READ: Psalm 112

Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments.
—Psalm 112:1

In 2010, my brothers and I celebrated our dad’s 90th birthday. We hosted
an open house with great food and fellowship. In the living room, family and
friends took up banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, upright bass, and
Irish drum to play and sing all afternoon. A big cake was prepared with
this written on it in frosting: “Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears
the Lord—Psalm 112:1. Happy 90th birthday, Hal.”
When I later examined Psalm 112, I was impressed with how it seemed to
describe my dad—who had walked with God for more than 50 years and is
now at home with Him. Dad had his own share of heartaches and faults,
but his steadfast faith resulted in much blessing. This psalm tells us
that blessings will fall on the man who has a reverential fear of God
and who delights in His commands. In response to this growing integrity
and faith, God will extend blessing not only to the believer but also to his
children (v.2).
This psalm challenges us to reflect an inner reverence for God and to make
continual decisions to delight in following His commands. If we do that, then as
we look back on our years—no matter how many or how few—we will know that
God has helped us live a life of honor. —Dennis Fisher
When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey. —Sammis
If you honor God in your heart, He will be honored by your life.

If you believe that God makes provisions for you, why be anxious and concerned
about temporal affairs and the needs of your flesh? But if you do not believe
that God makes provision for you, and for this reason you take pains to provide
for your need separately from Him, then you are of all men most miserable. Why
even be alive or go living in such a case? ‘Cast thy care upon the Lord, and
He
will nourish thee,’ and you shall never be dismayed at any terror that
overtakes
you.

Malankara World Advent Supplement

For most, the days leading to Christmas is the time for parties and
shopping. We forget the reason for the season.

From December 1 to 25 (15 to 25 for Syriac Orthodox Church), we are to
spend our time in in penance, prayer, and fasting to prepare for the
incarnation of our Lord. Yeldho lent and the advent days are to be spent
in meditation, reflection and bible study.

With this in mind, Malankara World has provided daily meditations and
reflections as well as a 25 day bible reading plan. You can find all
these in our advent supplement at:
http://www.malankaraworld.com/Library/Seasonal/advent/Default.htm

The first week's reading is now available. We will update the website in
the coming weeks.

Thank you.

READ: 2 Corinthians 12:7-10

I pleaded with the Lord three times that [a thorn in the flesh] might depart
from me. —2 Corinthians 12:8

The handwritten prayer request was heartbreaking in its seeming
impossibility: “Please pray—I have multiple sclerosis, weak muscles,
trouble swallowing, increased pain, diminishing sight.” The woman’s body was
breaking down, and I could sense despair in her plea for
intercession.
But then came the hope—the strength that trumps the physical damage and
degradation: “I know our blessed Savior is in full control. His will is
of utmost importance to me.”
This person may have needed my prayers, but I needed something she had:
unabated confidence in God. She seemed to present a perfect portrait of
the truth God taught Paul when he asked for relief from his
difficulty—what he called his “thorn in the flesh” (2 Cor. 12:7). His
quest for relief turned out to be not just a seeming impossibility; his
request was turned down flat by his heavenly Father. Paul’s continual
struggle, which was clearly God’s will, was a valuable lesson: Through
his weakness, God’s grace could be displayed and God’s strength was
“made perfect” (v.9).
As we pour out our hearts to God, let’s be even more concerned with
seeking His will than we are with receiving the answer we want. That’s
where the grace and the strength come from. —Dave Branon
Dear heavenly Father, I bring to You my petitions,
but I give to You my heart. While I plead for You to
answer my prayers, I also submit to Your will so that
my heart may be strengthened and Your work be done.
We pray not to obtain our will in heaven, but to effect God’s will on earth.

we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.

1 John 3:2-3: Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been
revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be
like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him
purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Lord Jesus, I look to your face. May my heart become like yours as I behold your
face. As I look you, Lord, may my heart be purified by faith, Acts 15:9. May I
see you now by faith in my trials, Lord, and be transformed into your image (2
Cor. 3:18), and kept pure for you. I trust you for grace, Lord, to purify my
soul “in obeying the truth through the Spirit,” 1 Pet. 1:22 May your light
shine in all the dark corners inside me, leading me to repentance, leaving no
room for evil, thus purifying myself, as you are pure, hoping to see you as you
are, Lord. Amen.

Note from Acts 15:9 that our heart is purified by faith, and from 1 Pet. 1:22
that our soul is purified by obedience. Today – now – we are being
transformed inside, our hearts being transformed like Jesus’ heart: a heart of
love, a heart that hates sin, Heb. 1:9.

Now we are being conformed to His image, moment, Rom.8:28-30, 2 Cor. 3:18. This
is our preparation for a bodily resurrection like Christ’s at His appearing,
our “lowly” body to be transformed like His glorious body (Phil. 3:21), our
eyes seeing Him as He is, our whole being transformed to “be like Him,” 1
John 3:2.

[2013 will dawn in a few days: now is the time to reflect, to give thanks, to
renew our hopes, to be awake to the coming of the Lord.]

Thankful for the hope to see the Lord,

READ: Isaiah 49:8-18

In an acceptable time I have heard You, and in the day of salvation I have
helped You. —Isaiah 49:8

When I consider Your heavens,” wrote the psalmist, “what is man that You are
mindful of him?” (Ps. 8:3-4). The Old Testament circles around this
question. Toiling in Egypt, the Hebrew slaves could hardly believe
Moses’ assurances that God would concern Himself with them. The writer
of Ecclesiastes phrased the question more cynically: Does anything matter?
I was entertaining that same doubt myself when I received an invitation
to address a conference on the theme: “I have inscribed you on the palms of My
hands” (Isa. 49:16).
God made this stirring declaration to people suffering through a low point
in their history as Isaiah prophesies that they would be taken away
captive to Babylon. Hearing this, the people lamented, “The Lord has forsaken
me, and . . . forgotten me” (Isa. 49:14). To this
lamentation God gave a series of promises—the Servant Songs (Isa.
42–53)—in which He sets the stage of hope for deliverance from hostile
enemies. He foretells of the incarnation and sacrificial death of the
Servant.
Do we matter to God? Christmas memorializes God’s answer: “Behold, the
virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel”
(7:14). —Philip Yancey
Love brought Him down from the glory,
Love made Him come from the sky;
Love in His heart for the sinner
Led Him to suffer and die. —Anon.
The fact of Jesus’ coming is the final and unanswerable proof that God cares.

The Church's sermon which is based on peace is perceived differently by people
who live in sin and corruption and therefore ask an external kind of peace
without fear, danger, famine, misfortune, disturbances, revolution, and wart
protestin
g with media chants such as: 'Make love not war.' They wish to live without God,
without the Church and its Mysteries, without the Gospel, without God's Laws.
They want peace without any rules and prohibitions. They want peace without any
ethical barriers. They want the peace of a consumer society as well as that of
material and sensual pleasures. They want a kind of peace that does not have the
pain of virtue. However, this kind of peace first and foremost is not acceptable
to God, furthermore, it is not the one that the faithful Christian asks for
during the Divine Liturgy, when the priest says 'for the peace from above... let
us pray to the Lord.'

Those who honestly believe and repent and also present all the guilt and sin
before Christ's feet on the Cross, before the spiritual father's stole, depart
confession in peace. In peace which 'passeth all understanding,' a peace that is
incomprehensible. It can neither be measured nor described.

READ: Colossians 1:3-14

Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, and whose hope is the Lord.
—Jeremiah 17:7

Adam and Eve didn’t need hope because they didn’t lack anything they needed.
And they had every reason to think that life would go on as pleasantly
as it started—with every good thing that God had given them to enjoy.
But they put it all at risk for the one thing the serpent said that God
had withheld: the knowledge of good and evil (Gen. 2:17; 3:5). So when
the serpent came with his offer, Eve was quick to indulge, and Adam
quick to follow (3:6). They got what they wanted: knowledge. But they
lost what they had: innocence. With the loss of innocence came the need
for hope—hope that their guilt and shame could be removed and goodness
restored.
Christmas is the season of hope. Children hope for the latest popular toy or
game. Families hope that everyone can make it home for the holidays. But the
hope that Christmas commemorates is much bigger than our holiday
desires. Jesus, the “Desire of All Nations” (Hag. 2:7), has come! He has
“delivered us from the power of darkness,” bought our redemption, and
forgiven our sins (Col. 1:13-14). He even made it possible for us to be
wise about what is good and innocent about evil (Rom. 16:19). Christ in
us gives us the hope of glory.
Praise God for the hope of Christmas! —Julie Ackerman Link
What are the prospects for this earth?
What hope is there for man?

Hope for the Christian is a certainty— because its basis is Christ.

on You I wait all the day.

Ps. 25: 5: Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my
salvation; on You I wait all the day. {on You I wait = for You [You only and
altogether] do I wait [expectantly] all the day long,” Amplified Bible}

May the Spirit draw my heart to you continually this day, Lord, so I may wait on
you all the day: learning from you directly to walk in the way of salvation and
be preserved from all sin, Rom. 8:14. Let me rejoice in that you want me to wait
on you “expectantly” all day long. In the midst of distractions, let me
continually turn to you, and commit myself to you – this indeed, Lord, is my
salvation. Amen.

Isa. 64:4: “For since the beginning of the world men have not heard nor
perceived by the ear, nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the
one who waits for Him.” [“waits for Him” = “love Him,” as Isa. 64:4 is
quoted in 1 Cor. 2:9] Such confidence and patience to wait for God come from our
love for God.

Prov. 8:34: “Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my gates,
waiting at the posts of my doors.” As we thus wait on God, He speaks to us.
Lord, speak to me, I am waiting for you. Amen.

I beg to submit that there is total anarchy in the matter of naming ofour
priests. The lay people as also our married priests give curious names to their
children. This may be harmless if those children grow, live and dieafter
completion of their term of life in this world. as faithfullay peopleof our
Church

The matter becomes a catastrophe and misfortune when a curiously named person
becomes a deacon, a priest anda prelate. When Kochumon becomes a deacon he can
be called Kochumon Semmassan without difficulty. But when he becomes a priest if
he is calledKochumon Achan there is some contradiction between Mon and Achan
and hence it is fair to call thatpriest Kochachan. If and when Kochachan
becomes a Metropolitan noone will dare to call that metropolitan
Kochu-mon-thirumeni or Kochu-mon Methrachan. It will be appropriate to call that
highpriest Kochu-thirumeni or Kochu-methrachan just as St.Gregorios
Chathuruthil is also called Kochu-thirumeni.

I have come across of very curious and awful name by which a deacon of Kottayam
Diocese of our Churchis called. He will soon become a Priest as he is recently
married and the wedding photois published in the Malayala Manorama. The name of
theRev. Deacon, let me call himRev.Priest-designate is R A T H E E S H
EAPEN.I have no case against EAPEN which is equal to Stephen, Sthefanos,
Esthafanos, Esthafan, Panose, Punnoose and Punnen. My case is against R A T H E
E S H( Rathi+ Eeswar)which means GOD OF SEXUALITYwhich again means
KAMADEVAin the Indian context and CUPID ofWesterners. The parents of the Rev
Deacon must have found for him such a name in his childhood but the High Priest
who ordained him a Deaconshould have asked him to shed that awful name from his
person. I fear the Metropolitan who will soon ordain him a priest will also
forget to admonish him to shed that awful name.

In conclusion I submit that I cannot even think for a moment that one day
Ratheesh Achan will be the Vicar of our ParishChurch which is named after St.
Adday whom we call MorAadaayi.

Subject: Christians in Syria, both Orthodox and Catholic, are increasingly becoming targets in the Syrian Civil War.

Christians in Syria, both Orthodox and Catholic, are increasingly becoming
targets in the Syrian Civil War.

The Christian news portal Compass Direct News is reporting of the torture and
subsequent murder of a Syrian Orthodox parish priest caught up in the violence
of the Syrian Civil War.

As reported, Father Fadi Haddad recently left his parish in the town of Qatana
to negotiate the release of one of his parishioners, who had recently been
kidnapped.

Only a week later was the holy man's dead and mutilated corpse found along a
roadside.

Fr. Haddad had his eyes gouged out, presumably done while he was still alive.

A fellow pastor who personally knew Fr. Haddad was quoted;

"Father Fadi's superiors had asked him why he kept traveling back and forth
between Qatana and Damascus.

He responded: 'I cannot not serve Jesus, I need to help people, that is why I
have to move around.'"

It is believed by many Middle East watchers that most of the Christian minority
in Syria (10 percent of the total population) support the regime of President
Bashar al-Assad due to the current national constitution that guarantees
Christian freedom of religion as well as the right to own and operate Christian
schools.

Islamists within the Syrian Army of Liberation had declared their support of a
Shari'a law run Islamic state in the place of Assad, thusly guaranteeing
Christians are counted among their enemies.

Christian Genocide, Again...

According to a report from the official Vatican News Agency Agenzia Fides,
Christians in the Bustan Al Diwan and Hamideh neighborhoods in the city of Homs,
Syrian Orthodox sources have informed them;

"Some Christian families in the two districts had been thrown out by militant
Islamists.

Other sources in Middle East countries have repeatedly spoken of the militant
Islamic extremists travels from Libya, Iraq and other nations toward Syria, with
the aim to infiltrate in the ranks of the Syrian Army of Liberation."

The report went on to state;

"A year ago, before the start of the fighting, there were in town, on the whole,
160,000 faithful and four Bishops of various denominations (Antiochian Orthodox,
Melkite Catholics, Syriac Orthodox and Assyrian Orthodox).

In Homs there are [now] about 1,000 Christians."

READ: Ephesians 2:1-10

You He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once
walked according to the course of this world. —Ephesians 2:1-2

Every age has its own thoughts, ideas, and values that influence the culture,
the “spirit of the age.” It is the kind of growing consensus that
morally lulls us to sleep, gradually causing us to accept society’s
latest values.
The apostle Paul called this corrupting atmosphere the “course of this
world.” Describing the lives of the believers at Ephesus before they
encountered Christ, he said that they were “dead in trespasses and sins” and
“walked according to the course of this world” (Eph. 2:1-2). This
is the world’s peer pressure—a satanically inspired system of values and
ideas that cultivates a lifestyle that is independent of God.
Jesus intends for us to live in the world (John 17:15), so worldly influence
is nearly impossible to escape. But He’s given us His Word to so
permeate our thinking that we don’t have to become conformed to the
world’s values (Rom. 12:1-2). Instead, God helps us walk in His light
(Eph. 5:8), in the Spirit (Gal. 5:25), in love (Eph. 5:2), in truth (3
John 4), and in Christ (Col. 2:6).
As we walk in God’s power and spend time in His Word, He gives us the
strength to live according to kingdom values and not the spirit of the
age. —Dennis Fisher
Father, You have made us alive in Christ and now we
have a new kind of thinking that differs from the world.
Teach us Your kingdom’s values that we might
learn to walk in love. Amen.
Although Christians live in this world, their allegiance is to heaven.

Dear All,
As we progress in observing the Advent Lent and prepare ourselves for the
Christmas celebrations, I would like to share with you a Prayer for us to pray
together.

O loving God who wishes that everybody should repent and attain salvation! We
confess that the craze and craving for liquor which leads persons to suicides,
families to quarrels and societies to perdition is caused by our sins. We admit
that it is because the Church does not give the joy of the Holy Spirit that
people run after the ephemeral pleasures of drinks. The contemporary Youth
resort to drinks on Christmas, Easter and other feasts instead of seeking Thou,
their Creator God, for they fail to experience the ecstasy of piety. Grant to
them the grace to abstain themselves from drinking. May the Church train them to
experience, right from their young days, the spiritual joy received from doing
Thy will. We realize the fact that the drinks served as part of the celebration
of the birthday of King Herod finally led to the beheading of St. John, the
Baptist. Even today there are selfish persons who commit murder by serving
liquor to others. O God!

Kindly effectuate a change of mind in such evil persons. We understand from the
holy Bible that the Babylonian King Belshazzar was killed on the witching hours
of the very same night following the feast served with wine for the thousand
invited guests at his palace. Let this be a lesson for all who serve liquor
during the feasts. Let the writing on the wall as described in the book of
Daniel, You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting, be a message to
all who defy God by drinking on similar occasions. In the modern world where
people die of starvation, let the alcoholics have a good conscience, let them
pray and stop drinking before they become victims of this vice. Let everyone
remember the verse, No drunkard will inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians
6:10). Give us, O Lord, the insight to discern the fact that alcoholism is a
sin, a bane and a disease. Let the movement for liberating people from liquor
grow to the
glory of the holy Triune God. Amen.

[Read, ponder over and meditate upon the following Biblical verses: Proverbs 20:
1, 23: 19-32, Joel 1:5, Galatians 5: 19-21, Ephesians 5: 15-21, Romans 12: 1-2,
Daniel 5: 1-30, Mathew 14: 1-12, Ecclesiastes 12, 2 Peter 3: 10]

The direct discussion of the problems of the rich and wealth as well as the poor

Title: Names of priests of Syriac Jacobite Church

Dear Moderators,

While it is an informative piece of article contained in the above title, I feel
it is not proper to blame the parents for naming a child, who grew up to be and
adult and understanding the meaning of names. I am an old timer. During our
days, the names were not selected from google or a chart. I remember some
children in my family were not named until about 6 - 8 months. Someone in the
family comes up with a name and that name stands. You can find many names, such
as referred in the article, among our people. It is ok if the bishop or anyone
wants to change it without giving a reason. Now that the author has given a bad
taste to this name, how would people affected by it feel? I feel he should not
have mentioned that name and the meaning of it. It is my view.

The priest is standing before the Holy Gate and exclaims: ‘Let us attend
...’,
many times in fact. However, this entreaty is the voice of the Church but most
people do not pay attention to it...‘Let us attend...’, ‘let us
attend...’, and
no one attends.

Many say: We will hear the same things again... again and again.

Others again say: We do not understand anything they say...
How dare you say that whatever it is they read it is always the same, for you
know neither the names of the Prophets, nor the names of the Apostles, nor the
names of the Evangelists?

And again, how do you dare say that you do not understand
the sacred texts of the Readings during the Diving Liturgy,
when you do not study them at home at all? . . .

In order for us not to be ‘judged’, let us attend! Let us attend! Let us be
attentive!

READ: Deuteronomy 15:7-11

You shall open your hand wide to [the poor]. —Deuteronomy 15:8

A homeless man spends time in our local library. One afternoon, while I
was writing there, I took a lunch break. After I finished the first half of a
turkey and Swiss cheese sandwich, an image of the man’s face came
to mind. A few minutes later, I offered him the untouched part of my
lunch. He accepted.
This brief encounter made me realize that with all that God has given me, I
needed to do more to help those who are less fortunate. Later, as I
thought about this, I read Moses’ instructions on providing for the
poor. He told the Israelites: Do not “shut your hand from your poor
brother, but . . . open your hand wide to him” (Deut. 15:7-8). An open
hand symbolizes the way God wanted His nation to provide for
impoverished people—willingly and freely. No excuses, no holding back
(v.9). God had given to them, and He wanted them to give generously
enough to supply whatever was “sufficient” for the need (v.8).
When we offer open-handed help to the poor, God blesses us for our kindness
(Ps. 41:1-3; Prov. 19:17). With His leading, consider how you might
“extend your soul to the hungry” (Isa. 58:10) and freely give to help
others in Jesus’ name. —Jennifer Benson Schuldt
Grant us, then, the grace for giving
With a spirit large and free,
That our life and all our living
We may consecrate to Thee. —Murray
You may give without loving, but you can’t love without giving.

Dear all,
In order to avoid such cases,my opinion is that whenever a person become a
priest, his name should be changed to his church name followed by his family
name.
Thanks.

Dear Moderators:

I am glad that Hon. John and Philip Scaria broght up this topic. It brings up
the issue of how we have changed our traditions and faith without realizing it.

I am not a theologian; so our respected clergy can correct me on this. I was
under the impression that in church we are only known by the name which was
given to us when we are baptized. The baptism name cannot be rathidevan or
kamadevan. It will be Abraham, Thomas etc. names that originated from
Jewish/Syrian names aka biblical names. We have "pet names" at home that can be
local names and many of them have Hindu origins.

In the old days, the pet names were just for use at home and among relatives.
(Just like you may have a special name youc all your spouse.) When the child
joins school, his/her official school name used to be his baptism name plus the
name of his father and sometimes the house name with that. When you go to church
and ask for a nercha, his/her baptism name should be given irrespective aht the
official name is.

Lately, this tradition is bypassed. The official name became pet name + father's
name. This is how we get all this Kamadevan Samuel, Kochumol, Kochumon etc. Our
Parumala Thirumeni may be affectionately called Kochu Thirumeni; but his
official name is still Mor Gregorios, not Mor Kochu thirumeni.

Names were very important in the old testament times. You are known by your name
plus son/daughter of so and so. This is why Moses asked God, 'what should I tell
Israelites your name is' and God replied, "I am who I am." Our names are written
on the palm of Jesus' hand and we hope that it will also be written in the Life
Book maintained by God. I believe we are known by our baptism names to God. That
is the only name he recognizes. So, when we come to church, we should be known
by our name given at baptism and not by the pet name. There is no question
Kamadevan achen is unacceptible. The bishop should give the correct biblical
name at the time of ordination.
