Dear Mr. Apu Jose,

Thank you for your observation regarding Syrian Odthodox Members wearing Rosary.
I too feel that this is a Catholic tradition. First of all our Syrian Orthodox
members should realise that God is Omnipresent, Omnicient & Omnipotent. If we
have very good faith on God we don't need to wear or use any sign or symbol for
the protection or presence of God. I do admit that wearing a normal cross along
with the chain on the neck which will be a symbol of Christian faith.

Also we do believe in Mother Mary because she is the mother of our God Jesus
Christ. By the birth of Jesus Christ only Mother Mary became the Holy Mother.

With prayers,

Mathew Thomas Kannathumuriyil,

should be taught in the Seminary all the true practices of our Church , so that
the laity seeing these things are not misled.

Dear All,
Earlier in this forum I have mentioned that the numerical strength of the
Jacobite Syrian Community in the Chalakudy Parliamentary Constituency could
change the political map of the constituency. Now both the UDF and LDF are
considering a Jacobite for it.

Matrimonial Advertisements NOTIFICATION: The SOCM-Forum is keeping a
free matrimonial advertisement section, which will be published on
every Tuesdays.

This service can be availed by any Malankara Christians. However,
recently we have noticed that many esteemed members, after sending
the matrimonial advertisements to us, are not informing us whether
the ad is to be continued for longer periods or not. Some times we
face embarrassing situations when the advertised party got married
and still the marriage ads in the forum are repeated.Hence, as on 17
April 2007, we have decided to keep any matrimonial advertisements
initially for a period of SIX MONTH only. If any advertisers
would like to extent this period after its initial period, they have
to send us a written request to extent the period. In such cases, we
will continue the publication of the advertisement for a further
period of one or two months, as per their request. However, we will
not be continuing the ads thereafter.

We request every advertisers of today's matrimonial section, to
cooperate with us in informing whether the marriage is over or you
want to continue the ad for another period. We will only continue
with the advertisements of such confirmed advertisers.

Hope everybody will understand and cooperate with us.

Be with us and be part of us.

"Hold faith and humility fast within you; for through them you will find mercy,
help, and words spoken by God in the heart, along with a protector who stands
beside you both secretly and manifestly. Do you wish to obtain these things,
which are a fountain of life? From the very onset take hold of simplicity. Walk
before God in simplicity and not with knowledge. Simplicity is attended by
faith; but subtle and intricate deliberations, by conceit; and conceit is
attended by separation from God."

What ever we say, Rosary prayer gives a lot of grace, and we can see that in
terms of spirituality and mission Catholoc church is much higer than us. So I
think there is no harm in rosary prayer as it has the power to grand grace from
GOD.

Dear Mr. Mathew,
Thanks for passing on the link to find the book "On the Incarnation" by St.
Athanasius. I was looking forward to read this very valuable jewel of Eastern
Orthodoxy literature. I have downloaded and book marked it now for a detailed
reading and future reference. Hope it will be useful for many others in this
forum who are yet to read the book.

"By remembering Jesus and saying the Jesus Prayer we cultivate in our heart love
for Jesus and His commandments. What is more blessed, what is more happy, what
is more sweet than to contemplate always the most glorious, the most pleasant,
and the most beloved Name of Jesus Christ, through Whom anything anyone asks of
the Father and of Him Himself one receives without fail? 'Whatever you ask the
Father in My Name, He may give it to you' (Jn. 15:16). And again, 'Whatever you
ask in My Name, I will do it, that the Father may be glorified in the Son' (Jn.

thought and recollection of the salutary, divine, and fearful Name of Jesus
Christ, the Son of God, Whose Name is above every name and before Whom every
knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue
confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father' (Phil. 2:9-

*Fasting*

This is a call for every member to join for chain prayer and fasting. This is
the time we consecrate ourselves, our families and our Church to God. Believe
God for victories and breakthroughs in every area of our life.

*Then Joshua said to the people, "Consecrate yourselves, for tomorrow the LORD
will do wonders among you." Joshua: 3: 5*

Throughout history, God has called on his people to humble themselves
through fasting and prayer. Fasting is a spiritual weapon God uses to
advance His Kingdom, spark revival and bring victory in people's lives.

*Why Fast?*

Declare a fast, Proclaim a solemn assembly; Gather the elders And all the
inhabitants of the land To the house of the LORD your God, And cry out to the
LORD.*Joel:1:14*

"When a man is willing to set aside the legitimate appetites of the body to
concentrate on the work of praying, he is demonstrating that he means business,
that he is seeking with all his heart, and will not let God go unless He
answers. (Arthur Wallis)

*Five Reasons for fasting:*

*1. Jest Fasted:* Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted
by the devil. He fasted for forty days and forty nights, and afterwards he was
hungry. Mathew 4:1-2

Before he began His ministry, Jesus fasted forty days. He knew he was going to
need spiritual strength to fulfill his purposes. Fasting makes us physically
weak but spiritually strong and prepares us to do God's work.

*2. Fasting is an act of humility and consecration*

I put on sackcloth and humbled myself with fasting, Psalm 35:13

*3. Fasting helps us become sensitive to the Holy Spirit.*

While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, " Set
apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them" Acts:
13:2

*4. Fasting Brings Revival:*

In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the
years, whereof the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would
accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. And I set my face unto
the Lord God, and pleaded with him in prayer and petition, with fasting, and
sackcloth, and ashes. Daniel 9:2-3

*5. Fasting is healthy:*

Fasting cleanses your digestive system from toxins. Doctors consider fasting a
cure for certain allergies and diseases. By learning to deny ourselves and
exercising discipline, fasting breaks unhealthy addictions in our lives.

How do I continuously pray when I am fasting, in regular work day? Please read
Jesus Prayer…

*Jesus Prayer*

The Jesus Prayer also called the Prayer of the Heart or Prayer of the Mind is a
short, formulaic prayer often uttered repeatedly. It has been widely used,
taught and discussed throughout the history of the Eastern Churches. The exact
words of the prayer have varied from the simplest possible involving Jesus' name
to the more common extended form:

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

The Jesus Prayer is one of the most profound and mystical prayers and it is
often repeated continually as a part of personal ascetic practice. The practiced
as contemplative or meditative chanting, silently. The aim of the Christian
practicing it is not humility, love, or purification of sinful thoughts, but
becoming holy and seeking union with God which subsumes them.Practicing the
Jesus Prayer is strongly linked to mastering passions of both soul and body,
e.g. by fasting. *The emphasis is on the meaning not on the
mere utterance of certain sounds.*

It stands along with the regular expected actions of the believer (prayer,
almsgiving, repentance, fasting etc.) as the response of the Orthodox Tradition
to St. Paul's challenge to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thess 5:17).
It is also linked to the Song of Solomon's passage from the Old Testament:
"I sleep, but my heart is awake" (Song of Solomon 5:2)

The analogy being that as a lover is always conscious to his or her beloved,
people can also achieve a state of "constant prayer" where they are always
conscious of God's presence in their lives.

The Jesus Prayer is not limited only to monastic life or to clergy but all
members of the Christian Church is advised to practice this prayer, laypeople
and clergy, men, women and children.

People who say the prayer as part of meditation often synchronize it with their
breathing; breathing in while calling out to God (Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God)
and breathing out while praying for mercy (have mercy on me, a sinner). Another
option is to say (orally or mentally) the whole prayers while breathing in and
again the whole prayer while breathing out and yet another, to breathe in recite
the whole prayer, breathes out while reciting the whole prayer again. This state
is regarded as the accomplishment of Saint Paul's exhortation to the
Thessalonians to "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

*Levels of the prayer*

As general guidelines for the practitioner, different levels in the practice of
the prayer are distinguished. Three stages of Prayer:

· The oral prayer (the prayer of the lips) is a simple recitation,
still external to the practitioner

· The focused prayer, when "the mind is focused upon the words" of
the prayer, "speaking them as if they were our own."

· The prayer of the heart itself, when the prayer is no longer
something we do but who we are.

Once this is achieved the Jesus Prayer is said to become "self-active". It is
repeated automatically and unconsciously by the mind, like a (beneficial)
Earworm. Body, through the uttering of the prayer, mind, through the mental
repetition of the prayer, are thus unified with "the heart" (spirit) and the
prayer becomes constant, ceaselessly "playing" in the background of the mind,
like a background music, without hindering the normal everyday
activities of the person.

Icons: an Evangelical Anglican perspective
Graham Kings

The word ‘icon’ has been popularised through it use in modern computers. We
understand the phrase, ‘click on the icon’. Apple Macintosh developed this way
of highlighting the meaning of a computer application by focusing on an ‘icon’,
which is a recognisable pictorial symbol of it, and provides access to it.
Currently, we see adverts for the iPhone which feature the screen of the phone
ablaze with icons. An interesting secular echo, perhaps, in word and image, of
the screen across the sanctuary of an Eastern Orthodox church, the iconostasis,
on which the icons are positioned…?

Church icons are, of course, different from computer icons – they are personal
rather than impersonal – but they are still vitally symbolic and, for many,
provide some sort of intriguing access. Traditionally, evangelical Anglicans
have been wary of icons, though many now appreciate them for prayer. The second
of the ten commandments, warning against idols and the consequent concern about
veneration turning into something akin to worship, are all taken seriously.

‘You shall not make for yourself an idol, whether in the form of anything that
is in heaven above, or that is on the earth beneath, or that is in the water
under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or worship them’ states the
second commandment (Exodus 20:4).

Jews, Muslims and some Protestant Christians today take a stand against icons
based on this verse. It was also a key concept during the ‘Iconoclast’
controversies of 8th to 10th centuries. For almost 200 years the Emperors and
Church authorities vacillated between iconoclasts (image breakers) and
iconodules (image worshippers). The Syrian monk John of Damascus (655-750 AD)
pressed the case for icons based on the doctrine of the incarnation and the
theological importance of matter. In the end his argument, which I think is very
convincing, won through

During Lent we turn to God and ask that we be changed. Our fasting in Lent is a
prayer for a change of heart. That change of heart is of God’s making not our
own. Fasting is something that has become unpopular in past years. Perhaps it is
something to rediscover not as a means of losing weight but a sign of our desire
to fast from sin.

Lent is a time during which we not only clean up our lives because of our
ambiguities (our 'yes’s' and our 'no’s'), but we also clarify our vision. Our
minds need to be sorted out by contemplating the person of Jesus and everything
he stands for. He stands for the big 'Yes' to God. He endorses it throughout his
ministry and particularly his journey to Calvary and his breaking out of the
grip of death to live to God and to enable us to do the same. The Christian life
is about that. Being the body of Christ, his Church, we are called to live his
'Yes'."

This is the moment for resolutions which will affect our lives in a real way;
not just our physical state, but the whole of our lives, spiritual, physical,
emotional, intellectual, the lot. Lent is the opportunity offered to us so that
we can take stock of our relationship with the Lord, with the Church and with
our sisters and brothers, recognise what needs attention and, with the grace of
God, move forward in that knowledge.

We could consider seriously the idea of the Sacrament of Reconciliation during
Lent. The Sacrament, which is still usually called ‘confession’, is one part of
the Church’s practice that has seen perhaps the greatest decline.

Dear Appu,

Details about  Churches in Bangalore are available at St Mary's cathedral's
website, http://www.bsmcathedral.org/Churches_Bangalore.html

This doesn't include the information about any Knanaya church, as per my
understanding there are 2  Knanaya churches in Bangalore.

From christ university the Hosa Road church will be near by, around 6 KMS . You
can take any bus going towards electronics City and get down at Hosa Road
Junction ( Central Jail Junction) . This church is under construction and the
services are conducted at the basement I guess. It is on the right hand side of
the highway and one plot inside, there is one sign borad on the main road itself.
You can see one Bakery along the highway and the chruch is behind that building
( Second plot after the bakery when you walk along the hosa road).

Holy Qurbano starts at 8.30 AM.

You can try Queen's Road Cathedral too, it is around 8 KMS from Christ College.
There are 2 services on Sundays, 7.00 Am as well as at 9.00 Am. This is close to
Shivaji nagar bus stand  and Cantonment railway station. Contact details are
given in the web site. You can call achan for any clarification on route etc.
