We're finally letting go of Big Blue, our old faithful scuba mobile. This
truck/van has served us immensely over the years and is in perfect shape. If
you're an instructor looking for a mobile shop or a serious diver in need of a
reliable scuba-mobile, here it is. On top of the specs you'll find below, we've
stocked it with pretty much all the leftover scuba bits and pieces from the
shop. 9 al80's, an al63, the big green tent, mad scuba tools,bench tools, orings
galore, etc etc etc.

2005 Mercedes CDI Dodge Sprinter Van:
Currently outfitted as a mobile scuba shop and measuring 225 inches in length
and 140 inches in width with a ground to roof height of 94.7 inches, the van is
large enough to stand up and walk around in and with 321 cubic feet of cargo
space, it not only holds all your equipment plus two people, it is also a fully
outfitted workshop for equipment maintenance and repair.
Powered by a 2.7 liter in-line five cylinder Mercedes-Benz turbo-diesel engine,
the van has every amenity a driver could want: air conditioning, power windows,
reclining cloth bucket seats, rear cooling fan system and much, much more!
The interior cabinetry is custom-designed and built by System Edstrom of Swedish
steel, with locking doors and Hammerite Epoxi Powder Coat finish.
For safety, the van includes a rear-view video camera and backup sensors, and
for security the entire unit is fully alarmed, fitted with a variety of internal
security devices and outfitted with a GPS tracking system. A roof-mounted
Datastorm F1 satellite dish provides wireless high-speed Internet access and
instant global communication anywhere you take it on the planet!
A permanently installed cargo partition with a fixed window separates the
passenger compartment from the cargo and work area, providing security and
privacy for your operation. A 1500-watt inverter delivers 110-volt AC power for
charging lights, cameras and computers, as well as for operating electronic
equipment and power tools.

Hi everyone--
I just wanted to let you all know that the Diving Locker has purchased Old
Yeller and will now be pumping Nitrox... 24 hours a day. (they just don't know
it yet...) If you don't know where the diving locker is, it's about two miles or
so down Balboa heading West from our shop.

No go before the line is too long!!!

I will be teaching my next GUE Fundamentals over 2 weekends in October.

The first weekend will be October 3 and 4 and the second weekend on October 24
and 25.  This is an ideal format as it gives a chance for the principles,
protocols and skills to be introduced the first weekend, then an opportunity to
practice and then finish off the course the final weekend.

I have two divers who have committed to taking a course and we are looking for a
third as the emphasis of the course will be team skills.

If you are interested in this course or a future one, please get in touch in me.

Also I am looking to put together a San Diego based Tech 1 course. I have
completed my Tech 1 interns and need to teach my first Tech 1 course which will
be evaluated by a member of the GUE Training Council.  I have one person
committed to doing the course and we will start working on some informal
training sessions so that skills will be at Tech 1 level prior to the course.

Many people were interested in our Halcyon training gear.  We have decided to
sell the setups individually instead. Each setup includes:

Black and yellow 40lb Eclipse wing

DeepOutdoors is getting ready to start pumping gas. Nitrox, Trimix, Oxygen and
Air will be available to the public starting next month (just waiting on
hyperfilters). We will not offer memberships and fills are on a pay as you go
basis. Right now trimix is running .95 cuft for HE plus a 10 dollar fill charge.
Air fills are $8 a cylinder and nitrox is going to run $15 a cylinder (32%). Our
goal with all of this is not to take over as the primary supplier of gas but to
offer people another option. DeepOutdoors is located at

Depending on demand we may stay open later (8 pm) one or two days a week and we

I am also available to teach the GUE Primer, Dry Suit or Doubles courses as well
as the GUE Recreational 1 Open Water course (10 lectures, 10 pool dives, 10
ocean dives).  All classes require a minimum of 2 students.


The GUE Fundamentals course is designed to provide the recreational diver with
Fundamental skills to enable the diver to be in control in the water and develop
Confident, Competent and Comfortable Divers. Emphasis is placed on team diving.

All skills are done in horizontal trim using good buoyancy skills to remain off
the bottom.
Skills introduced include:
   Maintaining horizontal trim and good buoyancy
   Basic 5
   Shared Air Drill
   Frog Kick
   Modified Frog Kick
   Modified Flutter Kick
   Backward Kick (move backwards using only fins)
   Helicopter Turn (rotate using only fins over the same spot)
   Ascents (ascend vertically w/o a reference w stops every 10 feet)
   Shared Air Ascents (as above but sharing air)
   Ascents with deploy of a Surface Marker Bouy at 30 feet in Blue Water.

Belated Congratulations to Todd Beckman, Spencer Tuck and Klaus Vogel for
completing GUE Fundamentals.

Spencer Tuck also went off to upgrade his Fundamentals Rec Pass to Tec Pass.

Klaus Vogel completed his Fundamentals with me and then heading over to Oahu and
successfully competed GUE Tech 1 with Gideon Liew over a 6 day course which I
interned.

Klaus lives in Germany, but finds it less expensive to fly to San Diego and dive
then to commute to the dive sites in Europe. He will be back in town on August
24.

Todd as many of you know is off to Australia but will rejoin our community later
this year.

Dear Friends,

    April 1st, 2006 marked the first real day of business for SDUA.
Our doors were open, we had inventory to sell, mannequinns were sporting scuba
equipment and the compressor was up and running (loudly!). Barbara Lloyd was our
first actual member. From that day on, our membership base grew and we were on
our way. Word of mouth being our sole advertisement, you informed the community
there was a new cat to contend with, a new breed of dive shop all together.  It
was through you that SDUA really began.

    Over the years, the shop changed. We grew up, we grew out and lots of times
we grew weary, but there was never a lack of opportunity to keep on growing. So
we did. There were membership changes, inventory changes, and shop changes. We
grew to house the best gas fill station in all of Southern Califonia. We took a
slew of classes and we were certiifed in everything under the sun so we could to
keep our brains wrapped securely around what we were selling. We learned more
about scuba in the past three and a half years running SDUA than we could have
in a lifetime of diving.

   We made a point of keeping all of our members close to us because you are our
friends. We know all of your names and lots of your birthdays. We taught you how
to fix your own gear so that you never have to depend on a shop for what you can
do yourselves, and in return, you shared with us your stories and your
knowledge. You showed us your loyalty by refusing to purchase less expensive
items from local competition or over the internet and by doing so, you helped
keep SDUA afloat amid rough seas.

    Over the past six months, however, SDUA has experienced more change than it
has the capacity to endure.  Economic turmoil, staff changes and a decline in
memberships has had a negative impact on our ability to function and thrive in a
profitable state. Sadly, many people have lost their jobs and have had to cancel
memberships; some just aren't out diving as much. These have been rough times,
hard times, and SDUA just cannot keep up without a solid membership base and a
steady stream of new divers.

    We've run advertising and marketing plans, specials, club meetings and sales.
We've turned over our entire staff to find employees who have both a passion for
diving, enthusiasm and business marketing and networking experience. We've run
the gamut on ways to become a profitable company in the midst of an economic
decline. We've put everything we could into SDUA: love, time, money, effort,
people, gas, and service.

    It is very unfortunate then, to have to bear the news that San Diego
Underwater Adventures will be closing our doors effective August 1st, 2009.
We've spent the last few months desperately trying to avoid closing at all
costs, but it is simply impossible to continue operating at such a loss. We
truly apologize for such short notice, but we cannot go on another month is this
way.

   In the next two weeks, we hope you can find time to help us wrap up some loose
ends: many of you have tanks or other equipment at the shop. Please retrieve
these sometime before the first. If you have orders still being shipped in,
we'll call you as soon as the items arrive. We'll be selling off inventory over
the next two weeks at about cost plus ten percent, so any reasonable offer won't
be turned down. Members will no longer be charged and Chip will be finishing up
classes until the first. We refilled our Helium and Oxygen banks Friday and
we'll be filling trimix until that supply runs out. We will also be filling
Nitrox and air until we close. We're currently searching for a buyer for our
fill station, who will in turn be the shop or individual we can refer you to for
further nitrox and trimix fills.

    We sincerely thank each of you from the bottom of our hearts for being there
with us through this whole experience. We've learned so much and made so many
friends. We've laughed our butts off, screamed our heads off and even blew out a
few burst discs. We've fixed things, we've broken things and we've had a lot of
beer together. We've shared night dives and dawn dives, cookouts, rock climbs,
hikes, long runs, ocean swims and lazy Sundays under the big blue tent. We've
even thrown up in the water together. We've shared gear, memories and coffee.
And giant squid attacks. And we've all gone partially deaf from that damn
compressor. All in all, it was a pretty sweet ride. Thank you, thank you, thank
you.

   If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to call us or
drop by the shop to speak with us in person. We'll do everything we can to make
this a smoothe transition for us all.

Again, thank you so much for your patronage, your loyalty, and above all, your
friendships.

Hey guys, I don't know who sends out the notices on these classes you are having
but can't you give us more than a day's notice?  Today is Monday and I just
received a notice for two classes on Tuesday night.  I can't even call the shop
right now because aren't you closed Mondays?  Maybe this will be another course
I won't be able to make.
