Sanctuary of the Stones is looking for a Logo for our Newaygo County PAGAN
AWARENESS DAY. Submissions are due by Jan. 6th, 2010.

Here is the criteria:

1. Use of the event name:
     -Newaygo County Pagan Awareness Day

2. A map of the lower penninsula of Michigan, with Newaygo County outlined

3. A variety of Pagan symbols surrounding Newaygo County
    -Should include a pentacle, Thor Hammer, Ankh, and other common symbols that
represent Pagans & Heathens

4. Should be able to work on either a business card or a poster/banner without
looking too "cluttered".

If chosen, your Logo design will become the property of Sanctuary of the Stones,
and be used only for our Pagan Awareness Day here in Newaygo County. You will be
given full credit for designing the Logo on our website. Sorry, but your
signature will not be allowed to be on the Logo.

Again, please make sure your Logo design is submitted to our group prior to Jan.
6th, 2010. We will announce the Logo we choose on our Feb. Council meeting.

Submissions can be either dropped off at HAMMER HORN OAK & THORNE, located
downtown Newaygo, or emailed to me directly in a PDF file.

The case of a Toronto woman accused of fraud has shed light on a section of the
Canadian criminal code that carries a hint of the Dark Ages: posing as a witch.


Vishwantee Persaud allegedly defrauded a Toronto lawyer of tens of thousands of
dollars by telling him she was the embodiment of the spirit of his deceased
sister, come back to help him in business. Ms. Persaud now faces charges under a
rarely used section of the criminal code for pretending to practice witchcraft.


"She said she came from a long line of witches and could do tarot-card
readings," says Detective Constable Corey Jones, who investigated the case. "It
was through this that she cemented [the lawyer's] trust," setting the stage for
the fraud to follow, which, according to Det. Constable Jones, included claiming
fictitious expenses such as law-school tuition and cancer treatments.


Det. Constable Jones says it's rare to charge someone under Section 365, but the
circumstances of this case fit.


"It's a historical quirk," says Alan Young, a professor at Osgoode Hall Law
School. Some sections of the Canadian criminal code reflect offences that were
more prevalent centuries ago.

When the code was enacted in 1892, witchcraft per se was no longer a punishable
offence, he says, but lawmakers wanted to ensure witchcraft wasn't used as a
cover for fraud.


Section 365 states that any one who fraudulently pretends to exercise or to use
any kind of witchcraft, sorcery, or enchantment or who "undertakes, for a
consideration, to tell fortunes … is guilty of an offence punishable on summary
conviction."


"It's not really about occult activity," Prof. Young says. "It's about
defrauding people."


The lawyer met Ms. Persaud, who claimed to be in law school, in early 2009 and
started to mentor her. According to Det. Constable Jones, he probably gave Ms.
Persaud more than $100,000 over the year.


Det. Constable Jones says the scheme came to a head when Ms. Persaud said they
were going to make money hosting and providing security for certain celebrities
at the Toronto International Film Festival. "That's where everything fell apart
because of course no Hollywood celebrities showed up," he says.


In fact, he points out, this kind of offence could lead to a simple charge of
fraud, which carries longer jail terms and stiffer fines. As it stands, a
conviction of pretending to practise witchcraft carries a maximum sentence of
six months in jail and/or a $2,000 fine.


"There are probably more cases than we know of," Det. Constable Jones says. He
says victims are sometimes embarrassed to report such frauds to police.

Ms. Persaud remains in custody and also faces fraud charges relating to this and
other cases. She is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 24.

I've had a few people ask me recently about the 12 Days of Christmas/Yule. 
Following the path that I do it has always been a jumble of beliefs between my
family and I.  Being of European stock many of my family traditions have
followed *some* of the old celebrations and I have with much effort been
researching what the original 12 Days were all about.  So as we proceed through
the next few weeks I will be posting about the 12 days in hopes that some of you
will begin to honor some more of these old traditions or just enjoy some more to
read!

Preparing for the Solstice.

Between now and the 21st a meditation is usually performed to think about the
season and its effects upon yourself and the world around you.
It also is an honoring of the directions:
    Go outside for four consecutive days, each day facing a new direction and
focusing on its particular qualities, gifts and opportunities.  The trick to
this meditation is to attune yourself with the winds that blow.

Following in the next few days.. more meditations thoughts and poetry.

Witch Hunter Sues Humanist Activist in Attempt to Quell Criticism

In May 2009, the Center for Inquiry (CFI) launched an anti-superstition campaign to highlight and combat the abuse of alleged child witches throughout the African continent. Now witch hunter Helen Ukpabio, head of the Liberty Gospel Church in Nigeria and a frequent target of criticism by CFI, has filed a lawsuit in Nigerian federal court against Leo Igwe, CFI’s representative in Nigeria.

The events were set into motion on July 29 when a mob of about 150 members from Ukpabio’s Liberty Gospel Church attacked Igwe and others during a “Child Rights and Witchcraft” event in Calabar, Nigeria. Police finally broke up the mob and arrested one person. Igwe’s bag, phone, camera, and a copy of his planned speech were stolen and his eyeglasses were smashed. 

The complaint filed by Ukpabio essentially alleges religious discrimination on the part of Igwe, who has been a tireless vocal critic of Ukpabio’s claims that many of Nigeria’s children and women are witches. The suit, scheduled for a hearing on December 17, is seeking an injunction to prevent Igwe and other humanist groups from holding seminars or workshops aimed at raising awareness about the dangers associated with the religious belief in witchcraft. Ukpabio is attempting to erect a legal barrier against humanist groups who might criticize her group for their practices. Kinda odd how this is happening at a college in another state, yet TV-8 saw fit to run the article, eh?  Ah well.....goes to show where we live.
