READ: Philippians 2:1-11

Fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love. —Philippians 2:2

I love being with people . . . most of the time. There is a special joy
that resonates in our hearts when we are with people we enjoy. But
unfortunately we are not always with those we like to be around.
Sometimes people can be prickly, which may be why someone has said, “The more
I get to know people, the more I love my dog!” When we don’t find
joy in a relationship, we tend to blame the other person; then we excuse
ourselves as we exit to be with people we like.
The apostle Paul asks us to lovingly engage with our brothers and sisters
in Christ. In fact, he calls all of us to be “of one accord,” to look
out “for the interests of others,” and to “let this mind be in you which
was also in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 2:2-5). Think about it. Jesus gave up
His own prerogatives and privileges for us; He chose to live as a
servant and paid the ultimate sacrifice that He might bring us into a
joy-filled relationship with Him (see Heb. 12:2). And He did all that in spite
of our prickliness (see Rom. 5:8).
So next time you are with someone who is not easy to get along with, ask
Jesus to help you find a way to extend His love. In time, you might be
surprised by how God can change your attitude about people. —Joe Stowell
Lord, thank You that while I was still offensive to You,
You saved me with Your sacrificial love. Give me the
same courage and grace to extend to others the love
that You have so graciously extended to me.
The key to getting along with others is having the mind of Christ.

Our Savior, dearly-beloved, was born today: let us be glad. ... Let the saint
exult in that he draws near to victory. Let the sinner be glad in that he is
invited to pardon. Let the Gentile take courage in that he is called to life.
For the Son of God in the fullness of time ... has taken on him the nature of
[humanity], thereby to reconcile it to its Author: in order that the inventor
of death, the devil, might be conquered through that which he had conquered.
And in this conflict undertaken for us, the fight was fought on great and
wondrous principles of fairness; for the Almighty Lord enters the lists with
his savage foe not in his own majesty but in our humility, opposing him with
the same form and the same nature, which shares indeed our mortality, though it
is free from all sin.

READ: Psalm 146

Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his
God. —Psalm 146:5

Recently, I saw a television ad for a restaurant chain that made a dramatic
claim. At those restaurants, the ad said you could “Help Yourself to
Happiness.” Wouldn’t it be nice if a helping of potatoes or meat or
pasta or dessert would be all that was needed to provide happiness?
Unfortunately, no restaurant can fulfill that promise.
Happiness is an elusive thing—as we can see in almost every area of life. Our
pursuit of happiness may involve food or a host of other things, but, in the
end, happiness continues to escape our grasp.
Why? In large measure it’s because the things we tend to pursue do not touch
the deepest needs of our hearts. Our pursuits may provide moments of
enjoyment, distraction, or pleasure, but the cry of our hearts goes
unheard—the cry for help and hope. That is why the psalmist points us to a
better way when he says, “Happy is he who has the God of Jacob for
his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God” (Ps. 146:5).
Help yourself? Yes—if we are seeking the happiness found in the Lord. It is
only when we entrust ourselves to God and His care that we can find the
happiness we seek. Our hope and help are found only in trusting Him.
—Bill Crowder
Father, draw me to Yourself. Remind me that only
in You will I know the real joy and satisfaction that
my heart longs for. Help me to look beyond the
surface things of life to what really matters.
The one who puts God first will have happiness that lasts.

The Baptism of the Lord Jesus

by The Patriarchal Journal

The Lord Jesus, after his amazing birth in the flesh, lived like all his
contemporaries in the city of Nazareth. He distinguished himself from them by
his integrity, the purity of his conduct and clarity of his conscience. Until he
reached the age of thirty he was known as the carpenter, son of Joseph. The holy
gospels were silent about his daily activities during that period. They did not
mention anything except his visit to the temple when he reached the age of
twelve, the age at which the Jewish boy was called son of the law. He had to
memorize the law and the religious duties, and had to visit the temple to appear
before the Lord. The holy gospel mentions that the virgin Mary and Joseph her
fiance lost the boy Jesus after finishing their visit to Jerusalem since they
thought he was among his companions.

Our humble suggestion to Church authorities.
05 Jan'13

As per latest official press release from our Church, the Reporter TV news seems
to be manipulated. So in future how can we overcome this problem. Our
suggestions:

1. Just record the entire proceedings parallel by our team also whenever we give
an interview to a TV or newspaper and keep it as a record.

2. Always give interviews only at our Church centers so that we have full
control for recording etc. (Never go to press club or outside places for a press
conference)

3. Better Metropolitans avoid media reporters to extent possible and send only
priests or learned laymen for news debates etc.. If a high priest make a mistake
in a press debate it will became a great issue and a problem for the Church as a
whole.

4. We have heard from our responsible Church authorities some years back itself
that the Church has plans to dedicate a big room in the ground floor of
Patriarch center for media related things alone with a big screen etc. Since
that day we were eagerly waiting for that, but until now there seems to be no
progress. Hope it will be implemented soon with all facilities which can be used
for many things.

In this occasion may we recall a press conference held at Kottayam in 2004 by
Mor Theophilos Thirumeni to inform about the patriarchal visit. It was also the
time when Late Minister T M Jacob had resigned from UDF ministry following
problems with Oommen Chandy. In the entire press conference Theophilos Thirumeni
explained about patriarchal visit and related things except for one question on
T M Jacob for which Thirumeni gave a fitting reply favouring T M Jacob
considering him to be a member of our Church. But when the news (press
conference) was reported by all the TV channels, the entire emphasis was given
only to the response of Thirumeni regarding TM Jacob issue with main headline
news. The news about the Patriarchal visit was completely sidelined by all the
TV medias. This is the problem with our TV news reports and so we must be extra
careful in avoiding controversies which may affect the morale of an ordinary
faithful.

His Holiness Pope Tawadros II
Christmas Message 2013

I congratulate you my dear beloved children on this blessed Christmas, wishing
you the blessings of joy, richness and peace in your life, work, and families
from the Holy Born Baby in the manger - blessings. May all Christmas
celebrations find you filled with peace in spirit and good health.

The Precious Event

The incarnation and birth of our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the most precious
events in the history of mankind. In this event we meet various aspects of Gods
creation. For example:
Individuals: Joseph, Herod, Mary, Elizabeth and Simeon.
Groups: Jewish shepherds, foreign Magi and children.
Animals: in the manger and also in the temple offerings.
Heavenly hosts: angels, and the Archangels annunciation of the Birth of Christ

Towns: small towns such as Bethlehem, large cities such Jerusalem, and countries
such as Egypt

Different titles: the carpenter, the king, the Virgin, the prophetess, the
elder, and Emmanuel

It is indeed a very precious event, but we will choose three elements only:

First: The New Name, Emmanuel
Second: The New Reality, the Incarnation
Third: The New Depth, Love

1. The new name, Emmanuel

Emmanuel is translated God with us, which is going to happen. In the book of
Isaiah, It was prophesied seven centuries before happening. The prophecy states:
Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall
conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Emmanuel (Isaiah 7:14). It is
repeated again in Isaiah 8:8 and Isaiah 8:10, and it has been fulfilled with the
birth of our Holy Messiah (Matthew 1:23).
And this is what our Lord Jesus Christ expressed in His farewell prayer as He
was just a few steps away from crucifixion when He said, Father, I desire that
they also whom You gave

Me may be with Me where I am, that they may behold My glory which You have given
Me (John 17:24). This shows that the meaning of Emmanuel goes beyond "God with
us" to include that He longs for us to be with Him. So God became with us for an
ultimate heavenly goal of being with Him too.

If we go back to the time of the annunciation to our mother, the Virgin St.
Mary, when she was in Nazareth of Galilee, we see that Archangel Gabriel opened
his message with the following words: "Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with
you (Luke 1:28). This salutation is a declaration of the life of great faith
our mother, the Virgin Mary, lived. As she lived with God from all her heart, so
God did become with her filling all her heart. Thus she gained her purity and
honored status to be the pride of our humanity.
Therefore, we can consider this new name, Emmanuel, the beginning of the new
testament in which God became with us, united in us and for us. And this new
situation continues as we read the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in the Holy
Gospel according to St Matthew as He says, I am with you always, even to the
end of age. Amen (Matthew 28:20); a clear indication of the continuity of the
new name, Emmanuel, in the life of man and in the church which is the Body of
Christ with all its holy mysteries and its life unto the end of time.

2. The New Reality, the Incarnation

Our teacher St Paul says, great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested
in the flesh, (1 Timothy 3:16). From this we know that piety holds the secret
to understanding the truth of Gods manifestation in the flesh. Incarnation is
not simply a passing event that ended, but God manifested Himself in human flesh
to save the long estranged man after the first fall which resulted from the
disobedience of the parents of human civilization, Adam and Eve. As He is not
subject to our fallen nature, but is rather the master of it, He entered
humanity through His Divine Almighty power, born of a miraculous Virgin birth.

The birth and the appearance of the born Son of God Jesus Christ is a proof of
His human nature. At the same time the Virgin birth is a proof of His Divinity.
As St Athanasius the apostolic said, the Logos assumed human nature in its
entirety.

In this new existence, it became possible that God would dwell in man's heart
indeed. This is the privilege and pride of Christianity as it stands out as the
religion in which the Creator meets the created, and through this union, Gods
promise of salvation is fulfilled (Gen 3:15). When the fullness of time had
come, after the long awaited fulfillment of Gods promise to Adam and Eve, the
Virgin, the pride of the human race became the gift that the human race offered
to God to be the lab of the divine unity and the point where heaven and earth,
God and man, and the New and the Old testaments meet.

And thus we see a group of shepherds in their goodness, simplicity, and purity
seeking the Incarnate God, an infant in a small manager, who becomes the focus
of the whole creation including heavenly hosts praising, shepherds declaring
their good news, wise men offering their gifts, the heaven with its bright star
and the earth with its animals. He is with us; that is to say He dwelt among us,
united Himself with the believers, and we received the blessings of being
adopted as His beloved children. Accordingly, we call Him Our Father at all
times.

3. The New Depth, Love

God is Love. Out of His love he created earth from nothing and made man
according to His image and His likeness. But man fell weak, was cast from
paradise according to his own doing and was lost with no salvation. God did not
create man to be condemned or to perish, but to be saved and have everlasting
life (John 3:17). Toward this goal, God was incarnate. For God so loved the
world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should
not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16)
When God created us, we knew that He loved us, but when He was incarnate we knew
that He loved us very much, with a love that is unlimited, beyond description,
that challenges our understandings, conceptions and knowledge.

The Birth of Christ bestowed upon us a deep spiritual meaning that man had never
experienced before. We were blessed to be adopted as children of God who believe
in His Name (John 1:12). The Word, the Son of God, came to us and became the
firstborn among many brethren (Romans 8:29).

We clearly see this new depth in those who gathered around the manger. For
example, we see it in Joseph the carpenter, a respected elder who lived
according to the laws of the Old Testament, who was assigned as a guardian of
the mystery of Incarnation. We also see it in the chosen Ever-Virgin St. Mary
who bore the Image of the new covenant and served the mystery of Incarnation. We
also see it in the determination of the foreign wise men who searched for the
truth, and offered their labor, diligence, and time before offering their
precious gifts of gold, myrrh, and incense.

Even the angels in their praise gave glory to God in the highest for He became
man, declared peace on earth for he was to be crucified, and joy to all people
for he was to be resurrected.
This new depth given unto us through the birth of Jesus Christ is the beginning
of the joyous journey of salvation and the ending of enmity between God and
human race. Reconciliation has happened.

May our Lord Jesus Christ bless this world, and grant it true peace. With my
sincere love to all of you I wish Gods blessings upon you every year.

El Bulli restaurant, 2 hours north of Barcelona, is so popular that
customers must reserve a table 6 months in advance. But noted Spanish
chef Ferran Adrià decided to close the doors of his award-winning
restaurant for 2 years so he and his staff could have time to think,
plan, and innovate. Adrià told Hemispheres Magazine, “If we are winning all
the prizes, why change? Working 15 hours a day leaves us
very little time to create.” In the midst of great success, they took
time out for what is most important to them.
The first-century church in Antioch experienced a time of exciting growth
when “a great number believed and turned to the Lord” (Acts 11:21). As a
result, Barnabas and Saul came to teach the new believers (vv.25-26).
But along with the hard work, they took time to seek the Lord through
prayer and fasting (13:2-3). Through this, God revealed His plan for
taking the gospel into Asia.
Few people can take 2 years off to think and plan. But all of us can build
time into our schedule to seek the Lord earnestly through prayer. As we
open our hearts and minds to God, He will be faithful to reveal the
steps of life and service that honor Him. —David McCasland

Where I can spend a little time in prayer. —Bullock

Paramu belonged to a supposedly "lower" caste. Some of his subordinates at his
workplace belonged to the "upper" caste. Gradually he developed an inferiority
complex and felt that they weren't properly respectful to him. Paramu thought
hard and long on how to resolve this issue and finally he struck gold. Payback
time! Some official forms and gazette notification later, he was officially
named `Thampuran' (lord) Paramu.
It is Paramu who I think of when I see a self-styled Sri Sri Sri or in this
case, a `Abhivandya'.

I would like to thank Shri V T John for pointing out this issue. Not only the
Catholicose of India, but prelates all over the world drop honorific styles when
they're signing their letters. For instance HH the current Pope of Roman
Catholic Church signs his pastoral letters as BENEDICTUS PP. XVI where, PP is
the abbreviated form of Papa.

I don't intend to link humility with their style of signature nevertheless I
hope the ecclesiastics change their style lest they be mistaken by some for
beating their own drum.

READ: 2 Timothy 3:14-17

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God . . . that the man of God may
be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work. —2 Timothy 3:16-17

Karl Elsener, a Swiss designer of surgical equipment in the 19th century,
worked for years on perfecting a military knife. Today his Swiss Army
Knife is associated with excellence in blades and a variety of
utilities. One model includes knife blades, a saw, scissors, a
magnifying glass, a can opener, a screwdriver, a ruler, a toothpick, a
writing pen, and more—all in one knife! If you are out camping in the
wild, this one item can certainly make you feel equipped for survival.
We need something to equip us to survive spiritually in this sinful world. God
has given us His Word, a kind of spiritual knife for the soul. Paul writes:
“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is
profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in
righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for
every good work” (2 Tim. 3:16-17).
The word translated equipped means to “furnish or fit completely.” How does
the Bible equip us for life’s journey? It provides spiritual truth in
doctrine; reproof in showing our imperfections; correction by revealing our
sinful failures; and instruction in living a righteous life. There’s not a
more valuable tool than God’s Word to make us fully equipped for spiritual
survival and personal
growth. —Dennis Fisher
Lord, thank You for equipping us with Your
inspired Word. You’ve given us the tools we
need to live for You. Help us to take time to read
it and to follow what You tell us. Amen.
The Bible contains the nutrients we need for a healthy soul.

Good point. Humility and a simple monastic life is definitely appreciated by
all.

However, the pleasures of worldly life are tempting monastics & priests not just
us laity. Humility in emails is just a small part.

A few examples where wasteful expenditure could be limited and the funds
channeled to better use:

a.. Latest Luxury cars like Mercedes Benz, XUV500 etc....many of them get it as
soon as it is released!

a.1. Poor people in Kerala/India even in this 21st century walk miles to get to
a city.

b. Many Bishop's house (Aramana) with such luxurious bedrooms that even a hotel
suite in a 5-star hotel will be put to shame.

1.Have we seen people having a home with 4 sticks and a plastic sheet to protect
them from the elements?
2. Power and Fame Is that what we stand for? Most problems in our churches and
the sabha as a whole have stemmed from this.

3. Clothing Most expensive Kaapas and cassocks in silk.
3.1. Have we seen monks/priests wearing torn cassocks and only 1 very old Kaapa?

4. Churches and structures being built using crores of rupees when the original
church was in very good shape.
4.1 Do we know there are many churches for example in idukki district that do
not even have proper walls?

The idea of Christian monks historically is based on the Gospel accounts of the
lives of Jesus Christ and the Apostles (and also influenced by the lives of the
Old Testament Prophets). The ultimate inspiration, however, is the life of
Christ. Our Lord's example is of a life wholly dedicated to God, bathed in
prayer and Bible study, teaching, preaching, and including spiritual disciplines
like fasting and Scripture memorization.

I'm not worthy enough to criticize monastics, however as common people we
desire to see our shepherds / monastics who guide us to live a model life that
we can look up to.

Apologies if I have touched any wrong chords.

Thanks
Eldo

READ: John 21:15-22

What is that to you? You follow Me. —John 21:22

When you attend a children’s choir concert, you’re not surprised when the
children look everywhere but at the director. They wiggle, squirm, and
poke each other. They stand on tiptoes to search for parents in the
audience. They raise their hands to wave when they see them. Oh, yes,
and they occasionally sing. We smile at their antics. The behavior is
cute in children. It’s not so cute when adult choir members don’t watch
the conductor. Good music depends on singers who pay attention to the
director so they can stay together as they sing.
Christians sometimes are like singers in a children’s choir. Instead of
looking at Jesus, the great Conductor of the symphony of life, we are busy
squirming or looking at each other or watching the audience.
Jesus admonished Peter for such behavior. After He told him what would be
required of him, Peter pointed to John and asked, “What about him?”
Jesus answered with a question: “What is that to you? You follow Me”
(John 21:22).
Sometimes we are distracted by what others are doing. We think God’s plan for
their life is better than His plan for ours. But God’s plan for each of
us is the same: Follow Jesus. When we watch Him intently, we’ll not be
distracted by God’s plan for anyone else. —Julie Ackerman Link
My times are in my Father’s hand;
How could I wish or ask for more?
For He who has my pathway planned,
Will guide me till my journey’s o’er. — Fraser

I completely agree with Dr. Thomas. A few humble suggestions are:

Internet recordings - The Holy Church should take efforts to make available the
different songs/tunes of the perunnal susrusha kramam on the internet and inform
parish churches of the same. Many parishes are not even aware of the extended
Beth Gazo recordings by L.L. Partiarch Mor Ignatius Yacub III. Eventhough these
tunes slightly differ from the tunes used in Malankara, they are still valid.
Also efforts should be undertaken to have a Malankara version of the Beth Gazo
recordings.

Deacon Rotation - Due to lack of deacons, it would be ideal that a certain
number of deacons who are well versed with the Ekkara/Beth Gazo visit parishes
on a rotational basis to train the choir and altar boys on the perunnal susrusha
kramam. A humble suggestion is that this should be enforced by the respective
diocesan metropolitans.

Hi All,

Just thought to bounce this idea, off my mind....

In this new era of i-phones & android phones (Smart Phones), mobile applications
have taken a front-seat. Nowadays, one can create wondrous works through mobile
applications....

If so, why don't we have our "Sabha Calendar", in the form of a mobile
application widget?

I know that opinions could be biased, just sounded it off, as I felt that it
would help me, personally...and am sure many others would feel the same, once
they get used to.

Inviting Feedback/Suggestions, before even we get into the details....

In Peace....

Purpose and Blessing of Holy Water

A relatively short sermon given at the auspicious great blessing of water, Fr.
John-Brian speaks about the reason for blessing water at all, its uses by
Orthodox Christians and Holy Church. He also talks about why Orthodox Christian
Spirituality uses outward expression to confirm divine Truths.

This sermon uses and refers to scripture readings appointed by the Syrian
Malankara calendar and was given on Sunday, January 6, 2013 by Fr. John-Brian

SERMON OF THE WEEK
January 13, 2013

Next Sunday is the first Sunday after the baptism of our Lord (or "Danaha"
-January 6th)). Gospel reading is from Mathew 4:12-22.
Theme: "Follow me and I will make you fishers of men" - (Mathew4:18)
Gospel Reading: "Jesus Begins to Preach"

"12 When Jesus heard that John had been put in prison, he withdrew to Galilee.
13 Leaving Nazareth, he went and lived in Capernaum, which was by the lake in
the area of Zebulun and Naphtali
14 to fulfill what was said through the prophet Isaiah:
15 "Land of Zebulun and land of Naphtali,
the Way of the Sea, beyond the Jordan,
16 on those living in the
land of the shadow of death a light has dawned."
on those living in the land of the shadow of death
a
  light has dawned.[a]
17 From that time on Jesus began to preach, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven
has come near."
Jesus Calls His First Disciples
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon
called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for
they were fishermen.
19 "Come, follow me," Jesus said, "and I will send you out to fish for people."
20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his
brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their
nets. Jesus called them,
22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him."
(Mathew 4:12-22)

Message: The central core purpose of Christian life is outlined in these verses:
Evangelize, Incorporate, and Disciple. Jesus says, go therefore and make
disciples of all nations; evangelize with the strength of the gospel and teach
the world about the kingdom of God; and follow me, I will make you fishers of
men.

As Jesus was walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brother casting a net
into the sea. They were fisherman. Jesus said to the, "Follow me, and I Will
make you fishers of men."

In order to understand this command, we need to look at the following questions.

(1) What does it mean to follow Jesus? Follow me is an invitation to the
believer for services. The decision to follow Jesus is not a simple task. It is
to set aside one's personal goals and pleasures in order to embrace the purposes
for which God created us. The purpose is to know God in a personal way and make
disciples by teaching them Christ's commandments. To follow Christ means to give
up personal affections, goals and priorities.

When Jesus called Peter and Andrew, their goal was to become successful
fishermen. In asking them to forsake their goal, Jesus commanded them to follow
him and would make them fishers of men's souls.

(2) How does one become fishers of men? When Jesus told Peter to cast his nets
on the other side of the boat, then Peter said "Master, we have fished all night
and caught nothing." But when they used the very effective method of using the
light of Jesus, fish were attracted to it.

(3) How to fish for Christ? Jesus uses an effective method to draw people to
himself. Apostle John quotes Jesus in 8:12, "I am the light of the world, he who
follows me shall not walk in darkness but in the light of life."

Just as the fish is attracted to the light of the disciples, God wants people to
be attracted to his light shining through the disciples. The light of every
believer is the presence of Jesus in their lives. Paul says in Corinthians
4:6-7, "For it is God who commanded light to shine out of darkness and who has
shown in their hearts to give the lights of the glory of God."

(4) What does it require to follow Jesus? It is a call that requires complete
and immediate attachment to God. Peter and Andrew "left their nets." James and
John left their father. The requirement for following Jesus are not the same for
everyone. Basically it is the willingness to exchange their affections, goals
and priorities in life.

Peter was a disciple who actually left everything to follow Jesus. However, he
failed Jesus by denying him on the night of Jesus' arrest. A few days later,
Peter with some of his disciples decided to go for fishing. They got out to do
the fishing but couldn't catch a single fish. Jesus calls them from the shore
and ends up performing a miracle by filling their nets with fish. After they
have enjoyed a fish breakfast together, Jesus comes up to Peter and asks, "Do
you love me more than these fish, nets, and the bread?

All of us can also imagine Jesus asking us the same question. Jesus may mention
our family, all our assets, cash, position, career and all that. Do we love
Jesus more than all our possessions?

Jesus wants us to respond something like, "Yes, Lord. I love you more than all
my possessions. And I want to prove it with my actions. I am prepared to follow
you, for I am your disciple.

READ: Ephesians 1:15-21

In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according
to the riches of His grace. —Ephesians 1:7

A prisoner who survived 14 years in a Cuban jail told how he kept his
spirits up and his hope alive: “I had no window in my cell, and so I
mentally constructed one on the door. I ‘saw’ in my mind a beautiful
scene from the mountains, with water tumbling down a ravine over rocks.
It became so real to me that I would visualize it without effort every
time I looked at the cell door.”
Ironically, some of the most hopeful books of the Bible—Philippians,
Colossians,
and Ephesians—come out of Paul’s house arrest in Rome. The letter to the
Ephesians gives a hint as to what the apostle Paul saw when he thought
about life beyond his place of confinement.
First he saw the spiritual growth in the churches he left behind. This book
opens with a burst of thanksgiving for the vitality of the Ephesian
church (Eph. 1:15-16). Then he sought to open the eyes of their hearts
to even more exalted sights: the “exceeding riches” of God’s grace
(2:7). When Paul cranks up the volume to express God’s plan of love, not one
low, mournful note sneaks in.
If you feel discouraged or question whether the Christian life is worth
it, Ephesians proves to be a great tonic. It prescribes the riches in
Christ available to all. —Philip Yancey
Heavenly Father, thank You for the staggering
good news of the riches of Your infinite grace.
Thank You for the encouragement and hope
we find in Ephesians. Amen.
No one is hopeless whose hope is in God and His Word.

Dear Editor,

Only to state, we have registered Musical books of the Syrian Ortodox Church of
Antioch in occidental musical notes that can supply those who think of bringing
back the original hymns and songs of our dear Church in our site here in Brazil.

Please chech www.igrejasiriansantamaria.org.br where in the item Cultura
(Culture) you will find such registers.

Any musician that knows a little bit of the musical notes can clearly play such
hymns on any instrument.

This work was done by my father deacon Abrohom Gabriel Sowmy (1913 - 1996) and
my brother Deacon Bassim Ibrahim GAbriel Sowmy (1946) during more than 20 years
and in it also are registered in Aramaic the hymns to be chanted.

In the same site you can hear also the voice of my father singing some solos of
our church.

My father was one of the orphans of the 1914-1922 massacre and was cared by our
church, he studied with the great bishop Filoxinos Youhanon Dolabani and was
also a seminarist in St Mark Monastery at Jerusalem, afterwards he turned to be
a British Officer for 19 years under the British Mandate in Palestine, and
during this time he studied ARchitectur turning to be a Civil Engeneer. After
the death of his brother in the fight between Arabs and Jews, 1948, he left the
Middle East and travelled to Brazil where he established himself as a Civil
Engeneer building more that 400 houses and apartaments.

Here in Brazil he projected and constructed the first Syrian Orthodox Church in
So Paulo - the St. John Church - that was consecreated in 1958 by the late
Patriach Mar Ignatius Yacoub III, here also he wrote 18 books - 14 in Aramaic, 2
in Arabic language and one in English.

Really it is important to preserve such treasure to humanity and now we are
preparing to publish in the same site the last part of the work done by the
members of my family that includes diferent musics of the HOLY MASS, and other
ceremonies.

Complementing my idea, is that our Holy Church had in history been the most
persecuted in the Middle East and thus the preaching or evangelization was cut
down by the force of sword; Thanksgod that we preserved our music and traditions
and now can proceed a clear revival of the Church fabulous treasures.

Three points are very important to be elucidated:

The first one is that our Church always gave a good level of liberty to the
parishers participate and create good happy situations so new musical
manifestations must be wellcome, and on the contrary we must not condemn our
priests or bishops for mantaining this practice.

But it is important to consider that many travellers in ancient times testify
that they visited our churches and there saw orchestras with 15 different
instruments playing with church choires.

It is important to say also that many of our hymns are in use in different
churches such as the Syrian Catholic Churck, the Maronite Church, the Chaldean
Church and also in some cases the Nestorian Church.

My humble thoughts about this subject

A.1. POOR PEOPLE IN KERALA/INDIA EVEN IN THIS 21ST CENTURY WALK MILES TO GET TO
A CITY.
We cannot generalize the above things. We must consider the age, physical health
and the amount of travel of the person.

B. MANY BISHOP'S HOUSE (ARAMANA) WITH SUCH LUXURIOUS BEDROOMS THAT EVEN A HOTEL
SUITE IN A 5-STAR HOTEL WILL BE PUT TO SHAME.
I do not know about all aramanas. I spent one night in Patriarch center. The
rooms are very normal size and the food is very simple. When many of our Bishops
take charge of some Diocese, they didn't have an aramana itself. Why are we not
talking about it? Did we take any time to think about the sacrifices they make
building this church; which we are not even ready to think about? It is easy to
criticize others. What about our houses? Is it just enough for our necessities?
1.HAVE WE SEEN PEOPLE HAVING A HOME WITH 4 STICKS AND A PLASTIC SHEET TO PROTECT
THEM FROM THE ELEMENTS?
Are we ready to live in such houses? Before criticizing others we must be an
example.

2. POWER AND FAME IS THAT WHAT WE STAND FOR? MOST PROBLEMS IN OUR CHURCHES AND
THE SABHA AS A WHOLE HAVE STEMMED FROM THIS.
Not in our church. That is why we are only prathigal not vathigal.
3. CLOTHING MOST EXPENSIVE KAAPAS AND CASSOCKS IN SILK.
3.1. HAVE WE SEEN MONKS/PRIESTS WEARING TORN CASSOCKS AND ONLY 1 VERY OLD KAAPA?
How many dresses do we have? How much money do we spend in our beauty parlors?
Not only ladies even our men regularly visit beauty parlors.
4. CHURCHES AND STRUCTURES BEING BUILT USING CRORES OF RUPEES WHEN THE ORIGINAL
CHURCH WAS IN VERY GOOD SHAPE.
How much money do we spend decorating our houses?
4.1 DO WE KNOW THERE ARE MANY CHURCHES FOR EXAMPLE IN IDUKKI DISTRICT THAT DO
NOT EVEN HAVE PROPER WALLS?
Many wealthy churches are helping others in constructing their churches.
Manarcad, North Paravur, Kothamangalam are some examples.

How many of us are ready to go to Mamalasery and participate at least one day
in their prarthana for
their write for worship? How many of us are making an effort to learn about our
church? Our prayers and its meaning. .? For that we blame our Sunday school
curriculum. We refer books after books to improve our academic knowledge. Are we
doing that to improve our knowledge about our faith? We forget that 10 % of
everything including our time is for Yahova which we must be utilized for
prayer, bible study, fasting and scripture memorization etc. This is meant not
only for shepherds but for us too.
The idea is of Christian life not CHRISTIAN MONKS
I'M NOT WORTHY ENOUGH TO CRITICIZE MONASTICS, HOWEVER AS COMMON PEOPLE WE
DESIRE TO SEE OUR SHEPHERDS / MONASTICS WHO GUIDE US TO LIVE A MODEL LIFE THAT
WE CAN LOOK UP TO.
We all think we have only the rights on our shepherds. We forget that we must do
our duties to them in order to demand for rights.
Are we holding them in our family prayer? in our personal prayer?
In our daily prayers do we remember all our priests who are preparing for Holy
Qurbana?
Are we praying for the church daily?
Are we praying to give them the wisdom to guide their sheep?
Are we paying our priests properly to have a descent family life? All of us
demand for a married priest as our vicar. I do agree that we have good reasons
for it. But we are reluctant in giving them a descent salary. At the same time
when our members go to new churches they do not mind to give their 10% to the
pastor !!!!
I feel that there are many questions to be asked to ourselves before
criticizing.
With prayers,
Leena.
