Ecumenical ‘box of chocolates’ laid out for council

Marites N. Sison
staff writer
May 7, 2009
Kingston, Jamaica

The Anglican Communion may seek to resume its dialogue with the Oriental
Orthodox Churches of the Middle East, which had been postponed in 2003,
following tensions among Anglicans worldwide over the issue of sexuality.

The meeting of the Anglican Oriental Orthodox International Commission scheduled
in the fall of 2003 had been deferred at the suggestion of the heads of the
Coptic Orthodox Church, the Syrian Orthodox Church, and the Armenian Orthodox
Church, following the ordination that year of a gay bishop in the Episcopal
Church in the United States and the blessing of same-sex unions in the
Vancouver-based diocese of New Westminster in 2002.

The Inter-Anglican Standing Commission on Ecumenical Relations (IASCER) on May 7
asked the 14th ACC meeting here to endorse a set of resolutions, including one
that urges the resumption of the Anglican Communion’s dialogue with the Oriental
Orthodox Churches of the Middle East.

The resolutions and documents, compiled in a book, The Vision Before Us, also
asked the ACC to commend to member provinces for adoption, “key sections” which
include matters ranging from the administration of baptism and eucharist, to
guidelines for ecumenical participation in ordinations to the Four Principles of
Anglican Engagement in Ecumenism.

Gregory Cameron, who is bishop of the Welsh diocese of St. Asaph and former
IASCER director, likened the book to “a box of chocolates” that offers many
delights and surprises.

Bishop Cameron, who recalled that at the last ACC meeting in Nottingham,
England, he had come with a shopping list of 18 resolutions to carry forward the
Anglican Communion’s ecumenical work, this time decided to “pack an awful lot in
one drop.” He asked the ACC to “consider them, amending, changing or adding to
them,” saying they are “vitally important” to the Communion.

The resolution, asks the ACC, to:

• endorse the Four Principles of Anglican Engagement in Ecumenism, which
describes “the Anglican approach towards ecumenical activity and goals, and
commends them to churches of the Communion;

• endorse the IASCER resolution as they relate to the administration of the “two
sacraments ordained by Christ himself,” baptism and the eucharist, and urge
their adoption throughout the Anglican Communion “in the light of the importance
of the convergence on administration of these sacraments in ecumenical
relations;”

• reaffirm the Guidelines on Ecumenical Participation in Ordinations;

• request the Joint Standing Committee of the Primates’ Meeting and the ACC to
“commission a review of the processes for the reception of ecumenical texts”;

• welcome the continuing work of the various dialogue commissions of the
Anglican Communion, namely the Anglican Old Catholic International Co-ordinating
Council, the Anglican Lutheran International Commission, and the Anglican
Methodist International Commission for Unity and Mission;

• look forward to the Anglican Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC)
Preparatory Commission, and the commissioning of the third phase of the ARCIC,
and the resumption of the work of the International Anglican Roman Catholic
Commission for Unity and Mission and the International Commission for Anglican
Orthodox dialogue;

• resume the work of the Anglican Oriental Orthodox International Commission.
(The resolution notes that, “In seeking such a response IASCER recognizes that
there is a need to carefully explain to the Oriental Orthodox churches the
processes by which the provinces of the Anglican Communion are responding to the
Windsor Report, and also to address some of their expressed concerns by drawing
their attention to the Statement of the Primates’ Meeting in 2003.” The Windsor
Report, published by the Lambeth Commission on Communion, offered
recommendations on dealing with the conflict in the Anglican Communion over
human sexuality.)

A brief on the current state of Anglican-Oriental Orthodox Churches of the
Middle East relations notes that, “A visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury to
Holy Etchmiadzin, the seat of the Catholicos of All Armenia, and to other Middle
Eastern Oriental Orthodox patriarchs in September 2007 also did much to move the
situation forward, and guests from a number of Oriental Orthodox churches
attended the Lambeth Conference” in 2008.

Bishop Cameron, meanwhile, noted that “getting the Anglican position right” on
baptism and the eucharist is crucial. “They’re vital foundations for ecumenical
engagement and encounter.”

The document on ecumenical participation in ordinations offers “a handy set of
guidelines,” on “how far is it appropriate” for Anglicans to participate in
ordinations of other traditions and vice versa, he said.

The response to draft papers for the Lutheran World Federation Lund Statement,
On Episcopal Ministry within the Apostolicity of the Church, offers “a useful
guide to Anglican episcopacy as well,” said Bishop Cameron. He said that the
LWF, who he described as “our close cousin,” had, as an ecumenical gesture,
asked Anglicans to comment on the draft paper.

Representatives of six ecumenical partners of the Anglican Communion were
presented to the ACC as their fellow delegates, namely Monsignor Mark Langham
(Roman Catholic Church), Metropolitan Nikitas (Orthodox), Prof. Harald Rein (Old
Catholics), Paul Gardner (Moravian Church in Jamaica and World Council of
Churches). They also included two Canadians, Bishop Michael Pryse (Evangelical
Lutheran Church in Canada, representing the Lutheran World Federation) and Rev.
John Gibault (director of faith and order of the World Council of Churches).

“We welcome them not as observers but as sharers in our work and prayer,” said
Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams.

Bishop Cameron, meanwhile, said his work has enabled him “to see diverse parts
of God’s family,” adding that the experience “has blown my mind.” He added: “I
have had the privilege of being able to become a member of the world family of
God’s household.”

ACC delegates were later asked to participate in “ecumenical streams” of their
choice that focused on various areas of Anglican engagement in ecumenism. They
included Roman Catholic and Orthodox relations, Protestant relations and
conversations, churches in communion, and United and Uniting Churches. Bishop
Cameron urged delegates to ponder the question, “What difference does that all
mean to my local church and what are the local implications of ecumenism?”

The Arians took control of the See of Antioch, one Arian Bishop Theophilus
consecrated by Eusebius of Nicomedia (Eusebius of Nicomedia was a pupil at
Antioch of Lucian the Martyr, in whose famous school he learned his Arian
doctrines), the emperor Constantinus II sent him, on a mission to propagate
Arianism( G.Fiaccadori, Teofilo Indiano, Raveena,1992, page5-6).In that time
Philaclus was the Patriarchate of Antioch. He was a heretic.

Some historians says he was a native of Maldives and the Christians he visited
in India were real Indians(NEILL, S., A History of Christianity in India; The
Beginnings to A.D. 1707, Cambridge, 1984.page40;BROWN, L.W., The Indian
Christians of St.Thomas, An Account of the Ancient Syrian church of Malabar,
University Press, Cambridge, 1956.page 66-67)

The main thing is he came to India from Antioch and returned to Antioch(The
Ecclesiastical history of Sozomen and Philostorgius,1855,London,page 525.)

If the Bishop Theophilose came to India for propagating Arianism. When Arians
took over the Patriarchate, the major people did not accept that heresy. So
that time in India Christianity was very strong (See arrival of Joseph of Edessa
and Knai Thomman) as well as the Indian Christians under the Patriarchate of
Antioch, that's why he visited India.

Hello brothers

Very much appreciated the efforts of our Radio Malankara team. Live telecast of
the Holy Mass from our different churches from last one week is really
commendable. Its give us a chance to participate o those Holy mass from remote
areas.

The church choir of the Chennithala St.George Horeb Jacobite Syrian Church was
singing our liturgical songs in almost cinematic style. Do we accept and promote
this sort of music in our holy mass. In Roman Catholic holy mass you can listen
these sort style.

As my understanding all our liturgical songs can be sings in 8 different styles.
When we have our own diversity in the liturgical music, why we have to adopt the
modern style?

Let our bishops and priests make some move to handover these beautiful tunes
which they learned in their seminary to our choir and let our laity also sing
and enjoy the divine style of singing.

I find the attempts of 2 little angles on this

How beautiful is this. If these kids can do, why not us and our choir?

Dear all,

Mr.V.T.John is absolutely right. This move by IOC has some resemblance to the
establishment of IOC Catholicate in 1912.It was done with the help of a deposed
Patriarch, secretly. There were gaps in the succession which were deliberate. The
idea at that time was to ensure survival of IOC if the court case went against
Mor Vattasseril. That also explains why Mor Vattasseril himself chose not to
become Catholicose because he could have easily got that position. The aim of IOC
now is a long term plan of having a parallel Syrian Patriarch. It will slowly
unravel over the years. This is just a foundation.Anyway SOC need not worry about
it too much, if we are united, IOC cannot do much to us.

Regards,
Aby

CHRIST IS RISEN! TRULY HE IS RISEN!

"The third [stage of contemplation] is knowledge of the terrible things that
await us before and after death, as revealed in the Holy Scriptures...If in my
uncertainty I lose heart for a while because I have completely failed to do what
I should to the limits of my power, I shall fall lower than Hades...How wretched
I am! What have I brought upon myself, not only through my sins, but rather
through my refusal to repent!...Because of this, I fear that I shall dwell in
Hades with the demons, and I live in dread of the coming judgment, with the
river of fire, the thrones and the open books (cf. Dan. 7:9-12), angels running
ahead, all humankind standing by, everything naked and exposed (cf. Heb. 4:13)
before the fearsome and righteous Judge...Yet finding courage in Thy
inexpressible compassion, In Thy goodness and tender mercy that excel our
understanding, I fall before Thee and entreat Thee, Lord: 'Have mercy upon me, O
Lord, for I am weak' (Ps. 6:2), and forgive me my many crimes...When

...God's grace kindles a sense of deep penitence in the heart, you should allow
your intellect to be bathed in tears of compunction..."

Ecumenical gathering in Washington DC in June

Representatives of Eastern and Western Christianity will gather in Washington to
focus on the theme of "Monastic Spirituality in Everyday Life."

Friday, May 01, 2009By Spero News

The thirteenth annual Orientale Lumen Conference will be held in Washington D.C,
June 15-18, 2009. This ecumenical conference will focus on the Christian East
and is open to the public, for both lay persons and clergy. The speakers and
attendees come from four main religious groups: Roman Catholic, Eastern
Orthodox, Eastern Catholic and Oriental Orthodox churches. Orientale Lumen XIII
will be held at the Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, DC and
will focus on the theme of "Monastic Spirituality for Everyday Life".

These conferences provide an opportunity for "grass roots" ecumenical dialogue
among the participants, and encourage discussion of the similarities and
differences among the Eastern and Western Christian Churches. The conferences
include a variety of prayer services from a wide range of Church traditions. In
this way, the conference provides a learning experience and intellectual
discussion, as well as a unique spiritual experience.

Monastic spirituality may be practiced alone, or in groups. The focus is on
returning to God, and making use of certain specific practices: prayer, fasting,
silence, vigils, reading, good works. Monastic spirituality is seeking a meaning
to the mystery of life. The speakers will assist us with their understanding,
knowledge and advice on this topic, and how better to integrate it in our daily
lives.

The speakers are from around the world, including: the Metropolitan Jonah,
Primate of the Orthodox Church in America; Bishop Hlib Lonchyna, Ukrainian Greek
Catholic Church; Mother Lois Farag, Coptic Orthodox Church; Sister Barbara Jean
Mihalchick, OSBM, Byzantine Catholic Church of America; Prof. Richard Schneider,
Orthodox Church in America; Mr. Elias Damianakis, Greek Orthodox Church,
Iconographer; Metropolitan Kallistos of Diokleia, Greek Orthodox Church;
Archimandrite Robert Taft, S.J., Pontifical Oriental Institute (by pre-recorded
video). Father John Crossin, OSFS, Executive Director of the Washington
Theological Consortium and President of the North American Academy of Ecumenists
will be the moderator.

Each speaker will give a plenary session followed by a panel discussion and
questions from the audience. All of the papers presented will be published and
provided to the attendees in a Proceedings book after the conference. A variety
of liturgical services will be conducted during the conference to provide an
opportunity for attendees to pray together for Church unity. Opening and closing
remarks will also be made by various Church leaders in attendance.

The Orientale Lumen Conferences have been meeting annually since 1997 in
Washington D.C. and other locations around the world including San Diego,
Detroit, as well as the United Kingdom and Turkey.

Dear Group

I am working on a paper involving the terminology used over the centuries in the
Western, Byzantine, and Syriac church and in the Islamic community to refer to
the Church of the East/Nestorian church. I have had limited success in finding
examples where “Nestorian” Christians refer to their own church by any name.
Often they speak of the “Patriarch of the East” and “those of the East”, but I
would appreciate examples from 6th-15th c. of any terminology that the
non-Jacobite, non-Melkite East Syrians use to refer to themselves. Also I am
trying to identify the earliest known use of the terms “Chaldean” and “Assyrian”
for members of this group. Help!

Dear Dn. Prince,

It is great to see your posting in this forum particularly your’s research
inquiry about the Church history. And also to know that Western authors have
amply written about the Antioc-Malankara relationship of ancient period(pre-1498
AD). Which is entirely different from the writings of the *Aasthana
Charithrakaranmar of IOC* like Z M Paret, Cheeranachan, M Kurian Thomas, and so
on who’s hypothesis and research aptitude were based on imagination and fantasy
of MOSC and solely to prove that Syrinas(SOC) came in Malankara by the visit of
Mor Gregorios Abdul Jaleel and his successors came to Malankara for colonise
it.

Some more tips to you that, there is a common terminology among historians in
India that “if one wants to know about the pre-modern history of India, he must
go to India House Library London” wherein abundant manuscripts are kept about
India. I hope you will be able to do that also. Similarly there is a major
difference between the current Portuguese language and the language Portuguese
used in India (old) during their colonization period, and most of the writings
(documents) related to Malankara was written in the old Portuguese language. And
today not many know the old language. The only Indian scholar who knows old
Portuguese language is Prof. Sumit Sarkar, formerly in Delhi University, now
based in London(either in LSE or in
Oxford), who must have studied almost all the documents written about
Malankara. I think he can guide you in this case. Without seeing the
original documents writing history is a futile exercise.

Dear Dn. Prince,

May God bless you of your great endeavor for the church.

Matrimonial Advertisements NOTIFICATION: The SOCM-Forum is keeping a
free matrimonial advertisement section, which will be published on
every Tuesdays.

This service can be availed by any Malankara Christians. However,
recently we have noticed that many esteemed members, after sending
the matrimonial advertisements to us, are not informing us whether
the ad is to be continued for longer periods or not. Some times we
face embarrassing situations when the advertised party got married
and still the marriage ads in the forum are repeated.Hence, as on 17
April 2007, we have decided to keep any matrimonial advertisements
initially for a period of SIX MONTH only. If any advertisers
would like to extent this period after its initial period, they have
to send us a written request to extent the period. In such cases, we
will continue the publication of the advertisement for a further
period of one or two months, as per their request. However, we will
not be continuing the ads thereafter.

We request every advertisers of today's matrimonial section, to
cooperate with us in informing whether the marriage is over or you
want to continue the ad for another period. We will only continue
with the advertisements of such confirmed advertisers.

Hope everybody will understand and cooperate with us.

Be with us and be part of us.

CHRIST IS RISEN! TRULY HE IS RISEN!

"It is in the renewing of the mind, and the peace of the thoughts, and the love
and heavenly attachment for the Lord, that the new creation - the Christian - is
distinguished from all the men of the world. This was the purpose of the Lord's
coming to vouchsafe these spiritual blessings to those who truly believe in Him.
Christians have a glory and a beauty and a heavenly wealth which is beyond
words, and it is won with pains, and sweat, and trials, and many conflicts, and
all by the grace of God."

Sts. Barsanuphius & John.

St.Mary's JSO church San Francisco

By the immense grace of God, a new Jacobite Syrian Orthodox congregation was

The next Holy Qurbono is planned for June 7th, 2009. More details including the
location and timing will be posted later. Again, please spread word about the

Dear All

This small book in English which briefly explains the Genocide which our Syrian
Orthodox people faced in Turkey. What was the main reason behind excommunicating
Patriarch Abdul Messiah. The original text of the Synod's decision regarding the
excommunication etc.

I was in Kurkumo Dayro when John Mathew visited there. We together visited the
Monasteries and the villages in Turabdeen. It was a good experience to see our
people and to receive their warm and heart felt love and affection to our people
from India. Later he went to Germany and got some resources from there also.
From there, he collected the details from our monks and also from the faithful
migrated from Turkey to Europe. He took a good effort in bringing out this book.
The Syrian people in US read this book and they appreciated. Really this book
will help the new generation concerning the real factors or reasons for the
early split in our church. His Holiness made a good comment after reading this
book.

Dear Philip Mathew,

It should not be considered as a"Laissez-faire mentality' of Mr. Mathew, but to
be considered as the real picture of the intention of the IOCians. You and other
IOCians do have "fuedal mentality' that whatever you people think are the
correct version as you always criticise Patriarch of Antioc and HB Thomas I
Catholica while talking about "unity and Peace in Orthodox communion'. If you
are a true cristian then you should apreciate and respect other church's
leaders instead of speading venom against them. First you must teach the IOC
leaders about the true version of the Cristianity(love others as you do
yourself) then to interpret others view about the church matters

The Continuing Legal Battle of the Syriac-Orthodox Monastery in Turkey

The land dispute trial of St. Gabriel Monastery in Turabdin, Turkey was
postponed for the fourth time. On May 6 a new court session was held in Midyat,
Turkey. Again the decision was postponed, this time until May 22 and June 24.

Nuri Kino celebrates yet another Christian feast in Turabdin in south-eastern
Turkey. In previous publications he has examined the trials of the Syriac
Orthodox monastery of Mother Gabriel. Now he reveals that it is not only the
monastery that will have their land confiscated. Many of the villages may also
have their land seized by the Turkish state. And it will all be perfectly legal.

CHRIST IS RISEN! TRULY HE IS RISEN!

"After a long spell of prayer, do not say that nothing has been gained, for you
have already achieved something. For, after all, what higher good is there than
to cling to the Lord and to persevere in unceasing union with Him?"

St. John Climacus.

UCLA's Centre for India and South Asia(
http://www.history.ucla.edu/people/faculty?lid=3586 ). He has widely written
about portuguese trade and history with Malabar (Malankara).

Congratulations! Dear Sabu Achen.

The need of a parish in Bay Area as well as in San Fracisco, California was long
overdue. We are confident that with Achen's able leadership and commitment more
parishes will sprout for the benefit of our faithful in the West Coastal
hemisphere. Our prayers are with you Achen.

With love & best wishes,
