Hello, I'm starting to add more SP&S locomotives to my roster and need to know
what phase the GP9's where and what number boards are used for the RS-2's and
RS-3's, as well as the class lights. For the first FA1's, who makes the nose
number board.

Eric Torrence.

I believe the GP's were Phase I, 'cause that would explain why I have a couple
of non-dynamic undecs in my closet. It's been a long time since I worked this
one out, so my supporting evidence is unavailable. I'll note, though, that the
GP9 was introduced in 1954, and the SP&S GP's were delivered in 1956, so it
kinda fits.

Actually, you don't need a detail part. LL P2K's 1st FA-1 release came with the
side-number board. The 1st FA-1 engines from Alco for the SP&S had the
side-number boards, AND were non-dynamic equipped. None of these engines made it
into the "Broad Stripe" scheme, as they were retired prior to the adoption of
the latest scheme. These engines are out there, might want to see if Ebay can
supply you with one. Later runs came with the angled number boards.

The SP&S diesels in color shows that the 850-855 have a nose number board. How
do I add that number board?

Paul Hobbs has recently completed his latest book: "SP&S Locomotive
Diagrams". The book includes diagrams of all of the SP&S's steam engines
and diesels as well as OE electric locos and is 80 pages long. As with his
past diagram books, Paul has laboriously taken every original diagram and
digitally cleaned and restored it to "like new" condition. The books are
available from his US distributor: Vintage Ads - North America. All books
are spiral bound so that they layout flat during use. Payment can be by
PayPal or check/money order.

Still available are Paul's previous books:

SP&S Locomotive Diagram Book $24.95

SP&S Caboose Diagram Book $24.95

SP&S Passenger Diagram Book $29.95

SP&S Freight Car Diagram CD (paper book is out of print) $15.00

Shipping for 1 to 5 items is $5.00 in the US. (Non-US shipping will be
individually calculated at actual cost.)

Mail checks to:

Vintage Ads

Or email me at prints@... with your desire and I'll send you a
PayPal invoice.

I'd glue it on. That out of the way, you're going to have to fabricate one--an
easy task, I think. Page 1 of Schwenk's book has an excellent photo for the
purpose. I think the trick will be coming up with the right decals (typeface
and size) for the numbers, though maybe they're lurking on a Microscale sheet
somewhere.

Eric,

Check out this message thread, 7198. Put that number in the "message" area and
you should find some helpful info. I have actually asked the same questions and
done lots of research and gathered lots of books and photos. Basically you'll
need a P2k GP9 PhII with "Torpedo tubes" Non-dynamic brake for the first 4 units
150 - 153 which were equipped with steam generators, initially used in passenger
service. For #154
and 155 you need P2k GP9 Ph II non-dynamic brake unit Proto #23764.
A cheaper version would be to use Athearn or Front Range shells if you can find
them. I don't know if Rail power made any GP9's. George
Hardy had one for sale at the convention with the torpedo tube and it looked
great! Needless to say, It was sold rather quickly. If you'd like more info on
detail parts contact me off line. I have lots of info regarding the GP9's.

Hi,

So I was snooping around and discovered a youtube recording
of a C-415 on the Burlington Junction Ry. The loco is in
operation (ex-CN?) but only ever handles 1 or 2 cars. So
has any one who was there and did that listened to this video
and can say ... "Yup, that's how they sounded." ... ?

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F_hycPj-8uI

The obvious followup question is "what sound decoder has
the best/closest representation of this 'beast'? And then -
"I have one of the Overland HO models ... has anyone put
sound in one yet?". (If yes, please contact me off list.)

   Thanks!

An awesome video. The unit is ex SP, see the light packages. Interesting to
note they wired the upper Gyralight to come on directionally in this
movement anyway, clear one way red to the rear.

I think that was one of the units that ran tourist trains on the Port of
Tillamook Bay (one of Bob Steele's ventures) and then it went briefly to
the Mt. Hood RR.

Hi,

OK, so that video is 'correct' for a C-415. So I'll ask
again ...
what sound decoder are you using for this?
                                                          - Jim

P.S. I've heard a goose decoder that sounded a lot like this one
does - 'at idle/slow' ... but not 'at speed' (of course).

Hi Dave,

I think what people are missing is that You are talking
about Paul's earlier hardback book
"Spokane, Portland and Seattle Ry. Cabooses, A History" published in
1996 by Great Northern
Pacific Publications.

I don't have good current pricing information; I was lucky
to find one in 2006 for $40.00,
when any other copies I could find were going for $60.00 at the time.
I haven't really been looking,
but I haven't seen one come up for sale recently, I'm afraid.

Good luck in Your search! It's a dandy book, of course. All
of Paul's works are.

Best Regards,
Mark Huffstutter

Thanks Mark, you are correct concerning what I was asking for and the responses
I was getting. Thanks very much for the info and clarification. I had one
response off-line and from that and your comments I would gather that $60 seems
to be what the market price would be now. The reason I was asking was that I am
a part time dealer of railroad books, doing most of my business at flea
markets/shows in Ohio and Michigan, and found a few mint copies of that book
which got buried as the sales tapered off some years ago.

Thanks again for your response

Hey guys, I have one too many cabooses. Help me out and take this off my hands.

The end of the Overland box says: GN 30' wood caboose, #X198, X200-X228,
X230-X249 w/swing motion trucks, unpainted. OMI 3954.

What that means to us SP&S guys is that it is an SP&S #850-855.
There are a couple of great photos of these in Austin's freight car book.

The model is in mint condition, no tarnish and only been out of it's box a
couple of times. It is the latest run of this caboose, and a very nice model.
It has see-thru steps and full brake rigging. I think it was imported in Oct.
1997.

I'm asking $175.00 shipping included. Please contact me off-list if interested.
If I still have it on Saturday I'm going to give the GN and BN guys a shot at
it.

Thanks, Tom Bacarella
