Hello scoping buddies:

I have something that I don't think that I've had before.  If I have, I surely don't remember it.

This guy is certified with the IICRC.  He's a mold remediator for a company.  Anyway, he says this:

A.  I'm certified with the double I CRC.

How should I do this since the place is IICRC?

Thanks,
Susie

Susie,

I've had that come up before, and what I do is ask the reporter if I can just use the IICRC instead of the word "double."  It makes it easier for reading purposes.

I would do it as IICRC.  To me, it's the same concept as triple A or AAA.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the group, but I wanted to warn everyone of a non-payer
because I think this reporter may make the rounds and do this to a lot
of scopists. And since I know this reporter is on an active hunt for a
scopist right this minute, I had to get the word out. He told me he
was considering getting rid of his current scopist, but from everything
that happened to me, I think there is no steady scopist, and that this
reporter leaves a trail of unpaid bills instead.

Just for background, I was a reporter for 20-plus years, so I know what
we should be able to expect as scopists. And I'm not that picky and I
try to be helpful because I feel part of our job is to take the stress
off the reporters and not bother them with stupid stuff. But my inner
voice was screaming about this reporter, and I was stupid enough to
ignore my intuition.

This reporter was a pretty bad writer, had a lot of misstrokes, and
also sent me a transcript that had so many untranslates for things that
are basic novice dictionary entries, that I spent a ton of time making
dictionary entries just to edit this thing. And with the credentials
that this reporter had, the dictionary should have been a lot better
than it was. It was a nightmare and my production was slowed way, way
down.

I finally threw up my hands and sent it back with a bill for what I had
done and an explanation as to why. I had sent a couple of e-mails in
between explaining the problems I was having and that my production was
cut in half because of the lack of dictionary entries and all the veyr
unusual punctionation I had to manually put in.

The other thing was I got no spellings from this reporter, even thought
the transcript was filled with doctors' names, clinics, hospitals, and
many other things I had to look up. Don't get me wrong -- that's part
of our job. But I spent an enormous amount of time on the Internet
researching these names because I'm conscientious. But I didn't get
even one spelling from the reporter, nor did the reporter bother to
global anything in so that at least some of the spellings were there.
That should have been my first clue, because most reporters a few
entries at least before they send the transcript to try to help out.

It's like this job was just thrown at me with no effort from the
reporter at all for minor things, like we're just supposed to clean up
the mess and not speak up about it.

But aside from that, I did a great job on the part I did, listening to
everything verbatim, adding the enormous amount of time-consuming
punctuation that was absent, doing all that research, and gave a very
good product for the portion I had done.

The e-mail I got back was because I didn't complete the job, he was not
going to pay me anything for the almost 100 pages I sent. That is
totally unacceptable for the product that he received. And it's
expecially unacceptable for the product that he initially gave me.

I'm quite sure I'm not the first scopist to send back a transcript, and
I'll bet that I'm not the first scopist that this reporter has refused
to pay. The e-mail was too smooth and practiced. I'd venture to say
this may be one of those reporters that uses us for what they can get
out of us and then refuses to pay the bill for some contrived reasons.

I'm just happy I didn't do the whole thing, and I'm even happier that I
didn't stick it out and do a bunch of pages for 15 days before I
billed, like we had originally agreed to. I have no doubt that I would
have received a very similar e-mail refusing to pay me.

I'm happy to share the name if you e-mail me privately, but the
initials are RC in the south.

Thanks for the info.  I’ll be on the lookout.  What CAT system is he on?  Also, where did you report?  I was a reporter for over 25 years, moved to Florida and decided to scope.  No money in these parts for reporting.  J

I will email you privately, but I've also returned a transcript because of the same reasons you mentioned.  So you are definitely not the first scopist to have done that.  They paid me, but they were very upset with me.  Life's too short to deal with people like that and I didn't get in to this business to be ripped off.  I don't enjoy not getting paid or treated like a dog.

He's on Eclipse. Forgot to put that in!!

I was a reporter in Florida for my entire career. We moved to
Alabama for my husband's job, and I was told that they wanted
something to "offer up to the attorneys." And I ain't sellin' that!

So as a desperate last resort, I started scoping. And as they say,
everything happens for a reason. My son has Asperger's, and as he's
gotten older, I need to be able to respond to his needs quickly
sometimes, which I couldn't do while reporting.

So we live in West Texas now and are very happy, and I thank my lucky
stars for this alternate career that court reporting gave me.

Calling Scopists, Proofreaders, and Voice Writer
Scopists/transcriptionists

A group of scopists, proofreaders, and transcriptionists have
decided to become pioneers in our field by offering the first
convention for scopists, proofreaders, and transcriptionists.

We believe that it will benefit our industry if we can meet others
in our field and learn more about our profession. So we're inviting
all scopists, proofreaders, and voice writer
scopists/transcriptionists to join us on a cruise.

Newbies, this is a great chance to pick the brains of veterans and
learn more about this industry you've chosen as your profession.

Veterans, this is a great chance to mentor newbies, build your
industry's profession, and network with others in your field.

In order to make this as feasible as possible, and since this is our
first attempt at such an undertaking, the seminars will be fairly
informal round-table discussions concerning subjects like
punctuation, job expectations, etc. There will be no specific CAT
program seminars for this convention; however, we do have a scopist
speaker that will discuss remote scoping. The seminars are offered
at no charge. The only cost for the trip will be the cost of travel
to and from the port of departure and the cruise itself, plus any
excursions or extras that you choose to do.

So please join us on Feb. 22, 2009, for four days to the Bahamas. We
have a limited number of cabins reserved for this convention, so
don't wait too long to join us!

The prices for the cruise are $376 for an inside cabin and $416 for
an outside cabin. The prices are based on two people to a cabin and
include all taxes and gratuities. The prices are guaranteed with a
nonrefundable $25 deposit by March 13, 2008.

Upgraded cabins are available at a higher charge and require $150
nonrefundable deposit per person by March 13, 2008. The basic suite
is $776 and the Penthouse suite is $876. These prices are also based
on two people to a cabin and include all taxes and gratuities.

By October 20, 2008, $150 per person is required toward the cost of
the cruise. The balance is due by December 20, 2008.

Trip insurance will run anywhere from $24 to $40, depending on your
age, for the basic cabins. Trip insurance will run anywhere from $36
to $64, depending on your age, for a suite. The age range is up to
75 years of age. Anyone 76 and older will have a higher trip
insurance cost.

Port transfers are available through the travel agency, as well as
flights, but you're allowed to find your own transportation to the
departure port of Port Canaveral as well. Passports are required for
this trip, and the trip must be booked under your proper first and
last name as it will appear on the passport.

After March 13, 2008, people can still sign up to go, but the prices
are no longer guaranteed to match the prices listed above.

If you're not bringing your spouse or a guest to share your cabin,
we will have an online site we have set up where you can converse
with others that need a roommate.

To ask questions about the cruise or to find a roommate, please join
PSCG-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.

To book your cruise, please contact any of the following people:

Karen Jones at "kjones1951 at yahoo dot com"
Angie Ryder at "aryder at knology dot net"
Rachel Kurtz at "rachel at rachkurtz dot com"
Peggy Linhorst at "lynnlin02 at yahoo dot com"

We'd love to have you join us on the first PSCG Convention ever!

Thank you!

I was contacted by a scopist who is seeking another X-scribe 2001 scopist to refer to one of her reporters since she is on an extended daily copy for yet another reporter.  If you are seeking additional work, please contact her at melrac@... (melrac at msn dot com.)  Her name is Lola.

Thanks.

Hi Alicia!

Sorry you won't be able to go. Maybe next time. We're hoping there
will be a next time :)

The scopist who will be speaking is Rachel Kurtz. Can't wait for
that. I've wondered about remote scoping for a long time.

Pat,

There's a very interesting article in the February issue of the JCR.  It's entitled "Remote and Fast Scoping Is Possible."  I really enjoyed it.

Her name is Lola. (sorry I couldn't resist)--I'm bored

Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl
With yellow feathers in her hair and a dress cut down to there
She would meringue and do the cha-cha
And while she tried to be a star, Tony always tended bar
Across a crowded floor, they worked from 8 till 4
They were young and they had each other
Who could ask for more?

Okay, what's the next verse........??

I was contacted by a scopist who is seeking another X-scribe 2001 scopist to refer to one of her reporters since she is on an extended daily copy for yet another reporter.  If you are seeking additional work, please contact her at melrac@... (melrac at msn dot com.)  Her name is Lola.

Thanks.

And there's always The Kinks song Lola...

I met her in a club down in old SoHo
Where you drink champagne and it tastes just like Coca-cola,
C-o-l-a, cola
She walked up to me and she asked me to dance
I asked her her name and in a dark brown voice she said Lola
L-o-l-a, Lola, lo-lo-lo-lo, Lola...

I couldn't resist either....

Hello scoping buddies:

I'm doing this job and am so undecided on this, so I thought that I'd ask.

There's this company mentioned throughout called High Standard Service.  However, this witness always calls it High Standards.  He refers a lot to "the High Standards report," or "the High Standards protocol."

But I'm not putting an apostrophe after Standards here because it doesn't seem like a possessive the way he uses it.  Am I correct in doing it this way?

Thanks,
Susie

Susie,

It looks to me like the witness is just calling it High Standards instead of High Standard.  What I would do is leave it as is and leave a note for the reporter in that spot to ask if the reporter wants a (sic) there the first time it occurs or left as is.

Well, Susie, the way I see it is this.  If he did happen to use the correct name and said something like, "I read all of High Standard Service's reports," wouldn't you use the apostrophe there for possessive?  He's using it as the name, so I would make it possessive in the same places I would make the correct title possessive.

Hi, Everybody :-)

Happy Sunday to you!!!!

I'm in a quandary over this particular word, Bates'd.

The attorney says, "I wonder why this hasn't been Bates'd.

The only rule I can find in LMEG is Rule 130 that even remotely comes close to how I would write Bates'd.

Is Bates'd right?

Any help would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Pattie Walker
