Hoping a Browncoat out there can give me some advice -
My brother was interested in the graphic novel or whatever form Book's backstory
was going to take. I haven't heard anything recently about that moving forward.
Does anyone have any info on it or maybe a suggestion for an alternative gift if
the story of Book isn't out there yet? Thanks!

Hey gang!

Just got a call from Jeanine's Mom....her back surgery was today and went
well....we won't be able to actually talk to her till late tonight or
tomorrow....please send lots of prayers and positive thoughts her way! This has
been a LONG time coming, and we don't know how much if any good it will do, but
life has been pretty miserable for the last 3 years, and it was getting worse,
so we are hoping for anything we can get in the way of pain relief.

We will try to give you updates as we get them....

:) Dabee/Deb

Hey kids, how are y'all doing? I'm writing because I'm heading to San
Francisco your way next Thursday (12/10) to Sunday (12/13) and wanna hang
out with as many of y'all as possible! That being said, I have a tentative
schedule of happenings for next week that I'd love for y'all to be a part
of. So far:

Thursday - Nothing, travel day, wanna keep clear at the moment. ^_^

Friday - Friday evening, Nicole Z has generously offered to have a little
shindig at her place starting around 8 PM. This will be more of a general
hanging out sort of thing, but we can also bake some easy-to-make cookies,
I'm told. If you need the address or anything, please ask Nicole or I. ^_^
Nothing planned in the daytime yet, hopefully sightseeing or relaxing.

Saturday - Dickens Fair during the day! I know there's a meetup that day,
but I'm hoping y'all can come to the fair afterwards to hang out. I'm also
hoping to do some kind of dinner that night if any of y'all are
interested. If anyone has ideas or suggestions, lemme know. Arielle has
mentioned some place called Nora's or Noma's or something...

Sunday - Before we drive back I'd like to know if any of y'all would like
to meet for lunch/brunch somewhere. If anyone has ideas or suggestions,
lemme know.

So that's it, so far at least. ^_^ I hope to see a bunch of ya while up
there, and hope y'all are having a great day. See y'all soon. ^_^

2 Gold Weekend Admission Passes to Creation's Salute to Serenity and Firefly

A fellow Browncoat who is unfortunately unable to attend this weekend’s
Serenity Salute convention hosted by Creation Entertainment has generously
donated her Gold Weekend front row tickets to California Browncoats to be
auctioned off for charity. That’s right, you heard it folks, FRONT ROW!
Specifically seats 21 & 22 in Row A.

Serenity and Firefly Salute is this weekend November 21st-22nd at the Marriott
LAX Hotel in Los Angeles and guests include Morena Baccarin, Jewel Staite, Adam
Baldwin, Alan Tudyk and more! The winning bidder will need to provide his/her
own transportation and lodging for the convention and will need to pick the
tickets up in person at the convention on Saturday morning.

The Gold Weekend tickets are “deluxe packages for those that want to enjoy the
entire weekend in the very best way.” Included are autographs, special events,
etc. Check out all the details on the Creation site. These passes originally
sold for $379 each, so bid early, often and high!

A huge thank you to the fan who is turning her loss into a wonderful gesture and
donation for KNTR!

The episode was AWESOME!
I'm so glad that Nathan has a series that he 'fits' into. After Firefly, there
have been so many hits/misses. ..This fits his acting style and keeps us
entertained. As it's now in Season 2, there is hope!

And as for Adam, He's in Season 3 of Chuck, which starts airing after the new
year? (can anyone confirm? I'm going off memory)

I'm happy for the 2 of them. And with Summer Glau adding to Joss's Dollhouse,
(which is in season 2), there is hope for that to continue...she' ll rock the
series...

anyway...it' s WAY past my bedtime...

Hi Sacramento Browncoats: I am allowing this message to post in case anyone
wants to take on the bidding process for the Browncoat Ball...

Best,

Donna/List Owner

************************************************
Fellow Browncoats,

Just a quick and friendly reminder that bids for the 2010 Browncoat Ball ahould
be completed and e-mailed to bid@... (with "BCB Proposal" in the
subject line) by Oct. 31st.

The BCB Committee will review the proposals and announce a final decision by
Nov. 15th.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Tequila Matt

(Bid Guidelines follow)

The Inaugural Browncoat Ball (BCB) was held in Chicago in 2004, with the goal of
establishing an affordable, annual, nonprofit event created for fans by fans,
capable of bringing Browncoats from geographically diverse locations from all
over the world together to celebrate Firefly, Serenity and our fabulous fandom.
The BCB has been held in San Francisco (2006), Philadelphia (2007) and Austin
(2008), and it will be held in Portland in 2009.
Hosting the BCB is a labor of love. While the central BCB Committee will share
planning materials and tips and offer assistance in the fundraising and
promotional process, the 2010 hosts should respect the fact that it is hard work
to host a successful BCB, but it is extremely rewarding.
Since the BCB is a small event and cannot sustain comping volunteers, a guiding
principal of the BCB since its inception is that everyone pays their own way
(attendance, lodging, airfare): committee members, volunteers and attendees
alike. This way, the attendees do not subsidize the volunteers or committee
members.
Applications for hosting the 2010 BCB should be completed and e-mailed to
bid@... (with "BCB Proposal" in the subject line) by Oct. 31st.
The BCB Committee will review the proposals and announce a final decision by
Nov. 15th.

Serious applicants should send a proposal with the following information:
1. A statement from your group about why you would like to host the 2010 BCB.
2. Proposed dates for the event (a nonholiday weekend in August, September or
October 2010).
3. Proposed location, including the city and, if possible, a specific hotel that
would have reasonable rates and at least 20-25 rooms available for the proposed
dates. (This doesn't have to be the final location, and multiple sites can be
proposed if that is preferred)
4. Estimate on the total cost of a ballroom/banquet facility that has
availability during the proposed dates, including room rental and catering.
Financial details for previous BCBs are available for reference.
5. A list of 3-5 additional Firefly/Serenity 'verse-themed activities that could
be done at or near the BCB site and an estimate and explanation of the costs
associated with these activities (for example, transportation to and from the
event, admission fees, food charges, decoration costs). All activities and
related transportation costs should be included in the BCB ticket price.
Think creatively! Some of the best activities cost very little, can be tied in
easily with the Firefly 'verse and don't require a ton of planning. For example,
the 2004 BCB included a Chinese Welcome Dinner and Tea Ceremony on the rooftop
of the hotel, the Train Job Luncheon on a privately chartered commuter train and
an Afternoon in the Core with suggested activities around Chicago. Additional
details from past BCBs are available on request. The sky is the limit! This can
be more of a brainstorming list of possible activities rather than a final list.
6. Additional transportation details such as how far the BCB site is from a
major national/international airport, what transportation options exist to and
from the airport and how much they cost, and how far the site is from other
major cities within driving distance. Please take into consideration the
availability of accessible options for Browncoats with disabilities for all
aspects of the event.
7. Total estimate on the operational costs (not including lodging and airfare)
and estimate of ticket cost (we suggest between $100 and $150), including
possible options for different event packages.
8. Coordinating Committee: A tentative list of 5-10 people willing to:
• Make facility reservations and coordinate event planning
• Register guests
• Promote the event, including Internet updates, newsletters and invitations
• Be the Webmaster for the 2010 Web site. (If no Webmaster is available, the
BCB Committee can maintain the Web site, but the 2010 hosts must be willing to
provide/edit/review the text for the web site.) There is a forum, as well as
MySpace, Facebook and Yahoo! BCB groups, that the hosts can use to promote the
2010 BCB.
• Handle incoming and outgoing money and create and work within a budget
(treasurer). This is extremely important, as the 2010 hosting committee will
bear the financial responsibility if the event goes over the budget. The BCB
Committee will provide financial summaries of the prior events to the 2010 hosts
to give you an idea of what you can look forward to with regards to expenses,
although the cost of the event will vary depending on the location. You are then
required to provide a similar financial report to reflect how your event was
managed, so future events can benefit as well.
• You can propose to host a BCB in an area other than where you live, but at
least two 2010 coordinating committee members should live/work near the site
being proposed.
• Committee members must be willing to commit to approximately 3 or 4
conference calls or conference chat sessions with the BCB Committee so all
parties can be sure things are still on track and to discuss any major changes,
if any.
9. Contact information, including name, e-mail address and evening phone number
for one member of the coordinating committee who will serve as a contact for
notification purposes. (The BCB Committee will in turn provide the 2010 hosts
with contact info for consultation purposes.)

Last night's episode of Castle was hilarious.
While author Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion) was trying to decide on his attire,
he slipped into some familiar "space cowboy" duds, those of Captain Malcolm
Reynolds from Joss Whedon's Firefly.
His daughter (Molly C. Quinn) asks, "What are you supposed to be?" He says, "A
space cowboy". She says, "Didn't you wear that, like, five years ago?... So,
don't you think you should move on?"
"I like it!," he defends.

I agree, it was "Shiny!" I like that they also threw in a Buffy reference when
they found the dead body in the beginning! And they called his party a
"shindig". Too bad he didn't try on a Captain Hammer costume too!

The 4th Annual Browncoat Day at Disneyland will be Saturday October 24th. As
usual the Browncoats will be descending on the happiest place on earth for a day
of fun. We aren’t going to change the plan much from previous years, so here
are the details.

9:00-9:30 AM - Meet at the fountain in front of La Brea Bakery (end of Downtown
Disney near the Disneyland entrance)
10:00 AM - Group picture in front of the ‘F’ of the giant “California”
between Disneyland and California Adventure
2:30 PM - Group picture in front of the castle
6:30 PM - Dinner at Pizza Port in Tomorrowland, Scavenger Hunt winners
determined

We are once again doing a scavenger hunt. If you wish to participate, you will
need a digital camera (or cellphone with a camera). The hunt instructions and
clues will be handed out at the initial meetup and the first group picture.
Teams for the hunt should be at least 2 people. The last couple years it has
taken much longer for everyone to get to the meeting in the morning, so give
yourself extra time to get there.

Last year the Pizza Port was a success, so we will be meeting for dinner there
again this year. It has an outside area that we managed to secure for our large
group.

For those who want to do the hunt, but don’t have a team yet, there will be
teams forming or needing members the day of the hunt. Feel free to form your
teams on the board in the next few weeks as well. The hunt is meant to give
Disneyland a little something extra, and is not mandatory. It’s a lot of fun
though, is Browncoat themed, and everyone who participates will get a prize.
And you all know how those last place prizes go :)

If you have any questions, please post or email them. If you need my cell
number in case you run late or need to find us after the morning meeting, please
send me an email.

We’ll see you there!

James

2010 BROWNCOAT BALL CALL FOR BIDS

(If no Webmaster is available, the
BCB
Committee can maintain the Web site, but the 2010 hosts must be willing to
provide/edit/review the text for the web site.) There is a forum, as well as
MySpace, Facebook and Yahoo!
• Committee members must be willing to commit to approximately 3 or 4
conference
calls or conference chat sessions with the BCB Committee so all parties can be
sure things are still on track and to discuss any major changes, if any.
9. Contact information, including name, e-mail address and evening phone number
for one member of the coordinating committee who will serve as a contact for
notification purposes. (The BCB Committee will in turn provide the 2010 hosts
with contact info for consultation purposes.)

(Please re-post and forward as you think appropriate.)

Since I haven't seen this posted yet, I thought I should send out a reminder
about this weekend's SiliCon convention in San Jose.

Shawna Trpcic (costume designer for Dollhouse, Dr Horrible, Angel, etc) will be
there, hosting a panel Saturday and Sunday at 10am, introducing the Dr Horrible
screening friday night at 8pm, and acting as a judge at the masquerade Saturday
night. Rumor is she's dragging a bunch of costumes up with her for show and
tell, too!

If you haven't met her yet, you should come to the con and say hi. She's also
accepting questions on Twitter @trpcic which she'll answer at the panel (and
post online after, I think).

As our exhibit is nearly complete (I have learnt that in sci-fi, men don't wear

If anyone out there is able to help with my promo thing on Sept. 30th (during

Museum, 1020 O Street, Sacramento, CA 95814.  This exhibition of costumes from
Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Terminator, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica - and
many more of the most popular films and television shows of all time - shows how
costumes play a crucial role in defining characters for visual storytelling in
media.

Also, for those of you who are BofA bank members, there's Museums On Us,
sponsored by Bank of America, which provides free admission on the first weekend
of every month.  One free admission will be granted to visitors who present a
valid Bank of America check or credit card and their photo ID.
