Dear SOCM Moderators,

I could watch Holy Qurbono celebrated by L.L Perumpilly Mor Gregorious
Geevarghese on 1994 sep 11th at St. Mary's Syrian Orthodox Church , Los Angeles
on the 8 days lent feast broadcasted through Malankara Vision
(http://www.malankaravision.com) .

Thank you for broadcasting this, as its really difficult to get a good
audio/video quality Qurbono of Perumpilly thirumeni today.

I wish to have a copy of the CD or DVD of the same for me. Can you please help
me for this? I can transfer the amount that is necessary for this including all
costs to the Bank a/c you specify. If this is possible, is it possible to
courier it to the address below after the money is transferred ? (Address and
contact details are withheld by moderators)

Awaiting your response regarding this,

Yours in Christ,

Russian Orthodox Church Sets Out To Be 'First Among Equals'

February 24, 2009
By Jeffrey Donovan
Is the Russian Orthodox Church set to launch a "new crusade" -- at home and
abroad?

Father Daniel Sysoyev, a prominent Russian missionary, recently urged the
opening of an Orthodox "base" in Kyrgyzstan from which to launch a proselytizing
"offensive" across mostly Muslim Central Asia. Speaking at a forum in Moscow on
February 17, Sysoyev Said the church should open theological faculties in
Bishkek universities and "use Kyrgyzstan as a base for all of Central Asia,
Afghanistan, Tibet, and China."

Central Asia, he said, could prove fertile ground. After all, since 1992, a
half-million Central Asians have become Protestant converts. And Catholic
missionaries, the priest added, successfully set up a Kyrgyz diocese in just a
few years.

Bakyt Murzubraimov, chairman of the theology department at Osh State University
in Kyrgyzstan, dismisses Sysoyev's ideas as "nonsense" that would never work in
Central Asia. But the priest's remarks, and others by senior Russian clergy,
reinforce a sense that Kirill, who took over as patriarch of the Russian
Orthodox Church on February 1, intends to intensify his church's politically
fraught mission at home and in Russia's "near abroad" -- with the apparent full
blessing of the Kremlin.

"The Moscow Patriarchate is devoted to the idea of a Great Russia," Viktor
Yelensky, president of the Ukrainian Association of Religious Freedom, told
Deutsche Welle on February 16. "Evidently, [Kirill] wants it to be the 'Putin
Church.'"

Kirill, as metropolitan of Smolensk, once said the Russian church should hold
first place among all other Orthodox churches, including the Church of
Constantinople, which is traditionally considered "first among equals" in the
galaxy of Orthodox patriarchates. "We are the rightful heirs of Byzantium,"
Kirill has said.

Reeling In Ukraine

While Central Asia may be a fanciful target for Russian Orthodoxy, Ukraine is
shaping up to be the prime battleground where Kirill's bold ambitions will be
put to the test.

Historically, the Ukrainian church answers to the Constantinople Patriarchate.
And despite efforts by Russia through the centuries to control Kyiv's church,
the Orthodox world has always maintained that the church in Ukraine -- and the
Baltics, Belarus, and Moldova --
remains outside Moscow's canonical jurisdiction.

Ukrainian Orthodoxy is currently split into three churches, including one that
is loyal to Moscow. But the Russian church now looks set to test that chaotic
status quo in a bid to bring most of the Ukrainian faithful under Moscow's
leadership.

According to Igor Frolov, spokesman for Russia's Union of Orthodox Citizens,
Russia's global resurgence hinges not on natural-gas pipelines or foreign
policy, but the battle over control of Ukrainian Orthodoxy. "If the Russian
church loses Ukraine and thus loses its
position as the major Orthodox Church, it will harm the whole civilizational
Russian geopolitical project," Frolov told a conference on religion in Moscow on
February 17.

Frolov added that Kirill "has the qualities" not only to unite all Orthodox
churches around him, but to displace the ecumenical patriarch of Constantinople,
Bartholomew I, as the Orthodox world's symbolic leader -- its "first among
equals."

Frolov also said the Russian church should be as powerful and effective as the
Vatican, which oversees the world's 1 billion Roman Catholics. Orthodoxy
currently has some 200 million faithful worldwide, but Frolov said that under
Moscow's stewardship, "we have
every right to say that we need our Orthodox billion."

But does Kirill actually seek to take over the Orthodox world? "Doubtless, there
are contrasts between Constantinople and Moscow," says Father Romano Scalfi, an
Italian Catholic priest and expert on Orthodoxy.

"There are reasons for this. Moscow has the biggest church in Orthodoxy;
Constantinople has only a few hundred faithful," Scalfi adds. "Still, I don't
see Moscow trying to take over from Constantinople, but rather seeking to
influence things more -- which is perhaps natural, given its size."

But that might be small comfort for some faithful in Ukraine.

Yelensky, the head of the Ukrainian Association of Religious Freedom, says he
fully expects the Moscow church to intensify its missionary activities in
Ukraine. More broadly, he says the two countries' political relations will be
increasingly projected into the religious sphere, with a resulting rise in
tensions between the churches.

Going Too Far?

But if the Moscow Patriarchate follows through with such an aggressive strategy,
many believe it will backfire.

"As a person who stands for the interests of ethnic Russians and the Russian
state, [Patriarch Kirill] will get little understanding [from other Orthodox
churches], particularly in Moldova, Ukraine, and Belarus," says Nikolai
Mitrochin of the Center for Eastern European
Studies at the University of Bremen.

In an interview with the newspaper "Moskovsky komsomolets, " Sergei Bychkov, a
religious historian and analyst, noted: "Kirill is very active and belongs to a
breed of reformers. I think we could end up with a schism because many bishops,
particularly those from abroad, don't like his reformist tendencies."

Finally, there's the Orthodox battle within Russia itself. Supporters of the
church and its efforts to influence Russian social life -- despite a
constitutional separation of church and state -- are in the ascendance since
Kirill's election, according to some observers.

That impression was bolstered by reports on February 24 that the church will be
granted the right to own the land on which churches and its other buildings are
located -- making the Moscow Patriarchate, in effect, Russia's biggest
landowner.

Lyubov Sliska, deputy speaker of the State Duma, sparked a chorus of fiery
reaction recently when she stated that the Russian church must be free to
influence the country's social life -- a clear reference to the church's
controversial bid to introduce courses on "basic Orthodox culture" in Russia's
public schools.

Such efforts to rock the secular boat, in Russia's uneasy mix of ethnicties and
faiths, are dangerous, says Rafik Mukhammetshin, rector of the Russian Islam
University in Kazan. "We live in a secular state," he says. "Religious values
play their role in the state, but this doesn't mean religion should become
ideology."

Dear Moderators,

Yours and Mor Behnan Study Circle's sincere efforts in spreading the
request for renovation of the above-mentioned Church is very much
appreciated. However, when you spread this news item, you could
have uploaded a SUPPORTING kalpana in this regard from the Metropolitan
In-Charge of Hirange Area H.G. Mathews Mor Aprem. This will give more
authenticity to the request. The photo given was of a dilapidated shed, where
obviously no Holy Qurbana could have celebrated for long, but why not sending
the photo of the 'already started' church construction, as mentioned in the
Vicar's letter?

Again, is the bank account number given is opened in the name of the Church or
in the name of the Vicar? It is not clear as well. You know, now DD's are not
able to issue in the name of a relegious instituion, as per the Indian Govt.
directives and it is possible only in the name of a person. Hence, the
supporting kalpana from the diocesan bishop and/or metropolitan incharge will
give more genuinity for this request and people can send money in the name of
the Vicar Fr. Mathew Kaattiparambil itself. I hope you can do the needful at
the earliest.

Regards

Varkey Titus

Matrimonial Advertisements NOTIFICATION: The SOCM-Forum is keeping a
free matrimonial advertisement section, which will be published on
every Tuesdays.

This service can be availed by any Malankara Christians. However,
recently we have noticed that many esteemed members, after sending
the matrimonial advertisements to us, are not informing us whether
the ad is to be continued for longer periods or not. Some times we
face embarrassing situations when the advertised party got married
and still the marriage ads in the forum are repeated.Hence, as on 17
April 2007, we have decided to keep any matrimonial advertisements
initially for a period of SIX MONTH only. If any advertisers
would like to extent this period after its initial period, they have
to send us a written request to extent the period. In such cases, we
will continue the publication of the advertisement for a further
period of one or two months, as per their request. However, we will
not be continuing the ads thereafter.

We request every advertisers of today's matrimonial section, to
cooperate with us in informing whether the marriage is over or you
want to continue the ad for another period. We will only continue
with the advertisements of such confirmed advertisers.

Hope everybody will understand and cooperate with us.

Be with us and be part of us.

Egyptian Copts Campaign to Rebuild Church

Written by The Media Line Staff

Published Monday, March 02, 2009

The Egyptian Orthodox Church – also known as the

Coptic Church – has joined a campaign launched by the Coptic Diaspora to obtain
permission to rebuild a church in the governorate of Sohag, the Daily News Egypt
reported.

“There is legislation that differentiates between Egyptians versus the right to
build and/or maintain places of worship. The procedure for
Egyptian Muslims to build a new mosque is not in the hands of our president and
does not require a presidential decree,” Youssef Sidhum,
editor-in-chief of the Egyptian newspaper Watani told The Media Line.

Praise the Lord,

I am Prakash John from Ahmedabad,

I am also looking for this CD/DVD.  If this is a prized product/publication, I
shall pay for the same if sent to me by VPP at my following address;  Else, if
you can mail the file, we will burn the CD, from the System itself and play as
and when we feel the need.

The fact is that if we can have such a CD/DVD at home, playing the same for a
full family viewing will add to the spirituality and  for the younger generation
it will be an opportunity to learn and have more insight into the rights and
rituals our Great Fathers have have been performing and connect themselves to
the root of our Religion and its practices.

Hope, all concerned would appreciate my view and make it possible for us to have
the Holy Qurbono CD/VCD as an invaluable treasure at our home.

As for me, Lord Jesus, I am one of those who believe
in you because of Yourself. I believe in You because, with the help of Your
grace, no image within me can replace or wipe Your image and because ne word, as
much as Yours, can penetrate to the very depths of my heart. I believe in You
because You have made me know the beauty of Your face... I believe in You
because, for me, outside of You there is nothing.

Looking for a good book for Lent?
Consider, Jesus, A Dialogue with the Savior. This book was originally
published in French, by the Monastery of Chevetogne, in Belgium. The author was
only known as a Monk of the Eastern Church, who was later discovered to be the
late Archimandrite Lev Gillet. This book consists of 46 short meditations that
recapture the words and scenes of the Gospels. The writings put the reader in
direct contact with Our Savior who says “Follow Me.” The meditations will help
to lead us to live the scriptures in order that we may rediscover the Word that
touches our hearts, so that we may be able to follow Him.

Dear All brothers & Sisters,

Shlomo in HIS Holy Name.

We the St.Mary's JSOC Parish in Baroda are struggling to have a place of worship
of our own. During the past we had to run from pillar to post to get a place on
lease to conduct the holy mass. We used a Methodist school, a CNI church, the
community center of Catholic church etc. to conduct the holy services. Since
2003 we are using a prayer hall on the rooftop of our Vicar's house as the place
of worship. We are thankful to the honorary services of Rev..Fr.DR..C.P Varghese
for his broad heartedness and love towards the church.

Baroda is a fast growing city in the western belt. It is rich in culture and
educational Institutions and also a hub of Engineering and Chemical Industries.
Lot of our youngsters keep on coming to this city for jobs and trainings. Since
we do not have a permanent church or institutions they tend to join the IOC
churches. Unfortunately about 50% of the IOC church members are our people
including the family members of some of our clergy. IOC have a big church of
500+ members, 4 chapels, 6 HS schools and other institutions where as we do not
even have a chapel of ours. We are only a handful of people who stick to the
true faith of the Holy Syriac Orthodox church. Many had parted ways and joined
Marthoma and RC churches. This is the situation in many outside Kerala cities.
Whenever a wedding is to be conducted we run after the RC or Methodist people
for sanction to conduct the matrimony in their church.

With GOD's mercy and blessings we have found a small place in the city and paid
a small advance. Our newly formed Mumbai diocese's assistant metropolitan H.E
Kuriakose Mor Eusebius has assured all the help in acquiring this piece of land.
The initial cost of the project would be around Rs.30lacs.

We all are middle level income people and it is difficult for us to raise the
complete cost on our own. If we miss this opportunity this time we may not be
able to dream for the same because day by day the realty prices are going up.

Though a small parish, we have the permission to use the CNI cemetery. We
conduct the Holy Eucharist on every alternate Sundays and on all Sundays during
the great lent. We conduct all the main feasts, have a Sunday School in the name
of St.Athanasius Valiya Thirumeni to teach the theology and history of the
church to our handful children, we have regular prayer meetings and Bible Quizes
and participate in all the ecumenical activities. We had the opportunity to
welcome H. Eminences DR. Themotheos Thomas and DR. Sevarios Abraham in 2008.

Since we all are parts of HIS body every member / parish should be caring for
the other. We have many wealthy parish churches who do the work in their
vicinity / area only but certainly this is not the mission which our Lord have
given to us.

We request all the faithful and well wishers of the church to contribute towards
the project to own and build our own place of worship in Baroda.

The cheques and DDs can be made in favor of
`St. Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Baroda' and send to

LENT = Leave Every Negative Thing

As you begin this Holy Season, may you discover the true meaning of
LENT, by Leaving behind all Negative things of the past and strive for
a Future filled with Hope! (Phi 3: 7 – 14).

A Different Approach to Fasting...

Fasts have a tendency to be oriented toward things like giving up food
or television. But there are many other creative ways we can welcome
Jesus' healing touch.

Here are suggestions you may want to consider.

1. Fast from anger and hatred. Give your family an extra dose of love each day.

2. Fast from judging others. Before making any judgments, recall how
Jesus overlooks our faults.

3. Fast from discouragement. Hold on to Jesus' promise that He has a
perfect plan for your life.

4. Fast from complaining. When you find yourself about to complain,
close your eyes and recall some of the little moments of joy Jesus has
given you.

5. Fast from resentment or bitterness! Work on forgiving those who may
have hurt you.

6. Fast from spending too much money. Try to reduce your spending by
ten percent and give those savings to the poor.

Please tell this to as many as possible and surely, you will be blessed
abundantly.

Wishing you all Peace, Love, and Happiness during Lent.

Yes, Jesus Loves You!

Dear readers,

These days I see increasing no of Syriac Orthodox (and for that matter India
"Orthodox") people adopting this Roman catholic practice of praying the Rosary.I
have even noticed once a Rev Deacon of our Church wearing rosary. I feel they
should be taught in the Seminary all the true practices of our Church , so that
the laity seeing these things are not misled.

I always feel that this is against the Holy faith of the Holy church. They give a
Roman Catholic view of St Mary which ,I guess does not wholly conform to the
Oriental Orthodox view. In Rosary ,they use the Crucifix (Cross with statue of
Jesus nailed to it ) and not the orthodox Easter cross. They also use the statue
of St Mary rather than the Picture of St Mary with the child Jesus (which is
used by Oriental Orthodox Christians).

Some of the prayers that make up the Roman practice of the Rosary. We have those
because they are Biblical:
The Lord's Prayer
Hail Mary

The main reason we don't have this tradition is because the practice of the
Rosary has a larger emphasis on Mary than Christ. We have similar prayer
traditions though. They tend to focus on saying the prayer "Lord have mercy,"
which is directed to Christ.

If anybody of this forum has anything to add or correct in this subject, I
humbly request you to do the same as soon as possible.

With prayers,

Pope Returns Church to Russian Orthodox with Message

Vatican Information Service

'How can we not recognize' said the Holy Father , 'that this beautiful church
reawakens within us a nostalgia for full unity, and upholds our commitment to
work for full union among all Christ's disciples?'

VATICAN CITY, (VIS) - The Russian Orthodox church of St. Nicholas in the Italian
city of Bari was returned to the custody of the Patriarchate of Moscow during a
ceremony held in Bari on March 1, 2009. During the celebration, Cardinal
Salvatore De Giorgi, archbishop emeritus of Palermo, Italy, read out a Message
from the Holy Father.

"The Russian people", says the Pope in his Message, "have never faltered in
their love for this great saint who has always supported them through moments of
joy and of difficulty. Evidence of this is also to be found in this Russian
Orthodox church of St. Nicholas, built at the beginning of last century to house
pilgrims who, often on their way to the Holy Land, stopped at Bari, a meeting
point between East and West, to venerate the relics of the saint.

"And how can we not recognise", the Holy Father adds, "that this beautiful
church reawakens within us a nostalgia for full unity, and upholds our
commitment to work for full union among all Christ's disciples?"

In his Message, Benedict XVI also reiterates his best wishes to Kirill,
recently-elected as Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, and calls upon the Holy
Spirit to illuminate his ministry.

During the ceremony - which was originally due to have taken place on 6 December
2008, Feast of St. Nicholas of Bari, but was postponed due to the death of
Russian Orthodox Patriarch Alexis II - Giorgio Napolitano, president of the
Italian Republic, consigned the keys of the Orthodox church of St. Nicholas to
Dimitry Medvedev, president of the Russian Federation.

A very interesting blog about the conversion experience from Hinduism to Eastern
Orthodoxy.

When I read this blog I felt ashamed about how little I know our Orthodox faith.
We spend more time learing about vattipana case, samudaya case, seminary case,
1958 Supreme court judgement, 1995 judgement etc.

The book 'On the Incarnation' by Mor Athanasious (Patriarch of Alexandria, whom
we remember in the fifth thubden) that Anjali is referring to in her blog is
available online. I have downloaded it and has started reading it.
