As said, I'm keen to discuss any arguments here.
Here are some of the perceived benefits mentioned by principals:
- the school's image in the community
- classroom discipline
- peer pressure
- school spirit
- concentration on schoolwork
- student safety

Parents often articulate perceived benefits around concepts like
equity, ease and cost.
Should we try and be exhaustive in listing all possible arguments?
Should we also list arguments against school uniforms, or should we
merely deconstruct the perceived benefits? In any case, we should
try and keep "arguments" in the subject line when listing further
arguments; when going into one specific argument, let's ensure that
something like "agruments - cost" is in the subject line.
We could also list pages that discuss arguments. Many arguments have
been discussed in detail in articles like:
http://www.optionality.net/mag/oct98a.html
One more recent point to take into consideration is the huge and
increasing cost associated with administrating the uniform policy at
school, dealing with appeals and courtcases, and settling disputes.
There must be a huge amount of time spent by principals, school
administrators and members of commissions that deal with such
disputes. That cost is typically buried in general expenses of
schools and departments. It would be good to focus on this, and from
what I've heard, Dr Brunsma is doing some research into this very
matter.
One site that lists some litigation around school uniforms is:
http://www.gate.net/~rwms/UniformLinksLitigation.html
It would be interesting to add some more recent cases and calculate
the true cost of uniforms. The ACLU alone has been involved in quite
a few cases, they could be helpful with this issue.
Take care,
MCS
