The Cross
By Joseph Y. Lee

To the Brothers and Sisters who are faithful in Christ
Jesus:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord
Jesus Christ.

Many brothers had disappointed me when I was a graduate
student in Irvine. Even though I never used illegal
drugs, never went to a nude bar, never smoked, never got
drunk, never murdered, never fornicated, and never joined
a violent gang, many of my Christian friends in Irvine
treated me as if I had done all of these sins. I knew I
was no different from those sinners, who did all of those
sins. Despite my honesty, I was ostracized and often felt
not welcomed by other believers. I believed that I was
ostracized when I struggled with loneliness and anger.
I was extremely sad and alone.

Despite my sadness and loneliness, I also knew that Jesus
never used illegal drugs, never went to a nude bar, never
smoked, never got drunk, never murdered, never fornicated,
and never joined a violent gang, and yet we crucified Him
on the cross. He did not deserve to be crucified on the
cross. When I realized this, I realized how big the cross
was.

Thank you for your prayers.

Grace be with all those who incorruptibly love our Lord
Jesus Christ.

Following the will of God,
Joseph Yosuk Lee

Dear Family members of our departed brother Elias,

I hereby extend my heartfelt condolences. It is not easy to deal with the
situation. But the great man died while on duty and we all honor him. I believe
God honor him too.

I noticed a big gathering from different walks of life were there at the funeral
and at his home to share the sorrows of the family. That spirit is really good
and encouraging. We always see all our brothers and sisters in the funerals.
Good sermons are also heard at the funeral.

When I attend a funeral I feel and see the presence of our Loving Father in
Heaven. When I see the flow of people into the place I see more and more of
Jesus coming in. One more person walk in, I see one more Jesus walking into the
place to give more of Jesus to the family. Then I see Jesus walking in the midst
of the grieving family members and wiping their tears off and comforting them. I
think every family-member must feel the touch of Jesus on occasions like this. I
take Jesus with me when I go into a funeral or into a grieving family. Once I
reach there, I back off and Jesus takes over.

I see Jesus walk up to the wife, husband, son or daughter, father or mother, and
identify himself as the savior, answer, solution, peace, and cheer. Oh, I hear
like this: Jesus asking to each and every one of the grieving family, what is
this? Don't you know me? I am Jesus, your Lord and Savior. Your departed loved
one is with me at a safer place where you also want to be some day. I called him
back. Don't I have the right to call him back? But I am with you always to
provide you with joy and peace, more than what the departed one could give you.
Look at me, see who is here for you and stop crying. My presence would bring
back all you think you lost. Also I will provide for you. I will protect you.
Don't you know Job? He lost everything. Then he saw ME in the cloud with his own
physical eye and kept quiet. But I gave him back everything he lost plus a lot
more in such a way that he did not even remember the past.

At a time like this I urge the family to see more of Jesus and that is the only
way we can find answers to questions like “Why me? Why like this? Also through
the words, talks, condolences, letters from the children of God, try to feel and
experience more of Jesus.

May the good Lord fill you with the Holy Spirit.

With prayers
Jose

Kadavil Paulose Mor Athanasius Thirumeni (1833-1907)

On Nov. 2nd 2007 the Malankara Jacobite Syrian Church remembers Paulose Mor
Athanasius thirumeni (Kadavil Thirumeni I) along with St. Gregorios (
www.ParumalaThirumeni.org /.com), who passed away 100 years ago on Saturday 2nd
Nov. 1907. Kadavil thirumeni who was installed as Metropolitan by late Patriarch
of Antioch Mor Peter IV at Vadakken Paravur Church, was the first metropolitan
ordained for the diocese of Kottayam after its formation in 1876 as per the
decision of the historic Mulanthuruthy Synod.

From 1891 onwards he assumed the additional responsibility of Ankamali, the
largest diocese in the Malankara church. He was the senior most of the six
Metropolitans ordained for the Malankara Archdiocese by the Patriarch Moran Mor
Ignatius Pathros IV during his Apostolic journey to India from 1875 to '77.

Mor Athanasius, a profound Syriac scholar, had translated many religious books
from Syriac to Malayalam including some chapters from the New Testament. His
ardent efforts to uphold the faith and traditions of the church is applauded by
all. It was the vision and the collective efforts of the three Metropolitans;
Pulikottil Mor Dionysius, Chathuruthil Mor Gregorios and Kadavil Mor Athanasius,
that helped in revamping the church in Malankara during a troublesome period.

On Saturday, 2 November 1907, Kadavil Thirumeni I passed away at the age of 74.
His mortal remains were interred in the northern side of the St. Mary's church
at Thrikkunnathu, Aluva. Malankara Metropolitan Pulikottil Mor Dionysius Joseph
led the last rites of the late Metropolitan.

"What are the passions in themselves? They are 'a certain hardness or
insensitivity of being.' Their causes are to be found in the things of life
themselves. The passions are the desire for wealth and amassing of goods, for
ease and bodily comfort; they are thirst for honor and the exercise of power;
they are luxury and frivolity; they are the desire for glory from men and fear
for one's own body. All these passions have one common name - 'the world.' The
world means carnal conduct and a carnal mind. The passions are the attacks of
the world on man by means of the things of the world. Divine grace is the only
power capable of repulsing them."

Dear Members,

I am writing this letter in response to a thing Mr. Kochumon Mannichery pointed
out in Digest No.2412. He wrote “Majority of the Church members are not aware
the differences between the main Episcopal churches. Why because most clergy men
and the church governing bodies never bothered to teach the faith.”

I am only very junior priest in Kottayam Diocese of our Church. The time
schedule of my Sunday Service is as follows.

* Morning Prayers (not truncating any part like Prumion-Sedra and Evangelion) –
1 hr
* Holy Qurbono – 1 hr
* Preaching on Evangelion – 10 Minutes
* A class on Orthodox Faith (like why are we facing East while praying, Why do
we stand while worship, Why do we pray for departed while many new line churches
teaches against it etc) for the whole assembly in the Church, just after the
preaching – 20 Minutes

Within this short period I have served as a Priest, I am following this schedule
wherever it is possible for me. But, in the Parishes where I am assigned to
serve, when I started to follow this, the Parish Committees and a few Parish
people also objected. They said it may cause people to go to other parishes as
this would consume more time. It was really difficult for me to implement this
for them. In spite of their initial resentment I succeeded in it. Now, they find
it useful and very much eager to listen to such classes.

I teach just after the Preaching, only because I will not get the whole Parish
people together in any other event or meetings of youth, Samajam, or prayer
groups.

In certain days there will be 2 or more ‘Kalpanas’ to read, there will be
prayers for the Mediation of St. Mary or other Saints, there will be special
prayers of gratitude for people celebrating their birthdays and wedding
anniversaries. In such occasions, I resort to teach a small subject which will
not consume more than 10 minutes and I brief the preaching on Evangelion to 2 or
3 minutes only. So it will not go beyond 15 minutes altogether for preaching and
teaching.

I find ‘Preaching and Teaching’ along with Holy Eucharist a very successful one.
I am blessed to get the support of the Parish Committee even if they initially
objected. I am not a Vicar of any Church. So the Vicars also are supporting me
in my attempt to do this.

But, I should say one thing very openly that you can’t blame clergy
for not teaching and preaching unless you make ground for them to do it
successfully. Many parishes’ stance is that clergy must not try anything in
addition to the routine things going on there. They oppose change to the current
system. Kindly, give space for clergy to make additions and modifications. Let
them to cut down all those unnecessary practices prevailing in the church.
Learn, worship and grow together. that is all what I have to say.

God Bless
Yours in Christ

Churches worried about fall in number of nuns

(Indian Express; Thursday November 1 2007)

KOCHI: Very few young Christian women in the state now dream of walking down the
aisle as a bride of Jesus. The number of women who want to dedicate their lives
to the service of Jesus by becoming nuns is dwindling.

An apparent lack of interest in spiritual service in the young generation, the
obsession of parents about their children’s future and the increase in number of
religious congregations have all contributed to the serious problem faced by
churches in Kerala.

The fall in numbers has affected dioceses all over the country as Malayalis
constitute 75 percent of the total number of nuns in India.

As the state’s young women eye higher education and promising careers outside
the sphere of religious service, churches in the state have turned their
attention to the Malabar region, especially Thalassery and Mananthavadi.
Vocation camps are being held here during June-July after SSLC and Plus-Two
results are published to familiarise young people with the ways of a spiritual
life.

"We do not compel anyone to join. This is a lifelong vocation and the choice
should be theirs. The problem is that not many parents want their daughters to
spend their lives as nuns," says Sr Leena, secretary of the Conference of
Religious India’s (CRI) Kerala region.

The number of congregations in the state has gone up to 154 in recent years.

Almost half of them are of European origin, and it was the fall in number of
European novices that prompted these orders to establish their houses here.

I thought that Jesus came to this earth to bring peace and that he represents

How would you explain Mathew10, verse 34-36?
"Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to

It is so nice; Joseph revealed some of his experiences with his fellow so called
believers.

There are many Joseph Y Lees in our society of today Youths and Adults alike. So
identifying problems like this is a good eye opening to many Christian
believers, few of us calls them as hypocrites. Being that way, may not be their
fault, but plain ignorance. Let us all pray for a general awakening within our
church.

Any time I have an intimate talk with an adult or youth, I always see their
thirst for recognition in the society and even in the church. In order to see
through these personalities to know who they are we need to be spirit filled. We
need to have an outreach ministry within the ministry itself, I mean within the
church. If we can start that, we can bring them all closer to Jesus. Another
thing, if we had a bitter experience with a group/ individual or some
group/individual treated us bad, we definitely take revenge upon them by
treating others good, I mean good. We learned a lesson and we taught a lesson,
which is very much pleasing to our FATHER IN HEAVEN

Thank you and cheers!
With prayers and lots of love,
Jose

"To every careful thinker there is a gain, saith the proverb; and Christ implied
more than this, when He said, 'He that seeketh findeth.' Wherefore it does not
occur to me any more to wonder how Philip followed Christ. Andrew was persuaded
when he had heard from John, and Peter the same from Andrew, but Philip not
having learned anything from any but Christ Who said to him only this, 'Follow
Me,' straightway obeyed, and went not back, but even became a preacher to
others. For he ran to Nathanael and said to him, 'We have found Him of whom
Moses in the Law and the Prophets did write.' Seest thou what a thoughtful mind
he had, now assiduously he meditated on the writings of Moses, and expected the
Advent? for the expression, 'we have found' belongs always to those who are in
some way seeking."

St. John Chrysostom.

bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" So He said, "I will certainly be
with you." Exodus 3:11,12

read the whole chapter(at least the verses just above and below ) before
sending a query about one or two verses.
