history of farming in Brunswick County,

This message is for Mr. Dave Fisher.

Dear Mr. Dave Fisher,

On November 18, 2005 you posted a message stating that information
about many Scots war prisoners who were sent to North America on the ship John
and Sarah can be found in the book Directory of Scots Banished to the
American Plantations 1650-1775 by David Dobson.
I do not own this book. If you own it, could you please look up in
your copy and send me any information this book contains about Walter Jackson?
He fought at the battle of Worcester on September 3, 1651 for Charles
Stewart and was taken prisoner. Walter Jackson was sent on the ship John and
Sarah
to Boston, Massachusetts Bay Colony. He worked as an indentured servant for
Mr. Nicholas Lissen at his sawmill in Exeter, New Hampshire and for Mr.
Valentine Hill at his sawmill in Oyster River (now Durham), New Hampshire.
Walter
Jackson died in Oyster River around 1683.
My 84-year-old mother is descended from Walter Jackson and we are
trying to find out where in Scotland he was born.
Could you please xerox any information the book contains about Walter
Jackson and mail it to me? My address is:

                         Ms. Susan M. Grady
                         6330 Hillcrest Place
                         Alexandria, Virginia 22312

Thank you. I would be very glad to pay you for the cost of xeroxing
and mailing me this information if it is necessary.

Sincerely,

Susan M. Grady

Susan,

An entry for Walter Jackson reads:

"JACKSON WALTER
Royalist soldier captured at
Worcester. Thansported on the
JOHN AND SARAH, master John
Greene, from Gravesend to
Boston 13 May 1652"

Information from The New England Historical and Geneological Register.

Walter Jackson is listed in the transcript of the lettter from Robert
Rich and William Geene to Thomas Kenble instructing the latter to
dispose of the men and to buy goods for trade in the Barbadoes. Letter
recorded by the Suffolk County Registrar of Deeds on 13 May 1652. There
are no residences for any of the ~150 men.

Tthis letter and list of men was in the NEHGR Vol 1, page 377, Oct 1847
and has been reproduced in other web sites and books.

The entries in the Dobson book, "Directory of Scots Banished to the
American Plantations 1650-1775" are quite short, as the two examplars
quoted so far indicate. In his introduction, Dobson states that the
book can not be considered comprehensive, and in particular, the
Cromwellian deportation records have not survived. It is apparent that
the entries do not attempt to be full biographies, though in some
cases, origins and occupations are noted. But, every little bit could
be a help, and all entries note their source(s). Those sources could
be a useful start-point for further elaboration.

Bob,

My grandfather Alexander Gordon was a prisoner from the same war, and married
Lissan's daughter. Small world.

Hello,
I may have posed this question several years ago, but thought it's worth
another try in case there are new members with new information.
Does anyone have info about prisoners after the 1715 rebellion who were sent
to Marshalsea Prison and then sent to Virginia? Some were indentured and others
were not. I am particularly interested about those who shipped out on the
Elizabeth and Ann and landed in Yorktown in January of 1716. Also, does anyone
know where the Marshalsea Prison records are kept or if any have survived?
Thanks!

Leila,

First, a quick Google search indicated that Marshalsea Prison was in
London, Borough High Street, Southwark SE1.

In the previously noted directory of Scots banished to America, there
are many persons noted as captured at Preston in the Rebellion of
1715. For the most part, all the directory entries read as follows:

"NAME
Jacobite captured at Preston.
Transported to Virginia or Jamaica on the ELIZABETH
AND ANNE, master Edward Trafford, from Liverpool
29 June 1716. Landed in Virginia."

A few entries (same voyage) include "York" Virginia. Some entries
indicate that the person was indentured, while a couple have other
amplifying information.

The list of men on the ELIZABETH AND ANNE is as follows:
Abercromby, John; Abbot, Frederick; Anderson, Robert; Arnott, David;
Ayston, James; Beatty, Francis; Blackwood, James; Brown,  John;
Bruce, Alexander; Bruce, Robert; Burne, John; Cane, Hugh; Carr,
Alexander; Carus, Christopher; Chisholm, Adam; Clark, Duncan;

The above information was compiled from the Calendar of Treasury
Books, State Papers (Colonial), and Calendar of Virginia State Papers.

In regard to spelling, David Dobson (or perhaps the records) did not
distinguish between "MacXXX" and "McXXX"; they are all spelled as the
later.

Thanks so much, Dave, you deserve a medal. I am familiar with the Calendar
of Va. State Papers entry, and some related data noted there that discussed
the fact that some prisoners (who evidently were not included in that list)
who paid Trafford to let them off the ship in Cork! So much for a vacation
in the colonies. Do you have any suggestions for sources that might expand
on the records from Marshalsea? (I think its the prison Dickens wrote about
in Little Dorrit.) I've done a good bit of research on the 1715 in
Edinburgh, but haven't tackled British records (presumably at Kew.) Any
ideas?

G'day!

I have just joined the List and am a little unsure of whether I can
benefit or assist.

I am researching the name of GUIL/GUILE/GOLD as the name was recorded in
the Parish Registers at Douglas in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The name was
obviously seated in the town well before the extant records reveal and
the male members were predominantly miners at Rigside.

I have seen several references to the fact that these Douglas/Rigside
people staunchly supported the Covenanter movement. I suppose I am now
looking for guidance to extend my knowledge of the family through the
possibility that some may have been captured and sent to America,
thereby creating some gaps in families and sudden cessation of children
in others.

Can anyone assist me?

The Scottish soldiers that were deported to America were captured by the
Cromwell forces at the Battles of Dunbar and Worcester. the Worcester
captives were on the John and Sarah which departed Gravesend in Nov
1651 arrived in Boston before 14 May 1652. There is no one in the John
and Sara list with a name like one of yours.

I do not think there was a passenger list of the dunbar capives on the
Unity but most went to the Iron Works in Saugus, then Lynn, or
Braintree. There are references to those some of those men in the Iron
Works papers and the Vital Records of Essex County.

the Golds/Goulds in the Essex County VRs are after 1700. There was a
Zaccheus Gould probably of Lynn mentioned in the Essex County Probate in
1644 and later. There were several Zaccheus Gould's in the late 1600s.
Some are probably the same man as he moved from town to town but no
records connect them..

Hi,
I haven't done much with this group in a while, I've
been getting lots of junk mail through this list. But
I wonder if there were any Abernathy/Abernethys on the
John and Sara? I have some info on Robert Abernathy
coming from the Cathedral where many pows were held
after the Battles of Dunbar/Worcester, and being sent
over here to Charles City?-Ericka

G'day Bob,

Such a quick response!

Thanks for the resume, I suppose on the face of things, it is unlikely
that there were any of my people involved or that I would have any real
chance of tracing them.

But I will stay on the List for a while, just in case something
evolves.....and at least I am learning something!

Thanks,

Bill

You have probably learned by now that making money on the web is not easy…
certainly not as easy as many sales pitches would have you believe.
The fact remains, however, that money making opportunities still abound on the
Internet. There are green pastures all around us and I believe smart marketers
will use the skills they have learned in our very crowded marketplace to their
great advantage elsewhere as well.

Where do you look for them? Well, I’ve found that digging around the search
engines provides a wealth of information.

Here¡¯s an example from my own family of what using just one of these
simple techniques can help you discover:
.I found out that one of my ancestors was a skilled craftsman who owned
his own business ¨C now I knew where my carpentry skills came from.
.I found out another had been a great opera singer who specialized in
playing the villain¡¯s roles (I can¡¯t sing worth a lick -- I wonder
what happened to that gene).
.I found out another had been a drummer in an early American jazz band
(this blew my mind ¨C I had been a drummer in my own band in high
school!). I even found an old reel-to-reel recording of one his jam
sessions!
.I found priceless photos of my great-grandfather Giovanni from ¡°the
old country,¡± and finally figured out where the heck all the hair on
my head comes from (if you remember the sitcom Seinfeld, and Kremer¡¯s
crazy hairstyle, you¡¯ll have a pretty good mental picture of old
Giovanni).
And that¡¯s from using just one of the incredibly simple research
methods I uncovered!
