By the immense grace of God, the new church building for the Jacobite Syrian
Orthodox Parish in Doha, State of Qatar, was consecrated and dedicated by His
Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas the Patriarch of Antioch and All the
East, the Supreme Head of the Universal Syrian Orthodox Church, on February 26 &
27, 2009, in the name of the blessed Apostle and Martyr St. James the brother of
our Lord Jesus Christ, and shall henceforth be known as the St. James Jacobite
Syrian Orthodox Church, Doha, Qatar. The consecration and dedication of the
church was conducted by His Holiness the Patriarch on Thursday, February 26th
evening and in this His Holiness was assisted by Their Eminences Archbishop Mor
Philoxinos Mathias Nayis the Patriarchal Assistant, Metropolitan Mor Gregorios
Joseph the Secretary of the Holy Synod of the Syrian Orthodox Church in India
and Metropolitan Mor Athanasios Geevargis the Patriarchal Vicar for the Jacobite
Parish in Qatar. Patriarchal Secretaries Very Rev. Raban Matta Al Khori and Rev.
Dn. Joshy C. Abraham as well as Rev. Fr. Paulose Puthiyamadathil the Vicar of
the St. James Jacobite Church in Doha and Rev. Fr. Zachariah of the Knanaya
Church in Doha assisted His Holiness and Their Eminences at the consecration
service. On Friday, February 27th, the first Holy Qurbono was celebrated at the
new church by His Holiness the Patriarch with Their Eminences Mor Philoxinos
Mathias Nayis, Mor Gregorios Joseph and Mor Athanasios Geevargis as the
co-celebrants. On this occasion, His Holiness the Patriarch entreated the
faithful to be thankful to God for granting the grace to build the new church
and to rededicate themselves to God and His Holy Church. His Holiness also
expressed thanks to His Highness the Emir of the State of Qatar and His
Highness' Government for providing the land for building the church and directed
the faithful to pray also for His Highness the Emir and the esteemed State of
Qatar. About two thousand people attended the Consecration Ceremony and the Holy
Qurbono. Priests and Distinguished Guests from other sister Churches in Doha
also graced the occasion.

His Holiness the Patriarch had earlier arrived in Doha on February 25th evening
accompanied by the Patriarchal Assistant His Eminence Mor Philoxinos Mathias
Nayis and the Patriarchal Secretaries Very Rev. Raban Matta Al Khori and Rev.
Dn. Joshy C. Abraham (Rev.Dn. Markose). His Holiness and the accompanying
Delegation returned to Damascus on Sunday, March 1, 2009.

Metropolitan Athanasios Geevargis

The Piravom segment brings with it 12 new grama panchayat segments spread over
Kanayannur and Moovattupuzha taluks to the Parliament segment. An interesting
feature of the delimited Kottayam Parliament constituency would be the tilt in
the equation among various communities. The loss of Vazhoor and Changanassery
may have its impact on the Hindu votes in the constituency, while the
politically sensitive Jacobite Church which has a dominant presence in the
Piravom Assembly segment, would now play more active role in deciding the final
outcome.

As we observe the first 40 days of Great Lent, we are partaking in the
40 days and 40 nights that our Lord himself sacrificed in the desert.  The last
10 days of the Holy Great Lent reminds us of the suffering of our Lord during
his Holy Passion Week.

During Great Lent Morning Prayer we pray, ".....there are some who
abstain from food and are fasting and at the same time are filled with
jealousy and hatred. There are some who keep themselves aloof from
alcohol but kill the brethren. Oh, Our Lord!  Who became man for our
salvation and who observed the lent, bless us to receive the
absolution of sins. We must give up all evils, deceits and falsehood
and say with pleasure, Lord, bless us in your mercy and grace." During
this period of Great Lent we are to give up all "FUN" activities and
animal products.  Refraining from these things won't make Lent
beneficial and complete.  Only when these things are coupled with
prayer, meditation, and learning scriptures does Lent become the most
valuable. People often times remember to give up goods and activities
like chocolate, meat, TV, internet, etc but they forget to fill the
things given up with these spiritual replacements.

Great lent is a time of prayer, repentance, forgiveness and
reconciliation with others.  By observing Great Lent we should forgive
others for their trespasses against us and erase any disputes that we
have with others.  After we forgive others and make peace with our
foes, we should sincerely repent for our sins and seek confession.  It is
obligated for ALL Orthodox Christians to receive the Holy Sacrament of
Confession before or during Passion Week.

As we pass through Mid-lent, please examine yourselves and make sure
this Great Lent is of great meaning to you.  In the days that we have
remaining in Great Lent 2009, let's continue to fight the temptations
of the devil and continue to grow in faith. Please keep in mind, we
are all weak and sinful servants in the presence of the merciful Lord.

Wedding in Syrian Orthodox Church in India

The Syrian Orthodox Church has adapted the service of Holy Matrimony with a
distinct touch of the Indian culture by adopting two Indian customs.  First is
the adoption of a Hindu wedding custom of tying the "Thali" (Minnu) by the groom
around the bride's neck.  Thali is a small heart shaped gold pendant with a
cross embossed on it.  The second custom is that of draping the bride's head
with a colorful bridal saree (Manthrakodi).  It is a cherished tradition to take
seven strands from the bridal saree to make the thread for tying the "Thali".

The matrimonial service is rich in symbolism.  In the betrothal service, rings
are blessed and put on the fourth fingers of the right hands of the bride and
groom.  The rings symbolized a contract sealed and placed on the bride and the
groom by the priest who is a representative of God.  It is an outward sign that
the couple is desirous to marry one another of their free will without
compulsion.  Since a ring has no loose ends, it signifies the permanency and the
lifelong nature of the relationship expected from the couple.

"The Blessing of the Crowns," signifies the special grace of the Holy Spirit
descending on the couple.  The "Crowns" represents the crown of thorns placed
upon the head of Jesus Christ who laid down his life for the Church.  Jesus is
the heavenly groom and the Church is His bride.  The symbolism involved is that
of sacrificial love.  Nowadays, we use the gold-chain and cross instead of the
actual crowns. Late Kadavil Mor Athanasius thirumeni used to bless with actual
crowns. Mor Julius Kuriakose thirumeni also does the same now.

The "Thali" is tied around the bride's neck with a knot, which signifies the
bonded relationship between the couple.  The covering of the bride's head with a
colorful bridal saree is symbolic of the groom's acceptance of the
responsibility to protect the bride and care for her.  The draping of the bride
with the bridal saree signifies her welcome to the household of the groom.  It
also reminds her of Rebecca who took a veil and covered herself when she first
saw Issac, as a symbolic act of her humility, nobility, chastity and devotion to
her life‑long partner united in marriage by God (Genesis 24:65).  This
moment is dramatically highlighted by a woman from the groom's family
positioning herself behind the bride to assist her as she replaces a kin of the
bride.  The bishop/priest then joins the right hands of the bride and groom
together and declares them as husband and wife.
