All,

Took an evening cruise through the mangrove lined channels North of the Port Charlotte Beach Complex on Thursday evening. Before dusk I had Prairie Warblers singing (presumably on territory) and up to 6 Clapper Rails calling. A Cooper's Hawk about took my head off at dusk zipping between my head and the top of my furled bimini (could feel the wind as it passed!) Then a bit after 7:30 heard my FOS Chuck-will's-widow singing from beyond the mangrove forests. It was a lovely evening.

Hi All,

We camped at Hillsborough River State Park and kayaked down the river on the 27th of Feb. Just around the first bend in the river (about 300 yards down from the boat launch for the camp ground) I had a Red-eyed type vireo (REVI) singing (recorded in the background of my daughter's brief kayaking video). I knew it was early for REVI but didn't bother calling it in. if you're in the area it might be worth checking out, though it has probably moved on. There is a trail that goes right along the river. Had a great visit there with lots of Limpkin, large flocks (25+ per flock) of typical Florida winter warblers and Northern Waterthrush. A nice end to a lovely FL vacation from the bitter cold of MA (it was 55 in Boston while we were away).

Quick thought: I didn't see this bird and don't know the likelihood of Yellow-green this time of year... hadn't considered it while I was there on the river.

I'll be in the Everglades in April and am looking into a guided boat tour. Seems
there are quite a few out there. Can anyone recommend a good tour? Preferably
one that won't break the bank. Obviously good birding is a must but am
interested in other wildlife as well.

Thanks for your help!

Hey birders, I'm passing this on from my friends in VA, any help would
be appreciated!! They also were unable to post on SW FL birdboard or

thank you!

NEWS RELEASE FROM THE CENTER FOR CONSERVATION BIOLOGY

Become an Osprey Watcher: Connect with a global community of
observers

The Center for Conservation Biology has launched Project OspreyWatch,
a project created to engage a global community to collect data on
breeding osprey. Linked by an interest in osprey and a concern for the
health of the aquatic environments on which they rely, this community
will for the first time provide a global perspective on this charismatic
species. The mission of Project OspreyWatch is to bring citizen
scientists together in order to collect information on a large enough
spatial scale to be useful in addressing three of the most pressing
issues facing aquatic ecosystems including global climate change,
depletion of fish stocks, and environmental contaminants.

Osprey are one of very few truly global sentinels for aquatic health.
They feed almost exclusively on live fish throughout their entire life
cycle. They are a top consumer within aquatic ecosystems and are very
sensitive to both overfishing and environmental contaminants. Nearly
all populations breed in the northern latitudes and winter in the
southern latitudes, effectively linking the aquatic health of the
hemispheres. Their breeding season in the north is highly seasonal
making them an effective barometer of climate change.

OspreyWatch is a user-friendly, internet platform that allows observers
across the globe to map their nests, log observations, upload photos,
and interact within an observer forum. Information entered into the
platform will be immediately accessible to users and will be
summarized following the breeding season. To join a growing
community of global citizens, please visit http://www.osprey-watch.org
and become an OspreyWatcher.

The Center for Conservation Biology is a research group shared by the
College of William and Mary and the Virginia Commonwealth
University. Our primary focus is to conduct research that solves
conservation problems.

Harn’s Marsh, in Lee County, has become known to for its easily viewable snail
kites and limpkin which at times are there in abundance. Here is what has been
seen there in the past three days:

Ring-necked Duck
Wild Turkey
Pied-billed Grebe

Anhinga
American Bittern
Least Bittern

Black-and-White Warbler
Northern Parula
Palm Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Pine Warbler
Savannah Sparrow
Swamp Sparrow
Grasshopper Sparrow
Northern Cardinal
Red-winged Blackbird
Boat-tailed Grackle

Getting there: Located in Lehigh Acres. From I-75, take Exit 136 and head east
on Colonial Blvd which will become Lee Blvd. At Sunshine Blvd, turn left and
head north. As you drive this road, look on the telephone poles and wires for
snail kites. Turn left on Olive, and then turn left on 38th. Continue to the
marsh.

There are no restrooms and no signage because it’s primary purpose is to filter
water and eliminate or reduce flooding downstream along the Orange River. Cars
must be left outside the facility’s gate even if open.

You have two choices: Walk north past the iron gate and along the sandy
impoundment road to reach the formal marsh. Or, walk south through the
chain-link pedestrian gate, and along the obvious path to reach the woods and
the south canal area which can also have excellent birds. North and south can
be done as a loop which encircles the marsh and covers 4 miles.

Hello Collier County Shorebird Stewards and Friends,

With the coming spring, our beach-nesting shorebirds and seabirds are making their returns to beaches in the area.  We will be mobilizing our Lee and Collier Shorebird Stewardship Program for the third year to help lend vitally needed protection for these imperiled creatures.

To that end, and for your own enjoyment, the combined Lee and Collier Shorebird Stewardship Programs are offering a unique Shorebird/Seabird ID Training on Saturday, March 31, 2012 from 8am – 3:30pm.  It is being taught by three local leaders in coastal waterbird biology and identification:

Marianne Korosy, Important Bird Area Coordinator for Audubon Florida

Keith Laakkonen, Environmental Specialist (Biologist) for the Town of Fort Myers Beach

Charlie Ewell, Lee County Bird Patrol Coordinator and area naturalist

The session is geared for beginning to intermediate skill levels, and will include both classroom and beach work.  Lunch is provided as part of the $20 fee, which also supports the Stewardship Programs.  You should bring your binoculars (and spotting scope, if you have one).  Please see the attached flyer, and I ask that you RSVP to Marianne Korosy (mkorosy@...) before March 29.  This is a great opportunity which I highly recommend, and it should be lots of fun – hope to see you there!

Wes Dierks and I watched a least bittern in the cattails yesterday, St Patricks
day, at Lakes Park. I have not been to the park in several years and was
impressed by the greatly improved habitat there since the hurricane and
consequent removal of the Australian pines and thus the relandscaping with many
native plants. There is a lot of bulldozer activity at the far end of the park
(one of the best birding areas according to Wes) but they are putting in new
filtration marshes for cleaner water in the lakes and on into the gulf. I guess
we can't complain about that. The park employees we talked to said that the
dirty water comes from Lehigh Acres and Ft Myers and then flows(hopefully
cleaned) into Hendry Creek. Julie Long, Sanibel and ST Charles, Il

Sue Moore and I went by Vince's house after the morning at the lighthouse and
saw all three species of buntings! I have posted photos. I am so sorry the
lazuli (male nonbreeding) isn't clearer, but I was afraid to move closer. I
posted them even though they are fuzzy because I think you can see the colors
pretty well. (btw, I only cropped, I didn't brighten/darken, etc.) There is a
brownish female in a couple of the photos. I don't think it is the female
painted, even though it is sitting with the male painted in one photo. I can't
tell whether it is the indigo or the lazuli female. Dotty M.

All,

While out boating in Charlotte Harbor out of Port Charlotte yesterday evening I had my FOS Common Nighthawk, Least Terns have built to significant numbers (15 detected), heard as many as 6 Chuck-will's-Widows last night (counted 2x that number in the same areas last week), heard 5 Clapper Rails under the mangroves, plus still have lingering Kingfishers about. There seemed to be significant movement of waterfowl last evening spotting two teal flocks of 50 birds or so and continuous strings of scaup. Greater Yellowlegs, Spotted Sandpiper, and a Solitary Sandpiper were heard/seen winging by/over.

Had scads of dolphins, Cow-nosed Rays are displaying and breeding and it seems sharks are in the harbor as well. A school of large fish busted out of the channel as we were motoring in after dark that appeared to be Tarpon as well! It was a fun evening.

There have been very few migrants at the lighthouse these last few days, though
I cannot complain about a Ky, prothonotary, or N. Parula which I have seen
lately. There may still be a hooded warbler still hanging around too. Some
waxwings, red eyed vireo, a few chimney swifts and barn swallows have also been
spotted. There are many birders walking the "trails", so if the birds are there
it seems likely that someone might see them. I leave for Illinois next Tues so
my bird list will probably be more limited this year than other years. Julie

Charlie Ewell, Jose Padilla and I are birding Ding Darling in between rain showers. We've had Swainson's and Gray-cheeked thrushes on the road, literally, and Eastern pewee, Dickcissel, and Bank swallow. Some warblers were flying over. Next stop, Sanibel Lighthouse!

From about 9:30am to 10:30am Sunday morning, my wife, son and I saw along Wildlife Drive several pair of Indigo Bunting, two male Baltimore Orioles, two Spotted Sandpiper and a very odd looking thrush, with quite gray face and hindquarters.  Earlier that morning, at our home about a half mile south of Ding Darling, we had a male Painted Bunting in one of our tomato bushes and, from the sound, a mate in nearby trees.  Both Yellow-Crowned and Black-Crowned Night Heron's at the edge of our small pond when we returned from Ding.
