"We must constantly remember our aim is God. And we must not be concerned with anything that makes us forget Him." - Kirpal Singh

"Surat Shabd Yoga is the Path of the Merciful Lord. I will hold fast to it, I will never give it up."  -- Swami Ji Maharaj, Sant Mat Master

"I wish I could show you when you are lonely or in darkness the astonishing Light of your own being."  -- Hafez

"Those who meditate on the Eternal, like the great ones have done, will discover the Eternal Teacher, residing in their own hearts."  -- Guru Kabir

"One should engender love for the Supreme Being and take shelter (saran) in His divine will (mauj). Hazur Maharaj said that 'a heart devoid of love or affection is as hard as a stone and does not form a suitable receptacle for the Light of Heavenly Grace and Compassion. .... The Supreme Being loves and takes special care of those who love Him with all their heart and soul and gradually draws them towards Himself -- the Center of Pure Light and Attraction.'" (Agam Prasad Mathur, Petals of Love)

"Jeeva-atmaa (the Individual Self or Soul) is the indivisible part of the Supreme Being (i.e. the Universal Soul). In the bondage state it is called the Jeeva. It is also called soul, an indivisible part of the Supreme Sovereign God. Only the individual soul (Jeeva-atmaa) is capable of recognizing itself. When the Self will be realized, only then it will be merged into the Supreme Sovereign God. Then it can be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Besides knowing itself, no other method has been articulated in the holy books and scriptures."  (Swami Sant Bhagirath Baba)

"Practice the Yoga of Inner Light and 'Nada-anu-sandhana' (Yoga of Sound, Surat Shabd Yoga). This will remove the layers of Darkness, Light and Sound (that conceal your Soul from the Supreme Sovereign Soul, i.e. God). You will, thus, get to know 'Who You Are'. And, when you know yourself, you will also know God." (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj)

"You can experience the sound of silence in the mind. You hear it as a kind of high frequency sound, a ringing sound."  -- Ajahn Sumedho

Relentlessly Rise Further and Further into the Subtle Sounds of Heaven

"A human being's ATTENTION is the most precious treasure he possesses. .... It is essential for the seeker to understand the importance of his attention in all his spiritual struggles, both in the search for the answer to the enigma of his existence and in his process of transformation."

"When meditating with this Nada [Inner Mystic Sound], it is essential that the aspirant always seek and follow the particular aspect of it that is most subtle and 'ultra' in pitch as well as in brilliance. Even when the Sound becomes very shrill and loud in moments of deep concentration, he [or she] must not be tempted to be satisfied with it merely because it is sharp and resonant. He should relentlessly attempt to rise further and further into ever more subtle spheres of its mysterious Invisible Kingdom." (Edward Salim Michael, "The Law of Attention - Nada Yoga and the Way of Inner Vigilance", Published by Inner Traditions books of Vermont)

"The Sound of the Gross Realm is sweet and harmonious. The Sound of the Subtle Realm is even sweeter and more harmonious than the Gross Realm. As one progresses from the Causal toward the Supra-Causal Realm, the experience is of ever increasing sweetness and harmony of the Sound. In the state of Oneness, the plurality of sounds ceases to exist, and only then can the Essential Divine Sound be experienced. Other sounds of the various Realms are not experienced at this level of the State of Oneness. ... The State Beyond Sound [Anadi, Anami Purush, Radhasoami, The Lord of the Soul, God] is acknowledged in the teachings of the Saints as the Goal of the practice. (Maharshi Mehi, The Philosophy of Liberation - Moksha Darshan)

"One grasps the central sounds of the lower realms and progressively is drawn upward to the sounds of the higher realms. Ultimately, one reaches the center of the Original Sound, the Essential Divine Sound, and thereafter attains the Ultimate State, Sabdatit Pad (State beyond Sound). The Yoga of Sound must be practiced in order to attain the Nameless State (Anami, Anadi)." (Maharshi Mehi, The Philosophy of Liberation)

"Receive initiation from the Guru in the true secrets of Shabd. Practice the modes of Surat Shabd Yoga with love and affection. Listen to the reverberations of Anhad Shabd within you. Regularly practice Surat Shabd Yoga. Contemplate the Guru's form. Behold beautiful scenes and spectacles within. When Radhaswami Dayal [the Merciful Lord of the Soul] is pleased to shower His grace, He will elevate your soul along the Current of Shabd. You will then ascend to your True Home." (Huzur Maharaj, Prem Bani)

You Are A Drop of Soul

"God was a wondrous ocean of Light called love. In this Great Ocean of God there were millions and millions of drops of light that were all fast asleep. And because they were asleep they had no idea how magnificient and shining God was. Each and Every drop was a tiny part of the great ocean of God. Each little drop of Light was called a soul. One of those little drops is you!

"After awhile God willed the creation. He sent forth a wondrous luminous wave of sound and light from his own being and made the entire creation from it. The creation was majestic and beautiful but there were no living things in it to enjoy it. The sound is what makes the body alive and able to jump and run and swim and fly: when the soul's part in the play is finished, the sound leaves the body costume, then the body dies, and no longer lives, breathes or moves. But the soul never dies! Your soul is a radiant drop of God, so the real you lives for ever.

"When the Lord wants one of his souls to come back Home. He makes that person feel lonely deep inside, like something is missing. This is the Great Lord's special way of reminding the soul that its Real Home is not in this world but back in the ocean of Light. God has placed an invisible secret door in every human being. God sends his own Great Power, Mercy and Love down into our world to find the marked soul drops and bring them back Home. This Great Power is called a True Living Master and lives inside a human body that looks like yours and mine. He makes a faithful promise to take the soul back Home. He shows that person how to close his eyes, sit very still and lovingly remember the Great Lord. His mind becomes so peaceful and quiet that he is able to hear the wondrous wave of sound and seek the shining light of the stream that flows all the way back to Ocean of the Lord.

"One day the secret opens, revealing the hidden path within: Thrilled, the soul steps across the threshold, into the starry sky of an amazing new world. The Master's dazzling Form made of nothing but the stream of sound and light! Off in the distance ...... the welcoming lights of Home! Over flowing with love and longing for God, the soul rushes on, until it arrives on the very door step of God." (Journey of the Soul, by Victoria Jones, from a webpage)

Dadu is one of my all-time favorite classic Sants of India. He was a great poet-mystic and spiritual Master of Divine Light, Sound, and Nirguna Bhakti from Rajasthan in the lineage of Guru Kabir. Anyone who studies his teachings will encounter a very genuine, no-nonsense, pure version of Sant Mat with the perfect balance of God and guru bhakti, love and mysticism (Surat Shabd Yoga, meditation). "The One alone dwells within my heart, day and night I repeat His Name. The Name of God alone is true; keep that within thy heart. Forsake all hypocrisies and cumbrous practices; this is the teaching of all Saints, 0 Dadu."  Mystic Poetry from India: Dadu Dayal -- Click To Listen:

Dream Theater - I Walk Beside You:

Lyrics: There's a story in your eyes
I can see the hurt behind your smile
For every sign I recognize
Another one escapes me

Let me know what plagues your mind
Let me be the one to know you best
Be the one to hold you up
When you feel like you're sinking

Tell me once again
What's beneath the pain you're feeling
Don't abandon me
Or think you can't be saved

I walk beside you
Wherever you are
Whatever it takes
No matter how far

Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

Summon up your ghosts for me
Rest your tired thoughts upon my hand
Step inside the sacred place
When all your dreams seem broken

Resonate inside this temple
Let me be the one who understands
Be the one to carry you
When you can walk no further

Tell me once again
What's below the surface bleeding
If you've lost your way
I will take you in

I walk beside you
Wherever you are
Whatever it takes
No matter how far

Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

Oh when everything is wrong
Oh when hopelessness surrounds you
Oh the sun will rise again
The tide you swim against will carry you back home
So don't give up
Don't give in

I walk beside you
Wherever you are
Whatever it takes
No matter how far

Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

"Saints have a very positive and optimistic view of us. Though they may note our predicament, our current situation, what they really see is what we can become."

(S.R. Bakshi and Sangh Mittra, in the book, "Radhasoami", Volume 19 in the Encyclopaedia of Saints of India Series, with volumes dedicated to various Sants and Sufis of the East: Rumi, Hafiz, Kabir, Namdev, Dadu, Mirabai, Guru Nanak, Tukarama, etc....)

The Sant Mat Quote of the Day: Listen to the Sound Current Every Day

"Knowledge of the Sar Shabd (True, Eternal Word, Essence of Reality) has such power that it can quickly destroy the karmas of the present life.... Contemplating the Sat Shabd, even for half of a moment, confers much more spiritual merit than living in the holy city of Kashi for millions of years". (The Brahm Nirupan of Guru Kabir and Sant Dharam Das)

"Listen to the Shabd Dhun—which is calling in your heart—every day with love and devotion, for five, ten or fifteen minutes, or an hour or two, according to the time at your disposal. But you must listen to it every day for a while. ....Fix the 'surat' and 'nirat' lovingly in the Sound. Then listen to the Shabd Dhun and give all your love and devotion to It—though it be for a minute or two, or five or ten minutes. Even if you listen for a short while, or even if you just listen—even then the report of this will reach Sach Khand, that you are sitting in 'prarthana' (humble supplication)......Why do you worry? This Shabd Dhun which is at all times ringing within you will never leave you. Hold fast to It. One day it will surely take you to Sach Khand. Believe this firmly. Please attend to your Bhajan and Simran every day and cheerfully accept the Will of the Satguru because internally the Shabd Dhun is always with you." (Baba Jaimal Singh)

Guru Nanak Arrived at a Quarrelsome Village - Stories to Transform Your Life

The Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

Once, during the course of his travels, Guru Nanak arrived at a village where the people were a quarrelsome lot. He blessed them and asked them to prosper and live in that village forever. In the next village, where the people were peace-loving, Guru Nanak blessed them too but asked them to abandon the village and disperse. Mardana, his close disciple, puzzled by the guru’s strange blessings, asked him why he blessed the first village with prosperity though its people were unworthy of it, and asked the good people of the second village to disperse. Guru Nanak smiled and answered: "The quarrelsome will only spread unrest and friction wherever they go. So I asked them to remain where they were. But it is better for the peace-loving to disperse and take their good qualities with them so that all those who know them can learn the art of peaceful coexistence."

There Are Five Kinds of Sight or Vision (Dristi)
By Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj,
from the new book, The Holy River

The Sant Mat Quote of the Day:
Sant Mat Radhasoami at Facebook:
Sant Mat Mysticism Blog:

The Art of Seeing

In the Katha Upanishad it is said that the Divine has created these senses to go outward and away from our true identity. Some patient and persevering practitioner desires the nectar of the inner world and brings the outward senses to the inward journey. If after hearing about the possibilities of the inner journey how do we behold and experience this. Seeing in this way is called Dristi -- that is, the art of seeing.

There are five kinds of Dristi [sight or vision]:

1. The sight of the waking state. That is seeing things in the everyday world.

2. The sight of dream state in which we see the dreams.

3. Manasi Dristi which is seeing with the minds eye. This is the realm of the imagination and seeing while imagining.

4. Divya Dristi is divine sight. Through which the vision of the celestial worlds is seen.

5. Atman Dristi is the state of seeing the Absolute Self.

In considering these five types of seeing, everyone in this mundane world experiences the first three. The last two are only developed through meditation.

Kabir Says: "Go thou to the company of the good, where the Beloved One has His dwelling place: Take all thy thoughts and love and instruction from thence. Let that assembly be burnt to ashes where His Name is not spoken! Tell me, how couldst thou hold a wedding-feast, if the Bridegroom himself were not there? Waver no more, think only of the Beloved." My Beloved Radhasoami, Supreme-Soul-Lord, The Lord of the Soul
By Swami Ji Maharaj,
From Sar Bachan Radhaswami Poetry,
Volume One,
Agra, India

The Sant Mat Quote of the Week:

My Beloved Radhasoami

Indescribable, Infinite, Unfathomable and Anami [Nameless, The Eighth]
is my Beloved RADHASOAMI [Radha-Swami, The Lord of the Soul, Most High, God, Ultimate Reality].

He is of wondrous form, eternally immersed within Himself in rapturous bliss.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

In Agam Lok [The Inaccessible Universe or Realm, Seventh Plane]
He assumed the form of Agam Purush.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Then He became Alakh Purush in Alakh Lok [Being and Realm Beyond Perception, Sixth Plane].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

In Sat Lok my Beloved Radhasoami assumed the name and form of Sat Naam Sat Purush [True Name, True Timeless Being, Fifth Plane].

In Bhanwar-gupha [Swirling Vortex, Revolving Cave, Forth Plane], the Antar-Jami (all-knowing) presiding deity is none other than
my Beloved Radhasoami.

He halted at Maha-Sunn [Great Void, Barrier of Darkness between the Third and Forth Regions].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

In Sunn [Void, Daswan Dwar, Third Plane, Par Brahm], He became the Imperishable Deity.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

In Gagan Mandal [Trikuti, Three Worlds, Causal Plane, Second Plane, Brahmanda),
He is OMkar Purush, who is without desires.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Still lower down, He assumed the dark bluish form of Niranjan [Lord of First Inner Plane or Level, Astral, Sahas-dal-kanwal, Thousand Petaled Lotus, Anda].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Descending to the heart center, He became subject to desires.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

He, however, reduces the evil propensities associated with the Plane of Senses [Pinda].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Assuming the physical form and body,
He awakens the humanity [Sant Sat Guru, One Who Is Awake].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

He has assumed the form of three Gunas (1) in this world.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

But Alal-paksh-like (2), He flies up.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

He repairs to His original abode (Anami Pad).
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Then He becomes Anami Purush, as He originally was.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

How can I describe His eminence?
So great is my Beloved Radhasoami.

______
NOTES:

Between [brackets] I've inserted some definitions or provided some translations into English of complex mystical terms used by Soami Ji Maharaj. See the book, Glossary of Radhasoami Faith, published in Agra.

Also see, PDF File of the Inner Planes of Creation:

(1.) The preservative, the generative and the destructive qualities, called Suto-guna, Rajo-guna and Tamo-guna.

(2.) Alal-paksh is a fabulous bird. It lays eggs in the sky, but the young bird-ling that comes out in the course of descent, flies up without touching the ground.

Masks of Spirituality - The Sant Mat Quote of the Day

"Those who are false from within but who outwardly show honor: They are only show-offs in the world." (Guru Nanak, from Asa Di Vaar) "Guru Nanak says, 'Such people may be able to impress the people of the world, but they cannot deceive God Almighty Who is sitting within them....Even if we are able to deceive other people, we can never deceive God Almighty, because He is sitting within us'". (from commentary on Asa Di Vaar by Ajaib Singh, "In the Palace of Love")

Main Obstacles in the Practice of Meditation, By Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj

The Sant Mat Quote of the Day

The main hindrances to success in the practice of meditation are the following: procrastination and laziness, activity of thoughts during meditation (day dreaming, fanciful imagination, planning, the rising of any kinds of thoughts).

In addition, the lulling silence during meditation puts many practitioners to sleep. During meditation we should be vigilant and awake. Whatever is our point of focus, we should diligently keep our mind on that goal and we will not be bothered by sleep.

Unless we overcome the magnanimous challenge of procrastination and curb the ever-rising tide of mental activity during meditation, we cannot reach our Noble (arya) destination (state of unity with God). The un-vigilant practitioners usually become engrossed in thoughts or fall sleep. These formidable passes must be crossed for success.

What is the place to be reached? When we close our eyes and see darkness, this is the realm of ignorance. When the light dawns within you, then you understand that you reside in noble regions. In darkness resides ignorance and in light resides Knowledge. For example, as we are sitting in light right now we are able to see one another. However, if the electric power goes out ensuing total darkness we will not be able to see others. We will not even be aware of other people, coming and going. In this analogy light signifies knowledge and darkness signifies ignorance. In the same manner when we see darkness with our eyes closed, we are in the realm of death and re-birth [we are unaware of our true nature]. When we come out of the realm of darkness and enter into the realm of light, we will at the same time transcend the web of death. It is not possible that we can remain in darkness and be free from the net of birth and death. Having achieved inner light we can be liberated from the cycle of birth and death.

Saint Kabir says: "In each house (heart) the light shines, but we are blind [ignorant of that divine Light of knowledge] so we cannot see it. If we keep looking, we will find the Light and will destroy the shackles of death."

Various forms of Dhyâna [Meditation Practices]

Without formless or subtle meditation, attainment of inner light is impossible. You must get yourself out of darkness. How will this happen? Prat-ya-hara—bringing the mind back—is followed by dha-rana, sustaining of focus for small periods. At first this will be for even a small time. Pratyanhara is the repeated practice of bringing the wandering mind to a focus. By repetitive practice of pratyahara we are able to focus for a little while on the object of meditation. This focusing for small periods is known as dharana.

When this Dharana continues for extended periods, then the state of dhyâna or complete focus occurs. However, mere focus on a physical form or name is not the only type of dhyâna. [Emptiness of mind is also dhyâna.]

As it is said in the Jnana Sankalni Tantra: "Dhyâna (focus on the physical forms) is not known as dhyâna; the empty mind is known (focus in empty mind) as dhyâna. By the grace of this [focus] meditation, one attains Moksha."

Some one asked Saint Mira Bai: "What kind of practice did you do to control your mind—our mind wanders far away during meditation?" Mira replied: "Through my consciousness I traveled the skies and then my mind came under control and agreed to be still."

Let us ponder on this subject. What vehicle did Mira Bai use to travel the skies? Was it an airplane, helicopter or a rocket? Mira Bai’s journey was not in the outer world but it was inside the inner realms. Her vehicles Divine Light (bindu), and Divine Sound.

Simplicity: The Less Organization, the Better, By Huzur Baba Sawan Singh

"'Satsang' has more than one meaning: First, it means the meeting of the Master and a disciple. Second, it means the meeting of all Satsangis who may attend, whether the Guru is present in body or not. There is no formality about it, none at all. It is a simple meeting of all disciples who can attend. We avoid formality and anything that may have the appearance of a rigid organization. The less organization, the better. And there must be no idea of leadership. The only leader in Sant Mat is the Guru. Just the Master and His disciples meeting together is the only organization we have."

I am a free being in this world - Kabir

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

I am intoxicated with love,
I have lost all need for cleverness.
I am a free being in this world,
I have lost all need for eliciting favors,
For the sake of friendship with the worldly.
Those who are separated from the Beloved,
Wander aimlessly from door to door.
My dearly Beloved is within me,
So why should I go searching for him?
The worldly struggle desperately for name and fame,
And endure intolerable sufferings.
I am replete with the Beloved's wisdom.
What need do I have for name and fame?
My Beloved never departs, not even for a moment,
I am never separated from him.
If such is the bliss of love I enjoy,
What need have I for restless longing?
Kabir has united with the Beloved,
And abandoned all duality from the heart.
The Path I walk is a delicate one,
Why should I add heavy bundles to my head?

Happy Kabir Jayanti: Always, Always Meditate Day and Night - Kabir

June 26th, 2010 Kabir Jayanti (Kabir's 612th Birthday) is being Celebrated: Sant Kabir Jayanti is observed on the Purnima or full moon day in the month of Jyeshta (May/June) as per traditional calendar. It is believed that Sant Kabir Das was born on this day. The birth anniversary of Sant Kabir is observed in India and around the world. Meetings, satsangs, and recital of Sant Kabir's poems are held on this day.

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

Meditation leads to salvation's door:
Go to heaven --
why go back to the world?
In the house of the fearless One,
where music, unstruck, sounds,
you shall play trumpets.

Meditate upon Him in your heart.
Without meditation there is no salvation.

Unfettered meditation
brings salvation:
Your heavy load is taken off.
Welcome Him in your heart,
so you will not be born
again and again.

Blissful meditation
will light a lamp inside you
that does not need any oil.
This lamp will make you immortal;
this lamp will draw out the poison
of lust and anger.

Pierce this meditation
that gives you salvation,
and wear it around your neck.
Never take it off.
Meditate always:
Your guru's grace will get you across.

Meditation will free you
from dependence on others:
You will sleep on silken sheets at home.
Your heart will be at peace;
your life will blossom:
Deeply drink this meditation.

This meditation
will erase your blemishes;
you will be free from Maya's touch.
Meditate, meditate, and sing,
"Hari, Hari" [God, God]. You will obtain
this meditation from your true guru [Satguru].

Always, always meditate day and night:
When you rise, when you lie down,
when you breathe in, when you breathe out.
Waking or sleeping,
relish the taste of meditation --
meditation will bring union.

Meditation will remove all your burdens;
meditation upon Ram's name [God's name]
will become your support.
Kabir, says, "He is limitless."

A Snake Attends Satsang

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

A Snake's Obeisance, from: "The Beloved Master, Some Glimpses from the Life of Sant Kirpal Singh Ji Maharaj", By Bhadra Sena, Published by Ruhani Satsang, Delhi, 1963

Once the Master was delivering a discourse in the Ashram, when a snake appeared in the huge gathering and sat near the dais with its hood all spread out, facing the Master. The panic-stricken devotees were alarmed and agitated. The Master said, "What is there if a snake has come. Leave him to himself." And he resumed his talk. The devotees kept quiet and sat down as ordered. The snake kept sitting there for about an hour and continued looking at the Master. When the talk was over, the snake quietly slithered away, without harming anyone.

Success With Inner Light Meditation Requires Tenacity of Purpose and Focused Concentration, By Swami Achyutanand Baba, Maharshi Santsevi Dhyana Yoga Ashram, Kolkata, India

Sant Mat Quote of the Week/Quote of the Day:

Swami Achyutanand Baba

The practice of drishti yoga [meditation upon the Inner Light] calls for utmost devoutness and tenacity of purpose. The practitioner who assiduously and patiently practices this meditation will discover that the fickleness or unsteadiness of their concentration gradually ceases and their mind becomes tranquil. It is thus that they shall, with the piercing thrust of their focused gaze, be able to break open the 'tila dwara' (the Third Eye).

This is why Gurudev (Maharshi Mehi Paramhans) said, "Drishi yoga abhyasa atihi karatahi karata, kampani sahajahi chhutai praudha hovai surat. Tila darvaza tutai nazar ke jora se. Are han re 'Mehi' lage takataki khuba, jora barajora se."

Translation: "Through regular, rigorous practice of 'drishti yoga' (Meditation on the Divine Light within), one's attention no longer remains wavering or unsteady, as the surat [the attention-faculty of the soul] slowly matures (becomes absolutely fixed, stilled)." Tila dwara (the Tenth Door or the Third Eye) will break open by the thrust of the focused gaze…So continue gazing inside constantly with all of your attention, says Maharshi Mehi Paramhans ji Maharaj."

The practitioner of drishti yoga [meditation] has to stop seeing outside, and begin to look within. As one's vision gets steadied, the grand expanse of light comes into view. This has been exquisitely portrayed by Sant Gulal Sahab: "Ulati dekho ghata mein joti pasara. Bina baje tahan dhuni saba hovai. Vigasi kamala kachanar, paithi patala sura sasi bandhau, sadhau trikutI dwara. Ganga jamuna ke wara para bicha. Bharatu hai amiya karara, Ingala pingala sukhamana sodho. Bahat sikhara mukha dwara. Surati nirati le baitha gagan para, sahaja uthai jhanakara."

Translation: "Revert within [invert] and behold the stunning spectacles of light within the body. Numerous melodies play there without the aid of any instruments. Flower-like lotuses and Kachanar (Bauhinia Variegata) blossom there. Dive deep within, rein in the Sun (the Pingla nerve or the Yamuna) and the Moon (the Ida nerve or the Ganga), and train your attention at the doors of Trikuti. In the centre of the Ganga (Ida) and the Yamuna (Pingla) lies the repertoire of elixir. Merge the currents of Ida and Pingla in the Sushumna, and lo! The stream of elixir is down-pouring from atop. When the surat (Soul) rises above and gets lost in the inner sky, spontaneously resonating currents of sound are heard."

As a matter of fact, the art of drishti yoga or vindu-dhyana is confidential and has to be taught by an adept Guru [Living One, Living Master, Sant Satguru], without whom this would be but an extremely arduous task.

(Based on an English translation provided by Pravesh K. Singh)

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

Guru Amar Das

The Lord placed the soul in the body's cave,
And the breath held the Music of Life.
He made each body with nine gates, (1)
With the Tenth Gate (2); remaining well hid.
And the Tenth Door was opened to him
Who truly loved the Guru's wisdom.
And there lives the Lord in His myriad forms,
as well as the nine treasures of the Name.
His limit cannot be found.

Says Nanak, the Lord placed the soul in the
body's cave and the breath held the Music of Life.

Listen to this Song of Bliss, you blessed ones,
And all your heart's longings shall be fulfilled.
You will reach the Transcendent Lord, and
your sorrows will depart.
All afflictions and sorrows are destroyed
at the Sound of the True Word,
And my friends, the saints were in ecstasy when
the perfect Guru revealed it.
Those who speak and those who listen are pure,
And they see the All-pervading Lord everywhere.
Nanak prays: Attaching to the feet of the Guru,
The mind is filled with the divine Music of the Spheres.

-- Guru Amar Das, from Anand Sahib, Peace Lagoon translation
_____
Notes:

(1) "nine gates": The nine visible orifices of the body.

(2) "The Tenth Gate": The Tenth, or Hidden, Gate of the body: The Third Eye, in essence, is the Portal to inner realms. The Upanishads describe a human being as a city with ten gates. Nine gates (eyes, nostrils, ears, mouth, urethra, anus) lead to the outside world. The Tenth Gate, the Third Eye, opens onto inner worlds: the whole spectrum of levels of consciousness.

In Search of A Genuine Master and Genuine Disciple

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

In Search of A Genuine Path and the Secrets of the Supreme Being, By Huzur Maharaj

"Suratia [the soul], after exercising much discernment, has adopted Guru Mat [Path or Teachings of the Guru]. She had been searching for the Original Abode, but could get no inkling of it anywhere. Some advocate idol-worship, others sing praise of pilgrimages. Some remain stuck in rites, rituals and other observances. The sophists pose, but remain stuck in mana (mind) and maya (illusion). Being disappointed with all these people, Suratia [the soul] made search and enquiry concerning Sant Mat. By sheer good fortune, she happened to meet a satsangi [initiate] who gave her the necessary information. He explained to her the greatness of Sat Mat [the Path of Eternal Truth]. He gave out the secrets of the Supreme Being, Beloved Radhasoami. He explained to her the great importance of love for and devotion to Guru and appraised her of the methods of Surat Shabd Yoga [Union of the Soul with the Divine Light and Sound Current]. On performing the spiritual practices she experienced bliss within, and her body and mind both attained tranquility. She joined satsang. By attending satsang she awakened her dormant luck. With doubts and delusions gone, and ever-new love and faith aroused within, she practices the methods of Surat Shabd Yoga with love and affection. Her soul constantly soars higher and higher. Guru graciously enables her to witness His ever-new acts of grace. Adopting the shelter and support of the Lord of the Soul in her heart, she accomplishes her task by His grace."  (from, Prem Bani Radhasoami, Volume Two, Agra, India)

In Search of A Genuine Disciple/Student

"One who gives an ear to words of truth and justice, and ponders over them, it is only to him that these words bring happiness. But one, who accepts a word without going into the depth of its meaning, does not benefit from it in any manner." (Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir

Putting On Airs At Maya's Place - Discourse Based on the Bijak and Saakhi Granth of Kabir

Sant Mat Quote of the Week:

From the Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir:

Where a Guru and his disciple, both, are greedy and trying to serve their own ends, there is no way they can achieve fulfillments of their lives. Both these will drown sitting in a boat made of stone. What is stressed upon is that a Guru should be abstemious* and a disciple should be one who is selfless and a seeker in its true meaning.

Putting On Airs* At Maya's Place -- Bijak of Guru Kabir, Shabda #104:

kaise taro nath kaise taro, ab bahu kutil bharo;
kaisi teri seva puja kaisi tero dhyan,
upar ujal dekho bagu anuman;
bhav toh bhujang dekho ati bibichari,
surati sachan teri mati toh manjari;
ati re birodhi dekho re sayana
chhow darshan dekho bhesh laptana;
kahahin kabir suno nar banda,
daini dimbh saKal jag khanda.

English:

O Nath! How will you obtain liberation? Even now, you are full of evil thinking. What sort of service do you render, and what type of ritual and meditation do you do? Externally you are white like the crane, but inwardly you harbor evil intentions. Your conduct is like that of a cobra and is immoral. Your mind is like a falcon and your intellect like a cat ready to snatch its prey. You appear to be very wise, but you are really very hostile to others. You are wrapped in your six philosophies and the garb of your sect.

Kabir says: "O servant of God, listen to me! The witch [Maya, illusion] is eating up all the foolish people of the world".

Commentary By Dr. Jagessar Das:

In this shabda, Guru Kabir is talking about people who outwardly appear to be very religious, but inwardly have evil thoughts and intentions. Maya is deluding them. One example he gives is the Nath Yogi. The Nath sect derives from Gorakhnath who was a great Hatha Yogi. The Nath yogis slit their ears; they wear huge earrings, and will sit near a continuously burning fire called the dhurii. They carry the trident, and smear their body with ashes, and have matted hair. They are supposed to be descended from Lord Shiva. They take pride in their yoga and strive to achieve various powers. Guru Kabir uses the example of the crane that is white and stands on one leg in the water as if in meditation, but it's intent is to pluck the fish as soon as it passes by. Similarly, people behave like the snake that can bite and kill you with it's poison, or they behave like the falcon that swoops down and grabs another bird. Or like the cat that snatches the mouse. Many religious people display these types of behavior in terms of snatching power and authority, driven by vanity, ego and material possessions. Guru Kabir says these are not the marks of a true devotee of God, but they are the ones who are deluded by Maya and have impurity in their heart. They impress others with their outward appearance and knowledge, but they become hostile to those who may oppose them. They are very fond of philosophies and appearances. Guru Kabir advises that people are like children who do not know better, and so Maya is figuratively, eating them up. True devotees of God must be pure in thoughts, words and deeds, and free from ego, and their intellect and meditation should be pure, as the pure soul that inhabits within.

From the Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir:

Pay obeisance to that Guru who has attained the True Knowledge of the name of Ram [God, Sat Purush] (who has accomplished God-realization), because without the name of Ram the heart remains as dark as a house without a lamp. And so, it is advisable that one should always remain in the shelter of such a Guru.

*NOTES:

"Putting On Airs": holier than thou, act superior, lord it over, queen it over;

"Abstemious": characterized by abstinence or moderation, sparing in the indulgence of the appetite or passions;

Subtle Sounds For Those Following A Subtle Path

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

"And if you listen very hard,
The truth will come to you at last."
(lyrics from, Led Zeppelin, Stairway To Heaven)

"I am the Voice whose Sound is manifold
and the Word whose appearance is multiple....
I am the hearing which can be attained by everyone."
(Thunder: Perfect Mind, a Gnostic Gospel)

"Let him close the ears with his thumbs. … This is my most beloved Yoga. From practicing this gradually, the Yogi begins to hear mystic Sounds (nadas). The first Sound is like the hum of the honey-intoxicated bee (matta-bhrnga), next that of a flute (venu), then of a harp (vina); after this, by the gradual practice of Yoga, the destroyer of the darkness of the world, he hears the Sounds of ringing bells (ghanta), then Sounds like roar of thunder (megha)." (The Shiva-Samhita)

When the aspirant has recognized this Nada [Inner Sound] and familiarized himself well enough with it, he will perceive that, contrary to the ever-changing inner and outer conditions that he was used to up to that moment, this mystical Sound has a strange unearthly continuity about it. In addition to the description of this Sound given in the previous chapter, it can also be compared to the soft whisper of the wind and the continuous hissing noise of the ocean waves, with a shrill "ultra" Sound on top of it, composed of all the harmonics in the Universe. On higher spheres, this sacred Nada will have a strange sort of silvery aspect to it, somewhat similar to the uninterrupted jingling Sound of very little pieces of glass, with other smaller, ever more subtle Sounds superimposed on it, until finally these finer Sounds seem to disappear into infinity.

In the beginning, the seeker should fix his attention on the part of the Sound that is most shrill and, as explained in the previous chapter, oscillating slightly somewhat like the twinkling of a star. It will be easier to hear that way. Later, when the aspirant gets more familiar with it, he will begin to hear two or more Sounds at the same moment. At first he may not quite realize, or be really sure, that he is hearing two Sounds simultaneously. However, if at such times he listens carefully, he will note that one of these two sounds is slightly more obvious, whereas the other is a little more high-pitched and more subtle. He should listen carefully to both Sounds for a while until it becomes absolutely clear to him which of these two Sounds is the more subtle and high pitched. It is to this one he must then gently let his attention turn and concentrate on. He must not be tempted to follow the more obvious of these two Sounds any more -- even though it will keep intruding and drawing him back to it. If the seeker has reached a sufficient degree of enlightenment and is attentive enough in outer life, he will find that, in the same way as when meditating his attention is at first drawn to the Sound that is more evident, so, in the outside world, people without realizing it almost always let themselves be tempted by and attracted to the more obvious aspects of life -- whereas the more subtle and finer ones unfortunately escape most people most of the time.

As Within, So Without

This applies to everything that people do and to which they have leanings, including the kind of friends to whom they are drawn, the sort of entertainment to which they are attracted, the things they ordinarily like, and so forth. This tendency is equally applicable to their choice in the various arts -- which is very revealing of the level of their thinking and being.

The subtler and more lofty aspects of art seem always to escape the majority of people. In understanding all this, it should be apparent that, if someone is not sufficiently transformed through his spiritual struggles, and has not acquired the necessary inner discernment to deal with this tendency in him while he is still alive, then the same problem will confront him when he leaves this form of existence. He will gravitate blindly to the more obvious states, and the more subtle ones will be lost to him.

(Edward Salim Michael, "The Law of Attention - Nada Yoga and the Way of Inner Vigilance", Published by Inner Traditions books of Vermont)

First he sees the Light

and then he hears Sound, too.

Sound has a natural and inherent property

One who is capable of grasping

Kabir Poems: Lily-Like Soul, and, Ocean-Heart of Mercy

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

O Lily-Like Soul!

O lily-like soul!
Why are you withering?
Your stem is in water,
The water is in the pond,
The pond is God.
It is while in the water that you grow,
And in it that you live
You ARE always in the water!
There is no heat below you,
And no fire above you.
So what flame is afflicting you,
That you are withering so?
Kabir says, "Those who remain in the water,
And continue to absorb and be absorbed by it,
Kabir knows they will nor die."

Ocean-Heart of Mercy

Keep on doing your work.
Keep on reciting God's name,
And you will live pleasantly in the world.
With true love as your master,
Your life-map will change.
Remember the promise you made [in the womb],
That you would use your body wisely?
How easily you have forgotten it.
You have earned no merit.
You have become quite intoxicated with the world,
And lost the true wealth you possessed.
At the end of life you will be compacted,
Into innumerable birth forms.
You obtained human form,
After enduring sufferings and difficulty,
So set your vision straight ahead,
Walk the path of life.
Your feet have become delicate,
And at anytime, they could give way.
Abandon treachery and deceit,
Lose attachment and illusion,
Avoid strenuous effort.
Instead, develop love for God,
Seek refuge at God's feet.
The ocean heart of mercy is like wax,
As soon as conditions are right,
It melts with love for you.

Book of Mirdad: Let Time revolve about you; but you revolve not with Time

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

The wheel of time revolves in the voids of Space. Upon its rim are all the things perceivable by the senses, which are unable to perceive a thing except in Time and Space. So things continue to appear and disappear. What disappears for one at a certain point of Time and Space appears to another at another point. What may be up to one is down to another. What may be day to one is to another night, depending on the 'When' and 'Where' of the looker on.

One is the road of Life and Death, O monks, upon the rim of the wheel of Time. For motion in a circle can never reach an end, nor ever spent itself. And every motion in the world is a motion in a circle.

Shall Man, then never free himself of the vicious circle of Time?

Man shall, because man is heir to God's holy Freedom.

The wheel of time rotates, but its axis is ever at rest.

God is the axis of the wheel of Time. Though all things rotate about Him in Time and Space, yet is He always timeless and space-less and still. Though all things proceed from His Word, yet is His Word as timeless and space-less as He.

In the axis all is peace. On the rim all is commotion. Where would you rather be?

I say to you, slip from the rim of Time into the axis and spare yourselves the nausea of motion. Let Time revolve about you; but you revolve not with Time.

An Ode to the Sant SatGuru, in Praise of the Sant-soul of love who has reached the 5th plane or above, and merged in God. With gratitude to the Competent Qualified Teacher, the Living Master, the Living One. In a Sea of Samsara, of falsehood, illusion and posing, there is a bright Light in the darkness. A silent Music becomes audible. At the feet of such a Loving, Radiant One, the soul can not help but find inner Light and slip into deep samadhi meditation. In the eyes of the Sant are love, wisdom, light, compassion, grace, and a reflection of God. The definition of a Sant Satguru is someone who connects the soul with the Supreme Lord of Love.

Readings are from: The Gospel of Thomas, Verses of Mirabai, Julian P. Johnson's praise of his spiritual Master in the book, Unquenchable Flame, two bhajans of Sant Dadu Dayal of Rajasthan, The Harmony of All Religions, and my Ode to the Sant Sat Guru.

True Satsang: Association with the Eternal Truth or God

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

"The place where people are always talking about the glory of the Lord and of the way to increase love and devotion in the Holy Feet of the True Lord, and about the secrets of the path of Surat Shabd Yoga, is true Satsang." (Exalted Precepts/Guru Updesh, Huzur Maharaj, Agra, India)

Below is from the book, The Harmony of All Religions, Chapter Seven: Sant Mat:

The word satsang is comprised of two words: sat and sang. What is sat?

Sat is that which can never be destroyed and is ever-existent. It is the essential element, indestructible and beyond the limitations of time. And it is Truth or Being. Sang means association or contact. Thus, the word satsang refers to association or coming into contact with Sat (Truth).

In the Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna states:

"Whatever is Truth always exists and is never non-existent. That which is non Truth has no existence whatsoever." (2:16)

Satsang can be stratified in to following categories:

The Three Levels of Satsang

Level One: The First Kind of Satsang (Association with God):

What then is this element which is indestructible, has always been constant and will forever remain as such? This principle is the Supreme Being of the universe. Association with this Being, in reality, is association with Truth (satsang). But, what is it that could associate with this Supreme Being? Is it the body or the senses? The answer is that it is neither of these two. It is only apart from the body and senses that we will be able to associate with the Supreme Being. This is because it is only our soul that is an inseparable part of the Divine. It is only we (our soul) that are capable of merging with the Divine. Our individual soul is truth, and also, the Supreme Being is Truth. True satsang is the unity of the soul with the Supreme Truth. This is the highest kind of satsang. However, this highest kind of satsang, unity with the Divine, does not occur suddenly. This category of satsang requires many lifetimes of good actions samskaras (spiritual imprints and tendencies).

Level Two: The Second Kind of Satsang (Association with the Saints):

Sant Tulsidas Ji emphasizes the association with the saints for the realization of the Divine:

"The association of the saints brings association with the Divine, and alliance with people who are engrossed in the world leads the way back to this world again and again."

To attain Ultimate Liberation it is essential to have association with the saints. Saints, those who have realized the true form of God, become that True Form. The accomplished great beings who have attained unity with the Divine, and who have experienced the Supreme Being even while living in this body, have become the Supreme Being [meaning they have become one with their true Divine Form]. Association with these saints is this second category of satsang. However, finding such a saint is not an easy task. A true saint is rare and difficult to find.

Sant Tulsidas explains in the Ramacharitmanas:

"Without accumulation of many good deeds one will be unable to gain the association of a great saint."

When our good karmas permit, we are able to come to experience the association of these sentient beings. A more important point is that even if we have a direct encounter with such a saint, we often do not have the wisdom to be able to recognize a genuine sage.

A great Sant Tulsi Sahab states the difficulty in recognizing a saint:

"If someone says, 'I have recognized a saint,' then I put my hands on my ears in astonishment." [It is not an easy task.]

If it were possible for ordinary people to recognize saints, then why, since antiquity, have so many great saints, sages, and prophets have been tortured, maimed and killed? Many saints throughout the ages have had to face horrible atrocities. This simply would not have happened if people were able to recognize the genuine great saints.

Level Three: The Third Kind of Satsang (Association with the Words and Writings of Ancient Sages and Saints):

In daily life we need the guidance of a great sage or saint. Even though we might hear about or encounter many so called mahatmas or sadhus, the task of finding and identifying an accomplished guide is difficult. A truly great sage is a rarity. So, in consideration of this, how would satsang (association with a true saint) be possible? The answer is that we can study the teachings of the great saints of the past, because in their teaching, we will find the elaboration of the Truth. This then is the third category of satsang. Generally, when we speak of satsang, it is this third category that is meant. This kind of satsang includes the study of scriptures and the words and writings of the saints and prophets of the past.

As we continue diligently in this third type of satsang, we accumulate the meritorious karmas which will lead to the meeting with a true saint. Then we will be able to do the second category of satsang and will have a good fortune of listening to the words of realized beings who presently reside among us. As we continue in association with a great saint, and with the saint's blessings, we will gradually begin to meditate and undertake the prescribed spiritual disciplines. By diligently practicing these disciplines, we will one day, experience the first category of satsang -- the association with the Supreme. When we have thus accomplished the highest category of satsang, our life's ultimate purpose will be fulfilled.

We will now examine some of the scriptures and the sayings of saints in this regard:

In the Yajur Veda, satsang is known as the Buddhi yoga (dhiyam). This is the yoga of intellectually discerning the truth. The Yajur Veda elaborates on the significance of the Buddhi yoga:

"O Dear Aspirants! In order to realize the essential form of the Supreme Being, first practice the Buddhi yoga (satsang), then Manas yoga (practice mantra and focus on the Divine form), and the Yoga of Light (Dristi yoga). By these practices you will establish the ground for the realization of Divine Union."

In the Maha Upanishad, satsang is considered essential for Liberation:

"On the gate of liberation are found four gate keepers endowed with wisdom. These four are: discipline, thoughtfulness (reflection), contentment and association with saints."

Sant Tulsidas Ji sings in the praise of satsang:

"Without the association of great saints, there is neither discourse of the Divine nor the understanding of the scriptures. Without these two, selfish attachment does not loosen its grip. And without dispelling attachment to the world one cannot attain the realm of the Divine and the true devotion that is essential to realize the Divine."

Further, he says:

"Wisdom, fame, supreme salvation, attainment of all powers and kindliness are all realized by the power of satsang. No other means are prescribed in the Vedas to attain these."

Sant Kabir Sahab elaborates on the purpose of satsang:

"Discord and delusion can be removed by the power of the association of saints. For those who associate with saints, suffering dissolves and they will remain immersed in joy. Joy arises from noble company and pain arises from association with the wicked, says Kabir, go to a place where saints dwell and their association is possible."

A great woman saint, Sahjo Bai, has also said:

"Whoever comes to satsang is released from the confinements of individual caste, status and color. Even the flow of dirty water, upon reaching the holy River Ganga, becomes Ganga (loses its impurity and comes to be known as the holy river)."

Sant Sundar Das Ji says:

"All people have a mother and father as well as relatives and friends. It is easy to obtain sons and wives, but it is very difficult to find true satsang (association of true saints)."

Sant Tulsi Sahab says:

"O Aspirant! Perform satsang by subduing the mind and taking refuge in saints. Keep in your heart a ceaseless burning desire to be at the feet (tutelage) of saints."

Maharishi Mehi Paramahans Ji asks his aspirants to perform both kinds of satsang:

"Dear Aspirants! Each day strive to do both kinds of satsang: inner and outer. Outer satsang is listening to the teachings of great saints and studying the sacred texts. Inner satsang is the practice of one-pointed meditation."

Yogi Panchanan Bhattacharya Ji says:

"By association with a pure soul the mind becomes pure and the darkness of attachment is dispelled. In attending to these quotes from different saints it becomes clear that satsang is vital and very necessary for any serious spiritual seeker."
