Reading: From the Gospel according to St. Matthew 16: 13-23.

Dear and Respected Brethren,

Koodos Etho is the first day of the worship Calendar of a year. As everyone
knows, it is the day for the sanctification of the Holy Church. Our surprise
will increase more and more when we would think how wisely and meaningfully our
Church Fathers have arranged the Church Calendar. As God Almighty is holy
without a drop of dirt or filth, God desires that all the faithful who are set
apart for the abide ness in God are to be made free from all sorts of drawbacks
so that they could stay in the holiness and divine cleanliness. Our Church
Fathers have separated a day for the sanctification of the entire members of the
Church by considering this desire of God. We all are obliged to realize that it
is our responsibility to co-operate with the Holy Church in sanctification
process. The sanctification of the Holy Church means the sanctification of all
her members together. The Church cannot persuade a member by force, advice or by
inspiration for the transformation of the mind of an individual. The Church
could provide all possible helps for the individuals or group of members for the
necessary arrangement of the possibilities of sanctification. The real desire
and instigation for the sanctification must originate from the individuals.

When our Lord reached Caesarea with the blessed Apostles, our Lord asked the
disciples: “Whom do men say that I the Son of man am?” All of them gave the
answers as they had heard from the people. We read about the same question and
similar answers in St. Mark 8:27 and St. Luke 9:18. Kindly read Daniel and 7:13
and see the comparison of the Son of Man. After listening the answers based on
the opinion of others, our Lord asked “But whom you say that I am”. When all
were surprised, St. Peter came forward and said his answer bravely, “You are the
Christ, the Son of the living God”. Immediately our Lord said “my Father who is
heaven has revealed this great truth to you”. (Verse 17) As God Almighty
selected St. Peter to confess this great truth and faith, St. Peter is honored
by the Church from that moment and grants primacy to him. The blessing of God is
the greatness of St. Peter. One Church which remains still on the shores of
Galilee Sea is named “Primacy of St. Peter”.

We must note our Lord’s phrase “my Father who is in heaven”. Our Lord uses the
term “Son of Man” about himself all along the gospels and uses “My Father in
Heaven” emphatically. We all will have to take this verse as a reply to the ones
who might question our Lord’s Godliness and the theory of the Holy Trinity
namely the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. In 1 Corinthians 2:10 St. Paul tells
us “God has revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searches all
things, yea, the deep things of God”. St. Paul, who had no direct contact with
Lord Jesus when our Lord was on earth, explains Galatians 1:16-17, how he got
great information and wisdom about Lord Jesus. We read, “To reveal his son to
me, that I might preach him among the heathen: immediately I conferred not with
flesh and blood, Neither I went to Jerusalem to them which were Apostles, before
me, but I went into Arabia, and returned again unto Damascus”. This is the
reason for granting importance and reverence to St. Paul in the Church. St. Paul
is honored as the leader of Apostles along with St. Peter. St. Paul was also
blessed by God Almighty to learn the greatness of God and His begotten Son. That
is the uniqueness of the greatness of St. Peter and St. Paul. Both of them were
blessed in the similar way. So the Holy Church grants reverence and honor to
them both.

Today our Lord is asking you and me, ‘who I am for you.’ What answer we could
give spontaneously? Kindly think and find out the answer. As our blessed father
St. Thomas retorted, could we confess “Lord you are our God and Lord.” Let us
pray earnestly for a rare blessing to utter in high voice that Lord Jesus is our
Lord and God. Let us prepare ourselves to call Him our Lord and God, by looking
at His blessed face, watching through our spiritual eyes.

May God bless us all.
Jose Kurian Puliyeril.

Dear Brothers and Sister in Christ,

I would like to express my humble feelings about some of the recent photos I saw
in SOCM & SOCMNet. I am rather delighted to see Bishops from Malankara visit
Ethnic Syrian and Middle Eastern congregations. One of the often used slogans of
the certain MOSC fanatics is that Ethnic Middle Easterners took down upon
Bishops and Priests from Malankara. As to incite that they believe their (Ethnic
Syrian) ordination is superior to Malankara Clergies ordination. Many times they
spread stories about how the Catholicos is an unknown ambiguous position, given
to Malankara as some sort of Syriac Charity. Yet, take one look at the multiple
sites that have Bishops from Malankara visiting Damascus, Europe, etc. Their
faces express the truth. They look at Malankara Bishops as equal Spiritual
Fathers. I was moved when I was looking at photos from the Holy Patriarch's
Enthronement Jubilee Celebration in Damascus, When the Blessed Catholicos came
there. The love and respect the Holy Fathers showed each other. The utmost
respect the people showered upon the Blessed Catholicos and the Bishops from
Malankara will easily expose the truth behind such MOSC propaganda. The recent
photos from the Memorial of the Syrian Bishop that Passed away, where the
Blessed Catholicos was the Chief Celebrant. The people showed great respect and
love towards the Blessed Catholicos. It did not seem that the Catholicos was an
unknown dignitary. These events are true works of a Universal Church. I believe
this is the way Christ pictured the Holy Church, where nationality is not
important, but rather as members of Christ's Body. I firmly hope people will
begin to realize that the solution to lasting Peace in India is through HH
Patriarch.

Your servant in Christ,

I agree..but what saddens me is that it was many of these syriac/assyrian groups
who were firmly behind Mr. Bush to invade Iraq. Now Iraq has been invaded and
what is the fate of the christians there? It is worser than under Saddam.

Where are these assyrian groups now? Why don't they go to Mr. Bush and ask him
to help. He will not help them as they were only pawns in a great game.

Anyway, the past is past. What can be done is to drum up support from
legislators in the US, parts of Europe and India wherever populations of syrian
christians is high and force them to represent to the Iraqi govt. that the
safety of Iraqi minority groups is of paramount importance.

That's about all that can be done now. And about a 'free zone' fro christians
in Iraq, forget it! The whole muslim world will rise in a jehad against the west
then. America with it's current problems will not even dream of it.

The best possible solution...Lebanon is the last refuge of our community in the
Middle East. Why doesn't the church encourage Iraqi christians to emigrate to
Lebanon(and not only to Syria, as being done now). This will help shore up our
number in Lebanon and the muslims will have no any problems about it too as it
is an intra-arab migration after all similar, to the palestinian muslim influx
into beirut after they were kicked out of Jordan by Hussein.

The assyrian christians should think logically and not live in a fools world.
Iraq is forever lost to us. Let us salvage whatever little we have.

Shomo Amokh,

I am the one who wrote once regarding our congregation in Baroda. I
do not agree to your first paragraph, but certainly agree to the
fact that our church heads are not really concerned about the growth
of the church everywhere and are confined to certain geographical
areas only. This is not the case with IOC. Their bishops and clergy
are dedicated to keep the flocks together. They have the budget to
build institutes and churches where ever they want but our poor
people cannot afford the cost their own. We must request our Holy
Synod to fix the budget and plan for the churches and establishments
wherever our people live.

Shalom here from Brazil

I must say that I'm a bit confused about the verbal system.

how many tenses are there? Present, Past, Future, etc.?
how many stem variations are there? Qal, Piel, Pual, etc.?

I would appreciate an exemplification, e.g. a verb conjugated in all
those tenses.

Subject: The tradition of St. Thomas Christians questioned
Thomas Jacob

The tradition of St. Thomas Christians that the Apostle St. Thomas
established the Church in India has been questioned. Every St. Thomas Christian
should pray for the Pope, that God give him good sense.

God St. Thomas the Apostle of India or of Pakistan?

Author: Fr George Nedungatt S.J

“Thomas first evangelized Syria and Persia and then penetrated as far as western
India from where Christianity reached also south India” – Said Pope Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict XVI has recently spoken of the Apostle Thomas during a series of
Wednesday catechesis on the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ. He had started the
series with St. Peter on 7 June 2006. He spoke of St. Thomas the Apostle on
Wednesday 27 September, seemingly taking away from him the traditional title
Apostle of India. Though the pope did not actually use the expression “Apostle
of Pakistan,” what he said may seem to imply it. This matter must surely be of
interest to Christians in India, especially the Thomaschristians who
traditionally venerate St. Thomas as their father in faith.

1. Pope Benedict on St Thomas the Apostle

Pope Benedict may seem to distance himself from his predecessors, especially
Pope John Paul II, who on several occasions has referred to St. Thomas as the
Apostle of India. According to Pope Benedict XVI, however, the area St. Thomas
evangelized was not south India, but what he called “western India,”
corresponding roughly to Pakistan today. Addressing a vast crowd gathered in St.
Peter’s square, the pope first sketched the New Testament figure of Thomas as
the daring disciple, ready to go and die with the Master and made the explicit
profession of faith in the risen Christ as Lord and God. And then the pope went
on to add:

In his name were then written the Acts and the Gospel of Thomas, both apocryphal
but still important for the study of Christian origins. Let us recall finally
that, according to an ancient tradition, Thomas first evangelized Syria and
Persia (thus states already Origen, as cited by Eusebius of Caesarea, Hist.
Eccl. 3, 1) and then penetrated as far as western India (cf. Acts of Thomas 12
and 17ss), from where Christianity reached also south India. (1)

For a clearer understanding of this catechetical teaching of the pope, it may be
helpful to articulate the following five points he made.

1) Pope Benedict recognizes that the Acts of Thomas (ATh), though an
apocryphal work, is “important for the study of Christian origins.”

2) The pope cites the ATh in support of his statement that the Apostle Thomas
evangelized “western India.”

3) By “western India” what is meant is northwestern India of former times, or
IndoParthia, the realm of King Gundaphar of the first century A.D.

4) The pope clearly distinguishes between the evangelization of “western India”
and that of south India: whereas the Apostle Thomas himself brought the gospel
to western India, he did not “penetrate” beyond to south India or Malabar.

5) Finally, it was from western India that “Christianity reached also south
India.”

Thus, according to Pope Benedict, while northwestern India was evangelized by
St. Thomas, south India was not evangelized by him. He does not specify who
first preached the gospel in south India: whether some disciple or disciples of
the Apostle himself or others in the postapostolic age or later. As the pope
sees it, south India was not evangelized by St. Thomas but by Christians coming
from northwestern India, seemingly at a later period. The Thomas christians of
south India, both Catholic and others, are not likely to be thankful for this
papal statement. This is a clear departure from the pronouncements of his
predecessors.

2. Former Popes on St. Thomas as the Apostle of India Several popes have
asserted the origin of south Indian Christianity from the Apostle Thomas. For
example, Pope Paul V in 1606 erected the diocese of San Thome of Mylapore
“because there lay buried the body of St. Thomas.”

Establishing the hierarchy of the Latin Church in India in 1886, Pope Leo XIII
referred to India as having first received the light of the gospel from the
Apostle Thomas. On the occasion of the centenary celebrations in honour of St.
Thomas the Apostle and of St. Francis Xavier, Pope Pius XII declared in his
radio message on 31 December 1952 as follows:

Nineteen hundred years have passed since the Apostle [Thomas] came to India and
in word and deed and utter selfsacrifice bore witness to Christ in your land. …
The Christian community formed by the Apostle conserved intact the legacy he
left them…. This Apostolic lineage, beloved sons and daughters, is the proud
privilege of many among you who glory in the name of Thomas Christians, and We
are happy on this occasion to acknowledge and bear witness to it. (2)

In 1986, during his apostolic visit to India, Pope John Paul II made it a point
to visit the Mylapore tomb and in a brief discourse, in which he cited the words
of the Apostle Thomas to his companions, “Let us also go and die with him” (Jn
11: 16), the globetrotting pope said:

According to tradition, at this very place, which is now called Saint Thomas
Mount, the great Apostle of India fulfilled his own exhortation. Out of love for
Jesus, here in Madras, Saint Thomas died for Christ. He gave his life as a
martyr for the sake of Christ and the gospel.(3)

Again, in his discourse to the bishops of the SyroMalabar Church and the
SyroMalankara Church on 25 August 1990, on the occasion of their ad limina
visit, Pope John Paul II said: “Truly it may be said that, through you, your
father in the faith, Thomas, meets Peter and exchanges with him the ‘holy kiss’
(2 Cor 13: 12), so as to be comforted and confirmed in the service of the
gospel.” (4) In the same year, raising the SyroMalabar Church as a Major
Archiepiscopal Church, he wrote that this Church “as the constant tradition
holds, owed its origin to the preaching of the Apostle St. Thomas.” (5) And
later in his apostolic exhortation Ecclesia in Asia, published on 6 November
1999 from New Delhi, Pope John Paul II spoke in particular of Churches founded
in south India by the Apostle Thomas.

From Jerusalem the Church spread to Antioch, to Rome, and beyond. It reached
Ethiopia in the south, Scythia in the north, and India in the east, where
tradition has it that Saint Thomas the Apostle went in the year 52 A.D. and
founded Churches in South India.(6) Finally, and beyond statements of primarily
local interest, Pope John Paul II wrote in his apostolic letter Tertio millennio
adveniente, addressed to the whole Church in view of the Great Jubilee Year
2000, as follows:

As far as Asia is concerned, the Jubilee will remind us of the Apostle Thomas,
who, according to tradition, brought the proclamation of the gospel at the very
beginning of the Christian era to India.(7)

After all these clear statements of his predecessors about St. Thomas being the
Apostle of India, the recent pronouncement of Benedict XVI may sound like
striking a dissonant note. It may be ungainly to pit one pope against another,
but his position needs to be understood properly.

3. Understanding Pope Benedict XVI

Pope Benedict seems to have stepped on unfamiliar ground. First of all, for his
statement that “Thomas first evangelized Syria and Persia” let us look at the
authority of Origen whom he cites. Actually Origen does not mention either Syria
or Persia but Parthia.

The holy Apostles and disciples of our Saviour were dispersed throughout the
inhabited world. For, as tradition has it, Thomas got Parthia by lot, Andrew
Scythia, and John Asia, who stayed on for some time in Ephesus and died there.
As for Peter, he preached in Pontus, Galatia, Bithynia ….(…was crucified in
Rome, where Paul also was martyred under Nero). This is what is related word for
word in the third volume of Origen’s exegetical Commentary on Genesis.”(8)

Origen’s work on Genesis has not survived. Instead, what we have is a citation
of Origen by the church historian Eusebius of Caesarea. Origen himself is citing
a tradition that the Apostle Thomas got Parthia by lot.

Pope Benedict makes out from this that the Apostle evangelized “Syria and
Persia.” This is not quite exact. The Parthian Empire included modern Iran and
Iraq (ancient “Persia”) but not Syria. Moreover, what Origen says about Parthia
is the same as what the ATh narrates about the Apostle Thomas converting the
King Gundaphar of India, that is, of IndoParthia or northwestern India. Hence it
is a doubleton to state “and then penetrated as far as western India” and cite
as source “Acts of Thomas 12 and 17ss.”

Finally, the Pope makes no attempt to cite any authority for his final statement
that it was from northwest India that Christianity reached south India. This is
quite surprising, since he was so careful to cite sources in support of his
previous statements about the evangelization of “Persia” and “west India.” As a
matter of fact there is no known, extant, ancient text or tradition that
explicitly or implicitly supports the evangelization of south India by
Christians coming from northwest India. Certain savants who deny
the evangelization of India by the Apostle Thomas have put forward the theory
that it was missionaries coming from the Edessan Church or the Persian Church
that first preached the gospel in India. But the evangelization of south India
by north Indian Christianity is a new theory.

Here, Pope Benedict not only ignores the Indian tradition about the
evangelization of south India by the Apostle Thomas, and sets aside the clear
and repeated statements of his predecessors supporting this tradition.

In short, he denies the apostolic origin of the churches of the Thomaschristians
by excluding the Apostle Thomas from the evangelization of south India.

From a methodological standpoint, it is odd that on the one hand Pope Benedict
attributes much historical value to the apocryphal Acts of Thomas, while on the
other hand he ignores that the same work also probably hints at the
evangelization of south India by the Apostle Thomas: the Apostle leaves the
realm of Gundaphar in India to go to another realm. Benedict seems to be
aligning himself with the majority of the German savants as well as other
western scholars today, who do not think that the Apostle Thomas evangelized
India. That is a larger issue, which will be addressed in a forthcoming book of
mine, of which this article is an extract.

4. Conclusion

According to Church magisterium at least since Galileo, papal teaching is said
to be authoritative in matters of faith and morals, but not outside it in the
areas of science, astronomy or history unrelated to the core mission of the
Church. This mission is to proclaim the good news and to teach all nations
whatever Jesus has commanded. This mission is realized and expressed in the
pastoral charge of the bishops and in a unique manner in the authority of the
popes. Popes can be and have been also theologians, canonists, historians, etc.

For example, a predecessor and namesake of the present Pope, namely Benedict
XIV, was a great canonist, Prospero Lambertini, who wrote the monumental work De
Servorum Dei Beatificatione et Canonizatione published after he was elected
Pope. Pope Benedict XIV’s authority as canonist in the area of the beatification
and canonization of the Servants of God is of the highest order, comparable to
that of St. Thomas Aquinas in western theology. That is, not his authority as
Pope but as canonist.

Pope Benedict XVI has the reputation of being a great theologian, but this is
not the same as competence in church history. The Catholic faithful should
distinguish the authority value of papal pronouncements or of Vatican documents
that are pastoral or administrative in nature but not magisterial.

The negative stand of Pope Benedict XVI does not erode the merit of the Indian
tradition about St. Thomas as the Apostle of India, including south India.
Indeed, according to this tradition, St. Thomas is the Apostle of India in as
much as he evangelized south India. According to Pope Benedict, it was “western
India” that the Apostle evangelized, today Pakistan.

In support of the apostolic origins of Christianity in India certain Indian
writers cite the statements of politicians like the Presidents of the Republic
of India, whether Dr. Rajendra Prasad or Sankar Dayal Sharma, made on the
occasion of some particular Christian celebrations. For example, President
Rajendra Prasad stated: “St. Thomas came to India, when many of the countries
of Europe had not yet become Christian…. And it is a matter of pride to us that
it so happened.” India has also issued a postal stamp of the Apostle Thomas,
thus claiming him as her own.

When the authority of Popes is invoked in favour of the Indian apostolate of St.
Thomas, it is important to be clear about its precise value. We may mention here
a precedent. With his bull Deus Omnipotens (1884) Pope Leo XIII confirmed the
apostolic origin of Santiago da Campostella in Spain and exhorted the faithful
to resume the tradition of pilgrimage to the holy tomb of the Apostle James. But
this papal bull has not served to swing scholarly opinion, which is against the
apostolic credentials of Santiago da Campostella.

Pontifical or presidential pronouncements or postal initiatives can have some
pastoral or political value; but they do not necessarily contribute to the
historical argument. When a papal statement is cited in favour of the Indian
apostolate of St. Thomas, it is not to be given undue value, as if it were
historical evidence, certainly not as if it were a dogmatic definition.

The same applies also to a papal statement in favour of the opposite thesis.

In this light may be read the latest papal pronouncement on St. Thomas the
Apostle.

"For though some would nave deceived me according to the flesh, yet the Spirit,
as being from God, is not deceived. For it knows both whence it comes and
whither it goes, and detects the secrets [of the heart]. For, when I was among
you, I cried, I spoke with a loud voice: Give heed to the bishop, and to the
presbytery and deacons. Now, some suspected me of having spoken thus, as knowing
beforehand the division caused by some among you. But He is my witness, for
whose sake I am in bonds, that I got no intelligence from any man. But the
Spirit proclaimed these words: Do nothing without the bishop; keep your bodies
as the temples of God; love unity; avoid divisions; be the followers of Jesus
Christ, even as He is of His Father."

Dear brother in Christ,

What you said is very correct. The church should allot funds and plan for
building churches and institutions out side Kerala where ever our faithful
people leave. The dedication and restless services offered by the clergy and
bishops of other communities are so commendable where as the commitment to the
community is not much seen in our people. This is because our people
particularly the young generation are not made to understand the history,
orthodoxy and holy sacrements of our church. As we see the present turmoil in
Northern Dioceses are created by the priests and few bishops who do not have any
commitment to the church and community. When our people will go and attend the
services at another church can you find a person from another community
attending the services in our church ? No. because they love to be the members
of their community only.

With my little knowledge I can tell you that we have a students organisation
SOCSMI but do not know how many units of it are functioning.

Let us hope for the best and pray for the well being of our church.

In his love

Dear Sarun,

Previous posts have dealt with similar situations where our members depend upon
and go to IOC or other denominational churches. This is understandable where
only a handfull of members are present. However from your post there appears to
be a sizeable number of our brothers and sisters in your area. You should get
together and start at least a congregation first and then call upon the church
hierarchy to support you. Many of the well established churches have started off
as just a congregation of few people. You could make St. Peter's Simhasana
Church, Trivandrum as a case study for this.

What troubles me more is your statement "We in our church also should start a
student's organisation like mgocsm of IOC.So that the student community outside
kerala will get benefitted". I'm not aware of the present situation but 25 years
ago our church did have an MGSOCSM with similar objectives to MGOCSM though not
as financially strong or with fixed assets, but there was a strong student
membership and many activities. I had been fortunate to be a member, work and
serve in that organisation in several posts at church and diocese levels.
Therefore it is surprising that you have not heard of it. My job has taken me
far away from Kerala's shores and MGSOCSM is not active in my place of
residence. Has MGSOCSM become defunct? As a student the best thing you could do
is to start a unit of MGSOCSM in Devengere, if it still exists!

Best Regards

MGOCSM has thier own land and church. I came to know that they spent around 8
lakhs to buy the land and build the church. Our church also should do something
to the student community outside kerala......... Many members of these churches
are Jacobites only. They dont have any other option. So they go to these
churches.

We in our church also should start a student's organisation like mgocsm of

Respected Forum Members,

I do agree cent percent with dear Sarun Mani and his sincere request
must be honoured within the earliest possible time frame. With
utmost loyalty to the Holy Church and with due respect, I pray to
our church fathers to extend spiritual guidance to those folks like
Sarun in the areas where we do not have parishes. It is
absolutely 'the' NEED OF THE HOUR. See, this is about the spiritual
thirst of our younger generation that should lead the Holy Church of
tomorrow.

This reminds us a very recent discussion on this Forum with regard
to the topic "Any Of Our Churches In Singapore" that resumed with a
message from Jeena Manoj.

In the meantime I would urge Mr.Sarun to be in touch with our dear
Metropolitans, H.G.Thomas Mor Themotheos, H.G.Geevarghese Mor
Policarpose, H.G.Pathrose Mor Osthatheos or H.G.Markose Mor
Christostomos who are our Shepherds for the areas outside Kerala.
You can avail their contacting info. by clicking
www.syriscchristianity.org/ and go to the Primates of the Universal
Syriac Orthodox Church.

Let us keep the subject in our thoughts and prayers.

"I therefore did what belonged to me, as a man devoted to unity. For where there
is division and wrath, God doth not dwell. To all them that repent, the Lord
grants forgiveness, if they turn in penitence to the unity of God, and to
communion with the bishop. I trust [as to you] in the grace of Jesus Christ, who
shall free you from every bond. And I exhort you to do nothing out of strife,
but according to the doctrine of Christ. When I heard some saying, If I do not
find it in the ancient Scriptures, I will not believe the Gospel; on my saying
to them, It is written, they answered me, That remains to be proved. But to me
Jesus Christ is in the place of all that is ancient: His cross, and death, and
resurrection, and the faith which is by Him, are undefiled monuments of
antiquity; by which I desire, through your prayers, to be justified."

Bobby Kuriakose brings up a great point as we look towards the future of
ourchurch. Our youth desire to be educated not so much about political battles
but how to know Christ 'orthodoxically', meaning the Christ given to us in the
Gospels and 'traditioned' to us from our fathers.

There are many versions of Christ that exist. This is obvious. Our church
holds on to the teaching of Christ but, unfortunately, we don't wholeheartedly
practice it. Our youth, especially in the US, are attracted to the other
denominations because they see Christ more evident in these churches. Granted,
this is a varying version of Christ filled with immediate satisfaction. It's a
version of Christ that preaches forgiveness without much mention of judgment.
It's a Christ seen at the Resurrection but not the Cross, etc.

Our church needs to play a greater role in educating our youngsters. I pray that
the online course planned by socm-net will happen soon. Let our parents also
take initiatives to encourage our youth to attend bible studies and if none
exist, to start one.

I personally know youths who speak of feeling spiritually empty because our
church meets for Sunday only. After attending bible studies that speak of our
church & its rich traditions and beliefs, they desire to learn more. We have to
re-focus or re-orient our way of thinking, especially our leaders, both clergy &
laity, so that they have more time to be with our youth instead of
administrative and political matters.

Small steps can mean large leaps for our church. It can't be done alone; we
need each other.

God Bless,
George Aramath

"It is evident that just as words of concern alone do not help a naked or hungry
person if food or clothing is not provided, so faith observed in name only does
not save, for it is dead in itself if it is not made alive by works of charity,
by which it may be made to come to life. Nor it that contrary to this statement
which the Lord uttered, 'He who believes and is baptized will be saved,' for it
must be understood there that only he truly believes who carries out in deed
what he believes. And because faith and charity cannot be separated from one
another - as Paul bears witness by saying, and 'faith which works through love'
- appropriately the apostle John brings forward a statement about charity akin
to James' about faith, saying, 'Anyone who has the world's substance and sees
his brother in need and closes his heart against him, how does the charity of
God remain in him.'"

The Venerable Bede.

Matthew,

The original text of the New Testament was most likely written in Koine Greek,
the vernacular dialect in 1st-century Roman provinces of the Eastern
Mediterranean, and has since been widely translated into other languages, most
notably, Latin, Syriac, and Coptic.

But there are a very small minority of scholars who consider the Aramaic version
of the New Testament to be the original and believe the Greek is a translation.

As far as I know; other than the Gospel by St.Matthew and the Letter
of St.James, most of the New Testament was originally written in
Greek.

Apostles after Pentacost could communicate in any language. My guess
why Greek was the language of choice was because most of the epistles
are addressed to various local churuches in Greece like Corinthians,
Thessalonians, Philippians etc.. So it make sense to write in a
language that the locals can understand.

Dear Father,

I am a new on this forum.I am very intersted in learnig about Syriac
Christianity.I have studied many resources on the Internet-but it is sometimes
really difficult to find some answers.Syriac Christianity is not so good
represented compared to Byzantine or Latin Christianity.

What is the Syriac attitude towards:
-eschatology(if Revelation is not in the canon),
-theosis(deification),
-dietary law,
-observance of the Sabbath and the Lord's Day.

I would be very glad to have these questions answered.

God bless
