Ocean, Wave, and the Drop, also, Right-Hearted Seva (Selfless Service)

Below: 1) from, Petals of Love, and
2) from, The Discourses of Maharaj Saheb

Ocean (God), Wave (the Living Master/Sant Satguru) and Drop (the Soul)

The relationship between the Supreme Being, the Guru and the jivas [souls] has been well compared with ocean, its wave and the drop. The Supreme Being is the ocean of all bliss, light, life, sound and truth. The Guru is the wave which is always in union with the ocean and not different from it and the jiva [soul] with the same attributes is a drop far away from the ocean. This contact between the drop and the wave is the true Bhakti [path of love]. Therefore, emphasis has been laid upon establishing contact between the Guru and the disciples at all levels, that is, physical, mental and spiritual. This contact would be developed through the company of the Guru, both external and internal. The external company of the Guru is called the 'external satsang' and the internal company of the Shabd form of the Guru is called the 'internal satsang'. There are four essentials on which this faith bases its tenets:

1. Sat-guru

2. Sat-sang

3. Sat-anurag (True Bhakti)

4. Sat-nam (the true name, that is, Radhasoami Nam) or Sat-shabd

By the Seva [service] and the Satsang [true association] of the Guru the spirit entity would slowly and slowly shake off the coverings [sheaths, subtle bodies] and would be able to catch the Sound Currents and one day reach the Ultimate Abode. The whole process may take a period of four lives which may be shortened in the case of more ardent devotees.

For the attainment of perfect salvation, the Radhasoami Faith like all other Sant sects, shuns all other paraphernalia and external observances and rituals. It has emphasized upon the pure love in the holy feet of the Supreme Being and the Guru. As such it denounces hatred and discrimination among the human beings. All are the children of one Father and as such there is no place for such a discrimination in point of caste, creed or color and thus cannot check one to adopt this faith. According to the Radhasoami Faith, women are entitled to enjoy the same privileges as men. They also can practice Surat Shabd Yoga and gain high spiritual attainments. The champions of this enlightened faith, advocated in the social set up of the nineteenth century the removal of the purdah system for the ladies and urged them to come out of the narrow social restrictions and respond to the call of the time. Moreover, their preachings strengthened the disintegrating Hindu society by effacing the false barriers of caste prejudices.

In a nut-shell, Radhasoami Faith is a gospel of love. Love towards the holy feet of Radhasoami Dayal [Merciful Lord of the Soul], love towards the Guru of the time and love with all the human beings is its cardinal message.

-- Prof. Agam Prasad Mathur, Petals of Love

Ego-based Seva vs. Right-Hearted Seva (Selfless Service)

The strengthening of the outward tendency or inclination, be it even in Parmarthi [spiritual] activities, is harmful and injurious. For example, to cherish a desire for power and authority in the Seva [service, activity] of Satsang or some such other work one is entrusted with, or to become totally engrossed in the Seva of the Head of Satsang or in the personal or special Seva of the Perfect Guru, which may fortunately be allotted to one, if He is present, and to forget the real object, constitutes ignorance. The object of Parmarth [spirituality] is that Surat [soul] and the mind, which are at present getting diffused outside, should withdraw and ascend within. The modes and methods to achieve this end, are Satsang and Abhyas [meditation practices]. Along with these, Seva is also prescribed. If this object is achieved by performing Seva, then it is all right, otherwise, the real purpose will be defeated. But, from this it should not be inferred that performing Seva is of no avail. According as one's grade is, Seva is also necessary and beneficial, but to consider this alone to be the be-all and end-all of Parmarth, and to remain engrossed in outward activities day and night, without giving importance to the withdrawal and ascension of Surat and mind is a gross misunderstanding on one's part.

Some keep their own Swarth (self-interest) uppermost in Seva. Great jealousy also finds a place amongst one another. Changes in the allotment of acts of Seva or taking away of any Seva lead to antagonism and quarrels. That by which one wins the pleasure of the Lord is really Seva. Be it reproof, rebuke or humiliation, one should bear it cheerfully and not try to show off one's cleverness at all.

-- Maharaj Saheb

Kal Mat vs. Dayal Mat, Illusion vs. Truth, By Swami Ji Maharaj, Sar Bachan

(Due to a glitch in the Yahoo Groups system yesterday that effected all groups, causing posts to be reduced to plain text and other formatting issues, I am reposting this. Today we're back to nice colored fonts and photos again.)

http://www.Facebook.com/SantMatRadhasoami
http://www.SpiritualAwakeningRadio.com/santmat.html
http://blogs.myspace.com/SantMat_Mystic

Above, an illustration from, The Anurag Sagar. Notice the souls inside the Palace of Kal. The Satguru does battle with Kal to free the souls. (The genuine Living Teacher guides his or her students through this internal struggle with the mind or ego, this labyrinth of self-sabotaging, limited belief-systems of the negative power, so that the initiates may experience the Divine Light and Sound within and follow the Path back to God, the Ocean of Love.)

Kal* Mat vs. Dayal* Mat, By Swami Ji Maharaj, Sar Bachan Radhasoami Poetry, Volume Two: Maya and Kal [illusion, and the god of death and time, the demiurge] have spread the net. They are afflicting Jivas [Souls] in their own interest. No Jiva can escape to his Real Home. Kal and Maya keep all playing here. Sat Purush [God, the Supreme Eternal Being] observed that Kal was devouring Jivas. For his own pleasure, Kal beguiles Jivas. He does not give out the secrets of the True Lord to anyone. The Merciful Lord is moved with compassion and incarnates in this world as Sant Sat Guru. He explains to Jivas in various ways that the cruel Kal is swallowing them. He says, "Now, do as I instruct. Burn away the net of Kal and escape. Forming a bond with the Sat Guru, proceed Homeward and you will escape and overcome the forces of Kal. This habitation of yours is a creation of Kal who has separated you from Me. This is Kal's dominion. Don't take it to be your Real Home. Believe what I say to you now. Your True Abode is in My Region. I now reveal the details of the various stages on the Way......." (Sar Bachan)

NOTES:

* "Dayal": The Merciful One, The God of Grace and Compassion

** "Kal" - the Limited Perception: The dark blueish current: The "Demiurge" or false god of the lower regions, associated with law, duality, and mind, as in self-sabotaging, limited belief-systems, mental barriers that prevent the soul from going the distance, knowing itself and the Supreme Being. This includes a myriad of religious doctrines designed to keep the soul asleep in the "matrix" of mind and matter and not sitting one's self down to DO THE PRACTICE AND MEDITATE, uniting with the Divine Light and Sound within. Examples of these theological constructs or kalistic belief-systems may include: "I am not worthy to follow the path." "Experiencing heaven is impossible for human beings during the present 'age', 'yuga' or 'dispensation'." "Only after death will the meaning of life and all its mysteries be revealed." "There is no 'time' for me to meditate". "There are no other dimensions or spiritual realms, only mind and matter." "The age of living Masters is over. The last true Master passed on in 1674." "The secrets of the mystics are forever lost." "Hardly anyone has inner experiences anymore." "I will never be successful and reach the third eye center." And perhaps the most insidious of all, the false peak experience: "Congratulations, you've made it. You've mastered the path." "That's all for now". "You've exited the matrix now" (said a voice still inside the matrix).

Namdev Books in English: "Hindi Padavali of Namdev", by Winand M. Callewaert

From Poetry Chaikhana -- Sacred Poetry from Around the World: "Namdev was born in 1270 or 1269 AD into a family of low-caste tailors, though as he grew he showed little interest in the family profession or in any worldly affairs. .... Namdev came under the influence of the bhakti poet-saint Jnanadev, who was several years his senior. Namdev became a wandering minstrel, traveling through the countryside chanting and singing songs of devotion. In his fifties, Namdev settled down again and a group of devotees gathered around him. It was in the household of Namdev that Janabai served as a maid, a revered poetess in her own right."

God* is the One in Many

He is the One in many,
countless are His shapes and forms.
He pervades all that exists;
wherever I look, He is there.
But very few perceive this reality,
for Maya ever enchants us
with her multiple reflections
of color and alluring beauty.

Everything is Gobind*,
Gobind is everything.
Nothing that exists
is without Gobind*:
the one thread strings
innumerable beads --
Prabhu* Himself is the thread,
the threader, the threaded.

River and waves,
foam and bubbles
have all their being
within water itself.
This play of things
is the sport of Parbhama*.
The One cannot be thought
different from the other.

Hope is a lie
and desire a mere dream --
yet both are construed
as actual reality.
But when my guru
gave me his holy wisdom,
I awoke from my dream
and my heart yielded.

Namdeva says,
Behold Hari's* creation;
ponder upon it
with all your heart,
and you will see
that in every pore,
in every living thing,
there is only the one Murari*.

Recommended Books on the Path of the Masters, Inner Light and Sound

1) The Philosophy of Liberation: My number one recommended book on Sant Mat is, The Philosophy of Liberation (Philosophy of Salvation). This is "THE Manual of Sant Mat", written from an Indian point of view for devotees of traditional Sant Mat. There is a translation of it online.

There is a more recent and scholarly translation I highly recommend, which is only available as a hard cover book, via this site:

Online excerpts from this translation:

2) The Harmony of All Religions: At that same webpage, along with The Philosophy of Liberation, is another book: The Harmony of All Religions.

Harmony of All Religions explores inner Light and Sound Mysticism in the world religions: Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikh, Islam, the Judeo-Christian tradition, and there is a chapter dedicated to Sant Mat.

The Sant Mat chapter is online:
The Jainism chapter is online too:
Introduction/Hinduism:

3) Path of the Masters: There is a site where you can download the spiritual classic, Path of the Masters. The PDF File version is quite good. I see they have added some e-book options recently also:

4) Songs of Kabir: The recommend books above cover the technical, esoteric side of the Sant tradition. For the bhakti, devotional, poetic heart of Sant Mat -- the Way back to the Beloved Lord of Love, Songs of Kabir is a great example:

5) The Bijak of Guru Kabir: The Bijak is the real "satsang template" of the Path of the Masters, providing the necessary ethical foundation, inspiration, and basic teachings of the Masters for living a spiritual life, a life of love in this human form, supplying the genuine background, context and principals of the Path. At the following website you'll see excerpts from the three primary sections of the Bijak: the Shabdas, Ramainis, and Sakhis: http://www.Kabir.ca

Hard copies: From that same site, affiliated with the Kabir Association, one can order two complete volumes of the Bijak (Ramainis and Shabdas).

6) Anurag Sagar: The Anurag Sagar (Ocean of Love), a kind of epic "Gnostic Gospel of Sant Mat", in the tradition of Kabir:
Anurag Sagar, hard copy, scroll down to "The Ocean of Love":

7) Radhasoami Mat Prakash: The first book on inner Light and Sound Meditation to appear in English was Radhasoami Mat Prakash ("Light on the Teachings or Way to the Lord of the Soul"), by Hazur Maharaj, published in 1897. It's also available online, serving as a great introduction to the Path of the Masters:

8) Kirpal Singh: The Kirpal Singh Website:
and at, Media Seva:

9) Adi Granth (Shri Guru Granth Sahib, Gurbani) online scripture:

10) History of Sant Mat, Surat Shabd Yoga, Radhasoami: The Sants - Studies in a Devotional Tradition of India - Google Books:

"We must constantly remember our aim is God. And we must not be concerned with anything that makes us forget Him." - Kirpal Singh

"Surat Shabd Yoga is the Path of the Merciful Lord. I will hold fast to it, I will never give it up."  -- Swami Ji Maharaj, Sant Mat Master

"I wish I could show you when you are lonely or in darkness the astonishing Light of your own being."  -- Hafez

"Those who meditate on the Eternal, like the great ones have done, will discover the Eternal Teacher, residing in their own hearts."  -- Guru Kabir

"One should engender love for the Supreme Being and take shelter (saran) in His divine will (mauj). Hazur Maharaj said that 'a heart devoid of love or affection is as hard as a stone and does not form a suitable receptacle for the Light of Heavenly Grace and Compassion. .... The Supreme Being loves and takes special care of those who love Him with all their heart and soul and gradually draws them towards Himself -- the Center of Pure Light and Attraction.'" (Agam Prasad Mathur, Petals of Love)

"Jeeva-atmaa (the Individual Self or Soul) is the indivisible part of the Supreme Being (i.e. the Universal Soul). In the bondage state it is called the Jeeva. It is also called soul, an indivisible part of the Supreme Sovereign God. Only the individual soul (Jeeva-atmaa) is capable of recognizing itself. When the Self will be realized, only then it will be merged into the Supreme Sovereign God. Then it can be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. Besides knowing itself, no other method has been articulated in the holy books and scriptures."  (Swami Sant Bhagirath Baba)

"Practice the Yoga of Inner Light and 'Nada-anu-sandhana' (Yoga of Sound, Surat Shabd Yoga). This will remove the layers of Darkness, Light and Sound (that conceal your Soul from the Supreme Sovereign Soul, i.e. God). You will, thus, get to know 'Who You Are'. And, when you know yourself, you will also know God." (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj)

"You can experience the sound of silence in the mind. You hear it as a kind of high frequency sound, a ringing sound."  -- Ajahn Sumedho

Relentlessly Rise Further and Further into the Subtle Sounds of Heaven

"A human being's ATTENTION is the most precious treasure he possesses. .... It is essential for the seeker to understand the importance of his attention in all his spiritual struggles, both in the search for the answer to the enigma of his existence and in his process of transformation."

"When meditating with this Nada [Inner Mystic Sound], it is essential that the aspirant always seek and follow the particular aspect of it that is most subtle and 'ultra' in pitch as well as in brilliance. Even when the Sound becomes very shrill and loud in moments of deep concentration, he [or she] must not be tempted to be satisfied with it merely because it is sharp and resonant. He should relentlessly attempt to rise further and further into ever more subtle spheres of its mysterious Invisible Kingdom." (Edward Salim Michael, "The Law of Attention - Nada Yoga and the Way of Inner Vigilance", Published by Inner Traditions books of Vermont)

"The Sound of the Gross Realm is sweet and harmonious. The Sound of the Subtle Realm is even sweeter and more harmonious than the Gross Realm. As one progresses from the Causal toward the Supra-Causal Realm, the experience is of ever increasing sweetness and harmony of the Sound. In the state of Oneness, the plurality of sounds ceases to exist, and only then can the Essential Divine Sound be experienced. Other sounds of the various Realms are not experienced at this level of the State of Oneness. ... The State Beyond Sound [Anadi, Anami Purush, Radhasoami, The Lord of the Soul, God] is acknowledged in the teachings of the Saints as the Goal of the practice. (Maharshi Mehi, The Philosophy of Liberation - Moksha Darshan)

"One grasps the central sounds of the lower realms and progressively is drawn upward to the sounds of the higher realms. Ultimately, one reaches the center of the Original Sound, the Essential Divine Sound, and thereafter attains the Ultimate State, Sabdatit Pad (State beyond Sound). The Yoga of Sound must be practiced in order to attain the Nameless State (Anami, Anadi)." (Maharshi Mehi, The Philosophy of Liberation)

"Receive initiation from the Guru in the true secrets of Shabd. Practice the modes of Surat Shabd Yoga with love and affection. Listen to the reverberations of Anhad Shabd within you. Regularly practice Surat Shabd Yoga. Contemplate the Guru's form. Behold beautiful scenes and spectacles within. When Radhaswami Dayal [the Merciful Lord of the Soul] is pleased to shower His grace, He will elevate your soul along the Current of Shabd. You will then ascend to your True Home." (Huzur Maharaj, Prem Bani)

Buddhism, Sant Mat, Inner Light and Sound Meditation, also, the Question of God and Buddhism: Chapter Three of the Book, The Harmony of All Religions, By Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj - PDF File: http://spiritualawakeningradio.com/Harmony8-ChapterThree.pdf

You Are A Drop of Soul

"God was a wondrous ocean of Light called love. In this Great Ocean of God there were millions and millions of drops of light that were all fast asleep. And because they were asleep they had no idea how magnificient and shining God was. Each and Every drop was a tiny part of the great ocean of God. Each little drop of Light was called a soul. One of those little drops is you!

"After awhile God willed the creation. He sent forth a wondrous luminous wave of sound and light from his own being and made the entire creation from it. The creation was majestic and beautiful but there were no living things in it to enjoy it. The sound is what makes the body alive and able to jump and run and swim and fly: when the soul's part in the play is finished, the sound leaves the body costume, then the body dies, and no longer lives, breathes or moves. But the soul never dies! Your soul is a radiant drop of God, so the real you lives for ever.

"When the Lord wants one of his souls to come back Home. He makes that person feel lonely deep inside, like something is missing. This is the Great Lord's special way of reminding the soul that its Real Home is not in this world but back in the ocean of Light. God has placed an invisible secret door in every human being. God sends his own Great Power, Mercy and Love down into our world to find the marked soul drops and bring them back Home. This Great Power is called a True Living Master and lives inside a human body that looks like yours and mine. He makes a faithful promise to take the soul back Home. He shows that person how to close his eyes, sit very still and lovingly remember the Great Lord. His mind becomes so peaceful and quiet that he is able to hear the wondrous wave of sound and seek the shining light of the stream that flows all the way back to Ocean of the Lord.

"One day the secret opens, revealing the hidden path within: Thrilled, the soul steps across the threshold, into the starry sky of an amazing new world. The Master's dazzling Form made of nothing but the stream of sound and light! Off in the distance ...... the welcoming lights of Home! Over flowing with love and longing for God, the soul rushes on, until it arrives on the very door step of God." (Journey of the Soul, by Victoria Jones, from a webpage)

Dadu is one of my all-time favorite classic Sants of India. He was a great poet-mystic and spiritual Master of Divine Light, Sound, and Nirguna Bhakti from Rajasthan in the lineage of Guru Kabir. Anyone who studies his teachings will encounter a very genuine, no-nonsense, pure version of Sant Mat with the perfect balance of God and guru bhakti, love and mysticism (Surat Shabd Yoga, meditation). "The One alone dwells within my heart, day and night I repeat His Name. The Name of God alone is true; keep that within thy heart. Dream Theater - I Walk Beside You:

Lyrics: There's a story in your eyes
I can see the hurt behind your smile
For every sign I recognize
Another one escapes me

Let me know what plagues your mind
Let me be the one to know you best
Be the one to hold you up
When you feel like you're sinking

Tell me once again
What's beneath the pain you're feeling
Don't abandon me
Or think you can't be saved

I walk beside you
Wherever you are
Whatever it takes
No matter how far

Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

Summon up your ghosts for me
Rest your tired thoughts upon my hand
Step inside the sacred place
When all your dreams seem broken

Resonate inside this temple
Let me be the one who understands
Be the one to carry you
When you can walk no further

Tell me once again
What's below the surface bleeding
If you've lost your way
I will take you in

I walk beside you
Wherever you are
Whatever it takes
No matter how far

Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

Oh when everything is wrong
Oh when hopelessness surrounds you
Oh the sun will rise again
The tide you swim against will carry you back home
So don't give up
Don't give in

I walk beside you
Wherever you are
Whatever it takes
No matter how far

Through all that may come
And all that may go
I walk beside you
I walk beside you

Glimpses Into Sant Mat Ashram Life: Rishikesh, Sanctuary of Sadhus, Sages and the Occasional Enlightened Master, Sat Guru, by Meggan Brummer, Sydney, Australia

Visiting One of the Maharshi Mehi Ashrams in India

Passing on by the temple entrance I eventually come across a middle-aged American dressed in orange robes peeing behind a rock. His ablutions complete, we engage in the kind of brief conversation designed to assess mutual spiritual worthiness! It transpires he had arrived in Rishikesh some months previously, dipped in the Ganga and prayed fervently for a Master and for spiritual guidance. His prayers were answered by Swarmiji, a holy man who took him on as a pupil and even allowed him to share his dwellings. It is one of those 'coincidences' as it is Swarmiji I am seeking, being fortunate enough to have been previously granted an interview with him.

I am soon led through the simple entrance to Swamiji's living quarters. Swamiji, speaking only Hindi, translated by his American disciple, invites me to sit down on the earthy clay floor besides a beautiful Shrine on which revered pictures of some of the greatest Masters of all time are lovingly displayed - Buddha, Jesus, Krishna, Guru Nath (a great 12th century yogi) and Hanuman, aspired to by many as the perfect devotee, with unparalleled strength and commitment.

The 7th of the 8 Limbs of Yoga - Dhyana

My experience with Swarmiji enforces the emphasis I have noted that Masters place on the practice of dhyana (meditation). Dhyana, Patanjali's 7th limb of Yoga, (as described in the Yoga Sutras), is an integral part of any authentic yoga practice. In fact, the purpose of practicing yoga asanas is considered by many great yogis to be the foundation of one's preparation for dhyana. Through the practice of asanas the body and mind are prepared for the state of inner stillness which would otherwise be illusive to attain.

Swarmiji was devoted to his guru, Maharishi Mehi, who, at aged 90, could no longer walk. Swarmiji would carry him around to give his talks and lectures.

Maharishi Mehi was a disciple of Baba Devi Sahab, whose belief in the importance of yoga can be seen in his words "You may remain Hindu, Muslim, Christian or a follower of any other religion. But while living the pleasures and pains of human life, do not live even a single day without inner meditation." Mahatma Ghandi, one of mother India's most beloved children, was an equally strong advocate of the benefits of meditation, once saying "today I have so much to do, I will need to meditate for two hours instead of one."

Consistent Daily Practice

According to Swami Satyananda Saraswati, even a day's break in one's meditation practice lessens the accumulated benefits, as the everyday impressions which gather in the chitta, (memory) will be more difficult to go beyond. An irregular sadhaka (practicing yogi) either sleeps in meditation or is lost in his samskaras (impressions). "A regular sadhaka is able to overcome sleep and dream states, and experiences are seen on the subtle planes."

Devoted to Meditation Swamiji obviously adopted this dedicated attitude to the practice of meditation. His routine has him in bed by 9 PM and then up at 1 AM to meditate. For 45 years he has been practicing the meditation taught by Maharishi Mehi, a method which has been handed down from Guru to disciple for over 3000 yrs. "Get up early and do your meditation," says Swamji, "5 hours sleep is enough if you have deep meditation, deep meditation."

According to his new American 'cave-mate', Swarmiji starts his day meditating for 3 hours, seemingly entering a state of Samadhi, (a transcended state of Self-realized awareness). He then silently goes about his morning chores - chopping wood, cleaning, carrying water, before taking his daily bathe in the Ganga. "Even though he is walking around and doing his chores he is very introverted and meditative. But in the afternoon he becomes very playful."

Brahmamuhurta - The Best Time For Meditation

In conversation with Swarmiji, he suddenly bursts out enthusiastically with "Brahmamuhurta!" This, I learn, is the time between 3.00 AM and 6.00 AM known as the most favourable time for Sadhana (one's spiritual practices). During Brahmamuhurta, so called as it is considered the most auspicious time for meditating on Brahman (God), the mind is calm and less engaged with worldly thoughts, worries and anxieties. Also the atmospheric energy during this time is more charged with sattva (purity), increasing the likelihood one's practice will go deeper, with the corresponding health and well-being benefits.

Singing the Ancient Wisdom

Quite spontaneously Swamiji picks up a strange looking string instrument which he begins to play. He sings centuries old songs revering enlightened Masters, their spiritual teachings and methods of meditation. Later he tells me that for thousands of years, great yogis have handed down certain teachings through these simple folk songs.

The Purpose of Life

With Swarmiji there is no such thing as idle chatter; he talks of the impermanence of the body and the purpose of life – attaining spiritual enlightenment to avoid samsara (endless rebirth). He reminds me that when I die nothing will go with me; I will have to leave everything behind, except the accumulated spiritual wealth of my personal sadhana [meditation practice].

Guru Nanak Arrived at a Quarrelsome Village - Stories to Transform Your Life
The Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

Once, during the course of his travels, Guru Nanak arrived at a village where the people were a quarrelsome lot. He blessed them and asked them to prosper and live in that village forever. In the next village, where the people were peace-loving, Guru Nanak blessed them too but asked them to abandon the village and disperse. Mardana, his close disciple, puzzled by the guru’s strange blessings, asked him why he blessed the first village with prosperity though its people were unworthy of it, and asked the good people of the second village to disperse. Guru Nanak smiled and answered: "The quarrelsome will only spread unrest and friction wherever they go. So I asked them to remain where they were. But it is better for the peace-loving to disperse and take their good qualities with them so that all those who know them can learn the art of peaceful coexistence."

My Beloved Radhasoami, Supreme-Soul-Lord, The Lord of the Soul
By Swami Ji Maharaj,
From Sar Bachan Radhaswami Poetry,
Volume One,
Agra, India

The Sant Mat Quote of the Week:

My Beloved Radhasoami

Indescribable, Infinite, Unfathomable and Anami [Nameless, The Eighth]
is my Beloved RADHASOAMI [Radha-Swami, The Lord of the Soul, Most High, God, Ultimate Reality].

He is of wondrous form, eternally immersed within Himself in rapturous bliss.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

In Agam Lok [The Inaccessible Universe or Realm, Seventh Plane]
He assumed the form of Agam Purush.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Then He became Alakh Purush in Alakh Lok [Being and Realm Beyond Perception, Sixth Plane].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

In Sat Lok my Beloved Radhasoami assumed the name and form of Sat Naam Sat Purush [True Name, True Timeless Being, Fifth Plane].

In Bhanwar-gupha [Swirling Vortex, Revolving Cave, Forth Plane], the Antar-Jami (all-knowing) presiding deity is none other than
my Beloved Radhasoami.

He halted at Maha-Sunn [Great Void, Barrier of Darkness between the Third and Forth Regions].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

In Sunn [Void, Daswan Dwar, Third Plane, Par Brahm], He became the Imperishable Deity.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

In Gagan Mandal [Trikuti, Three Worlds, Causal Plane, Second Plane, Brahmanda),
He is OMkar Purush, who is without desires.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Still lower down, He assumed the dark bluish form of Niranjan [Lord of First Inner Plane or Level, Astral, Sahas-dal-kanwal, Thousand Petaled Lotus, Anda].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Descending to the heart center, He became subject to desires.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

He, however, reduces the evil propensities associated with the Plane of Senses [Pinda].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Assuming the physical form and body,
He awakens the humanity [Sant Sat Guru, One Who Is Awake].
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

He has assumed the form of three Gunas (1) in this world.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

But Alal-paksh-like (2), He flies up.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

He repairs to His original abode (Anami Pad).
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Then He becomes Anami Purush, as He originally was.
Such is my Beloved Radhasoami.

How can I describe His eminence?
So great is my Beloved Radhasoami.

Rivulets of Sound Emptying Into the Ocean of God

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

In the beginning was the Tao.
All things issue from it;
all things return to it.

There was something formless and perfect
before the universe was born.
It is serene. Empty.
Solitary. Unchanging.
Infinite. Eternally present.
It is the mother of the universe.
For lack of a better name,
I call it the Tao.

It flows through all things,
inside and outside, and returns
to the origin of all things.
(Tao Te Ching, Lao-tzu, S. Mitchell)

"My Master has taught me a lesson:
it repeats itself -- without me repeating it.
When I plug my ears with my fingers,
without hearing, I hear its Melodies." (Sultan Bahu)

"The waves or vibrations of Sound permeate the whole of the body...... It exists in the body in the form of vitality or Life-Current. It exists in the mental sky in the form of Light, while it exists as Sound in the void.... It is the highest duty of every individual to acquire experiential knowledge of this Sound and to investigate or explore the Origin or Source from where this Sound flows out." (Baba Devi Sahab)

"Understand the jiva [soul] as the drop, and the Naam of the Satguru as the Ocean...." (Anurag Sagar)

"Listening to the Sound Current is a separate practice. During the practice you need not repeat the Holy Names nor fix your inner gaze, but only listen attentively, while staying at the back of the eye-brows [third eye center] .... The Sound will draw closer, grow stronger and ultimately come from above, and pull your soul [surat] up to the higher regions." (Kirpal Singh, Spiritual Elixir, Volume One)

"When using this Mystical Sound as the basic support for his meditation, the seeker should also be very alert and attentive as to where the subtler aspects of this Sound are drawing him within himself. He will thus, little by little, gravitate to ever finer states of consciousness and will start to sense an out-of-the-ordinary inner continuity of being that is beyond description and that it is impossible for him to experience in his habitual state. As his meditation deepens, it will bring with it a most subtle, transparent, and luminous consciousness that he will finally become immersed in and one with. He will no longer sense himself in the same way as he did in the past. He will become mysteriously transformed into an unchanging and enigmatic 'Spectator', plunged in the vast silence of an eternal cosmic 'Nowness.'

"The aspirant should look upon this Nada [Mystic Sound] as a Divine Grace and rare opportunity, always turning to it with the utmost respect, revering it as the treasured means that can make his deliverance possible." (Edward Salim Michael, "The Law of Attention - Nada Yoga and the Way of Inner Vigilance", Published by Inner Traditions, Vermont)

The World Is An Illusion -- Practice Meditation

When Satguru Baba Devi Sahib was nearing the time of his departure from this ephemeral world for his true destination, satsangis humbly requested him to bless them with his parting words. Responding, Baba Devi Sahab obliged by saying, "Duniyaa waham hai, abhyaas karo", meaning: "This world is an illusion. Practice meditation." Success With Inner Light Meditation Requires Tenacity of Purpose and Focused Concentration, By Swami Achyutanand Baba, Maharshi Santsevi Dhyana Yoga Ashram, Kolkata, India

Sant Mat Quote of the Week/Quote of the Day:

Swami Achyutanand Baba

The practice of drishti yoga [meditation upon the Inner Light] calls for utmost devoutness and tenacity of purpose. The practitioner who assiduously and patiently practices this meditation will discover that the fickleness or unsteadiness of their concentration gradually ceases and their mind becomes tranquil. It is thus that they shall, with the piercing thrust of their focused gaze, be able to break open the 'tila dwara' (the Third Eye).

This is why Gurudev (Maharshi Mehi Paramhans) said, "Drishi yoga abhyasa atihi karatahi karata, kampani sahajahi chhutai praudha hovai surat. Tila darvaza tutai nazar ke jora se. Are han re 'Mehi' lage takataki khuba, jora barajora se."

Translation: "Through regular, rigorous practice of 'drishti yoga' (Meditation on the Divine Light within), one's attention no longer remains wavering or unsteady, as the surat [the attention-faculty of the soul] slowly matures (becomes absolutely fixed, stilled)." Tila dwara (the Tenth Door or the Third Eye) will break open by the thrust of the focused gaze…So continue gazing inside constantly with all of your attention, says Maharshi Mehi Paramhans ji Maharaj."

The practitioner of drishti yoga [meditation] has to stop seeing outside, and begin to look within. As one's vision gets steadied, the grand expanse of light comes into view. This has been exquisitely portrayed by Sant Gulal Sahab: "Ulati dekho ghata mein joti pasara. Bina baje tahan dhuni saba hovai. Vigasi kamala kachanar, paithi patala sura sasi bandhau, sadhau trikutI dwara. Ganga jamuna ke wara para bicha. Bharatu hai amiya karara, Ingala pingala sukhamana sodho. Bahat sikhara mukha dwara. Surati nirati le baitha gagan para, sahaja uthai jhanakara."

Translation: "Revert within [invert] and behold the stunning spectacles of light within the body. Numerous melodies play there without the aid of any instruments. Flower-like lotuses and Kachanar (Bauhinia Variegata) blossom there. Dive deep within, rein in the Sun (the Pingla nerve or the Yamuna) and the Moon (the Ida nerve or the Ganga), and train your attention at the doors of Trikuti. In the centre of the Ganga (Ida) and the Yamuna (Pingla) lies the repertoire of elixir. Merge the currents of Ida and Pingla in the Sushumna, and lo! The stream of elixir is down-pouring from atop. When the surat (Soul) rises above and gets lost in the inner sky, spontaneously resonating currents of sound are heard."

As a matter of fact, the art of drishti yoga or vindu-dhyana is confidential and has to be taught by an adept Guru [Living One, Living Master, Sant Satguru], without whom this would be but an extremely arduous task.

(Based on an English translation provided by Pravesh K. Singh)

Putting On Airs At Maya's Place - Discourse Based on the Bijak and Saakhi Granth of Kabir

Sant Mat Quote of the Week:

From the Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir:

Where a Guru and his disciple, both, are greedy and trying to serve their own ends, there is no way they can achieve fulfillments of their lives. Both these will drown sitting in a boat made of stone. What is stressed upon is that a Guru should be abstemious* and a disciple should be one who is selfless and a seeker in its true meaning.

Putting On Airs* At Maya's Place -- Bijak of Guru Kabir, Shabda #104:

kaise taro nath kaise taro, ab bahu kutil bharo;
kaisi teri seva puja kaisi tero dhyan,
upar ujal dekho bagu anuman;
bhav toh bhujang dekho ati bibichari,
surati sachan teri mati toh manjari;
ati re birodhi dekho re sayana
chhow darshan dekho bhesh laptana;
kahahin kabir suno nar banda,
daini dimbh saKal jag khanda.

English:

O Nath! How will you obtain liberation? Even now, you are full of evil thinking. What sort of service do you render, and what type of ritual and meditation do you do? Externally you are white like the crane, but inwardly you harbor evil intentions. Your conduct is like that of a cobra and is immoral. Your mind is like a falcon and your intellect like a cat ready to snatch its prey. You appear to be very wise, but you are really very hostile to others. You are wrapped in your six philosophies and the garb of your sect.

Kabir says: "O servant of God, listen to me! The witch [Maya, illusion] is eating up all the foolish people of the world".

Commentary By Dr. Jagessar Das:

In this shabda, Guru Kabir is talking about people who outwardly appear to be very religious, but inwardly have evil thoughts and intentions. Maya is deluding them. One example he gives is the Nath Yogi. The Nath sect derives from Gorakhnath who was a great Hatha Yogi. The Nath yogis slit their ears; they wear huge earrings, and will sit near a continuously burning fire called the dhurii. They carry the trident, and smear their body with ashes, and have matted hair. They are supposed to be descended from Lord Shiva. They take pride in their yoga and strive to achieve various powers. Guru Kabir uses the example of the crane that is white and stands on one leg in the water as if in meditation, but it's intent is to pluck the fish as soon as it passes by. Similarly, people behave like the snake that can bite and kill you with it's poison, or they behave like the falcon that swoops down and grabs another bird. Or like the cat that snatches the mouse. Many religious people display these types of behavior in terms of snatching power and authority, driven by vanity, ego and material possessions. Guru Kabir says these are not the marks of a true devotee of God, but they are the ones who are deluded by Maya and have impurity in their heart. They impress others with their outward appearance and knowledge, but they become hostile to those who may oppose them. They are very fond of philosophies and appearances. Guru Kabir advises that people are like children who do not know better, and so Maya is figuratively, eating them up. True devotees of God must be pure in thoughts, words and deeds, and free from ego, and their intellect and meditation should be pure, as the pure soul that inhabits within.

From the Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir:

Pay obeisance to that Guru who has attained the True Knowledge of the name of Ram [God, Sat Purush] (who has accomplished God-realization), because without the name of Ram the heart remains as dark as a house without a lamp. And so, it is advisable that one should always remain in the shelter of such a Guru.

*NOTES:

"Putting On Airs": holier than thou, act superior, lord it over, queen it over;

"Abstemious": characterized by abstinence or moderation, sparing in the indulgence of the appetite or passions;

Subtle Sounds For Those Following A Subtle Path

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

"And if you listen very hard,
The truth will come to you at last."
(lyrics from, Led Zeppelin, Stairway To Heaven)

"I am the Voice whose Sound is manifold
and the Word whose appearance is multiple....
I am the hearing which can be attained by everyone."
(Thunder: Perfect Mind, a Gnostic Gospel)

"Let him close the ears with his thumbs. … This is my most beloved Yoga. From practicing this gradually, the Yogi begins to hear mystic Sounds (nadas). The first Sound is like the hum of the honey-intoxicated bee (matta-bhrnga), next that of a flute (venu), then of a harp (vina); after this, by the gradual practice of Yoga, the destroyer of the darkness of the world, he hears the Sounds of ringing bells (ghanta), then Sounds like roar of thunder (megha)." (The Shiva-Samhita)

When the aspirant has recognized this Nada [Inner Sound] and familiarized himself well enough with it, he will perceive that, contrary to the ever-changing inner and outer conditions that he was used to up to that moment, this mystical Sound has a strange unearthly continuity about it. In addition to the description of this Sound given in the previous chapter, it can also be compared to the soft whisper of the wind and the continuous hissing noise of the ocean waves, with a shrill "ultra" Sound on top of it, composed of all the harmonics in the Universe. On higher spheres, this sacred Nada will have a strange sort of silvery aspect to it, somewhat similar to the uninterrupted jingling Sound of very little pieces of glass, with other smaller, ever more subtle Sounds superimposed on it, until finally these finer Sounds seem to disappear into infinity.

In the beginning, the seeker should fix his attention on the part of the Sound that is most shrill and, as explained in the previous chapter, oscillating slightly somewhat like the twinkling of a star. It will be easier to hear that way. Later, when the aspirant gets more familiar with it, he will begin to hear two or more Sounds at the same moment. At first he may not quite realize, or be really sure, that he is hearing two Sounds simultaneously. However, if at such times he listens carefully, he will note that one of these two sounds is slightly more obvious, whereas the other is a little more high-pitched and more subtle. He should listen carefully to both Sounds for a while until it becomes absolutely clear to him which of these two Sounds is the more subtle and high pitched. It is to this one he must then gently let his attention turn and concentrate on. He must not be tempted to follow the more obvious of these two Sounds any more -- even though it will keep intruding and drawing him back to it. If the seeker has reached a sufficient degree of enlightenment and is attentive enough in outer life, he will find that, in the same way as when meditating his attention is at first drawn to the Sound that is more evident, so, in the outside world, people without realizing it almost always let themselves be tempted by and attracted to the more obvious aspects of life -- whereas the more subtle and finer ones unfortunately escape most people most of the time.

As Within, So Without

This applies to everything that people do and to which they have leanings, including the kind of friends to whom they are drawn, the sort of entertainment to which they are attracted, the things they ordinarily like, and so forth. This tendency is equally applicable to their choice in the various arts -- which is very revealing of the level of their thinking and being.

The subtler and more lofty aspects of art seem always to escape the majority of people. In understanding all this, it should be apparent that, if someone is not sufficiently transformed through his spiritual struggles, and has not acquired the necessary inner discernment to deal with this tendency in him while he is still alive, then the same problem will confront him when he leaves this form of existence. He will gravitate blindly to the more obvious states, and the more subtle ones will be lost to him.

(Edward Salim Michael, "The Law of Attention - Nada Yoga and the Way of Inner Vigilance", Published by Inner Traditions books of Vermont)

Satsang Discourse

Time Waits For No One

Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero: "Seize the day, putting as little trust as possible in tomorrow." (Quintus Horatius Flaccus) Kabir also said, "What you would do tomorrow, do today, what you would do today, do now." Another version, Kaal Kare So Aaj Kar, Aaj Kare So Ub Pal Mein Pralaya Hoyegi, Bahuri Karoge Kub: "Tomorrows work do today, today's work now. If the moment is lost, how will the work be done?"

"With Swami Ji there is no such thing as idle chatter; he talks of the impermanence of the body and the purpose of life: attaining spiritual enlightenment to avoid samsara (endless rebirth). He reminds me that when I die nothing will go with me; I will have to leave everything behind, except the accumulated spiritual wealth of my personal sadhana." (Maharshi Mehi Ashram, Kuppaghat, Bhagalpur, Bihar Dist., INDIA)

Practice meditation." (From the Preface to the book, "Baal Kaa Aadi Aur Uttar Kaa Ant" of Sant Tulsi Sahab")

Besides knowing itself, no other method has been articulated in the holy books and scriptures." (Shri Swami Sant Bhagirath Baba, from the book, "Santmat Tatva-Jnaan Bodhini" (Quintessence of Sant Mat)

On Being Real, Genuine

"One who gives an ear to words of truth and justice, and ponders over them, it is only to him that these words bring happiness. But one, who accepts a word without going into the depth of its meaning, does not benefit from it in any manner." (Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir)

Simran, Zikhr, Remembrance

"Happiness rests in ever-repeated simran. Sorrow and suffering is removed by simran. Kabir declares with utmost force and clarity: 'Practice this simran and be one with the Lord.'" (Guru Kabir)

"Separation from God is like a well; remembrance of Him is the rope." (Rumi)

Simran, Remembrance: "It is bliss remembering God, even for a moment. But only those who practice it, know it." (Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir)

Sant Satguru Kabir

Ethical/Ahimsa Teachings of the Masters: 1008 Kabir Vani is a partial translation in English of the Saakhi Granth of Guru Kabir:

"Devoting hours to meditation without eliminating bad habits and cultivating good ones in their place, will not get one anywhere. Purity of life is essential for fruitful meditations." (Sant Kirpal Singh)

Death Before Dying -- Die To Live -- Rise Above, Ascend Through Meditation

"If you live for God, all things shall work out in your best interest, not only spiritually but also materially. This is the fundamental law of God and can be realized by all who will practice true living." (Sant Kirpal Singh)

"The reason for your not hearing the Sound is that your mind is so much engrossed in worldly matters that it does not allow the soul to go in. When the mind goes down it ceases to catch the Sound. The remedy is to bring about the concentration of the mind by means of careful repetition, which will make the mind and the soul still and collected and, therefore, able to catch the Sound Current." (Huzur Baba Sawan Singh)

"The Word gives out both Light and Sound. At this end, in the physical plane, the Light and Sound are lost in gross matter. On the finer planes - astral, causal, and spiritual - Sound is audible and Light is visible. At the upper end, the Sound is the finest music unheard by human ears - and the Light is of millions of suns and moons in one ray." (Huzur Baba Sawan Singh)

"In the center behind and above the eyes there is an aperture; on this side of it is the material world, in which we are living now; and on the other side is the astral world." (Huzur Baba Sawan Singh)

"This 'Single' or 'Third Eye' provides an ingress into the spiritual worlds - the Kingdom of God - now a lost realm to most of us...Of this inlet or ingress little is known by the people at large." (Sant Kirpal Singh)

"The practice of Surat Shabd Yoga (Sant Mat) lies in detaching the mind from external objects and attaching it to what lies within, and then catching the Sound Current and traveling on it. This Current connects the individual with its Source." (Huzur Baba Sawan Singh)

Quotes Above from Huzur Baba Sawan Singh and Kirpal Singh are from the new website:http://KirpalSingh.org

Sant Satguru Kabir: "So plunge into the truth, find out who the Teacher is, believe in the Great Sound!"

"By practice of the Word, one speeds on to the Higher Spiritual Planes unhindered; By practice of the Word, one gets into the spiritual plane openly and honorably; By practice of the Word, one escapes the by-paths of Yama, the king of Death; By practice of the Word, one gets in close touch with the Truth. O, great is the Power of the Word, but few there be that know it." (from Guru Nanak's Morning Prayer - Jap Ji)

"Various sorts of Sound Currents reverberate in the human system from which the initiate has to pick up the right one and listen to it, otherwise he will go astray and lose his equipoise. The practical Guru forewarns his disciple and directs which Sound to listen to and which one to discard. A variety of Sound Currents are of a lower order which have to be rejected. The experienced practitioner [of Surat Shabd Yoga] knows that some of these low order Sound Currents can become audible. Therefore the initiate his to be very careful and avoid then in entirety. If not, they are bound to create a sort of roadblock in the ascension process." (Shri Shivbrat Lal, from the book, "Dayal Yoga")

"Begin meditation with internally chanting or repeating the Guru-mantra incantation (the charged words given by a genuine Living Master at the time of Initiation). And then try to visualize the radiant form or image of the Satguru in the still darkness of the inner sky (with eyes closed). Follow that with focusing your attention at the seat of the soul within, i.e. at the Third Eye or the Inner Eye or the Til Dwaar, by making the two streams of consciousness in your two eyes converge in a Point.

"When the two currents of consciousness meet in a Point, Divine Light appears within. Then, practice Surat Shabd Yoga (Yoga of Inner Divine Sound) i.e., try to shift your attention to listening to the Divine Sounds or myriads of melodies (Anahad Naad) ringing inside. Listening to the Divine Sound destroys all the perversions, agitations and fickleness of the mind.

"Ascending beyond or transcending myriads of sounds, try to identify and tune in to the Quintessential Unstruck Melody, called "Saar Shabd" or "Anaahat Naad" which alone is capable of taking you and merging you into oneness with the Supreme Lord; this is the ultimate deliverance, emancipation, liberation." (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj)

"Having come here, I advocate the practice of Surat Shabd Yoga and I instruct you to enter and permeate into the Word. I describe a ladder (pandi) of several steps of Shabd so that you can climb up step by step, reaching the city of Truth (Sat Lok). As it is, forsake this Land of the Drop and move on to the Sphere of the Ocean; have fun and frolic there." (Swami Ji Maharaj, Agra)

"Hearing the Divine Melody, the mind remained absorbed. Obtaining samadhi, it remained devoted at the Gurus feet, and all its mental sufferings have been removed. Grasping the rope of the Divine Melody, the soul has climbed to liberation. At the mountain peak of the Void the decorations are resplendent. There the Nectar rains, and Divine Love keeps flowing. Kabir says: "0 brother sadhu, listen to me! Tasting this Nectar over and over, the mind has become intoxicated." (Kabir Bhajan Amritam)

The Path of God, Anadi Sat Purush, is the Path of the Masters

"The Supreme Being whose abode lies further ahead, is unique and only Sants know about Him. He is Nameless (Anami, Anadi Purush, Soundless) and free from Maya. How to explain what He is. He has no colour, no form and no line of demarcation. Shabd is unmanifest in His region. I am worthless and know nothing but I had the good fortune of reaching His Abode. By placing my head at the feet of all Sants, I could reach that Original Abode which knows no decay. The three worlds are created and they perish, but I have taken my Surat beyond the Fourth Lok." (Param Sant Tulsi Sahib, of the Hathras Satsang)

"Whosoever has concentrated his soul has been redeemed from the fear of Death. She has ascended the firmament with force, and has found refuge at the feet of the Lord. She has taken abode in the infinite region and has attained union with the Beloved. Indeed, 0 Tulsi, she has been delivered from delusion, suffering and fever of countless lives." (Param Sant Tulsi Sahib, of the Hathras Satsang)

"Surat [the attention-faculty, eyes and ears of the Soul] going to glimpse the Absolute, concentrates its gaze at the tenth door [third eye center]. Watching the Luminous Point, the pole Star, the Moon and Sun, the Surat hears many sweet tunes of the five spheres. Mehi says, this is the quintessence of Sant Mat." (The Padavali of Maharishi Mehi Paramahansa)

"My Radhasoami [Lord of the Soul] is a profound ocean of serenity which none can fathom." (Soami Ji Maharaj, Sar Bachan Poetry, Volume I)

"The current which has been instrumental in having brought it [the soul] down here must naturally be the 'True Path' for its return to the Original Source, and whoever finds this current is on the path of emancipation. This current which is the spirit and life current is called in the Radhasoami Faith, 'the Sound Current' or 'Word' or Holy Name." (Radhasoami Mat Prakash, by Huzur Maharaj)

"The sole purpose of the incarnation of the Supreme Being as Satguru is to redeem the Jivas [souls] from the cycle of chaurasi [the transmigratory cycle of births and deaths], to reveal to them the efficacy of Surat Shabd Yoga and to engender into them the true and sincere love for the Supreme Being." (Agam Prasad Mathur - Dada Ji, "Petals of Love")

By The Grace of the Masters

"Hope is a lie and desire a mere dream -- yet both are construed as actual reality. But when my guru gave me his holy wisdom, I awoke from my dream and my heart yielded." (Sant Namdeva)

"The most powerful divine force in your life is the intensity of your devotion to your living Ideal or Master with all understanding and wisdom." (Sree Sree Mentu Maharaj)

"Kabir has conceived of God (Raam), as one eminently attracting humanity to a Communion of Love, and of man's putting his earthly life to its best use in responding to this. The resulting Communion of Love finds the devotee as totally absorbed into God as is humanly conceivable." ("The Encyclopedia of Saints of India, Volume Two: KABIR", Criterion Publications, New Delhi, India)

A Universal Prayer: "Give us what no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, what no hand has felt, and what has never occurred to the human mind." (Gospel of Thomas) "Lead us from the unreal to the Real. Lead us from darkness to Light. Lead us from death to Immortality." (Upanishads)

God exists from the beginning and even before the creation of world. Nobody knows who is the first person or Guru who learnt the way of meditation and taught the world. Also, the way to achieve God is inside all the human beings naturally. Only God is the creator of that way and He has established this path naturally inside the human. He was the first who established the relationship between Sadguru and disciple. Nobody can claim that he is the inventor of that path. Yes, Only God can be the first entity who established the path of meditation, and Master-pupil relation. Maharshi Mehi says, "The person who advances on this path and achieves self-realization and salvation while alive becomes Sant (i.e. God-realized soul) and each Sant becomes a new link added in the Sant Mat. This is the continuous ceaseless flow of Sant Mat dynasty." (The Teachings of Maharshi Mehi Paramahansa) /////////

Film: Climate Change, Urgent Action

An Apocalyptic Film: The Age of Stupid: "This ambitious film, directed by Franny Armstrong, combines documentary, animation and drama to examine the issue of climate change. It stars Pete Postlethwaite as an archivist living in the devastated world of 2055. He looks at 'archive' footage from 2008 of real people around the world in the years leading up to the runaway climate change and asks the question: 'Why didn't we stop climate change when we still had the chance'":
Note: Hulu's online films and television are only viewable in the US. There are however several video clips from "The Age of Stupid" at YouTube.

An Ode to the Sant SatGuru, in Praise of the Sant-soul of love who has reached the 5th plane or above, and merged in God. With gratitude to the Competent Qualified Teacher, the Living Master, the Living One. In a Sea of Samsara, of falsehood, illusion and posing, there is a bright Light in the darkness. A silent Music becomes audible. At the feet of such a Loving, Radiant One, the soul can not help but find inner Light and slip into deep samadhi meditation. In the eyes of the Sant are love, wisdom, light, compassion, grace, and a reflection of God. The definition of a Sant Satguru is someone who connects the soul with the Supreme Lord of Love.

Reducing Karma Through
Surat Shabd Yoga

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

Reducing Karma Through Surat Shabd Yoga, By Huzur Maharaj, Prem Patra Radhasoami (The Spiritual Discourses/Love Letters)

Worldly Thoughts and Impulses Should Be Converted into Zeal For Securing Internal Bliss and Happiness -- Spiritual Experience

Man's actions are the manifestations of his thoughts. The mind, by projecting thoughts to sense-organs, enjoys pleasures. It, more or less, identifies itself with these thoughts and pleasures. At that time, it does not think of anything else.

The Effect of the Three Karmas Can Be Effaced By Performing the Meditation Practice of the Radhasoami Faith (Surat Shabd Yoga, Inner Light and Sound)

The meditation practice of the Radhasoami Faith consists in reverting and raising internally the Current of the Surat (spirit, soul) along the Shabd (Divine Sound Stream) and the Light within. The seat of that Current is behind the eyes [at the Third Eye Center].

When such a condition begins to supervene to some extent, as a result of performing the meditation practices, the working of Karmas, both internally and externally, is automatically enfeebled. On getting some bliss and joy internally, and on witnessing the refulgence, grace and mercy of the Supreme Being, the satsangi's mind is, of itself, detached from the world and its pleasures. The pleasures of the world become insipid. The longing for progress in meditation, and higher and higher bliss, goes on increasing. Worldly desires are curtailed. The Abhyasi [practitioner of Shabd Yoga] always gives priority to the will, grace and mercy of the Supreme Being in whatever he does. He subordinates his desires to the will of the Supreme Being. Thus the devotee is entangled in Kriyaman Karmas very little or not at all. This cuts short the chain of his Karmas.

Prarabdh Karmas are those, which unfold in this very life. The effect of such Karmas will be very much mitigated by the grace and mercy of the Supreme Father Radhasoami Dayal [Merciful Lord of the Soul]. To the extent to which an practitioner of Surat Shabd Yoga is able to withdraw from the eyes, he goes on getting detached from the body and the world. In the wakeful state, the seat of the spirit is behind the eyes. It is here that pains and pleasures are felt and Karmas are performed. Therefore, as the Current of spirit is withdrawn from here with the help of spiritual exercises, pains and pleasures cease to be felt. In this way, the effect of Prarabdh Karmas is lightened.

As to Sanchit Karmas, they are stored in Manakash (mind-sky) in the form of seed-impressions. They will fructify in a future life. As the practitioner's Surat penetrates Manakash in its ascent to higher regions, the Sanchit Karmas appear in the form of thoughts and impulses. They come into play for a short while only and are obliterated. That is to say, if the spiritual exercises are performed correctly and methodically, the Surat Shabd Meditation practitioner's soul crosses over the region of Manakash in a short time, and the store of his Sanchit Karams is cleared off.

In this way, all the Karams of a practitioner of the Radhasoami Faith can be exhausted and eradicated in one or two lives. If he is slack in meditation and desires for the pleasures of the world remain embedded in his mind to some extent, purification will take three lives. When the Surat [the attention-faculty of the soul] experiences bliss and joy of Shabd and inner visions in higher regions, pure love and longing for Surat Shabd Yoga goes on increasing day by day.

(Prem Patra Radhasoami, Agra)

My Dear James,

Jai Guru!

Thanks for posting such a beautiful message explaining how the karmas are exhausted with sincere & rigorous meditation.

The view is echoed by Upanishads as well which say,

"yadi shaila samam pApam vistIrNam bahuyojanam |
bhidyate dhyAnayogen nAnyo bhedaH kadAchan ||"

[Even if one has accumulated sins as large in extent as miles & miles of sprawling mountains. |
They get destroyed by meditation; there is no other way (to singe the stockpile of karmas). ||]

Maharshi Mehi Paramhans Ji Maharaj would also very nicely explain this concept. He said that the laws of karma are applicable within the karma - manDala (Sphere of Action) only and can't touch or affect one who has crossed or transcended the karma-manDala just as the laws of a particular country are applicable within the bounds of that country only. The domain of karmas extend only as far as the domain of Gunas extend because actions are powered & effected by the gunas only. The Supra-Causal Domain is the Ultimate limit of Gunas; in this Mahakaran or Supracausal plane all the three gunas exist in perfect mutual equilibrium so that no action or creation can take place here. The Kaivalya/ chetan ManDal or the Domain of the Quintessential Sound (sAra shabd or anAhat nAda) lies even  beyond the the Supra-Causal Sphere and, hence, is beyond the three-gunas and, consequently all the actions.

Therefore, the one who, by diligent & devoted practice of inner meditation on sound, can ascend himself into this Sphere of Kaivalya or Pure Consciousness elevates himself beyond the Sphere of Actions and, as a result, the laws of Action cannot bind him - such a one becomes beyond or untouched by the karmas (because such a person even though he is seen to be discharging normal worldly actions keeps his soul incessantly hooked on to that Current of Quintessential primeval Sound - this, in fact, is surat-shabda yoga in the real sense of term meaning yoga or union of surat or soul with the shabd or the word); all the three types of action simply fall apart for such a yogi.

Mahayogi Gorakhnath Ji has remarked,

"kAyA hansa sangi hvai AvA | jAtA yogI kinahu na pAvA ||" That is, though the soul comes into this world accompanied by the body, nobody (not even Kala, Yama or Death God) can keep pace with the soul of a Yogi when departing the world...and, therefore, such a soul quite easily transcends transmigratory cycles.

This, however,  Maharshi Mehi would caution, does not mean that we can go on committing sinful acts and yet annihilating them with dhyana  yoga. The fact of the matter, he would say, is that a man who is not firm in virtuosity or righteousness can not progress in meditation. Therefore, sadAchAra (righteous conduct, abstention from sinful acts) is an essential eligibility condition for a true seeker.

Jai Guru!

The English Translation:

Myriads of Sounds keep chiming within. |
My mind is lost in the most charming gem that is, Ram (God). ||
The detached mind, that is absorbed day and night in Him, has found home in the void (inner sky). |
My Guru made me see Him, who is otherwise Invisible (to external senses), the most lovable, transcendental, Primordial Lord. ||
(Let the seeker) sit still in a suitable posture, and focus the mind in His thoughts. |
Non-attached to the world, he should get lost in the jingle of countless melodies within. ||
O friends! How to gain access into that Inaccessible region? |
By adopting the essential virtues of truthfulness; restraint, and earning the wealth of the Word of Guru. ||
Earn the wealth of Word (Divine Sound), return to your own abode, and realise Him, the treasure-trove of all virtues. |
He who is without any roots, trunk, branches or leaves, and is the crown in every head. ||
People exhaust themselves pursuing various other (outwardly) ways like jap (chantings), penances, abstinences and hatha yoga and yet fail to attain to Him. |
If only one learnt from a True Guru; and practised accordingly, asserts Guru Nanak, He, the Soul of All, is realised so easily. ||

Surat Shabd Yoga is the Surest Way of Reining in the Mind!
- Swami Achyutanand Ji

SwamI Achyutanand Ji

Translated Excerpts from the book "Bindu-Nada

Dhyan" authored by SwamI Achyutanand Ji

Maharaj

-Translated by Pravesh K. Singh

It is essential to practise bindu–dhyAn, drishTi- yoga or the Yoga of Inner Light before doing nAda–DhyAn, because with continued practice of drishTi–yoga (Yoga of Light) the ability to do nAda– dhyAn is gained. The mind gets completely controlled with nAda–dhyAn. The mind does not merely get controlled, it rather dies down. Sant Charandas Ji has depicted it exquisitely:
"jabase anahad ghora sunI |
indri thakit galit mana hUA, AshA sakal bhunI||"

[Since when I perceived the Divine Sound ricocheting within, all the organs became completely exhausted, the mind melted, and all the cravings were roasted.  ]

How did this happen? He further elaborates,

"ghUmat naina shithil bhayi kAyA, amal jo surat sanI |
roma roma Ananda upaj kari, Alas sahaj bhanI ||"

That means, on turning the drishTi inwardly (i.e. practising drishTi–yoga), and on perceiving the inner sound, the body turned motionless, every pore of it got soaked in divine bliss, and all lethargy, quite naturally, fled away.

It is why Kabir Sahab taught,

"shabda khoji mana basa karai, sahaja yoga hai yehi |
satta shabda nija sAra hai, yaha to jhUThI dehi ||"

[Subjugate the mind by finding the (inner) sound; this is the sahaja (natural) yoga. |
The True or Unstruck Word is our essence; this body of ours is otherwise illusory or impermanent ||]

Sant Charandas Ji further says,

"karate anahad dhyAn ke, Brahma rUpa hoi jAya |
Charandas yon kahata hai, bAdhA saba miT jAya ||"

[By meditating on the Word, the practiser becomes the same as God or Brahman. |
Doing this way, says Charandas Ji, all obstacles are removed. ||]

In NAdavindUpanishad it has been said about the Nada – DhyAn that,

"sarvachintAm samutsrijya sarvachesTA vivarjitah |
nAdamevAnusandAdhyAnnAde chittam vilIyate ||
nAdAsaktam sadA chittam vishayam na hi kAnkshati |"

That is, discarding all worries and all efforts one should mainly focus on the exploration of nAda; by doing thus the mind gets dissolved in the nAda, and the mind thus absorbed in the nAda does not crave anymore for the sensory objects.

NAda itself is Brahma. We should absorb our mind in this very nAda. ShrimadAdya Shankaracharya has stated in Yogataravali:

"sadA shivoktAni sapAdalakshyalayAvadhAnAni vasanti loke |
nAdAnusandhAna samAdhimekam manyAmahe mAnyatamam layAnAm ||
nAdAnusandhan namostu tubhyam tvam manmahe tattvapadam layAnAm |
bhavatprAsAdAt pavanena sAkam vilIyate VishNupade mano me ||
sarva chintAm parityajya sAvadhAnena chetasA |
nAda evAnusandheyo yoga sAmrAjyamichchhatA ||"

[Lord Shiva has listed 1,25,000 ways for dissolution of mind. |
Amongst these nAdAnusandhAna (meditation on the inner sound) is the best as well as the easiest way. ||
I bow to thee, O nAda! For you lift me on to the highest throne. |
It is only with your grace that my prANa-vAyu (vital life-air) and my mind get dissolved in the highest plane of the Supreme Lord. ||
(Therefore,) renouncing all sorts of worries and with an alert & focussed mind...|
Those who yearn for the union with the Highest should meditate on the Divine Sound within. ||]

Balayogi Shri Bala Swami Ji Maharaj has beautifully expressed his views regarding nAda-dhyAna, "This is such a means that enables us easily experience that supreme bliss that is our very own. NAda has a unique power. All of us know of the joy we experience while listening to melodious music in the outer world, but so unique & unparallel is the bliss of this inner melody that the mind gets completely dissolved, and all its cravings get annihilated.

"indriyANAm manonAtho manonAthastu mArutah |
mArutasya layo nAthah sa layo nAdamAshritah ||"

[Mind is the master of all the organs; prANavAyu is the lord of the mind |
`manolaya' (dissolution or absorption of mind) is the boss of prANavAyu, and this dissolution is accomplished with the help of nAda or the inner sound.||]

Perseverant practice of nAdAnusandhAna leads to the dissolution of the mind. By sitting in a proper posture and consistently practising to look within, with the eyes closed, one gets to listen to the nAda."
                                                                                    [Kalyana Yoganka, p 325]

Shruti Bhagvati is very lucid on nAda-dhyAna:

"vAgevArtha pashyati vAgbravIti vAgevArthe sannihitam santanoti |
vAchaiva vishvam bahurUpam nibaddham tadetadekam pravibhajyopbhunkte |
vAgeva vishvA bhuvanAni jagye vAcha itsarvamamritam martyam cha ||"

[We conceive the meaning through word only, speak word only, and elaborate the meaning implicit in the word only. |
Through word alone is this world divided into numerous forms; we take out a part of that and enjoy (use). |
The world has grown out of word only; word alone is the elixir as well as death. ||]

Sant Kabir sings prolific praise of shabda-sAdhanA or nAda-dhyAna:

"Kabir shabda sarIr mein, bin gun bAjai tAnt |
bAhar bhItar rami rahA, tAtein chhoTI bhrAnti ||
shabda shabda bahu antarA, shabda sAra kA sIr |
shabda shabda kA khojanA, shabda shabda kA pIr ||
shabda shabda bahu antarA, sAra shabda chita deya |
jA shabdai sAhaba milai, soi shabda gahi leya ||
shabda shabda sab koi kahai, wo to shabda videha |
jibhyA par Awai nahIn, nirakhi parakhi kari deh ||
shabda hamArA Adi ka, pala pala kariye yAda |
anta falaigI mAnhi kI, bAhar kI sab bAda ||
yahi baDAi shabda kI, jaise chumbak bhAya |
binA shabda nahin ubarai, ketA karai upAya ||
shabda binA sruti AndharI, kaho kahAn ko jAya |
dvAra na pAvai shabda kA, firi firi bhaTakA khAya ||"

[The word, says Kabir Sahab, keeps ringing in the body |
It is pervading within & without; this alone can destroy all the confusions ||
There are many words, each different from the other, the quintessential word is the crown of all. |
One word is explored through the other, as one    word is the Guru of (or leads to) the other. ||
Words are much different from each other; focus yourself on to the Quintessential Word. |
Grasp that Word that would take you to the Supreme Lord. ||
Though everyone talks of the word, that Word is without a body. |
The tongue can't pronounce it; it has to be perceived within thebody. ||
Word has been there before we came into being, remember (meditate on) it constantly.|
This word alone that is found within would prevail in the end, rest all being of least significance. ||
The beauty of the Word is that it acts like a magnet does. |
One can't be liberated without the Word however hard one might try. ||
The soul is blind without the Word, knowing not whither to go. |
Not finding the Word, it keeps wandering again & again. ||]

Lineage of Masters Connected with Sant Tulsi Sahib and Maharshi Mehi: The Philosophy of Liberation

Maharshi Mehi Related Guru Lineage Chart
(Note:
Swami Achyutanand Ji, shown below, is also part of the same lineage associated with Maharshi Mehi.)

Param Sant Tulsi Sahib (older)

Note: The term "Sant Mat" was coined by Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras, during the 19th Century, but the Sant tradition, with its many guru-lineages or branches, is a spiritual movement that dates back to ancient India. Sant Tulsi Sahib was of the opinion that the Sant movement dates back to the time of Krishna thousands of years ago, that Krishna knew of Sants during his day, the time of the Bhagavad Gita.

"The ocean of existence is unfathomably vast and without any port of safety. It cannot be crossed --- If you meet Satguru, the boatman, then only will you get across and reach your Abode.

Listen, O friend! Great is the status of Sants. In that region of Sants there is neither sound nor any form. It is beyond Sunn [void] and Maha-sunn [great void].

Says Tulsi, he knows the True Name of the Abode of the August, Nameless and Infinite Being." (Shabdavalli of Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras)

Sant Mat Radhasoami:

Param Sant Tulsi Sahib (younger)

The soul (Surat), seeking to glimpse the Absolute, concentrates through its gaze at the tenth door,

Watching the luminous point, the pole star, the Moon and the Sun,

Surat hears many sweet sounds of the five spheres;

Mehi says, this is the quintessence of Santmat;

And he has only repeated the words of the saints,

He has understood and tested them fully,

They are so very true and are of great benefit to all.

"The Philosophy of Liberation"
By Maharishi Mehi Paramahansa Ji Maharaj

The Philosophy of Liberation, Published By the Sant Mat Society of North America:

This is the first book in English featuring the teachings of Maharishi Mehi, in the lineage of Param Sant Tulsi Sahib, the famous Saint of Hathras, India. The lineage began with Sant Tulsi, then the torch was past to Baba Devi Sahib. Mehi was the next teacher, the third guru. Soon more writings from this lineage of Masters will soon be published and made available in English to spiritual seekers in the West.

Baba Devi Sahab

This is an intriguing book that provides some surprisingly technical details about meditation practice. Anyone interested in developing their own successful daily meditation practice will greatly benefit from the wisdom and depth of, "The Philosophy of Liberation", as it systematically covers all aspects of the philosophy of the path and the technical details of spiritual practice rarely ever seen in print from any source outside of India. It is not light reading, and that is precisely what I like about it!

Maharshi Mehi Paramhansa (younger)

There are several techniques described, the specific details of which are taught to students at the time of their deeksha (initiation) into the practice: 1) developing a daily routine, the habit of meditating at the same time or times each day; 2) proper posture so that one is truly focused at the Third Eye and remains alert and awake; 3) Manas Japa [simran], a mantra repetition of a sacred word done mentally; 4) Manas Dhyan, the technique of mentally visualising a form of God or one's teacher; 5) Drshti Yoga, the technique of focusing upon an infinitesimal point. This point will eventually blossom into inner Light or visions of Light. One gazes into the middle of the darkness or the Light one sees while in meditation. Think of the infinitesimal point as being like a laser pointer or cursor keeping one focused. One passes from scene to scene and vision to vision always looking toward the center; 6) Nada Sadhana, the practice of inner spiritual hearing [Surat Shabd Yoga]; and, 7th) reaching the State of Oneness with the Supreme Being in the Pure Conscious Realm. The ultimate goal is to merge into the upper level of Kaivalya known as the Ocean of Love and Compassion, the Ultimate Reality of God in the Nirguna or Formless State, also described with terms such as Anami (Nameless) and Anadi (Soundlessness). Maharshi Mehi stated in the Philosophy of Liberation: "The center of the realm of Kaivalaya (Oneness or Pure Consciousness) is the Supreme Sovereign Itself." He also said: "Beyond the Realm of Oneness, there is only the Supreme Sovereign."

Maharshi Mehi Paramhansa (older)

Below are Excerpts from the Book: Moksha-Darsan (Philosophy of Salvation or Liberation), a Primary Text for Understanding Sant Mat (The Path of the Masters)

The Philosophy of Liberation
By Maharishi Mehi
All rights reserved ©2006 Santmat Society of North America
1. Stillness or steadiness is the essence of Shanti.

(Shanti is a Sanskrit word with several English meanings: peace, tranquility, bliss, etc. The peace which results from some degree of communion with God is Shanti.)

2. He who has attained Shanti is a saint.

3. Sant Mat encompasses the thoughts and way of saints.

4. The desire for attaining Shanti is natural in human beings.

In the Upanishads the formula for the attainment of Shanti is expounded by the seers and saints of these ancient works. Similar views have been expressed by the saints of all times, including such saints as Guru Nanak Sahab and Kabir Sahab who expounded their views in the Punjabi and Hindi languages respectively. Such expressions are for the inspiration and edification of all people.

Shahi Swami Paramahansa Ji Maharaj

However, the Upanishads uniquely and fully describe the means for attaining Shanti and describe the means for attaining the Highest Wisdom. That is why the Upanishads are considered the foundation of Sant Mat. Further, a comprehensive exposition of the Divine Word-Sound is given in the Upanishads which leads to the Highest Wisdom. The Upanishads explain the yogic techniques and systematic views of transcending thought and attaining the Absolute through the use of sound (Yoga of Surat-shabda). Sant Mat follows the yogic path as prescribed in the Upanishads and specifically employs Surat-shabda-Yoga in its practices. The result of such practice is the attainment of the Highest Goal, the knowledge of the Supreme.

Swami Harinandan Baba

This is not to undermine the teachings of other saints, but rather to say that in the Upanishads are found the basis of the teachings of these saints. Often the teachings of various saints would, on the surface, seem contradictory to each other or even contradictory to the principles of the Upanishads. In fact, there is an unbreakable unity in the spiritual views of all saints. In different times and in different places saints appear, and their followers name their tradition in respect to the particular saint. The appearance of differences can be attributed to time, place and language, giving varied labels to views which are in reality the same. Likewise, due to excessively zealous followers these seeming differences are often accentuated. When all sectarianism and the forms of the particular time or place of the writings of a saint are removed, the basic principles of Sant Mat are in unity. The Ultimate, Unbounded, Infinite state (as described in section 11) is the unique possession of a saint. Further, the means to attain this state (as described in section 59 and 61) are found in the writings of the saints. Even though there are differences in the name and form of the Deity of worship, the underlying unity of the Unbounded dissolves these seeming differences (according to the idea expounded in section 86).

Swami Bhagirath Baba: "One who crosses this layer of darkness through a special kind of meditation sees the inner Light within oneself. This inner Light is called Aatma-Aalok (Light of the Self) or Brahma-Prakash (Divine Light). On achieving this, the Third Eye opens completely. While gazing into the darkness that one sees with eyes closed, one should mentally repeat the guru-instructed mantra [simran, Manas Jap]."

Surat-Shabda-Yoga as a means to attain the Unbounded state is an integral and indispensable aspect of the Sant Mat tradition. Any tradition devoid of this essential aspect is not true Sant Mat. Various saints describe the Yoga of Surat -Shabda, and from these descriptions we become aware of the significance of Surat-Shabda-Yoga. The following are some words of the great saints, concerning the importance of Surat-Shabda-Yoga:

Guru Nanak Sahab states:

"The invisible and supra-sensory name of God (Divine Word-Sound) is extremely sweet and lovely."

Tuls-Das states:

"I offer homage to the Divine Name of the Universal Being, Ram, which is the cause of the sun, the moon and the fire. That Divine Universal Name is the form of the creator,
maintainer and destroyer."

............One will not succeed in Yoga if purity of character is disregarded. Lying, stealing, smoking, taking of drugs (including alcohol), violence, and adultery are all obstructions to the successful practice meet the Supreme Sovereign).

53. Listening to and study of the discourses on this sacred knowledge is an important step in the Sant Mat tradition. Listening to satsanga (spiritual discourses) is prescribed as an essential activity.

Swami Bhagirath Baba (meditating)

54. The personal and private instruction in the art of this spiritual practice should be received from a Sadguru (an accomplished spiritual master). Once the technique has been learned, one should practice it regularly and daily according to the instructions given by the master.

70. Through constant practice of the Meditation of Sound, the practitioner also experiences the Divine Light. Just as upon attending a concert, one cannot help but notice the beautiful setting, of Upper Nature, the plurality of sounds ceases to exist, and only then can the Essential Divine sound be experienced. Other sounds of the various Realms are not experienced at this level of the State of Oneness because diversity does not exist in the state of Oneness.

Swami Achyutanand Ji Maharaj

75. The State beyond Sound is acknowledged in the writings of saints as the goal of their teachings. In addition, their writings accept repetition of a Divine name, concentration on a form of the Divine, fixing the mind on a point and concentrating on the inner sounds of the different spheres as a means to reach the Soundless State. These four techniques are therefore essential in Sant Mat.

76. Without achieving perfection in the Yoga of Sound, the realization of the Supreme Sovereign God or the Knowledge of the Self cannot be achieved.

77. Without resolute devotion to the guru (a spiritual master), even by means of the Yoga of Sound, the realization of the Supreme Sovereign God is not possible. Without the help of the master, it is not possible to attain the full devotion for the Divine and the highest good.

82. The recognition of a true spiritual master is the most difficult of tasks. However, the one who has purity of character (rectitude), who practices diligently the Yoga of Sound, and who can explain clearly Sant Mat (the path of saints) can be accepted and trusted and given devotion as a spiritual master. A person without rectitude or purity of character, regardless of the other qualities just mentioned, should not be regarded as a true master.

If one has accepted a spiritual teacher and later finds him or her lacking in rectitude, that teacher should be abandoned. In spite of the teacher’s exquisite knowledge, association with that teacher is not desirable if he or she is lacking in moral character. As the aspirant is particularly affected by the teacher’s moral character, it is imperative to avoid teachers without moral virtues. Purity of character is the essential quality of a teacher and if purity is lacking that teacher is no better than an animal. A teacher lacking purity of character or other essential virtues is a false spiritual teacher. The fruits of accepting a true master are immense. Unfortunately, true teachers are few and difficult to find. A spiritual master who is wise, pure and a practitioner of the Yoga of Divine Sound gradually imparts his or her virtues to the student. The good will of the spiritual teacher cannot but help affecting the aspirant in a positive manner because one is affected by the power of a higher vibration. Section 77 describes the qualities of the teacher and how the aspirant benefits from his or her relationship with the teacher.

The master who practices the Yoga of Sound but is negligent in his moral character and in his spiritual knowledge is harmful to the seeker of spiritual knowledge. If one has accepted such a master, disregarding the importance of rectitude and knowledge, the aspirant would be deprived of the benefits of the association with a true preceptor, mentioned in the previous paragraph. In addition, in following an immoral teacher the aspirant would have the difficult task of not going astray, much less advancing on the spiritual path. However, without the aid of a true teacher this spiritual task can be undertaken by a few steadfast learned disciples. For most it is almost impossible to undertake this task. of gaining grace as described in the writings of the saints.

83. The aspiration to serve with love and behave humbly before the teacher arises naturally in the hearts of students. Therefore, devotion to the spiritual teacher is also natural. To say anything against devotion to the teacher is pointless. And also, the wise will not give devotion to an unworthy teacher and will influence other aspirants to do the same.

84. The four essential elements an aspirant of the spiritual path needs are the following: one, association of saints and hearing of things spiritual; two, moral rectitude; three, dedication to the teacher; and four practice of meditation. These essentials have previously been discussed; association is referenced in section 53; moral rectitude is addressed in section 60; meditation is referenced in sections 54 through 59. In Sant Mat an intense eagerness to acquire these essentials must be present. However, devotion to the teacher is paramount to the other three essentials and is the key to achieving the other three.

85. The desire of an individual to be free from sufferings and to attain the happiness of absolute peace is naturally present in the hearts of all. The purpose of Sant Mat is to provide a system which fulfills the desires of attaining absolute peace.

Swami Vyasanand Ji Maharaj

87. The practice of Nadanusandhana (the Yoga of Sound) is not mere child's play. Its full practice cannot be exercised by one who lacks Yama and Niyama (virtues and moral rectitude). See the following section 88 for more detail on Yama and Niyama.

There are sounds due to gross vibrations in the material body. To meditate on these gross sounds and believe it to be as the full practice of the Yoga of Sound shows a lack of knowledge of Yoga. According to the literature of the Sants (Saints), Yama and Niyama are essential for mastery in the practice of the Nadanusandhana (Yoga of Sound [Nada-nu-sandhana, the spiritual practice of inner Sound meditation, also called Surat Shabd Yoga]).

88. Yama consists of five disciplines: satya (truthfulness), ahimsa (non-violence), asteya (non-stealing), brahmacarya (continence), and aparigraha (control of greed or non-possessiveness).

Niyama also consists of five practices, which are the following: sauca (internal and external purity), santosha (contentment), tapas (penance), svadhyaya (study of spiritual matters) and lsvara pranidhana (meditation on God).

89. In following Yama and Niyama, one exercises aversion from the five sins, serves the spiritual master, attends satsang, and practices meditation as referred to in section 60.

90. A comfortable asana (a pose of sitting or posture) of keeping the head, neck and trunk straight and steady is a must for meditation. Without the ability to sit in such a steady posture for prolonged periods, meditation cannot be practiced.

91. Meditation should be practiced being alert, without being drowsy, shutting the eyes comfortably and without turning the eyeballs or pressing them in any way.

92. The practice of meditation should be an essential part of the practitioner's daily routine. The preferred time of meditation is Brahmamuhurta ([Hour of God: Brahma-mu-hurta, or Amrit Veela: Hour of Elixir]: very early in the morning: 3:00 A.M.). Likewise one should meditate at mid-morning and then again in the evening time. While falling asleep, one should also engage his mind in meditation. Further, it is good to practice Manas japa [Simran] or Manas dhyana [Dhyan] while working.

Swami Vyasanand Ji Maharaj (in his meditation cave)

93. Before learning the Nadanusandhana (meditation on inner Sound) in practicing Manas japa (mantra repetition), Manas dhyana (focusing on the form of the master or deity) and Drshti Yoga ([inner Light meditation in the Third Eye Center or Eye-Focus] focusing on a Point that is practicing one-pointedness), one should meditate with eyes and mouth shut. Upon learning Nadanusandhana (Yoga of Sound [Inner Sound meditation]) from the Master, one should also close the ears.

94..........In the initial stages of dhyana (absolute concentration), pratyahara is practiced. [Note: Pratyahara means to bring back. Bringing back or refocusing one's attention during meditation, bringing the mind distracted by worldly thoughts back to the Focal Point during meditation.] Through the means of pratyahara, the mind is brought back repeatedly to the Focal Point. By this constant practice of pratyahara, one is eventually able to concentrate for a short period on the Focal Point. This state of concentration is called dharana (steadiness of concentration or absorption). When absorption is maintained for longer and longer periods of time, then it is dhyana (absolute concentration). Then in this state of dhyana, one is able to grasp the Streams of spiritual Sounds (described in section 60) and finally achieves samadhi (Unity [Union, Absorption, Oneness in deep meditation]). Drshti Yoga (seeing the inner Light---the Yoga of Vision) will greatly facilitate pratyahara and dharana......

............The saints and true teachers are known to be impartial; their blessings fall like the rain. However, the rain, while falling on all, tends to collect in deep pools just as the grace of the saints while showering on all flows rapidly and collects in the deep pools of the aspirants who are devoted. It is not surprising that the aspirants through their devotion draw the grace of the master towards them. Aspirants who give great attention to the ways of the teacher are worthy of the gift of knowledge. Obviously, not the careless one, but the one who honors the gift and cares for the receiving bowl receives the gift of the grace of the teacher. Making oneself worthy is the secret of devotion to the master, and will greatly facilitate meditation explained in detail in section 59.

105. The means to attain the direct knowledge of the Supreme Sovereign

Swami Vyasanand Ji Maharaj

God (Summary of the Philosophy of Liberation)

Before learning the technique to attain the direct knowledge of the Supreme Sovereign, intellectual understanding of the essential nature of the Supreme Sovereign God and one’s own self is necessary. Through hearing and studying the discourses of spiritual teachers and contemplation, such knowledge can be acquired. Along with knowledge of the order of creation, the reason for not having the direct knowledge of both should be sought. Through intellectual understanding of the essential nature of the Supreme Sovereign, it is determined what needs to be attained. One should be able to discern whether it is the body which realizes the Supreme or the Self, Knower within the body.

Also, for this realization should the practices be of an external nature (outwardly devotional practices) or internal nature (Yoga of Vision and Yoga of Sound)? Having come to an understanding, these wanderings will be left behind. After gaining the intellectual knowledge of one’s Self, one will understand whether one is suited for attaining this Knowledge. Once, intellectual knowledge of the order of creation and the reasons for not having direct knowledge of God and one’s own Self are understood then the means will be brought to light. With this revelation one will be able to go be ultimately merging in Soundlessness or the Supreme Sovereign God. The internal practice of meditation ends here: the Supreme God is realized and the work is completed.

98. The practitioner should support himself in gainful employment, living on one’s own earnings. The aspirant is best content with a few things.

99. The aspirant should keep himself free of impulses such as lust, anger, greed, delusion, egotism, jealousy and fear. In his interest for spiritual progress, the practitioner should create pure mental habits: compassion, mercy, contentment, forgiveness and humbleness.

100. The following should be avoided because they cause unsteadiness of the mind: intake of intoxicants, including alcohol and various non-prescription drugs, and eating of meat and fish.

101. Through association of saints, the hearing of spiritual talks and study, wisdom can be acquired. Wisdom is essential in determining what is the right way to live your life. Without wisdom one can make poor decisions, which result in undesirable consequences.

...........In conclusion, as has been stated the microcosm and macrocosm are interconnected as they are completely permeated by the realms described above. Likewise, to go beyond all the realms is to go beyond all concealments. Further, in whatever realm the individual dwells, he dwells in that realm both in the microcosmic sense as well as the macrocosmic sense. In addition, if one ceases inhabiting one of the Realms, then he leaves behind both the microcosmic as well as the beyond the concealments of Causal Nature imposed on the creation and the Self and then will meet with the Supreme and experience direct knowledge of the Supreme Sovereign God. (The Philosophy of Liberation, By Maharishi Mehi)

Maharshi Mehi Paramhansa (young)

Mystic-Verses from the Padavali of Maharishi Mehi

Fully plunged into such a practice one becomes extremely cool and calm,
And forgets all about one's material body;
Paramhans says such introvert-aspirants remain completely unaware of morning, day and night.
And are effortless as if dead from outside,

Paramhans says, sounds like the beating of drums and roaring of clouds are heard in the cosmos,
Above Trikuti, are colourless, shapeless compartments, where there are only resounding sounds;
The true spiritual aspirant remains in Dhyana Yoga,
And with Yoga of Sound reaches the Highest Realm;

The Yoga of Sound causes such wonderful experiences;
On getting such a perceptive Guru, one knows how to do meditation upon inner Sound,
That Matchless Sound which never changes is the Quintessential One,
And that Quintessential Sound is finally changed into the Soundless One.

Saints describe it with words such as "Soundless", "Nameless" or "Wordless",
The Quintessential one along with surat [soul] at the final stage disappears,
The very stage of Soundlessness, Wordlessness or Namelessness is entirely different,
According to Mehi that stage is devoid of dualism,
Surat, merging with the Absolute, never returns to the physical world.

Your Eye Will Expand to Contain the Entire Universe

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

"Speak to your mind as follows. 'O mind! Control yourself and be steady. Do not speak angrily even with those who incite you to anger. Do not give up friendship with the Friend you have accepted, i.e., maintain your love with God. Do not desert your duty.' Perform various duties with your hands and keep your mind with the Abode of Grace (Ram, God)." (The Book of Kahara, a section of the Bijak of Kabir)

"Faith, worth the name, must be living. It must consist in acquiring an affection, or rather an intense love, for the Supreme Being and an intense desire to approach Him; and this latter we can do in the interior of the body, for the highway is within us." (Huzur Maharaj, "Holy Epistles")

"The true Supreme Being is within everyone, and the Path leading to Him is also within all. By means of His rays or currents, He pervades all. Jiva or Surat [the soul, spirit] is a particle of the Supreme Being like a ray and the sun, or a drop and the ocean." (Huzur Maharaj, Prem Patra Radhasoami, Volume III)

Kabir: "In each house (heart) the Light shines. But we are blind [ignorant of that divine Light of knowledge] so we do not see it. If we keep looking we will find the Light and will destroy the shackles of death."

"We have only one consciousness stream. When we associate with truth, we ascend upwards and when we associate with untruth we fall down." (Acharya Tulsi, a Jainst teacher quoted in, "The Harmony of All Religions")

"The Center of 'seeing' or inner focus is known as Ajna Chakra (the third eye). When the mind is focused on it, the divine Light pervades every part of one's being." (Acharya Tulsi, a Jainst teacher quoted in, "The Harmony of All Religions")

"Whoever is unified will be full of Light; whoever is divided is full of darkness." (Yeshua, Gospel of Thomas) "If therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of Light." (Yeshua, Gospel of Matthew)

"Moving down from the middle of the two eyes is going towards ignorance, and moving up from the middle of two eyes is going towards Knowledge." (Bhagirath Baba)

"The beginning of the Turiyaa state has been said to be the Aajnaa-chakra [Third Eye Center] (the Guru instructs about the Point in between the two eyes where the vision of both unites), and the destination of this is in Kaivalya--the State of Oneness." (Bhagirath Baba)

"Meditation is the process of withdrawing the attention from the world outside, and focusing it at the seat of the soul in the body, behind and between the eyebrows. This point is known as the inner eye, third eye, the single eye, shiv netra, tisra til, or the divya chakshu. In order to withdraw our attention and focus it on this point, mind must be controlled and stilled." (Kirpal Singh)

"O traveller! Seek the path that lies within you. You and your Beloved are in the same body. Your Beloved is pervading everywhere, but not being perceived. Those initiated by Guru are able to recognize Him within their bodies. O traveller! If you wish to go alone on the path of the Lord, look for the path within and do not delay. The four spheres of darkness, Light, Sound and Soundlessness [Anadi, Anami] -- they all lie within the temple of your body." - Padavali of Maharshi Mehi

"On finding the central point within, at the Third Eye Center, pursue the path ahead. Opening the portal of the sphere of Light with the yoga of vision, immediately enter the very sphere of Light." - Maharshi Mehi

"One who crosses this layer of darkness through a special kind of meditation sees the inner Light within oneself. This inner Light is called Aatma-Aalok (Light of the Self) or Brahma-Prakash (Divine Light). On achieving this, the Third Eye opens completely. While gazing into the darkness that one sees with eyes closed, one should mentally repeat the guru-instructed mantra [simran]." (Swami Bhagirath Baba)

Look at God within yourself, how "God is Light." For his Nature is a glorious, many-splendored Light. He manifests the Light of his Nature to those who love Him in all the worlds. - John of Dalyatha (Syriac Mystic)

"O Nama, the Lord will make the pupil of your eye His home, and your eye will expand to contain the entire universe." (Sant Namdev)

"The Master has revealed to me the secret, dear friend.

Of a region where exist neither Void, nor breath, nor the Vedas;

Neither the five elements, nor mind, nor body are there;

Nor karmas, nor suffering;

There is no birth in that region, nor is there any death;

There, exist no bondage, no fetters, no chains.

The soul has penetrated into the peak, O friend,

And pierced, like a shaft, a hole in the sky.

Therein she beheld sights wondrous, beyond comprehension."

-- Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras

Satsang: When the Surat-disciple Meets the Shabd-Guru, the Path will be Traversed

Light and Sound on the Path - August 13:

The Path of the Sants: Sant Mat

"He alone is the Adept, the Holy and the Gnostic, who is in rapport with the Divine. Says Namdev, he alone has obtained peace in whom God's Name has taken abode." (Hindi Padavali of Sant Namdev)

Maharshi Mehi has clearly stated that Sant Mat is not a new creed. It is a union of all the Sants (God-realized souls). We respect all the Sants. We study the speeches of all the Saints and remember them, and follow them. If we dive into the opinions of Sants (Saints) like Buddha, Sant Kabir, Guru Nanak, Dadu, Sant Tulsi Das, Sant Paltu, Swami Ramkrishna, Sant Tulsi Sahab, Baba Devi, etc. you will get one and only one way to attain salvation. There will never be a little bit difference among their views on Drishti Yoga (the Yoga of Vision) and Surat-Shabda Yoga (the Yoga of Sound) for self-realization and God-realization. (TheSantMat.com)

"Without the Saints, O Tulsi, we are tossed about endlessly. Without the merciful, compassionate Master, aeon after aeon we rove." (Shabdavali of Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras)

Meditate

The individual soul (jiva), bound by illusion (maya), remains in the cycle of death and birth. This is the cause of one's suffering. In order to escape from this cycle of death and rebirth we must experience realization of the Supreme Being. (Maharshi Mehi, The Principles of Sant Mat)

"The individual soul is an inseparable part of the Supreme Being." (Maharshi Mehi, The Principles of Sant Mat)

Sant Namdev: "Whatever man thinketh, that he obtaineth. If he were to dwell on the Absolute........he would become immortal." (Adi Granth)

Tulsi Sahib said: "When the Surat-disciple meets the Shabd-guru, the path will be traversed."

O Guru ! You let my consciousness ascend the sky.
Kindly let me catch the current of seven melodies that is the Quintessential One,
After allowing me to catch the support of your Radiant Being,
Let me have a glimpse of your highly resplendent Vision.
(Padavali of Maharshi Mehi)

"One who is called the disciple of a True Guru should get up early in the morning and meditate on the Guru's Nam. He should put in efforts to bathe in the Pond of Nectar early in the morning." (Adi Granth)

Surat -- Attention

The term "Surat" means: Attention or individual consciousness, the attention of the Soul, the ability of the Soul to concentrate within, and experience the bliss of inner regions, Self-absorbed intelligent Energy, Spirit.

Surat Shabd Yoga: Surat refers to spirit and Shabd to the Sound Current; hence, it is the union the soul with Shabd; the spiritual exercise by which the Current of Consciousness is applied to the hearing of the Sound within; joining the mind and the Attention to the Sound Current. Surat Shabd Yoga: Union (Yoga) of the Soul (Surat) with the Inner Light and Sound of God (Shabd).

"A human being's attention is the most precious treasure he possesses." (Edward Salim Michael, "The Law of Attention - Nada Yoga and the Way of Inner Vigilance")

Quality of Concentration in Meditation: "Single-pointedness results in absolute concentration, which causes ascension (vertical rise) enabling one to move onto a higher level or stage. This way it would be possible to transcend all illusory sheaths [subtle bodies, astral, causal, etc...]." (Maharshi Mehi Paramahans, The Way of Liberation)

Sant Ravidas [Raidas]: When the soul (surat) mergeth into the Sound (Shabd) and becometh one with it, then one obtaineth the supreme Bliss. The lamp burneth inside, 0 Ravidas, and Divine Bliss ariseth within. Steeped in meditation with one-pointed attention, practice devotion to God, 0 Ravidas. Let the automatic repetition be continued within, Reverberating the True Naam.

"From the Source of the Ocean opens a Window of Light. Awaken that resplendent Light within thee....Repeat the name of the Lord and secure Him." (Shabdavali of Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras)

"Moment by moment gather thy soul and hold it at the Eye Center. Cleanse thou the mirror of thy mind, and catch the Divine Melody with thy soul. If thy longing is keen, thou shalt pierce the veil and attain the Quintessence." (Shabdavali of Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras)

"Within thine own self, behold the splendor of thy Beloved. In the pupil of thine eye is a mole, wherein is hidden the entire mystery. Peep within and behold thou what lieth beyond this dark curtain. The secret of the fourteen realms will, for certain, be disclosed to thee. Let thy attention not slip, see that thou art ever vigilant." (Shabdavali of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras)

"I beheld in the firmament an inverted well, and was filled with resplendence of Light within." (Shabdavali of Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras)

Tulsi Sahib: "The disciple sees within himself the Akash (sky) which is like an inverted well, and merges his Surat [soul's attention] in it."

The glittering point between the two eyebrows is visible, O brothers! Closing your eyelids, try to see. Let the two currents of light converge at the central point of the eyebrows. Fix your gaze and cross your bodily sphere. Enter the egg of the universe. The sky, studded with stars, looks so wonderful. Light, like the earthern lamp, is visible that eliminates the darkness of the closed eyes. The incomparable Moonlight, unique in itself is spread in all corners. And the light of the young Sun also radiates beautifully. Surat, with its spiritual vision, catches the multiple Sounds without being impaired. O individual souls! Catching these Sounds with a Surat-like rope, traverse the final abode, which is the real home. Mehi has revealed this mystery, the Quintessential One. One who serves Guru without any cleverness, has no difficulty in reaching the real home. (Padavali of Maharshi Mehi)

The Quintessential One along with Surat at the final stage disappears. The very stage of Soundlessness, Wordlessness or Namelessness is entirely different. According to Mehi that stage is devoid of dualism. Surat [soul], merging with the Absolute, never returns to the physical world. (Padavali of Maharshi Mehi)

Kabir: I went looking for Him, and lost myself;
The drop merged with the Sea.
Who can find it now?
Looking and looking for Him, I lost myself;
The Sea merged with the drop.
Who can find it now?

"The drop merges in the Ocean and becomes one with IT." (Param Sant Tulsi Sahib)

Sant Mat Quote of the Day:

Satsang Videos of Swami Bhagirath Baba

giving satsang talks at the Maharshi Mehi Ashram

at Kuppaghat, in Bhagalpur, Bihar, India:

http://thesantmat.com/?page_id=55

Swami Bhagirath Baba: "Sants/yogis have fixed times of meditation. Those times are: 1) in the pre-dawn, i.e. three hours before sun rise, 2) after taking a bath during the day [mid day], and 3) during the evening (after the sun sets). Meditation done in these three time is called Trayakaal Sandhyaa (thrice-daily meditation). A practitioner must sit for meditation in these three times, and also should do Maanas Jap (repeating the Guru-instructed mantra), or Maanas Dhyaan (involving mind in visualizing Guru's form inside), while doing worldly work. In the evening just before going to bed, the practitioner should sit in meditation for two to four minutes and then go to sleep. A practitioner can continue Maanas Jap or Maanas Dhyaan or keep his/her vision straight inside with closed eyes laying in bed. This practice protects one from terrible, unpleasant dreams, and on the other hand the practitioner can be benefited with the appearance of sages/sants or Satsang in the dream state. The appearance (seeing) of sants/sages in the dream state is an indication of spiritual-upwardness (progress)."

"This mysterious path is described in the holy books, but it cannot be found simply by the study of sacred texts. It is found by the grace and guidance of an accomplished teacher." (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj)

"Peace comes to this agitated mind. Sorrow has gone, and joy arrives instead to reign. All fears of life and death depart, through the perfect teachings of the Saint. All doubt departs. We live fearlessly, and all afflictions of the mind are resolved." (Adi Granth)

Kabir: "More than all else do I cherish at heart that love which makes me to live a limitless life in this world. It is like the lotus, which lives in the water and blooms in the water: yet the water cannot touch its petals, they open beyond its reach."

"There is no other refuge but Thy Name. By the love of the Name, this form is made beautiful." (Adi Granth)

"Celestial Music is heard in the house that is blessed: In that fortunate home where the Lord's power is manifested, there rings the Melody Divine." (Adi Granth)

My eyes got fixed at the central point between the two eyebrows [third eye center]. The Light of God appears within and darkness of the night vanishes. The Sun, with its extraordinary rays, ascends with so many sparkles. Consciousness finally gets immersed in the Quintessential Word. Baba Sahib tells Mehi to remain absorbed day and night in such applications. (Padavali of Maharshi Mehi)

"Those who enshrine the Beloved in their hearts have both worlds at their command. Lovers remain completely intoxicated in the ecstasy of their love for the Beloved. They offer their souls to the Beloved while still living, and thus immortalize themselves in this life and in the hereafter." (Hazrat Sultan Bahu, Sufi Master)

"Learn the right technique from a Satguru (true teacher, Sant Satguru), walk within yourself, and rid yourself of all the worries, all the stresses, strains, all sorrows by meeting and merging with the Supreme Soul." (Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj)

"Do not live even a single day without inner meditation." (Baba Devi Sahab)
