Title: WCC - Message of the presidents of the WCC at Pentecost
2002

World Council of Churches
Press Release, PR-02-15
For Immediate Use
16 April 2002

Message of the presidents of the WCC at Pentecost 2002

"Suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the
rush of a violent wind...." (Acts 2:2; NRSV)

Holy Scripture depicts in simple language the event of the first
Pentecost in the life of Christ's Church: "After his suffering
Jesus presented himself alive to the apostles by many convincing
proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about
the kingdom of God. While staying with them, he ordered them not
to leave Jerusalem, but to wait there for the promise of the
Father" (Acts 1:4).

The apostles, together with Mary the mother of Jesus and the
other women, were gathered with one accord devoting themselves
continuously to prayer (cf. Acts 1:14). The journey from
Ascension to Pentecost is a period full of expectation, hope and
faith. This reflects the mystery every human soul experiences as
we await the coming of the Paraclete, the outpouring of the Holy
Spirit, that great day of personal Pentecost when a human being,
through the church and in the church, suddenly becomes the
"temple of God" and the "temple of the Holy Spirit" (1 Cor 3:16;
16:19). The world, too, through the church and in the church,
suddenly becomes the place where the kingdom of God is revealed
"on earth as it is in heaven" (Mt 6:10).

The Paraclete, or Counsellor, is present in the church and in
the world. The Counsellor's presence is ever experienced as it
was by the disciples during the first Pentecost, when
"...suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a
violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were
sitting" (Acts 2:1-4).

"Like the rush of a violent wind"! It is obvious that this
phenomenon was not "violent" in the sense of being evil, as
violence is experienced in its usual forms. Normally, unexpected
violence enters our lives in the most destructive ways: through
brutality, terrorism, oppression of conscience, physical violence
against young children, criminal passions, wars, cruelty,
transgression of moral and social values, the humiliation of
human being, dignity and personality, and all other
manifestations of evil.

"Like the rush of a violent wind"! During these years that the
World Council of Churches is observing the Decade to Overcome
Violence, we are considering and coming better to understand what
the presence of the Holy Spirit means in our lives. The "violent
rush" of the Holy Spirit's coming differs fundamentally from the
brutally aggressive irruption of violence and terrorism in the
world. The sudden rush of the Spirit strikes witnesses as
violent, yet it does not violate consciences and lives. It is
violent, yet it is neither crude nor destructive. It is violent,
yet it honours the image of God in human beings. It is violent in
the sense that it contains God's Spirit, a Spirit that imparts
enthusiasm and uplifts us, communicating joy and courage,
offering ever new perspectives and strength. Indeed, the Holy
Spirit inspires hope, faith and love: especially love for God and
for our fellow human beings, a love that "casts out fear" (1 John
4:18).

Only the Paraclete's violent rush can overcome the brutal
irruption of evil and violence in our lives and world.

"Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying
to the churches" (Rev 2:7, 11, 29; 3:6, 13, 22).

WCC presidents:

Dr Agnes Abuom, Nairobi, Kenya
Rev. Kathryn K. Bannister, Bison, KS, United States of America
Bishop Jabez L.Bryce, Suva, Fiji
H.E. Dr Chrysostomos, Metropolitan of the Senior See of Ephesus,
Istanbul, Turkey
H.H. Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Damascus, Syria
Dr Kang Moon-Kyu, Seoul, Korea
Bishop Federico J. Pagura, Rosario, Argentina
Bishop Eberhardt Renz, Stuttgart, Germany

The tradition of the Pentecost message from the presidents of
the World Council of Churches (WCC) dates back to 1950. The
message is a joint effort of the eight WCC presidents who
represent the different regions within the WCC constituency. The
first draft of this year's Pentecost message was provided by His
Eminence Metropolitan Chrysostomos of Ephesus. "In this world of
violence, we remember the Holy Spirit which came upon the
apostles as 'a violent breath' and as fire, but brought peace to
the world", says Metropolitan Chrysostomos.

NEW YORK, April 16 /U.S. Newswire/ -- A delegation of prominent U.S. Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican church leaders will visit the Middle East April 16-27. Planned for several months, the trip is "all the more urgent" given the deepening crisis, said the delegation's leader, the Rev. Dr. Bob Edgar, General Secretary of the National Council of Churches.

The NCC - whose 36 member denominations comprise 50 million adherents - organized the visit by invitation of the Middle East Council of Churches and Jerusalem church leaders. Co-leader with Dr. Edgar, a United Methodist, is Elenie Huszagh, a Greek Orthodox layperson from Nehalem, Ore.

Acknowledging the security concerns, the delegation nevertheless intends to fulfill as much of its planned itinerary as possible. "We intend to meet with our Christian partners in both Israel and Palestine," Dr. Edgar said.

"We go to offer pastoral support for Christians in the Holy Land; seek ways churches in the U.S. and Holy Land can promote a just and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians; encourage Christians, Jews and Muslims working for peace, and bring our ecumenical witness to U.S., Israeli and Palestinian political leaders," he said.

The group will meet with clergy in each country and expects to meet with several high-level political officials, including Syrian President Bashar Al Assad and Lebanon's Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri --- who will have just returned from Washington, D.C. The delegation also intends to meet with Israeli and Palestinian government officials and with the U.S. Consul General in Jerusalem, and hopes to visit Israeli and Palestinian wounded and bereaved.

The group's first full day (April 18) will be spent in Istanbul with Armenian and Syrian Orthodox church leaders and with His All Holiness Bartholomew, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople, spiritual leader of more than 250 million Orthodox Christians worldwide. The group is to go on to Beirut (April 19-20), Syria (April 21-22) and Jordan (April 23), then spend April 24-27 in Israel/Palestine.

Delegation members are: Rev. Janet Arbesman, Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), Scottsdale, Ariz.; Bishop Vicken Aykazian, Diocese of the Armenian Church, Washington, D.C.; Mark Byron Brown, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Washington, D.C.; Dr. Edgar; Rev. Dr. James A. Forbes, Jr., Senior Minister, The Riverside Church, New York City; Rev. Subject: How many Oriental Orthodox in the USA?

http://www.hirr.hartsem.edu/research/quick_question17.html

This web page has the best information available on numbers in the various
jurisdictions in America. "Best information" usually means best guesses,
but this research will be used as a benchmark for years to come. It seems
to me that the Oriental churches may be under-reported. The Ethiopian and
Eritrean did not even make the list. How many Coptic Orthodox would be a
fair estimate since they have the most parishes (unless you combine the
Armenians)?

The table conversion is:
parishes - full members - adherents

After the 15 jurisdictions of Eastern Orthodox in the USA!

16. Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East
18 - N/a - 36,016 (I believe these are under Rome and are not considered
Orthodox, yet they are listed)

17. Armenian Church of America
89 - 11,400 - 45,800

18. Armenian Apostolic Church of America
38 - 11,100 - 23,200

19. Archdiocese of North America of Coptic Orthodox Church
116 - N/a - N/d

20. Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch
23 - N/d - 15,100

21. Malankara Archdiocese of the Syrian Orthodox Church
22 - N/a - 4,340

22. American diocese of Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church
59 - N/a - 13,300 (does not include mission parishes)

The feast day of St. George is widely celebrated on April 23 by most
Christian denominations (Oxford Dictionary of Christian Churches,
1997). Syriac Orthodox calendars also have the same date. Even in
Malankara, many churches celebrate the feast day on April 23rd as I
could reckon from recent editions of dailies published there. One
possibility (for which I have no evidence) is that the original date
which could have become known in India according to the Greek or
Julian calendars was converted to the date in the month of Medam on
the Malayalam calendar (which starts in AD 825) and now results in a
discrepancy with the date on the Gregorian calendar.

the reason of this date difference?

321st Dhukhrono of Mor Gregorious Of Jerusalem

27th April 2002

St.Gregorious Abdul’Galeel,  the Syrian Orthodox Metropolitan of Jerusalem diocese who came to India in AD.1665, on the request of the Malankara Church to reinstate the Holy Apostolic faith in Malankara,  is remembered by the Malankara Syrian Christian community with great veneration.  It was his untiring efforts that helped the Malankara Church to overcome one of its most difficult periods.

On 9th April 2000,  the spiritual supreme of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church, Patriarch of Antioch & all the East 'His Holiness Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas', through an historical bull, permitted to recite the Quqalya hymns and prayers of the Zadeeqo (saints) at the tomb of Mor GregoriusAbdel`Galeel Bava and Mor Osthathious Sleebo (Arthat Simhasana Church, Kunnakulam) and beseech their intercession.

For the proper understanding of the events that led to the arrival of Mor Gregorious in Malankara, a brief history of the Malankara Church of the 17th centaury, is included in this page.   Also a special emphasize is given on, the life histories of 'MarThoma I' (the first native Metropolitan of the Syrian Church) & Anjilimottil Itty Thommen Kathanar who led the Malankara church in that difficult era of religious persecutions,  and  the historic 'Koonan Kurishu Oath'  of AD 1653.

The Post included an ikon of St.Gregorious Abdul’Galeel, which shows his staff that looks like a snakes head, I have a question why a snake?  I have never seen something like that before and I am wondering the symbolism of it.  Thank you.

Nilus,

Bishops in the Syriac Orthodox tradition hold staffs which have snakes on them
for two reasons:

1) The serpent is a symbol of wisdom. "Be wise as serpents and harmless as
doves."

2) It is also an allusion to the serpent Moses lifted up in the wilderness,
that whomever looked upon it would be healed.

Meditate Upon Scriptures and the Teachings of the Saints to Purify the Mind

From the teachings of Martyrius in: "The Syriac Fathers on Prayer and the Spiritual Life," Sebastian Brock, Cistercian Publications:

53. Truly great and mighty is the power of God's word. For the word of God has changed the offspring of vipers into children of God. So let us constantly sow it within the hard soil of our heart, waiting for it to soften it so that the wheat-ear of life may sprout up in it. For the word of God is at the same time the seed and the water; and even though we have a heart like stone, it will be softened and split up by the water of the Spirit, so that it can bring forth holy
fruit that is pleasing to God.

54. Therefore let no one neglect meditation of the divine words or the labor of reading the appointed measure. As our honored teacher said, from such meditation the soul acquires great benefit and finds salvation. Furthermore, we please God by this occupation, and our
mouths are cleansed of both abuse and of shameful and frivolous talk, seeing that we are constantly meditating on the holy words. We also become objects of fear for the demons as we arm our tongues with these words. Above all, we bring close to ourselves the grace of the
Spirit, and the Eye of our soul is made to shine by the understanding we receive from him. This is why God gave us eyes, mouth and hearing, so that all our limbs might be filled with service of him, as we recount his words, carry our his wishes, continuously sing his praises and ceaselessly offer up to him thanksgiving. By these means we shall purify our minds.

Contemplation Leads to Visions of the Divine Light

Syrian Orthodox prayers:

Open to us, Lord, your great door, 0 Fountain of all mercy, hear our prayer and have mercy on our souls, Lord of the morning and ruler of all seasons, hear our prayer and have mercy on our souls. Shine upon me, Lord, and I shall be Light like the day; I will sing your praise in Light while I marvel; may the morning awaken me to the praise of your Godhead and I will pursue the study of your word all the day long. With the day may your Light shine on our thoughts and may it drive away the shadows of error from our souls. The creation is full of Light, give Light also to our hearts that they may praise you with the day and the night.

Rise up, 0 Children of Light, and let us give glory to the Lord who alone can save our souls. 0 Lord, as you withdraw sleep from the eyes of our body, grant us wakefulness of mind so that we may stand before you in awe and sing your praises worthily.

Prayer of St. Augustine:

I entered even into my inward self. Thou being my Guide and able as I was: for Thou were become my helper. And I entered and beheld with the Eye of my soul (such as it was), above the same eye of my soul above my mind, the Light Unchangeable. Not this ordinary light
which all flesh may look upon, nor as it were a greater of the same kind, as though the brightness of this should be manifold brighter, and with its greatness take up all space. Not such was the Light but other, yea, far other from all these.... He that knows the Truth,
knows what that Light is and he that knows It, knows Eternity.

St. Basil:

Absolutely unutterable and indescribable are the lightning-like splendors of Divine beauty; neither can speech express nor hearing apprehend. Shall we name the brilliance of the morning star, the brightness of the moon, the radiance of the sun? The glory of all these is unworthy of being compared with the true Light, standing farther from it than does the gloomiest night and the most terrible darkness from midday brightness. This beauty, invisible to bodily eyes, comprehensible to soul and mind only, if it illumines some of the saints, leaves in them an unbearable wound through their desire that this vision of Divine beauty should extend over an eternity of life.

Dear beloved,

Blessing in the name of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ.

Please let me share with you what I have read today:

“Even though we have the right to rebuke the one who has wronged us, we must do this not in passion for having been wronged, but in the hope of correcting a brother, according to the precept of our Lord.”

Saint Basil

"رغم أن لنا الحق في أن نـُوبخ الذي يعتدي علينا، لكن يجب أن نـَفعل هذا ليس بدافع الغضب نتيجة أننا ظـُلِمْنَا، ولكن لأننا نرجو أن نـُصلح أخاً بحسب ما نَعرف عن ربنا".

القديس باسيليوس الكبير

Pray for me as I pray for you all.

Fr. Antonious Henein

I did not seem to find the source for the Syriac text, and this is the first time I hear of Grant R. Jeffrey's "discovery". I think is is unlikely Ephrem. Even the Syriac work's in Beck's scholarly edition of Ephrem which deal with the end of the world and the after world are actually attributed to Ephrem and belong to a later date.

The link below is to a site that says that St Ephraim taught a pre tribulation rapture.  I am wondering does anyone here know about it and the context of it?

Thank you, Dr Kiraz, It didn't ring true that St Ephrem wrote it, but I had no way of knowing.  I knew this group would know, if St Ephrem had written it or not.  Thanks again.

Prayers of the Mystics, Part One

Praised are you 0 Christ our Teacher, for you enrich with absolutely everything those who cleave to you. Lord, if someone gives his possessions to the state, then he receives in return great honour; how much more will you, Lord, magnify and praise that person who offers his whole self to you, possessing nothing besides you!

Make our souls grow by your grace, Lord, so that we may grow in you and give praise to you, for no one can grow except in you, and no one can excel except in you.

Praise to you, without whom everything is empty; praise to you, for apart from the praise of you, all praise is but idle. Praise to you, the One who magnifies, but it is you who are thereby praised, for you are the object of praise of everything. Praise to you, Perfecter of everything, 0 Christ. By your divine teaching you gave wisdom to all who are instructed by you to deprive themselves of everything that belongs to this world -- then they shall be attached to you. Otherwise, as they traveled after you while still cleaving to the world, they might be drawn back by the world into it. Praise to you who bade us release ourselves and then cleave to you, seeing that, when we are not bound up with anything, nothing will separate us from
you.

Prayers of the Mystics, Part Three

Direct the course of our lives, Lord,
straight towards you,
so that in you we may reach you,
and so that in you we may find you.
Make us worthy to attain to you,
in you;
and let us behold nothing beside you.
Hide everything from our mind's vision
by means of the manifestation of your glorious Light.
For whoever gazes upon you
does not need to look upon anything else;
but whoever does not gaze upon you
is in need of all kinds of other sources of illumination
in order to be able to see.

Praise to you
for you are the Light,
and in you our souls have illumination.
You illumine all
with knowledge of yourself
Draw back the veil of falsehood from our souls
so that we can see your Light clearly,
for our minds are not totally dark
owing to love of you.

Spiritual Life," translated from the original Syriac-Aramaic by

Prayers of the Mystics, Part Four

Praise to you, 0 Christ the true Light, for in you have our souls been illumined so that we have gained perception in our minds. In you we have been made worthy of you, in you we have found our lives, and in you we have been acquired by you.

Praise to you, for in you we have been conjoined to you, and in you your glorious Father has taken pleasure in us; in you we have peace with him.

Praises be to you who gave us life in everything. Thanks be to you, 0 Lord of all, for you are true and immutable life, in whom our treasure will be preserved and not snatched away: our wealth will no longer be seized. Our life is provided for by your care, and all kinds of wonderful assistance from you is proffered to us. It is by these means that you captivate humanity to the love of you, so that all may acquire you and you may acquire everyone. Praise to you who proclaimed and taught that we were to be acquired by you in love.

All praise to you, 0 God, who are hidden from all worlds; all praise to your love, for no one is able to recount its abundance. For your greatness bends down so that it may be seen by those who love you, so that human beings may behold the sight of you: this is the exalted
position to which you have brought them, actually manifesting yourself to them. How ardent and fervent is your love for the soul which has become aware of you, for the soul which is truly purified and cleansed during her lifetime. That person whom you have held full worthy to look upon you is raised up towards you in his lifetime: but for his body, he would no longer be in the world!

Prayers of the Mystics, Part Five

What wonders has your love effected! When someone is still alive he has left this world: though his bodily condition remains with the world's bodily condition, yet his spirit has been raised up towards you, so that for a period of time he is where he knows not, being totally raptured and drawn towards you.

All praise to your knowledge, all praise to your greatness; thanksgiving be to you, 0 Lord of all, who established your wisdom for us in wonder. All this does your love bring about, transporting us from this world to another world in order to perfect us fully there, allowing us to grasp there things of which we are unaware here; for many are the things which you have in store for us, Lord, things of which we do not yet even know so as to ask for them. Just as there are many things of which a child is unaware in this world and so does not know to seek for them, similarly your grace has prepared for us in the New World things for which our minds have not yet conceived of seeking from you or asking, but which are hidden away in readiness for that day when they shall be revealed to everyone according to his capability: the more a person has loved you, the more you will manifest the wondrous sight of you. Not that
you refuse to manifest yourself here, only that here this takes place by means of the revelation of mysteries, whereas at the end of time it will be by means of the glorious vision of you. Not everyone will behold you there equally, but each in accordance with his capability. For not even the ranks of angels all have the same vision of you in that world there, but the degree of their vision depends on the greatness of their rank.

All praise to you, who bend down in all sorts of different manners, while remaining exactly as you are. You are seen by everyone in so far as they are able to see you.

I beseech you, 0 God, Father of all, cause our minds to approach this glory, so that we may perceive in our understanding and become aware of the greatness to which you have called us, and of how insignificant we are.

Grant us, Lord, to cling to you, not in our outward beings but in our hidden selves, and may we follow you until we behold your face. For in this world, Lord, a person continues to follow after you as he becomes perfected, but in the New World you will manifest your very face to him: then he will no longer be traveling after you, but will be with you in the Kingdom.

Dear SORForum members,

I have read that the Syrian Orthodox Church has decided to change its name
to Syriac Orthodox Church in a Holy Synod in 2000. Is that right?

Maybe somebody of you has more infos about that.

Best wishes,
A. Cerina

Prayers of the Mystics, Part Six

As my soul bows to the ground I offer to you with all my bones and with all my heart the worship that befits you, 0 glorious God who dwells in ineffable silence. You have built for my renewal a tabernacle of love on earth where it is your good pleasure to rest, a temple made of flesh and fashioned with the most holy sanctuary oil. Then you filled it with your holy presence so that worship might be fulfilled in it, indicating the worship of the eternal persons of your Trinity and revealing to the worlds which you had created in your grace an ineffable mystery, a power which cannot be felt or grasped by any part of your creation that has come into being. In wonder at it angelic beings are submerged in silence, awed at the dark cloud of this eternal mystery and at the flood of glory which issues from within this source of wonder, for it receives worship in the sphere of silence from every intelligence that has been sanctified and made worthy of you.

Antonio,

The name was changed in the English language so as not to be misunderstood with the country presently called Syria.  If I'm not mistaken, the name remains the same in most other languages.

Prayers of the Mystics, Part Seven

I beseeh You, O God, send me help from your highest heavens so that I may keep afar from my heart every evil intention and every carnal wish.

Do not cast me, Lord, from your protection lest my adversary find me.

0 name of Jesus, key to all gifts, open up for me the great door to your treasurehouse so that I may enter and praise you with the praise that comes from the heart in return for your mercies which I have experienced in latter days; for you came and renewed me with an
awareness of the New World.

I give praise to your holy nature, Lord, for you have made my nature a sanctuary for your hiddenness and a tabernacle for your Mysteries, a place where you can dwell, and a holy temple for your divinity.

0 Mystery exalted beyond every word and beyond silence, who became human in order to renew us by means of voluntary union with the flesh, reveal to me the path by which I may be raised up to your mysteries, traveling along a course that is clear and tranquil, free from the concerns of this world. Gather my mind into the silence of prayer, so that all my wandering thoughts may be silenced within me during that luminous converse of supplication and mystery-filled wonder.

Please let me share with you what I have read today:

“The path of fasting leads to the path of purity. Fasting is the cutting off of lust and evil thoughts, the purity of prayer, the illumination of the soul, the guarding of the mind, the deliverance from hardness of heart, the door to contrition.”

Saint John of the Ladder
